An amazing appearing act Mystery, Magic and Mayhem: Wonders from the American Museum of Magic

Show props and posters from the American Museum of Magic

From the American Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan, this exhibit features the stories and treasures of the performers that entertained residents of the smallest communities and audiences in the grandest theaters. The American Museum of Magic is home to the largest collection of magic open to the public and houses a vast collection of books, photographs and archival materials related to magic and magicians. The exhibit includes artifacts from centuries of magic and magicians throughout the world and will be in our Hurst Gallery January 31 through April 25.

Special thanks to Winter Festival sponsors

From the Director

Welcome to the Winter edition of the Ella News. The staff and board are looking forward to a great holiday season and the celebrations to come in our 50th year of operation. One of the positive changes that we will be instituting in January is the change in admission charge for the galleries—we will be instituting a suggested donation rate for visitors that are not members of the museum. Members will always have free admission as a benefit, but instituting a suggested donation for admission means that all members of our community will have access to the museum regardless of their socio-economic status. This is a great advancement for our museum and the Jackson community. Please spread the word! We have also had some exciting additions to our collections and exhibits areas. Two Jackson-connected artists have placed their ArtPrize works with us. Dominic Pangborn has donated his original artwork, Michigan in Motion, to the museum. We will be installing it in the lobby for all to see as they enter. This is a

permanent donation to the collection and we are very proud to be the recipient of Dominic’s generosity to the museum. The second piece is a collaborative piece coordinated by artist Douglas Jones involving numerous K-12 students in Jackson County and based on a section of Diego Rivera’s mural at the Detroit Institute of Arts. We have installed We Build Together in the hallway leading to the education wing, and it will be located there until the beginning of February—please stop by and see both pieces!

You will soon receive your end of year greeting from the museum. We appreciate all members’ generosity in supporting the museum as we provide opportunities for everyone to explore, engage in and enjoy history and the arts. Have a safe and happy season!

In the Community Karen Dunigan Community Heart Project

This October, the Ella began conducting bi-monthly art sessions at the Jackson InterFaith Shelter. Named the Karen Dunigan Community Heart Project, the sessions aim to provide a creative outlet and an assortment of new art supplies for youth and families at the shelter. With the help of generous sponsors and local teaching artists, the Ella will continue to provide quality art programming and materials for residents throughout the year. Special thanks to the Phil & Pat Willis Foundation, and the Jackson Area Association of Realtors. Contributions are still being accepted.

150 Years: The Jackson District Library January 17–April 18 The present Jackson District Library was established in 1977 with the consolidation of the Jackson Public Library and the Jackson County Library. The Jackson Public Library’s roots stretch back to the establishment of a Reading Room and Library by the Young Men’s Association in 1865. Members had to pay $2.00 a year to be able to utilize the library. In 1885, it became the Jackson Public Library when the city took over its operation. It moved to several different locations before a $70,000 gift from the Andrew Carnegie Library Foundation made it possible to construct the present building which opened its doors in 1906. The County Library System began in 1929. Its first librarian, Maude Grill, transported books to the small local libraries which had been established throughout the county, and to country schools, stores, and even homes in areas where libraries did not exist. Oral histories and research about the library are being conducted by students from Jackson College under the direction of Diana Agy and Lynne Loftis. The project is jointly funded by Jackson College, the Jackson District Library and the Ella Sharp Museum.

Statuary Clocks Never Enough Time Gallery Many of the clocks in this exhibit were made by the Ansonia Clock Company. Ansonia created numerous figural clocks and they are highly sought after by clock collectors today. Although they did produce some statuary clocks before 1880, Ansonia Clock Company’s focus on producing figural clocks increased after this time. Ansonia hired artists to produce a wide variety of bronze statues to adorn clocks or to be used as side pieces. Allen Spiess Jr. has an extensive collection of clocks. All are beautiful and unique, but the statuary clocks in this exhibit are among the most striking. Take some time to really look at the stunning detail and artistry of these clocks. They are amazing.

Another Man’s Treasure Souvenirs and Memorabilia We all have them. They are displayed prominently on bookshelves and end tables, line the pages of scrapbooks, or hide tucked away in drawers. Many eventually find their way to rummage sales and resale shops, but regardless of their fate, we are all compelled to collect them. Too countless to list, we all have our own little stash of souvenir plates, thimbles, wooden outhouses, graduation programs, ball caps and other items too numerous to list. The Ella Sharp Museum has its own collection of souvenirs donated by our generous community over the years. Many of these items will be on exhibit in the Emmet Gallery January 17 through April 11, 2015. What souvenirs have you collected to preserve your memories? We would like to invite you to share your unique mementos by loaning them to us for this exhibit. If you are interested in contributing a souvenir, call Judy Horn at 517.787.2320, or email her at judyh@ellasharp.org.
