Lisbee Stainton Don’t know much about Hampshire born singer-songwriter Lisbee Stainton? Neither did we, well, until ELLA WALKER had a five minute chat with the corkscrew-curled musician. Here are the results, in Lisbee’s own words. My sound is somewhere between
folk, acoustic and pop in terms of genre, and I play an 8-string guitar, so that has a pretty interesting sound to it live.
My influences are pretty much
the music I grew up listening to, so my parents’ record collection. Singersongwriters of the 70s: James Taylor and Carole King, Joni Mitchell and also bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Police and of course, The Beatles.
I’m listening to a Californian
songwriter at the moment called Jessica Hoop, who is incredible. I’ve seen her live many times.
With my latest album
, Word of Mouth, I wanted to approach it a little more organically than I have before, so focusing on each song individually, but being more adventurous in terms of the production and the musicians I used. I think it very much grew around the people who played on it, which was incredible. It’s the kind of music that I want people to connect to. That’s my goal: connecting with people. I don’t know whether I’m good at it, but we’ll find out, I guess!
Touring with (folk musician) Seth
Lakeman has been really fun and a huge learning experience. He’s a highly

seasoned performer and a brilliant performer, so it’s great to watch him on stage every night on tour and see how he works the crowd. Also, the musicians in his band are wonderful and all virtuosic in their own right, so it’s quite a challenge for me, but I enjoy the pressure.
I would love
to collaborate with Robert Plant; he’d be incredible to collaborate with.
My career highlight is either playing the Royal Albert Hall when I supported Joan Armatrading – that gave me the ambition to one day headline it; or it was playing the O2 arena when I was 17 which made me really want to go back there again.
When I was 7 I had a
very short-lived ambition to be a rapper. And anyone who knows me in any tiny way will know that would never be a good thing for me to do!

Lissie Sun-kissed folk-rock musician Lissie has sold out Cambridge Junction. Here’s what you need to know about the ballsy singersongwriter: n Born Elisabeth Maurus, Lissie grew up on the banks of the Mississippi on Rock Island, Illinois. n She got kicked out of high school, moved to Paris for a bit and then drove to LA to “make it”. n “Making it” involved making ends meet by working in an ice cream parlour, as a sales assistant at Urban Outfitters and selling honey at farmers’ markets, as you do. n The BBC described her voice as “parched, dry-toast,” we think they meant that in the best possible way. n Playing bluesy folk-pop, her second album Back to Forever came out last year, following her critically acclaimed debut, Catching a Tiger. n The Independent said that
Lissie, Cambridge Junction, Friday, March 14, at 7pm. SOLD OUT. “where Catching a Tiger mined the 1970s Fleetwood Mac seam, Back to Forever moves things into the 1980s – all fist-pumping verses and Kids-in-America-like big choruses.” We’re inclined to agree. It’s also probably best listened to on a too-hot day, driving fast with the windows down. n She’s good friends with Ellie Goulding after they toured together in 2010, and appeared on Robbie Williams’ last album. n She’s not big on make-up or shaving her legs, but is a huge fan of tequila – 100 per cent agave, of course. Apparently she’s even got her own brand, which basically makes her awesome.
