What’s your plan for holiday shopping this year? If you’re like a lot of people, you’re dreading that trip to the mall or big-box store. Aren’t you glad you have another, far more creative and stress-free option? The Routes to Art (RTA) Holiday Sale takes place this Sunday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the top floor of the main lodge at Holiday Valley. This is a unique opportunity to wow all of your loved ones by purchasing some truly one-ofa-kind gifts while supporting the work of 25 of the area’s most prominent artists. How about a handmade necklace? A frameable or framed art print? Christmas cards? Art books? Functional or fun ceramics? A beautiful basket? Ornaments for the hostess? The choices are nearly limitless and likely to give you “most creative gift-giver” bragging rights. Annual Food Pantry Collection in Front of Gin Mill Nov. 20

Bob McCarthy certainly does his share to help make the season brighter for many. On Wednesday, Nov. 20, he’ll once again be parked with his tractor outside of the Gin Mill, collecting food for the Ellicottville Food Pantry, starting around 9 a.m. This will mark the sixth year that McCarthy’s John Deere tractor and trailer will be parked outside the Gin Mill to collect donations of food for the local pantry. McCarthy will entertain passersby with Irish music and stories, all while accepting monetary and food donations Irish Christmas Set for Dec. 5 happily for the food pantry. Opening of Housing Complex Celebrated in Salamanca

Teamwork and Persistence Result in Success

Citing the ability of different entities to work together and crediting all parties involved for

being persistent in seeing the project through completion, local officials recently gathered to celebrate the opening of a new adult care housing facility for people who are either physically or mentally disabled, are living in poverty or are facing some other obstacle to living independently. The Kinley-Hill housing project on Church Street in the City of Salamanca was the site of a ribbon cutting ceremony late last month, with the $2.5 million project being lauded by all in attendance. The facility created features 18 permanent housing units and five temporary housing units. See Housing Complex page 6

“Katy’s” Coming to Great Valley By Mary Fox

At its meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Great Valley Planning Board held a public hearing on Robert E. Smith’s permit application to establish a dog breeding kennel at 4224 Killbuck Road in Great Valley. Smith, an AKC breeder of Alaskan Malamutes, also owns Beauflue’s kennel at his residence in Cheektowaga. With no objections from the public, the board approved See GV Planning Board page 9

The Village Planning Board took action on a number of projects at its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Sign permits were approved

for Balloons Restaurant and Tips Up Restaurant after those signs were redesigned per previous planning board requests. The board also reviewed

The Village of Ellicottville’s board met Monday, Nov. 10, and was peppered with questions from resident Jack

Rogan on the status of water line repairs promised by the board in July. At that July meeting, the board committed $40,000 to replace 2” mains with 8” mains in several areas of the Village and to make other repairs in order to solve Rogan’s and

other residents’ problems with dirty, undrinkable water coming into their homes through the village’s aging, inadequate pipes. According to Rogan, who also serves as village court justice, the problem is still See Village Board page 7
