Enjoy the warm breeze as you head up to Spruce Lake, and enjoy the greenery before it turns to orange and yellow. If you haven’t cooled off at the Holiday Valley Pool Complex this summer, there are only limited days left! Enjoy a lap pool, toddler pool with two mini waterfalls and the activity pool compete with slide. The neighboring Cabana Bar is just steps away—treat yourself to poolside food and drinks that will make you feel like you’re on vacation, but hurry—the pool complex is only open through Sept. 7. Allegany State Park is fun year-round, but there’s just something about being there during peak season. Pictured at the ceremonial groundbreaking from left are BCH Director of Patient Care Services Darlene Schrantz, Chair of the BCH Board of Directors Gary Eppolito, Mercy Flight Founder and President Douglas Baker, and Mercy Flight Director of Flight Operations Marc Boies.
As part of its ongoing mission to ensure that patients and their families always come first, and as a way to cope with our region’s inclement weather conditions during the winter months, Mercy Flight of Western New York is constructing a new hangar behind Bertrand Chaffee Hospital on East Main Street in the Village of Springville. Mercy Flight officials were joined on Tuesday, Aug. 18 by employees of Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and major stakeholders from various entities in the community at a groundbreaking ceremony for what will eventually be a 2,400-square-foot structure that will be located adjacent to an existing helipad at the hospital. Mansfield Formalizing Road Use Ordinance By Jann Wiswall
Mansfield’s town board has been working with Highway Superintendent Brad Hurley on developing an ordinance to protect the town’s roads from damage by heavy vehicles. The issue came about as a result of some problems with logging and construction companies whose especially
heavy vehicles are causing damage to roads and bridges, which results in expensive repairs for a department with a limited highway budget. Hurley explained to the board at its Monday, Aug. 17 meeting that the intent of the regulations is to formalize policies that are already in See Mansfield Board page 9
CHEF SPOTLIGHT:
Rory Mosher of John Harvard’s Cattaraugus County Undersheriff William (Bill) Nichols, who is being treated for leukemia at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has been at the hospital since his June 10 bone marrow transplant. Taking the lead from Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb, who shaved his head after visiting his colleague in the hospital on August 9, some 50 of Nichols’ colleagues, men and
women alike, shaved their heads to “express their commitment of support.” The photo above and the story of the department’s actions has gotten tremendous local, regional and national attention. Today. com ran the story on Aug. 17 as word spread. The department also collected donations to the hospital in Nichols’ name.
