01. WASTE BANK DESIGN PROMOTES COMMUNITY INCLUSION Public Space Data Utilization for a more Equal and Inclusive Jakarta #HACKJAK 2017 Designathon Category - 1st Prize https://hackjak.jakarta.go.id/ The municipal government of Jakarta has provided public space in the form of public and social facilities as means for citizens to work, do activities, as well as interact with the surrounding community. The existence of accessible and well-functioning public space is very important for urban life. However, there are still social and public facilities those are not equal and inclusive for all. #HACKJAK2017 is a competition platform to provide solution concerning utilization of public space in Jakarta, inviting programmer, designer, architects and urban planner to harness Jakarta Big Data facility as opportunity to create innovation to improve citizen’s social and economy benefit. The design came out as the 1st winner out of 10 design proposals. MY ROLE This is a group submission. I was part of a small team alongside Meta Tresna and Patricia Amelia. My role is as the general project conceptor, and I am responsible for analyzing the challenge brief, researching Jakarta big data, and connect the compatibility of the project with local social context.
02
THE CHALLENGE
THE STORY
THE APPROACH
The designathon competition came with two main tasks - to utilize Jakarta Open Big Data as basis for public analysis; and to propose spatial planning solution based on that study to improve the identified problem.
Me and Meta regularly volunteer at Inspiration Factory Foundation Pluit, where we come to teach underpriviledged children in a slum area every Sunday. There we met Asti, a 5-grade student living under the highway street of Jakarta. Just like other children, Asti also attend primary school. But when her family do not have money at the time, she would go with her mother busking on the streets for money. The environment where Asti live is also very dirty and lack of sanitation facility, despite its existence in the capital city. Along with our concern about Asti’s life and also waste management issue, we decided to take this case as the root of our project.
We start by understanding the local demography, which is accessible from: - Open Data Jakarta Portal (http://data.jakarta.go.id) - Jakarta Smart City (smartcity.jakarta.go.id/maps/) - and some other resources. While I already know about the Waste Bank program by national government of Indonesia, all of us were not familiar with the facility and design criterias. So we also did reference study about Waste Bank processes and successes in various pilot project across Indonesia.
The scope is quite open, could be based on any urban challenges we already encountered in our daily life.

THE RESEARCH
THE DISCOVERY
From the data resources, we compare the demographic data of the location with the surrounding political districts division. Asti’s home is located in Penjaringan, and we took key data criteria such as population, density, unemployment rate, education level, the number of waste facilities available, and social vulnerability index.
The available data proves that Penjaringan has significantly the highest population, resulting in high settlement density. The rate of unemployment also among the highest among the area. The amount of people receiving education higher than high school is remarkably the lowest. It only has 3 waste facilities, and marked as ‘Vulnerable’ in the social vulnerability index.

THE INSIGHT
THE SOLUTION
we shall not see each of the issue as separated factors. economy, education, environment, they are all interrelated.
We realized that the problem lies not only in standalone department such as waste system or economy or education. It is interrelated to each other, and to provide a sustainable solution, we have to address the challenge in 3 major areas: economy, education, and environment. And a waste bank facility will answer these three challenges at once. Different than the existing waste bank, we want to enliven the facility with a more enticing design and programs
THE DESIGN CRITERIA Based on our research on existing waste bank establishment, the very basic facilities should include at least: waste collection area, administration area, and socialization and campaign area. The waste is collected by the central municipal waste system based on notification from the waste bank manager, indicating that the waste capacity is almost full and needs to be transferred.
waste bank
SITE PLAN The site is located under the highway near the slum area of Penjaringan, North Jakarta. We choose this place because we already know some of the local community and it is easier for us to approach them for the pilot project. Currently, the place is used for illegal parking, dump areas, and informal settlement. We intend to enliven the surrounding community by establishing a waste bank facility in this location.

ORIENTATION
ACCESSIBILITY
MASS AND ZONING
The allocated lot has a pillar on the east side, with highway road at the north side, which is inaccessible. The main access is through the passageway and the west side.
The outer corner is the most accessible area by people. On the north side, trees are added to reduce noise from passing vehicles. We divide the mass into 3 main zone.
The main and largest space is for the waste collection area. The socialization area is located in the most accessible part. The administration area is located in the inner part to provide privacy because the waste weighting and transaction will be conducted here.

PLAYGROUND ZONE Due to the numerous children living in this area, we also provide this open playground for playing and fun workshop activities. This place is intended for waste educational activities such as recycling artwork, environmental educational games, teaching waste sorting, etc.
09
ADMINISTRATION ZONE
SOCIALIZATION ZONE
WASTE COLLECTION ZONE
This space is intended for administrative process such as registration, opening bank account, waste weighting and payment, etc. The waste bank is open only on predetermined schedule, so we make this space quite multifunction and open for other community needs.
This is to facilitate campaign and waste education to the community. We intend to hold regular education program to the local community, for the kids as well as the housewives about the importance of cleanliness and how to handle household waste properly.
Divided into 4 main waste categories: glass, metal, plastic and paper, this is the place to accommodate the collected waste. Waste is collected until specified capacity, until it is time to coordinate with the municipal waste collection system to pick them up.
MATERIALS In the waste collection zone, we build wall from lattice bricks, painted in bright and fun colours to attract people of the waste bank facilities. Solid walls are needed because in this facility we will store the collected waste from surrounding people until it is carried away by the central waste truck. We use lattice wall to provide air circulation as well as give a sense of openness about what is inside of each waste separation rooms.

04. SENIOR FRIENDLY ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM Designing Independent-usage Bathroom for Senior User Crowdsourcing Competition - 1st Winner ( January 2015) This is a remodelling project to transform a regular bathroom into a bathroom that is senior-friendly, which facilitates independent usage for older people. The design came out as the 1st winner out of 23 design submissions. MY ROLE This is an individual project for an online crowdsourcing competition. I am responsible for all phase of works from theoretical research to producing the design output.
36
THE CHALLENGE This is an existing bathroom, and the owner wants to remodel it to become senior-friendly. Bathroom is a very private space where individuals do highly personal activities, like having shower, urinate, defecate, brushing teeth, and else. Aging could means more challenge in using the bathroom space, with more risk in fell or other accidents. The main objective of this project is to design a bathroom space that can facilitates independent usage for elder people so the senior user can comfortably do activities without needing assistance.
THE PREREQUISITES The design is intended to facilitate older people in general and taking out any specific cases or disabilities which might need special spatial solutions.
THE APPROACH I start by researching the challenges faced by senior people and the common risks occured in bathroom. The research was done online mainly from published design guidelines and space standard reports from various institutions.
THE DISCOVERY From the research I categorized the physical challenges faced by older people into 4 main cause: vision, hearing, physical changes, and cognitive function deterioration.
37
Potential Physiological Alterations affecting Older People Vision • • • • • • • •
Glaucoma, cataracts, mascular degeneration Sensitivity to glare Reduced speed of accommodation to changing light levels Reduced vision in low light ‘Yellowing’ of the aging lens Reduced visual activity Reduced fields of vision
Hearing • • • • •
Reduced hearing ability Malfunctioning hearing aids Sensitivity to high frequency noises Ability to identify sound direction or source is reduced Difficulty filtering out background noise
Physical Changes • • • • • • •
Loss of muscles strength Reduced balance and flexibility Poor grip and increased fatigue Reduced reflex / reaction time Reduced dexterity & fine motor coordination Increased response to environmental vibration Decreased thermal response
Cognitive Function • • • • • • •
Increased prevalence of dementia with age Reduced memory Slowed information processing Visual perception changes Reduced reasoning & abstract thinking Reduced the ability to focus on pertinent details Communication changes, increased susceptibility to delirium
THE INSIGHT
Designing for independent usage for senior people is very important as it improves their psychological confidence and control over their own activity. THE DESIGN CRITERIA The bathroom should accomodate users using wheelchair or crutches.
DESIGN PROCESS

spatial framing
extra linear floor drain to prevent flood
linear water floor drain
38
Materials and color
matte tile the wall and floor use small tiles in matte finish to reduce over-reflection and so the surfaces are not slippery to prevent injuries.
simple pattern the pattern is kept simple to avoid visual over-stimulation.
warm-tone color the materials are in warm and solid color which are easier to see
contrasting colors the use of contrast colors to differentiate floor, wall, and ceiling for easier spatial recognition.
39
Lighting Strategies the existing window is replaced with a linear window at the top of the shower area to provide more privacy, reduce window maintenance in the wet area, but still maintain the natural lighting.
frosted glass window reduces glare while still maintain the natural lighting
matte wall tiles the wall uses light color so the light is distributed evenly and well-diffused inside the room
lighting combination uses several lights for an even, soft, and well diffused lighting. More lighting combination reduces glare and avoid pooled lighting.
40
wall trims Trims are given at the bottom, 800mm height, and ceiling part of the wall to highlight the room dimension for easier spatial recognition. The floor pattern also follow the shape of the bathroom which divided into 2 areas: the dry area and the shower area. The room is kept simple and easy to navigate to promote independent usage.
cornice tile cornice to differentiate wall from ceiling.
wall trim wall trim at 800mm height, also to contrast the location of grab bars.
plinth tile cornice to differentiate floor to wall.
41
Sanitary and fixtures folding grab bar
raised toilet seat
head and hand shower vertical grab bar shower grab bar an L-shaped grab bar is installed at 800mm height to promote independent bathing by older adults.
raised toilet seats a toilet mounting height between 430mm (1ft 5in) and 450mm (1ft 4in) is preferable to the normal height of 380mm (1ft 3in) because older adults can have difficulty lowering themselves into a sitting position.
foldable bench a bench is provided to support transition activities before and after shower. The bench can be folded when not in use to provide a barrier free access for wheelchair.
folding grab bar the side wall is replaced with a folding grab bar to support movement when using the toilet as well as lavatory. When a wheelchair is used, the grab bar can be raised to provide a barrier-free access
asymmetric lavatory
grab rails vertical grab bar
compact lavatory with less depth to provide ease of utilization, so the wheelchair user could use the faucet without having to reaching out too far
