It seems that a new mutated strain of super malaria is spreading like wild fire. This disturbing development is occurring mostly in Southeast Asia. This strain of newlymutated malaria has proven to be drugresistant and has spread into the region of Vietnam. Efforts to contain this mosquito born virus have been complicated to say the least. Experts feel it could potentially become a threat globally.

Superbug is Becoming Very Drug Resistant Just as a bacterium does, malaria is learning to adapt and fight off our best medicine. Drug resistance has become a nagging and growing issue for the treat of malaria. There are big fears that this disease might one day become untreatable with the world’s current batch of pharmaceutical drugs. This extremely bothersome malaria strain, referred to as PfPailin, is currently running all across Southeast Asia. They cannot treat this “superbug” with a typical first-line malarial drug. It seems that this strain showed up a couple of years ago in the region of Cambodia, and it has promptly spread into the neighboring countries of Laos and Thailand. Today, experts have pointed out in communications to The Lancet, this drug-resistant malaria strain has gone and spread from the lands of Cambodia straight into a Vietnam sub-region called Mekong. It is here where they are seeing patients that are infected who are seeing “alarming rates of drug failure.” In the southeast regions of Asia, drug treatment failures – where failure refers to drug which are not curbing malaria symptoms like fever, jaundice, problems with organs, seizures, comas, anemia, and even death – are as high as 60 percent. The global authority World Health Organization is claiming that there are approximately 1.5 million people who have been infected by malaria in the region of southeastern Asia every year that results in more than 600 deaths. 1/2

This is a very heavy setback to this region, and is certainly a big hindrance in their efforts to main any control of the disease. The typical first treatment for malaria includes a combination of two strong anti-malarial drugs, piperaquine and artemisinin. This new strain is already resistance to artemisinin, and to make things worse, this disease has actually mutated once again and can now resist the other drug, piperaquine. This is why authorities are becoming afraid that the strain may become untreatable with the medicines that are currently on hand. “The spread of artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum [the parasite that causes malaria] and the subsequent loss of partner antimalarial drugs in the Greater Mekong subregion presents one of the greatest threats to the control and elimination of malaria,” researchers told in the communications to The Lancet. “The evolution and subsequent transnational spread of this single fit multidrug-resistant malaria parasite lineage is of international concern.”

Afraid It Might Spread to Africa – The King of Malaria There is a growing fear that this strain of drug resisting super malaria will find its way into the continent of Africa. There is good reason for these fears because Africa is the continent where malaria first emerged, and where the Anopheles mosquito, which is the insect that is legendary for quickly spreading the disease, is very plentiful. Not to mention that 92 percent of all the world’s malaria cases happen to be in Africa. It is estimated that around 212 million folks are infected worldwide every year. And they say that over 400,000 of them died from malaria in 2015 alone. Sadly, most of the deaths occur in children who are less than 15 years of age. So when we see that a mutate strain of super malaria is spreading like wild fire, it is great concern.
