The critical list: more hot tickets Round-up

ɀ DO good and enjoy some class acts at A Concert for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices this Saturday (June 22). The event, in aid of the Milton based charity, is in its seventh year and hoping to hit a fundraising target of £10,000. Back due to popular demand, long-time Eddi Reader collaborator Boo Hewerdine will be headlining, supported by Hannah Sanders and up-and-coming singersongwriter Lewis Mokler (so good he’s supported rising folkster Lucy Rose). Get involved at The Golden Hind, Milton Road, Cambridge from 7.45pm. Tickets cost £12 from (01223) 513932 or www.cambridgefolkclub.org. ɀ ORDER yourself a scotch and settle in for a night of bluesy hits from George Thorogood & the Destroyers. With 40 years in the business behind him, Thorogood is promising a catalogue of finger snapping, foot tapping rock ‘n’ roll, with no half measures when it comes to roots and boogie. They’ll be supported by Big Boy Bloater (nope, we’ve no idea either), and KATMEN, often described as a ‘smokin’ Rockabilly powerhouse’ – find out if the rumours are true tonight (June 20) at the Cambridge Corn Exchange at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £28.50 from (01223) 357 851. ɀ FERNANDO’S Kitchen sound pretty sexy. It’s probably down to the mix of Flamenco, North African and Latin beats they offer, combined with a name that screams HEAT. The troupe of multicultural, multi-talented musicians, founded by London buskers Sebastian Diez and Heidi Joubert, perform their very own pieces as a three-six piece line-up, playing everything from Spanish guitar, double-bass, oud (a pear shaped banjo type thing apparently), to flamenco cajon, percussion and trumpets. See them in action at Cambridge Junction on Saturday, June 22 at 7pm. Tickets cost £13 from (01223) 511511. ɀ PACT (Petersfield Area Community Trust) are hosting their annual summer event this weekend. Two weeks of costume carnival workshops have built up to this moment, which will see Norfolk Street, Cambridge become a den of cheerleading, hip hop, hula hooping, skateboarding, crafts, barbecuing, face painting and hands on science, plus packed with loads more activities. Pop along from 12noon on Saturday, June 22 for outdoorsy, community fun; eat lots, dance and get stuck in. Entry is free, find out more at twitter.com/PACTcambridge. ɀ CHILDREN of the 70s (and anyone else who likes a bit of Saturday Night Fever, let’s not discriminate), should probably take a look at The Supersonic 70s Show at Haverhill Arts Centre tomorrow (Friday, June 21). The live show – featuring the glitzy voices of Janey Bombshell and Mark Keen – squeezes in a record amount of hit 70s smashes from Queen, ELO, The Osmond’s and David Cassidy, to belters from Mud, T. Rex, The Carpenters and Grease. Time to dig out your old flairs... It’s all part of the annual Haverhill Arts Festival and kicks off at 8pm. Tickets cost £16.50 from (01440) 714140.

RAMA obsessed teens can get stuck into a day of free theatre workshops at Cambridge Junction this Saturday. The one day festival is set to build on the venue’s brilliance at running interactive arts sessions for youngsters, but this time there’s a bit of a twist: it’s being run by the venue’s troupe of eight apprentices. They’ve picked the theme (circuses and illusion), the name (the Big Top Youth Theatre Festival) and have organised the whole thing while getting on the job training, covering everything from lighting and staging to manning the box office and bar. Aimed at all theatre-inclined 14 to 19-year-olds and school groups, the emphasis is very much on learning something new, coming up with ideas and meeting likeminded people. Apprentice Lewis Jones explains: “The fact we’ve been given a date in exam period, we thought, well we can’t ask people to come prepared with a 10 minute piece with a theme because they’re busy, so we wanted to make it a little bit more of an experience, a learning thing, a creating thing that they could do without any real preparation.”All you have to do is turn up. On the day everyone will split into three groups and cycle through three workshops, individually led by industry experts. These include the Junction’s creative learning manager, Oliver Jones, who has worked with Trestle Theatre and runs his own theatre company, Blindeye; NIE, one of the Junction’s associate artists, who will host a straight acting session and the mezzanine floor will be cleared for Look Left Look Right. “They do a lot of promenade theatre, something hopefully the people coming won’t have had too much knowledge of before and that will be a real interesting thing for them to do,” Lewis enthuses. “They’ll be able to create something in the space so people walk through it, rather than doing a traditional, ‘here you are on a stage’, performance.” The day will also kick off with a “showy” piece from Oliver. “He’s got something up his sleeve which he’ll hopefully wow us all with,” Lewis grins. “He’s a secretive man.” Then it’s lunch time. Lewis pauses significantly: “There will be free pizza.” (We’ll say that again: FREE PIZZA PEOPLE.) But the fun doesn’t stop there: “After the pizza they will be devising, with the practitioners around just to get advice, give them ideas,” and then there will be a chance to perform to the other two groups. “It’s going to be interesting to see how they adapt to different spaces,” muses Lewis. So why should people go along? “It will be unique; an exciting opportunity to work with different, talented people that will be able to give you knowledge that you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else, and to meet likeminded young people who have an active interest in an exciting sector.” If that doesn’t sway you, don’t forget the free pizza.
