Welcome to Ellicottville and welcome to spring! As we get ready to say goodbye to winter, it’s the perfect time to head to EVL, kick back and let the fun begin! This weekend, of course, is Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival, where an action-packed weekend awaits at Holiday Valley and in the Village of Ellicottville. Friday night is the Mardi Gras kickoff with the Junior Bacchus Ball at the Ellicottville Brewing Company (EBC) from 7-9 p.m. While the dress code is ski casual (after all, this is Ellicottville), some folks will be vying for formal coronation as king and queen of Mardi Gras. With music, great food and a cash bar, you’ll love being a part of this rollicking event. Tickets available at ellicottvilleny.com or at the door. On Saturday, grab the kids and all your friends, don some masks or full-on costumes and find your place along the village streets for an old-school parade complete with classic floats, marching groups and talented musicians. The parade starts at 6:30. Ski patrollers will be passing out beads in return for donations to the Ellicottville Food Pantry, so be sure to bring along some non-perishables. Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival is a guaranteed great time all weekend long. The resort offers its very own wacky parade on Sunday at noon, as well as some pretty impressive snow sculptures created by the talented HV employees, cookouts, costume contests and lots more. See the full schedule of events on the next page.

Come on back to Holiday Valley March 19 for the annual Pond Skimming. Sign up to skim across an ice-water filled pond, or just watch and cheer on your favorite competitors. Registration will be outside Yodeler Lodge starting at 11 a.m. for $5. Kids under 18 must have a parent’s signature, minimum age is 8 years old. Pond Skimming starts about 1 p.m. and prizes are awarded for Best Skimmer, Best Costume, Best Kid and Best Splash. All participants get a one-day pool pass for the Holiday Valley pool complex for use this summer. Music, a mini-snowbar with margaritas and beer specials, barbeque and more add to the fun! On Sunday, March 20, celebrate the first day of spring by -- of course -- ski racing! Take part in Holiday Valley’s Northwind Super-G. Register at the Training Center for $5 per racer. Training runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Rangers race at 11 a.m., everyone else races at 12:30 p.m. Every spring, the members of the New York State Maple Producers Association invite families and friends into their “sugarhouses” on two different weekends (this year Maple Weekends March 19-20 and April 2-3) to experience the world of pure NY maple syrup. Located at approximately 160 farms and museums across the state, Maple Weekends offers a delicious, fun-filled outing that has a little something for all maple-lovers to taste and experience.
