King Uther Pendragon, ruler of England fell in battle, leaving no clear heir to the throne. Mourners from across the land gathered to lament their fallen king, but conflict over the next ruler swept the kingdom. Wise Merlin conjured a stone with a sword stuck deep into it. An inscription on the blade read: “Whoso pulleth out this sword from this stone, is right wise King of all England. Many men gathered hoping to free the sword, but not even the strongest of them could do so. As time went on and no one could remove the sword, many began to doubt Merlin. Finally, an unremarkable young man, Arthur, stepped up to the stone. With almost no effort, he withdrew the sword and assumed his rightful place as king of the land.
