professional I have been fortunate enough to be involved in projects that have been beneficial to my growth as an architect in my 3-4 years of industry experience. Most of the projects here are those that I worked on at VVZ Architects where I worked as a project architect. I was heavily involved in the design process which I find both engaging and challenging. I have also included projects during my time at C|S Design Consultancy and Sinclair Knight Merz’s Philippine office working as a junior architect.

L I MA P ARK HOTE L E X TENSI ON This project includes additional amenities for the existing Lima Park Hotel in Batangas. Lima, Batangas has an emerging technical outsourcing industry and the hotel responds to the market’s need for additional hospitality services. At the client’s request, we tried to design under 300 sqm (3,229 sq. ft.) budget. The space included a coffee shop, a sports bar, a mini spa and gym, and some alfresco dining areas, all of which are connected to the existing Lima Part Hotel. I was in charge of all the design studies and presentation materials subject to the approval of the principal architect. I also participated in some client meetings and ocular visits. Through this project, I have learned how to design within budget constraints and to use space effectively and economically.

Scope: Architectural Design Type: Hospitality / Commercial Location: Batangas, Philippines Area: 265 sqm / 2,852 sqft Year: 2014-2015 Company: VVZ Architects Job Role: Project Architect

The coffee shop is accessible through the main road, parking area, and the alfresco dining at the center. The sports bar is accessible through the side road.

3

Both the coffee shop and the sports bar share the kitchen/service area for an economical use of space.

4

The spa houses 2 massage rooms, 1 for male and 1 for female and a gym. It is accessible through the open space in the center and is connected to the existing hotel at the back. 5

The outdoor dining is a multi-purpose space and can service both the sports bar and the coffee shop.

o house This project is a renovation of a 1 storey residence. The client requested for a Mediterranean house with Pottery Barn style interiors. With the budget in mind, we tried to design it in such a way that we can utilize as many old walls as possible while making the house bigger. We added an additional level to accommodate more living and entertainment areas. I was in charge of all the design studies and presentation materials subject to the approval of the principal architect. Through this project, I have learned how to design within budget constraints and to use space effectively and economically.

Scope: Architectural & Interior Design Type: Residential / Renovation Location: Manila, Philippines Year: 2015 Area: 202 sqm / 2,174 sqft. Company: VVZ Architects Job Role: Project Architect

c h ou s e This project is a renovation of a 2 storey residence. The objective is to design a contemporary house with an efficient organization of spaces with a tight control on the budget. The hidden lines in the floor plan represent the old walls that are to be demolished. We tried to retain as much of the old walls as possible. I was in charge of all the design studies and presentation materials subject to the approval of the principal architect. Through this project, I have learned how to design within budget constraints and to use space effectively and economically.

Scope: Architectural Design Type: Residential / Renovation Location: Manila, Philippines Year: 2015 Area: 180 sqm / 1,937.5 sqft Company: VVZ Architects Job Role: Project Architect

This project is a mixed use commercial building located on a through lot. We prepared 2 design studies. The commercial area in front is meant for to house a bank and offices on the second floor. At the back is the residential area where the family owners are meant to live. I was in charge of all the design studies and presentation materials subject to the approval of the principal architect. Through this project, I was challenged to think out of the box and to take advantage of the site characteristics in terms of zoning. 14

cama y a c o a s t eg d Camaya Coast is a seaside resort and residential community in Bataan, Philippines. It is made up of villages namely: Bayu Peaks, Menara Point, Kencana Hills, Mont Kiara, Beach Villa, and Pelangi Heights. The project is to provide the design of all the signages and marquees for all the villages. I was in charge of all the design studies, presentation materials, and working drawings subject to the approval of the principal architect. This project has exposed me to the allied services of architecture and made me think about how it differs from the usual services of an architect.

ACADEMIC Here you will see my academic works which includes my undergraduate thesis and a couple of study models. I graduated B.S. Architecture in 2011 at University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Architecture. UST, also known as the Pontifical Royal University and the Catholic University of the Philippines, is the oldest existing university in Asia since its establishment in 1611. The UST College of Architecture is proclaimed a Center of Excellence by the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education. It is also a consistent top performing school in the architecture licensure exams.

C I N E M AL A Y A C E NTE R My thesis proposal is the Cinemalaya Center: The Official Venue of the Philippine Independent Cinema. This project aims to be a venue for the annual Cinemalaya Film Festival and serve as a headquarters of Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. It also seeks to solve the distribution problems of the industry by making these films more accessible through this structure. Design Concept The form is inspired by the Cinemalaya’s logo which is the ‘balanghai’, a huge boat that the early Filipinos used in search of a land where they could live in freedom. It symbolizes the energy, imagination, courage, and unfaltering spirit of the Filipinos translated through film.

Design Process With a focus on ‘dynamic architecture’, I tried to create a space that can be configured to a variety of purposes. While main function of this space is for a venue for the annual film festival, on normal days it is meant to serve as the headquarters of the Cinemalaya Foundation, an educational and research facility focusing on local films, and a museum to showcase local films. Design considerations include accessibility, circulation, zoning, acoustics, lighting, and sustainability.

ROW HOU SE

This project is a national pavilion for the Philippines for the World Expo. The form is inspired by the sails of the colorful vinta. The vinta is a traditional boat found in the island of Mindanao, the southern part of the Philippines. It is used to transport goods and has colorful sails which represent the culture and history of the Muslim community in the area. At night, a play of lights is meant to shine out of the tall glass windows. The landscaping is inspired by the waves of the sea.

This project is a flood proof row house situated along the congested streets of downtown Manila, a place infamous for its flooding during the rainy season. Inspired by Tadao Ando’s Azuma house, I provided a private inside courtyard, free from the traffic noise in front while providing natural light and cross ventilation. The first floor is for parking and other service areas which doubles as a catch basin for the floods. I provided a brise soleil to shield the windows from glare and sun light which also acts as a design feature.

FREELANCE On my own time, I do some small scale design projects, rendering and layout works for other freelance architects. I have also done some graphic design projects for various clients, friends, and organizations. Occasionally, I enjoy taking photos and editing them.

c a n vas c a fe This is a project that I worked on in collaboration with another architect. The client wanted a minimalist cafe that is also a co-working area and third space between your home and office. The project is located in the south of Metro Manila and is currently under construction.
