By Eva Potter It’s June and you know what that means. It’s time to start planning to hit up all of the fantastic events and things to do in Ellicottville. Here are a few super fun events you’ll want to add to your summer to-do list. Holiday Valley Cycling Weekend, June 5–7 Biking enthusiasts will once again gather at Holiday Valley for Cycle Ellicottville II. The event is geared to level 2 and 3 riders who regularly ride 30– 60 or more miles. Cyclists will encounter rolling and some steeper hills while enjoying scenic routes around Holiday Valley in Cattaraugus County. The $289 per person cost includes lodging on Friday and Saturday nights, three guided road rides including a sag wagon, cycling clinics, light instruction, meals, social activities and a goody bag. Come and make new friends, explore some new routes and challenge yourself. The commuter rate is $199. Ellicottville OM Team Shines at World Finals Last week from May 20-23, Ellicottville Central School students proudly represented their school at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University. Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is an international educational program for teams of elementary through college students who solve problems using creative thinking, brainstorming, teamwork and problem solving skills. The program is designed to teach the concept that “a group is a more powerful thinking force than an individual.” Indeed, this very powerful group of Division I fourth and fifth grade students (all age 10) led by ECS teacher Leah Klahn, participated with more than 850 teams from See OM World Finals page 8

Local band The Hootz is on the rise! Not only have they been touring the region and beyond, performing their unique style of “not typical country” music in high-energy shows, but recently, they took a trip to the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee to record some tracks. “We had a meeting with our manager, Ben Ewing, and booking agent, Gary Kirves/ Artist Events Nashville (when we were playing in Indiana) last month and they mentioned their interest in recording a couple jingles down there,” See The Hootz page 6

The Great Valley Planning Board tabled its vote on a proposed cell tower at its May 27 meeting. According to Chris Schena, planning board chair, the vote was tabled until June 10 due to a request from Verizon Wireless. Schena explained that Verizon, which would See GV Cell Tower page 6

If you’ve been on the fence about running for local office, now is the time to make your decision. According to New York State election law, “persons wishing to run for elective office must be nominated either by a political party [by petition] or through
the filing of an independent nominating petition. …The current political parties are the Democratic, Republican, Conservative, Working Families, Independence and Green parties. Any person who is not nominated by one of these parties must file an independent nominating petition.”
Candidates registered with political parties may begin circulating petitions on June 2; notarized documents must be submitted to the state from June 6-9. Fun is revving up in the village, when the Armor Inn begins hosting its weekly Bike Days on Sunday, June 7. Bike Days will feature live music indoors at the restaurant’s Ellicottville location (5 East Washington St.), along with beer and food specials and a variety of contests, including
Best Bike (best chrome, best paint, best overall), Best Tattoo (male and female) and a chicken wing eating contest. Each week, winners will receive a goody bag of prizes.
