Still a ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’: James Cagney returns on July 4th

One of the true Warner Bros. classics, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” — which Turner Classic Movies gives its traditional holiday showing Thursday, July 4 — is the 1942 biography of “born on the Fourth of July” (though his birthdate actually was July 3, 1878) showman George M. Cohan, It boasts one of screen history’s truly iconic performances, and James Cagney was rightfully awarded an Oscar for it. He does alternately energetic and, particularly in the picture’s home stretch, quietly affecting work. The film was released just a few months before Cohan’s death, and it’s been said that he saw and enjoyed Cagney’s portrayal of him, though he initially preferred Fred Astaire to play him. Cohan’s sister Josie is played by Jeanne Cagney, star Cagney’s real-life sibling; Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, George Tobias, Rosemary DeCamp and Richard Whorf (who was later a prolific television director) also are in director Michael Curtiz’s (“Casablanca”) cast, but there’s no debating that this is James Cagney’s show first and foremost.

“St. Elmo’s Fire” (Hulu, streaming): Widely known as a “Brat Pack” movie, director Joel Schumacher’s 1985 comedy-drama was essential in boosting the careers of several talents including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy. Mare Winningham plays the other member of a septet of close Washington, D.C.-area friends who face challenges in entering young adulthood; many of the actors are discussing their experiences on the film in the current Hulu documentary “Brats,” which McCarthy directed.
