Getting Creative Physical Fitness During a Pandemic Photos And Story by Elle Olthoff

Cover photo: Shay Bethany sits down on her sunroom floor as she begins her stretching and warmup for the at-home workout she is about to begin. Top photo: Before starting the workout, Shay gets ready by putting on tennis shoes to provide her with a better grip with some of the exercises.

8

Bottom photo: Shay also has to tie back her hair. “My hair is so long and curly that if I don’t tie it back, it gets in the way,” she stated.

Top photo: She starts her workouts always by stretching both her arms and legs. She doesn’t want to pull anything and has to be extra careful now because of the cold weather. Bottom photo: After stretching, Shay goes into a quick ab workout that consisted of planks (as shown), crunches, situps, burpees, and russian twists just to name a few until she gets a good sweat coming on.

Next, Shay brings out a resistance band. She utilizes this with her legs and butt workout. It makes squats, lunges, side shuffles (pictured) and kicks just a little harder, for her to get extra gains.

After all that activity, she checks her smart watch to get a general sense of her activity levels. This was something she checked periodically to make sure that she is burning calories.

To tone her arms, Shay makes use of a coffe table. This table is the perfect height for her to do tricep-dips (pictured), weighted hip thrusts, and pushups like one could normally do with a bench.

She also takes a quick break to crack open her water and stay hydrated since she still has a few things to do before her workout is over.

11

Shay also gets creative with her arm workout by using a heavy brick that was in her garage. She uses it to tone her arms.

To continue her workout, Shay takes advantange of the stairs in her house. She uses these to build up her calf muscles with running stairs, and calf raises and dips.

12

Finally, getting towards the end of her workout, Shay goes for a about a mile long run through her town to get in some cardio and work on her endurance.

Shay ends her workout by turning YouTube on her TV and following a cool down video by one of her favorite workout channels MADFIT. She does the same exercises as the lady on the screen and is finally done with her at-home pandemic workout.

WARRIOR AT HEART Lane Reiman follows his dreams of coaching while helping young girls build confidence and reach their full potential. Photos and story by Elle Olthoff

or as long as Lane Reiman can remember it has been his dream to pursue basketball in

This wasn’t an easy thing for Lane to do either. Each

coming true.

Lane Reiman, a young, 24 year old from the small town

of Ayrshire, Iowa has always been in love with basketball. He played it in high school, he played pickup games with friends throughout college and beyond, he follows the professional game play, specifically, his favorite team the Celtics, and the last thing he has been wanting to cross off that list was to be a coach.

The opportunity to cross coaching off his list came to

Lane through his younger sister Josi. At the time Josi, a seventh grader, also fell in love with the sport of basketball. Recruited by a referee at one of her games, she was invited to join the AAU team the Warriors that year.

Lane, being as passionate as he was, joined Josi at her

practice and games eventually becoming the assistant coach to Willie Holmes, the head coach, whose daughter, Zoey, was also on the team. The team that year was put together by Willie Holmes and consisted of girls from Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Ayrshire, and Lake Park. And, since being his girlfriend and a digital media major, I was also soon enlisted to join the team as the videographer, recording practice scrimmages and actual games for Lane and the other coaches to watch back as film.

As assistant coach, Lane spent most of his time

helping Willie out with his plays and drills, providing assistance to the girls during practices and games, and ensuring that Willie’s plans were carried out. He attended all the practices and tourna-

“The girls need an opportunity to play and there’s so many people looking to make money off of girls who just want to play at a high level. It takes one person to make the sacrifice so 12 families don’t have to.”- lane

Reiman

In those first seasons, the girls played various people around the midwest. They spent lots of playing time in South Dakota and Nebraska during earlier COVID times because they were the only ones having tournaments. They won a game every once in a while but they weren’t having much overall success as a team. After 2 years of running the show, Willie wanted a break. So he told Lane that the head position was his if he wanted it. Lane jumped at the opportunity. He was excited to finally be given the chance to lead and do things his way. He truly believed he could take these girls to new places in their basketball career, and really wanted to be sure that any girl who wanted to take basketball further after high school could get that opportunity. After becoming head coach, Lane had to find his own assistant coaches now and reached out to an old college friend named Josh Conley to help him with this. Another dad on the team Bryan, father to Payton, also joined the team as an assistant coach. Together, these three men began meeting every Saturday for practice with the girls. Lane was still making the long drive, but was now more excited to run the show the way he wanted and introduce new drills and plays that he thought would be beneficial.

30

Lane got started with recruiting new girls.Over the years a few girls had quit or left the team to pursue other opportunities so Lane was determined to search for and find a good group of girls who were willing to be coachable and kind to each other. “We started this thing because the girls in our area did not have an opportunity to play,” Lane said, “When someone comes along that doesn’t appreciate my time and the opportunity that is given to them it makes it very very hard for them to be coachable. I am very selective with who I work with because it’s very important to have a unified team.” He ended up finding a few new girls and the 2021 team consisted of girls from Lake Park, Okoboji, Ayrshire, and Ruthven. So, the team started up practices for the year in February and after about a month of practicing the team had their first tournament in Brookings, South Dakota on March 26th and 27th. They were competing in the 9th grade girls AAU category against 4 other AAU teams consisting of Spirit Lake, Chamberlin, Red Hawks, and Blue Devils. The first game on the 26th was against the Blue Devils. It was an intense game, and the first real game that all of these girls would be playing together. Lane was nervous but excited to play. He didn’t want to let the girls down. He stated, “I was nervous because I want to do a good job for the girls. We don’t get a lot of time to practice as a team so it’s really about making every moment in practice count and getting through as much stuff as possible. I try to make the game simple but there is still a learning curve, so I was nervous about how we would do, but once the game started we worked out our nerves.”

much stuff as possible.” - Lane Reiman

The girls fought hard, and after being down in the first half, they battled back to win the game by 2 points, with the final score coming to 38 to 36. The next day the team had 3 games, but they were all feeling good since coming off a win the day before. The first game was against the Red Hawks and the girls were able to pull off a win rather easily against this team with a score of 48-12. Their next game against the Chamberlin team was another close one. The girls on this team were scrappy and played hard, with the score bouncing back and forth the whole game of who had the lead. In the end, the Warriors were able to pull off another close win. The final score of this game was 40-34. At this point Lane and the girls were feeling very good. They hadn’t ever played this well and done this good at a tournament of this caliber before. “Winning the first 3 games felt great especially because 2 of them were come from behind victories. We overcame our areas of things we need to work on by working really hard and hustling,” Lane said, “We played really good defense and that’s what won us the games.”

The team still had one more team however to play and it was against a Spirit Lake team, and the game was for 1st and 2nd place in the tournament, so the pressure was on.

The game started off well, and the Warriors were able to take the lead, but Spirit Lake kept it close. In the second half, the Warriors lost a few key players to foul trouble and injury. Spirit Lake then came back and was able to take the lead at the end of the game winning it with a score of 36-30. Both Lane and the girls were devastated, he said, “I felt like we should have won the last game. We were tired after playing 3 games in 5 hours. I also felt we were a little unprepared and had some more things to work on. The last game I felt we had to work on attacking a zone better, I was unprepared, I didn’t realize every team would play a zone. I thought teams would play a more aggressive game and that’s what we prepared for.”

Lane took the loss to heart and knew that if he had made different decisions while coaching the outcome may have been different but nonetheless he was proud of his girls and how far they had come since the season before. He knew the wins from this tournament would boost the girls confidence in ways they needed. Since then, thegirls have had a few practices and even brought a few new girls into the practices to become potential new teammates. They have been hustling and working hard to prepare for the next tournament they have coming up. Lane has been working on new drills, and learning to explain things to the girls in a way that they can understand. They all have the belief that going into the next tournament they will accomplish great things. Through Lane and his love of the game and passion to teach, these girls have discovered that all it takes after a hardship or loss is to continue to be a warrior and give it your all with every chance you get.

“The goal this year is to take a bunch of hardworking small town 1A school girls and win the national tournament.” “I want to show that you don’t have to pay 1500-2000 dollars to play basketball at a high level. I want to set a new standard for the AAU circuit.” - Lane Reiman 37
