consistency. Consistency is important in design because it helps people build a familiarity with your brand and start to recognise it. Keep consistent layouts, fonts, colours and logo positions across all your designs.

repetition. Repetition can make a design look complete and helps the viewer move their eye along the page.

balance. Balancing objects and text components involves using space and sizing equally. Designs don’t have to be centred or symmetrical to look balanced. If you have a design component at the top of your page it’s best practice to balance this with something at the bottom of the page.

alignment. Good designers are also good aligners! To achieve good alignment, leave equal spacing between text and object elements, use centre and left/right guides and position photos so that the subject of the photo is not cut off or out of focus.

dominance. Dominance of one design component over another can make your design look dynamic.

hierarchy. The way you structure your design elements will have an impact on the order of information viewers take in. Move important elements up the hierarchy using size, position, colour and bold fonts.

filters. Photo filters can be used to subtly alter the look of images and create a mood. When using multiple images in a design or campaign, it’s good practice to apply consistent filter settings so the images appear as if they’re part of a set.
fonts. Fonts are best paired in contrast. Start experimenting by pairing different fonts in your designs: thick vs. thin, serif vs. sans serif, regular vs. italics, tall and skinny vs. short and stumpy, Title Case vs. ALL CAPS, etc. and you’ll have professional looking designs in no time!
