A new museum for Jackson Introducing Cell Block 7 The Ella Sharp Museum has partnered with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and will open a prison museum in Cell Block 7 of the State Prison of Southern Michigan in the summer of 2014.
The museum will be dedicated to the history and activities of the MDOC at a unique site located within an active working prison system. Cell Block 7 is a representation of life as an incarcerated inmate at what was once the largest walled prison in the world.

From the Director We welcomed spring to the museum with a glorious Sugaring & Shearing event. We had a packed house and grounds full of families engaging in a full array of activities from Family Engineering Day in the Community Room to sheep shearing and Puddingstone Farms petting animals on Farm Lane to a record number of visitors in the Hillside Farmhouse for tours. Thank you to all who volunteered and visited to make this day special! If you have not already heard, we are well into plans for opening a museum site at the Cell Block 7 of the State Prison of Southern Michigan. The Cell Block 7 museum will be the only museum of its kind in the nation at an operating prison facility. Researched, planned and executed by Ella Sharp Museum staff, the space will show visitors not only the history of the Department of Corrections in Jackson, but also

what is expected during the daily life of an inmate. Visitors will experience a semi-guided tour of the intake and cell block areas. Opening is set for late June—please watch the web site for exact details and spend some time on the inside with us! In July, we will be hosting a spectacular exhibit by Jackson native Dominic Pangborn. His modern style and expressive paintings, objects and textiles are sure to please art lovers of all types. Early summer is also the time we change over the Never Enough Time and Andrews Wildlife Galleries. There are many new things to enjoy in the buildings and galleries, so be sure to visit soon. We have a great slate of summer camps and classes available for the summer season—see the education pages for more information and join us for a great learning experience! I hope to see you all soon!
Travel Committee Informational Meeting The Travel Committee has been meeting and planning some exciting trips, including the possibility of Seattle and a European river cruise. There will be an informational meeting to gauge interest about upcoming trips at the Patio Party on June 12. We will meet at 6 p.m.—please join us!
inside prison from many different perspectives. “The State Prison of Southern Michigan is a rich and important part of the city of Jackson’s history. It is the vision of the Michigan Department of Corrections to have the 7 Block historical site preserved and utilized in a manner that best serves the Jackson community,” Michigan Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns said. “The Ella Sharp Museum has a tremendous reputation and a long and impressive history of serving the Jackson community,” Heyns said. “We thought partnering with them on an expanded museum and tour proposal would enhance the benefit of the 7 Block site to more citizens of Jackson and be the best possible use for the facility going forward. We are thrilled to be a part of this unique partnership.” The Ella Sharp Museum has issued a call for artifacts for potential inclusion in exhibits. The museum invites former inmates, employees, and all those connected with the facility to consider donating or loaning their materials. Items such as letters, journals, artwork, photographs, artifacts, and oral histories relating to the southern Michigan facility, specifically Cell Block 7, are welcome. Those who wish to contribute are asked to provide a brief description of the items to Judy Horn, Director of Collections & Exhibits, at judyh@ellasharp.org or, for more information, contact the Ella Sharp Museum at 517.787. 2320.

A letter to the community from Anthony Gardner When I moved to Jackson almost a decade ago, many people told me that the Ella Sharp Museum was one of Jackson’s pillar organizations—a place essential to the vitality and identity of this community. As I transition from my two-year tenure as president of the Ella Sharp Board of Directors, I see clearly why so many people shared this insight with me. Ella is a unique community treasure, with an exciting and bright future. At a time when many non-profit arts organizations struggle for survival, Ella’s endowment is more than it has been in a decade. The number of Museum members is at its highest in history; Ella is a few months away from opening a second museum in Cell Block 7 at the local prison; and planned future exhibits promise to excite long-term Ella fans while welcoming new and diverse audiences. The upcoming Dominic Pangborn exhibit is just one example. Ella has reached this vibrant place because of passionate leadership, talented staff, committed Friends, and a supportive community. However, Ella has just begun to tap available possibilities. She will continue to need your support if she is to continue to thrive. Communities that support the arts reap rich benefits, ranging from pure cultural enjoyment for its residents to superior economic development. With your ongoing support of Ella Sharp, Jackson can experience these benefits also. Thank you for your support during the last two years. I will transition the board president position to Karen Beers, who has been a board member for four years. She is a tireless advocate for the Museum and for Jackson. Festival goers will enjoy live music and artist booths nestled on the grounds of the Ella Sharp Museum and within the courtyard of the museum’s historic Farm Lane. Gloria Garfinkel Vibrancy of Form New York City contemporary artist Gloria Garfinkel creates paintings, prints, and sculptures with saturated colors and vibrant patterning. Her work combines complex formal structure and painterly invention, informed by dynamic geometry and Japanese art and design.
Beginning with the first of three visits to Japan in 1980, Garfinkel’s work has been influenced by the culture’s iconography, especially the kimono, with its synergy of elegance and drama. The remarkable costumes of kabuki theater served as a model for the use of multiple, bold patterns.
The paintings, prints, and sculptures in this exhibit all share involvement with strong color and vibrant patterns in abstract compositions.

Evolution: Art and Design through Revolution
John Hauger became interested in collecting “sound writer” devices after joining the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society (MAPS) in the late 1970s. Since then, he has accumulated over 1,500 records and approximately 175 phonographs.
Dominic Pangborn is best defined as an evolutionist. Pangborn’s works grow and change in style, medium, and subject matter based on particular periods of his life. The constant element intrinsic to his work is his heritage—a fine balance of eastern and western culture, philosophy, and outlook.
Hauger’s collection spans over 100 years of recorded sound devices including those from the late 19th century to milestones such as the Walkman and iPod.

Pangborn was born in a small Korean village and was brought to the United States at age ten, when he was adopted into the Pangborn family of Jackson. He began his artwork soon after coming to this country, and received his formal education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before starting his career in Chicago and moving to Detroit.
This exhibit will be on view in the Pyron gallery from June 28 to October 11.
Evolution: Art & Design through Evolution will be on view in the Hurst gallery from July 12 to October 11.

New to the Collection Receipt for purchase of DeLand’s History of Jackson County Gift of Tim Bair DeLand’s History of Jackson County, Michigan, written by Colonel Charles V. DeLand, contains full page portraits and biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens of the county as well as photographs and biographies of all the governors of the State and the presidents of the United States. The cost of the book in 1902 was $15.00. In today’s value the cost of the book would be $397.00. Also pictured is an ice bag produced during World War II, with its original care instructions.

World Slavery: The Haitian Revolution and the Rise of American Music | August 16 In this lecture/concert, Ray Kamalay puts African American and American music in the perspective of world history, tracing the development of slavery from ancient Rome to its links with American society, which led to an explosion of music in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

We truly appreciate all of the work they accomplished, and the support they provided to the museum. Their positive attitude, talent, dedication, and efficient work was invaluable. This year our camps are week-long adventures that are designed to meet the needs and interests of specific grade levels. With a new theme each week, there are plenty of creative art projects and fun activities to discover. Browse our camps below, and find the one that’s right for you!
Summer Camps FAQ Drop Off and Pick Up Drop off is between 8:45 and 9 a.m. daily. Campers must be signed in by a parent each morning and signed out before leaving at the end of each camp day. Pick up is between 3:45 and 4 p.m.
Lunch and Snacks Campers must bring their own lunch. The museum will provide a morning and afternoon snack. Please inform us if your child has any food allergies.
