Pennsylvania

The Keystone State

Pennsylvania’s essential role in the founding of the United States earned it the nickname, the “Keystone State.” The term “keystone” comes from architecture and refers to the central, wedge-shaped stone in an arch, which holds all the other stones in place. During the early days of our nation, Pennsylvania held a key position geographically, economically, and politically.

Today the keystone is a popular symbol of Pennsylvania — it’s even used as an official symbol of Pennsylvania state government. Each Pennsylvania state agency has its own variation of the keystone as its logo.

State Flag

Pennsylvania’s motto is “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence.”

State Motto State Coat of Arms

Pennsylvania’s coat of arms is one of the most familiar of our state emblems.

The coat of arms features a shield that shows symbols of Pennsylvania’s strengths — a ship to show state commerce being carried worldwide, a plow to show Pennsylvania’s rich natural resources, and three sheaves of wheat to show fertile fields and Pennsylvania’s wealth of human thought and action. An olive branch and cornstalk also cross beneath the shield — symbols of peace and prosperity. The state motto appears beneath.

The first state flag of Pennsylvania was authorized by the General Assembly in 1799. Pennsylvania’s flag features the state coat of arms on a field of blue.

Pennsylvania

State Symbols

State Bird: Ruffed Grouse

This brown, chicken-like bird gets its name from the black “ruffs” on the side of its neck. The ruffed grouse was an important part of the food supply for early settlers, and it’s still a familiar sight in Pennsylvania forests today.

State Dog: Great Dane

In frontier Pennsylvania, Great Danes were used as a hunting and working breed. Pennsylvania founder William Penn even had a Great Dane — a portrait of Penn and his Great Dane hangs in the governor’s Reception Room in the Pennsylvania Capitol.

State Animal: White-tailed Deer

Native Americans and settlers alike relied on the white-tailed deer for food and clothing. The white-tailed deer continues to flourish in forests across Pennsylvania.

State Tree: Eastern Hemlock

Eastern hemlocks are a common sight in Pennsylvania forests. A slow-growing, long-lived tree, the eastern hemlock can take 250-300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more.

State Flower: Mountain Laurel

Mountain laurel is an evergreen shrub native to the eastern United States. Its fragrant star-shaped white and pink flowers have attracted travelers since early colonial days. Each spring, Pennsylvania’s mountainsides come alive with the pink blooms of mountain laurel.

State Fish: Brook Trout

Brook trout are the only trout species native to Pennsylvania. With a preference for clear and pure water, brook trout are at home in Pennsylvania’s 4,000 miles of cold water streams.

State Insect: Firefly

Whether you call them fireflies or lightning bugs, these luminous insects brighten Pennsylvania nights all summer long.

State Amphibian: Eastern Hellbender

The Eastern hellbender is the largest salamander in North America. Hellbenders can only survive in clean water, and their population has been on the decline. The official title as state amphibian is meant to bring attention to efforts to preserve their habitats.

State Inventions

As the birthplace of our nation, Pennsylvania is home to countless firsts. In addition to the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, we are the birthplace of the first:

Richgas is a family owned business serving North Central PA and Southwestern NY. We celebrated our 100th Anniversary in 2014. In 2015 we purchased the retail propane business of Bradford Nugas, from owners Jerry & Martha Craver. This was a natural merger of 2 companies with identical operations.

We install above ground and below ground bulk propane tanks & 100 lb. cylinders. All installations & deliveries are made by our professional employees who continually attend schools & seminars to keep up to date on new products, procedures and regulations.

Richgas has a referral program in place—refer a friend, neighbor or family member and receive a $50 credit toward your next fill, if they become our bulk customer. New customers will receive a first fill discount.

ATV trails abound in area counties

Riders of all-terrain vehicles in Pennsylvania have hundreds of miles of choices in the region.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is opening the Northcentral Regional ATV Trail on May 24, and will operate until Sept. 29. The 650-mile riding area includes parts of Potter, Clinton, Lycoming and Tioga counties.

Permits are for sale for the use of designated Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and state forest connector roads. The cost of the permits — $40 for Pennsylvania-registered ATVs and $60 for nonPennsylvania-registered ATVs — serves to offset

implementation and management of the program.

ATV riders will have the unique opportunity for longdistance travel by permit on 163 miles of designated state forest trails and roads, 450 miles of designated local (township) roads, and 40 miles of designated PennDOT-administered roads.

Riders are encouraged to travel the preferred route, but are free to ride any trail or road in the area that is designated open to this use.

Responsibility falls on riders to plan their route and use only designated trails and roads, while avoiding those that are not open to ATV use.

In Elk County, the Trail of Dreams is an Elk County Riders ATV initiative to connect the communities

in Elk County through municipal roads and private land trails.

The connection would link with the Marienville Trails in Spring Creek and Highland Township, continue through to the Ridgway area, onto Fox Township then Jay Township and complete in Benezette Township. Another connection would be made to St. Marys as well north to the Johnsonburg/Wilcox area. Eventually the club hopes to continue due east to Cameron County.

In 2022, Elk County Riders ATV partnered with Sandy, Horton, and Huston townships to open roads from Elk County to Clearfield County, Treasure Lake Cayman Landing for

camping on the trail. Several fundraisers are held throughout the year to help with the project, and grants are applied for as well. https://www. elkcountyatv.com/

In McKean County, a privately owned ATV facility in Smethport — Majestic Trails — has more than 40 miles of ATV trails, and 23 miles of dirt bike trails.

Located at 2605 Route 46, Smethport, the facility also offers wilderness camping and picnic areas on 1,000 acres.

“Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride or a challenging ride, our ATV trails guide you through the Majestic Allegheny Mountains in Northcentral PA,” the website noted. All trails have one-way travel, begin and end at the trailhead, and are marked with colored arrows according to skill level.

Riders enter at their own risk.

The trails have mile markers to find lost riders, or riders needing assistance. Depending on the recent weather conditions, the trails could be dusty, muddy, icy or snowy.

By following the trail signage and rules, riders can help keep the trails in compliance with erosion regulations.
