In Harmony with Horses
“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”
In our profile of Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras (page 4) in this edition of Douglas Elliman Equestrian, the Argentinian polo giant refers to this equestrian adage, variations of which are attributed to Sir Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan, among others.
No matter who actually said it, however, the sentiment is certainly one that many of us share: There is something in the connection between humans and horses that brings an inner sense of balance, equilibrium, and harmony.
It is a theme that runs through all the stories you will encounter in this issue of the magazine. It is what animates organizations like Work to Ride, a Figuerassupported program in West Philadelphia that gives at-risk youth the opportunity to experience the healing power of horses and equestrian sports.
It inspires equestrians like Georgina Bloomberg to share her passion and make it more accessible through her venture The Rider’s Closet (page 46), which collects show clothes that riders have outgrown and distributes them to aspiring equestrians who could not otherwise afford them.
We also see it in the way that equestrianism so often intersects with other disciplines that value beauty and balance, from architectural design (a companion vocation for Figueras) to the craftsmanship of artisanal bootmaker Der Dau (page 10).
Ultimately, it is what drives so many of us to embrace the equestrian lifestyle, to pass on that passion to the next generation (as both Figueras and Der Dau founder José Der, Sr., have done with their children), and to seek opportunities to live in communities that share those values (page 8).
As you browse the properties in those communities, from Fairfield County in Connecticut and the Hamptons in New York to Palm Beach County in South Florida, know that our agents in these markets and others are here to help you bring the power of horses and the power of home into perfect harmony
The Next Move Is Yours.
Scott Durkin President and Chief Executive OfficerNacho Figueras and a Life Lived With Horses
by Lindsay BrockFor many, the equestrian lifestyle is a nomadic one where it’s difficult to set roots. One where “home” is a fleeting concept. For Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras, however, horses are home. They have brought him love, passion, success, and more.
Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Figueras first grasped a polo mallet at eight years old and was quickly swept away by the cultural appreciation for polo. “The sport of kings” became Figueras’ profession when he was 17.
Figueras’ appreciation for the animals that give their all to sport has inspired him to share the beautiful relationship between man and horse with the masses.Photography by Ori Harpaz Photography by Ori Harpaz
Since that unknowingly fateful moment at eight years old, Figueras has traveled the world, become the face of global powerhouse brands, including Ralph Lauren Black Label, and made a name for himself as a polo superstar. Polo was also the matchmaker that led Figueras to meet his partner of 25 years; model, photographer, and fellow rider Delfina Blaquier. They met at a polo match in 1997 and now have four children together.
When asked about the influence horses have had on his life and work, Figueras responded with the adage, “the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.”
Figueras’ appreciation for the animals that give their all to sport has inspired him to share the beautiful relationship between man and horse with the masses. He champions a horse’s ability to heal humans through his support of the organization Work to Ride, a prevention program that gives under-resourced Philadelphia youth a unique opportunity to interact with horses and participate in equestrian sports.
“The power of horses and polo is a beautiful thing,” Figueras said of the program. “That program is a dear part of my life.”
continued on next page
This past spring, Figueras once again dedicated both his passion and mallet to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, which returned to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. After a four-year hiatus, the event was back in a city Figueras admits he loves. “I think there’s no better backdrop for a polo field in the world than this one,” he said.
Figueras admits that if he didn’t sit atop the back of horses for a living, architectural design is likely where his professional efforts would be focused today.
Polo brings Figueras to Wellington, FL during the winter months where he and his family have cemented their place in the abundant equestrian scene. Figueras’ oldest son Hilario plays polo professionally alongside his father, while his younger son Artemio has followed suit at 13 years old. Blaquier and Figueras’ youngest daughter Alba can be spotted in the pony hunter rings at Wellington International, while their oldest daughter, Aurora, studies industrial design in Buenos Aires.
In the last year, Figueras purchased and meticulously redesigned a Wellington home. The space has become a retreat that was the missing piece to his family’s time spent in Florida. Featured earlier this year in Architectural Digest, the home blends inspiration from family, travel and—of course—horses.
Figueras’ resurrection of the Florida home was not his first toe dip in the pond of architectural design. He founded Figueras Design Group (FDG) in 2013, a development company formed with the Buenos Aires–based architecture firm Estudio Ramos, that focuses on equestrian communities in Argentina and beyond.
One such project, The Polo House by Nacho Figueras, is located at Fasano Las Piedras which sits within a nature preserve in the La Barra region of Punta del Este, Uruguay. The Erin Boisson Aries Team at Douglas Elliman is handling sales of the residences which overlook a polo field designed by Figueras himself, as well as an 18-hole Arnold Palmer golf course. Signature floor-to-ceiling glass allows for expansive views from each space, and a step outside offers access to private beaches, gardens, swimming pools, and tennis courts.
Figueras admits that if he didn’t sit atop the back of horses for a living, architectural design is likely where his professional efforts would be focused today. A stroll through any of his properties feels more like the tour of an art gallery or architectural museum than a residence, but as soon as Figueras’ family steps foot inside it’s clear that these places are home.

By Jacqueline KuronThough equestrian athletes who participate in high-level competitions are often on the road, there are a few key locations around the country that cater specifically to the equestrian lifestyle. These areas boast features including hosting key competitions, offering top training facilities, having riding trails for leisure, or providing property zoning laws that accommodate horses. We spoke to Douglas Elliman agents who specialize in equestrian properties to get the inside scoop on the best equestrian-friendly communities around the country. Here are the top locations they recommend.
Lic. Assoc. R.E. Broker
Westchester County, NY & Connecticut
Sally Slater recommends the horse communities in Bedford, North Salem, South Salem, and Armonk, NY, and Fairfield County, CT because they are located close to major horse show venues and New York City.
—Sally Slater, Lic. Assoc. R.E. Broker
There’s access to top trainers in every riding discipline and specialty builders and architects for barn needs. Local zoning regulations result in larger parcels of land required for horses. And, Bedford, North Salem, and Pawling, NY, as well as Greenwich, CT offer extensive trail systems.

Wellington, FL
Wellington is an epicenter of equestrian sport as the host of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), one of the largest and most prestigious equestrian competitions in the world attracting top riders, trainers, and horses from around the globe at all levels. In addition to WEF, South Florida is home to many other shows in every season, making it a year-round equestrian location. The biggest draw of Equestrian Club Estates is its proximity to WEF, easily accessible by walking or golf cart.
Equestrian Club Estates, a private, gated community adjacent to the Winter Equestrian Festival, is a great option for many riders.

[Westchester and Connecticut] have close-knit horse communities which include get-togethers.Julie Nelson Sales Associate
Palm Beach, FL
Wellington is a special place, but there are other neighborhoods close by including Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens that equestrians may also want to consider. The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Palm Beach Gardens is a new development that Julie Nelson, Sales Associate and rider represents.
Caroline Holl
Lic. Assoc. R.E. Broker
The Hamptons, NY
The Hamptons is known worldwide not only for its beautiful beaches and as a summer haven for celebrities, but also for its horse farms and the Hampton Classic Horse Show.
Horse farms can be found throughout the Hamptons, ranging from small and exclusive private farms to large barns with 100+ horses and mutiple trainers.
—Caroline Holl, Lic. Assoc. R.E. BrokerThe summer season culminates with the Hampton Classic, which attracts some of the top riders in the world. “When not horse showing, there is plenty of opportunity for down time for both horses and riders with trail rides on the farm or early morning rides on the beach,” Holl added. The Hamptons also offers access to fabulous restaurants, shopping, and cultural events, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
In addition to equestrian-friendly neighborhoods, the properties themselves must enhance the lives of horses and riders, owners and trainers. If you are searching for an equestrian property, aligning yourself with an experienced and knowledgeable agent in this specialized market ensures that you and your horses will find a home you love.

Many riders are also boaters. The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Palm Beach Gardens has a marina with 29 slips, so it’s another option for those wanting to be close to Wellington.

DER DAU EQUESTRIAN BOOTS: A LEGACY
OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
By Jacqueline Kuronxceptional craftsmanship is at the heart of every pair of Der Dau boots. The company was founded by Cuban immigrant Jose Der, Sr. more than 58 years ago. Working in a shoe repair shop, Der met an equestrian rider who asked if he could make him a pair of riding boots. From the first pair of boots Der made, his business grew largely by word of mouth into the luxury, bespoke brand it is today, still family run by Jose’s son Joseph Der.
Der Dau attracts top riders such as McClain Ward, Georgina Bloomberg, Ian Millar, Rodrigo Pessoa, Margie Engle, Karl Cook, and more for its expertise in boot making. Every pair of boots is bespoke and constructed from scratch—a rarity in the industry. A mold is made of clients’ feet, and patterns are made from their legs. Der Dau prides itself on using the finest materials from leather to calf skin, suede, exotic skins, canvas, and even vegan leather made from pineapple fibers.
“We buy leathers like diamonds,” said Joseph Der. “It’s really about the quality. We buy the best leathers from around the world. We buy the best components, meaning zippers, threads, orthotics, and built-in memory foam for foot beds. All our materials are the best out there. We make sure we’re always improving.”
A pair of Der Dau boots takes about six to eight weeks to make. Everything is constructed locally in the company’s Brooklyn headquarters by masters at their trade, many of whom are second- and third-generation craftsman. A pair of Der Dau boots typically lasts 10-15 years in comparison to two years for most other boot brands.
Joseph Der is upholding his late father’s legacy of bespoke craftsmanship while looking to the future and infusing his own vision and style into the Der Dau brand. “My father loved the horse shows. He was very popular in the equestrian world. But I want to take the company into the fashion industry.”
“It’s really about the quality. We buy the best leathers from around the world.”

SUPPORTING NEW EQUESTRIANS:
ONE THRIFTED PAIR OF BREECHES AT A TIME
By Lindsay BrockIt was a closet purge that first inspired Georgina Bloomberg to get into the clothing business. But, not in the way one might think.
“I was cleaning out my closet in the house I grew up in and realized that I had a ton of show clothes that were in great condition but had simply been outgrown,” said Bloomberg. “I didn’t know what to do with it all. I have a lot of friends who used to ride as kids and gave it up later in life, and I asked a few of them what they did with their show clothes. The answer was the same; it was sitting in their closets because they didn’t know what to do with it all.”
After searching tirelessly to find a place to donate her still show-ring worthy attire, the question of where to go next sparked an idea that eventually birthed The Rider’s Closet in 2006. It first started at the IHSA level with Bloomberg’s alma mater equestrian team at New York University (NYU) and spread to schools throughout the country.
Today, The Rider’s Closet’s mission is to ensure that riding apparel is accessible to scholastic riding programs, pony clubs, equestrian camps, equine charities, and individual riders in need. The apparel is all donated by equestrians like Bloomberg who want to see what they once wore help someone else follow their path to the competition ring.
When asked about her reaction to the almost immediate success of The Rider’s Closet, Bloomberg responded with a smile, “I still remember getting my first thank you letter and picture of a recipient wearing clothes they received from us. They explained how without us they would have been forced to quit. It made all my hard work worth it.”
The program serves riders of all ages and at every level of horsemanship throughout the U.S. In 2019, The Rider’s Closet merged with the distinguished EQUUS Foundation to further its reach and impact.
