It’s a Brand New School Year! If you’re a kid, you have just experienced your first day of kindergarten, your first day of middle school or high school or your first day at ECS as a new student. Or, perhaps, you’ve made your first new best friend of the year or joined your first team or school activity. If you’re a parent, you remember these moments; they were usually mixed with excitement and maybe some anxiety. And there’s still a little of both as you watch your children grow and learn and deal with the unexpected and do important things under someone else’s eye. As ECS’s official weekly newspaper, the Ellicottville Times is committed to keeping you up-to-date on school activities, sports, events, advisories, notices and news every week. Turn to page 4 for all things ECS. Here you’ll find some regular features, such as a calendar of activities and a sports roundup by contributor Todd Palmatier, who serves as vice president of the Ellicottville Sports Boosters. You’ll also find a story about what the Boosters do for the school and how you can get involved, as well as a list of school-sponsored health screenings that will be administered this year, provided by school nurse Kimberly Watt. The paper also regularly covers the school’s board of education meetings to keep you informed about administrative actions that impact you and your children. We hope you’ll turn to the Ellicottville Times every week as your source of information about your school. We welcome suggestions about what additional kinds of information you’d like to see. Made in US/Canada Shop Opening in EVL Liz Boberg always had “this dream in my mind of opening a business of my own.” Armed with an associate’s degree in business and a bachelor’s degree in fine art, Boberg is now venturing into the small business world. Opening this weekend, Ameri-Can is Boberg’s dream coming true. The shop, which specializes in U.S. and Canadian-made clothing, antiques and artwork, will officially open its doors Labor Day weekend. Initially, the shop will sell women’s and men’s streetwear, but it will eventually include children’s clothing as well. Boberg, who worked at The Red Door for 27 years, knows the retail clothing business well. Jackets, coats and separates will be sold in the shop, as well as accessories and a “mix of everything.”

Primary Elections THURSDAY, Sept. 10 By Jann Wiswall

Elections on a Thursday? Yes. This year, because the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur falls on the second Tuesday of September, primary election day was rescheduled in Cattaraugus County for Thursday, September 10. Voters who are registered with the Democratic or Republican political parties,

ONLY, may participate in this year’s primary elections. Registered Democrats throughout the county are encouraged to participate in the primary election for County Clerk. Alan Bernstein and Brittany N. Melfi, both of Olean, are running for the seat. Please remember that the county has reduced the number of its legislative districts from

21 to 17. The change goes into effect on January 1, 2016. As a result, those voting in the primary and the general election in November will be voting for candidates in their NEW legislative districts. Registered Republicans in new Legislative District 1, which includes the towns of Dayton, New Albion, Otto, See Primary Elections page 9

It may still be summer, but Ellicottville’s biggest festival of the year is just around the corner and it’s not too soon to make your plans to spend the weekend and enjoy everything the area has to offer. Fall Festival 2015 officially occurs Oct. 10-11, but there’s so much to do in the region, you’ll want to make plans to arrive early and stay late! The festival, sponsored by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, attracts tens of thousands of people every year to enjoy two full days of arts, crafts, carnival rides, live entertainment, boutique shopping, terrific food and an enthusiastic celebration of the season.
