Horses have enchanted the artist’s gaze at least since prehistoric painters adorned the cave walls of Lascaux during the Paleolithic era. In our current era of human history, few artists have represented the majesty and mystery of the equine form with as much sensitivity as the renowned photographer Raphael Macek. Macek, whose aptly titled photograph Immersion graces the cover of this edition of the magazine, explores the enduring bond between humans and horses that so many of us feel so deeply in our own lives. As he recounts in our “Behind the Lens” profile (page 4), Macek comes from a family of horse breeders in Brazil, where he grew up living on his father’s horse farm. “I think that creates a beautiful connection and respect between me and them,” he said. Indeed, that “beautiful connection” is the unifying theme of the stories in this issue. Just as Macek’s photography seems to summon the very souls of his equine subjects, Dr. Carole Holland’s veter inary practice strives to sound the depths of her patients’ inner lives. A proponent of holistic veter inary medicine (“The Gold Standard of Equine Care,” page 46), Dr. Holland believes in “treating the whole horse,” using acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation and herbal remedies, among other techniques, to diagnose and treat equine athletes with uncommon empathy. Readers may recall a story from the Spring/ Summer 2021 issue of Equestrian on the use of equine therapy to alleviate emotional stress and personal trauma. For this issue, we spotlight the organization Hammers & Heroes (page 10) founded by farrier Joseph Santos which offers therapeutic black smithing to veterans, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders. Hammers & Heroes truly taps into one of the elemental bonds between humans and horses. Finally, we preview the 2022 Hampton Classic Horse Show, running August 28 to September 4, with a look at Prixview (page 8), a sports data provider and fantasy gaming platform. Founded in 2021 by Olympic silver medalist Lucy Davis, Prixview invites users to learn about equestrian sports while competing virtually for real cash prizes—including thousands of dollars in giveaways during the Hampton Classic sponsored by Douglas Elliman.

As sponsors of the Classic since 2005, Douglas Elliman is proud to support an event that so joyfully celebrates the beautiful connection we share with our equine companions. Whether you are participating in the event, exploring equestrian properties, or simply perusing the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll join us in that celebration.

The majestic beauty and pure strength of a horse are no better captured than through the lens of Raphael Macek.

Raphael Macek

Viewing one of Macek’s images of the equine form evokes the feeling of seeing a horse for the very first time. The sharpness and detail he captures are more than the human eye could ever process in person. “I try to show people what they cannot realize for themselves,” Macek said about his photography.

Behind the Lens with BY JACQUELINE KURON

Growing up in Brazil in a family of horse breeders, Macek’s love and appreciation of the animal was instilled in him from a young age. “My grandfather was a horse breeder, and my father as well, so since I was [a baby], I was always with horses. I lived for some time when I was young at the farm where my father bred horses, so I think that creates a beautiful connection and respect between me and them. I can transmit a little bit about that in my images,” said Macek. While he photographed landscapes and other animals in his early career, horses were his calling and passion—and what he has focused on for the last 20 years.

Part of the challenge of working with animals is making them feel comfortable. Macek prefers to shoot the animals in their own environment. “Normally I bring my studio to the stables because if you need to transport the horse to a real studio, they get stressed and they need to be calm and relaxed,” he explained. Macek brings all the studio

The horses seem to respond best to being at Macekhome.has spent years honing his unique style of photography. He treats his subjects as supermodels, often portraying them with a black background and flashlight that creates a lot of shadows and light for a three-dimensional effect. His hyper-realistic images are usually tightly cropped to show the individual beauty of his models. “Every horse has different feelings, like a person; some are more shy, some are more happy,” Macek stated, continued on

6 and this comes across in his photographs—especially in the horse’s eyes, which seem to reflect human emotion.

“It's much more about the emotion of the horse. What the image transmits to you and what kind of relationship you have with the image. I try to bring a little bit of the moment I'm photographing for the person who is seeing the image on the wall. I want the person to really feel that the horse is there. That's the most important part for me,” Macek added. Macek’s work is represented by galleries in Dubai, England, Brazil and the United States and can be found in hotels and restaurants, as well as private homes. He often works with interior designers and architects and sells to people who don’t have any horses. “The horse is always an object of desire and inspiration and is a beautiful animal. People love horses everywhere.”

In addition to horse portraits, Macek travels around the world for his photography, most recently shooting a horse-racing circuit which took him to Dubai, the Kentucky Derby, and Royal Ascot in England. The final shots will make up one of two new coffee table books he’s working on; the second is on wild horses and will have an accompanying documentary. “We will be traveling for six months, shooting wild horses in California, Colorado, Nevada. We talked with the two biggest organizations who help to protect [wild horses], and they are very excited for the project. We are going to have a lot of exhibitions for the launch of the book. And together with the book, we are doing a documentary film about wild horses.”

For those who have never participated in the world of show jumping, equestrian competitions are often a web of jargon and confusing metrics—until now.

“Our data also powers our fantasy games. Whether people are well-versed in the sport or not, they’re able to understand the game and make predictions by educating them selves with this in-depth data,” Goutal said. “They can look back at patterns, trends, and historical performance to bring a deeper understanding of the sport.”

Founded in 2021 by Olympic silver medal ist and Stanford graduate Lucy Davis, Prix view is a sports data provider and fantasy gaming platform. Known for its fantasy show jumping games, Prixview allows users to learn more about equestrian sports and predict results to win real cash prizes.

Goutal expects that Prixview’s data will foster better understanding of equestrian competition, in turn getting more people interested, invested, and excited about the world of equestrian sports.

“Official records only publish the number of faults and the amount of time the round was completed in,” Goutal explained. Prix view’s data is much more comprehensive and insightful and includes class format, number of faults, where the faults were, number and type of jump, point of contact, which lead the horse was on, the arena’s footing, and more.

While this information is invaluable for the athletes and coaches themselves, it’s also an untapped opportunity to nurture exist ing fans and expand the sport’s viewership.

How Prixview is Making Equestrian Sports More Accessible Through Data BY HANNAH WARNE

“At the core, Prixview is a data company. We collect official, live competition data from show jumping sport. It’s a much deeper level of data than what’s been previously available,” said Prixview Director of Strategy, Partnerships, and Business Development, Clementine Goutal.

The fantasy games are free to play, and users win real cash prizes, making them a power ful engagement tool for the equestrian audience. During the Hampton Classic, Doug las Elliman will also sponsor thousands of dollars in give aways—making it an even more exciting option for both new and existing users. “People can get more invested, more involved, and feel more connected and engaged. It’s crucial to growing and engag ing the equestrian audience,” she added. "At the core, Prixview is a data company. We collect [a deep level of] official, live competition data from show jumping sport."

HAMMERS & HEROES: Therapeutic Forging for Veterans & First Responders

10

BY HANNAH WARNE Joseph Santos first joined his family’s horse shoeing business in the 1990s. As he honed his skill, excelled in his craft, and found success in the trade he’s so passionate about, he eventu ally came to run the business. But he never could have imagined where his love of blacksmithing would take him. After working with a group of other skilled forg ers to raise money for the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2014, Santos began brainstorming ways he could continue to give back to the community— and that’s when the idea for Hammers & Heroes was Hammersborn. & Heroes is a therapeutic forging organization for veterans, police officers, fire fighters, and other first responders. By allowing participants to work with their hands, and focus "[Forging] takes bad energy and turns it into good energy."

accomplish something. All of the same things apply to forging. They like the process because they understand it, but it’s a less dangerous application,” Santos said. “They’re not looking over their shoulder, they’re not on their phone. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where they can use their skills in a new way.” on a particular task, Santos helps them channel their energy in new ways. “It’s like going to talk to a therapist, but instead of a therapist—it's steel,” said Santos. “You have to focus. You can’t be thinking about other things—they become very focused and zoom in on what they’re doing. It takes bad energy and turns it into good energy.”

The organization is run out of Santos’ 30-acre farm in Woodbury, Connecti cut. When veterans and first respond ers arrive for their first visit, Santos walks them through the basics of forg ing—safety protocols, techniques, and tools. From there, the first assignment is to take a curved horseshoe and transform it back into a straight line. As participants’ skills develop with continued visits to the farm, the assign ments also become more challenging. In addition to the activities on the farm, Santos has transformed a retired horseshoeing trailer into Hammers & Heroes on wheels. He uses this mobile unit to visit community events, like VFW car shows, to publicize the program and get to know the local veterans and first responders. Though the current size of the farm and forge limits Santos to the number of visitors at a time, he has a big vision for the future. He plans to use ongo ing donations to expand to a larger location outfitted with a crisis center, meeting space, training program, and additional staff to provide the heroes with the tools and resources they may “Ineed.asked a police officer why he loved forging so much. There are different methods of performing chiropractic on a horse, but Dr. Holland was trained in the method using only her hands. It’s incredible that an average-sized person could adjust a 1,000+ pound animal using just their hands— but it works. To maintain a horse’s good health and wellbeing Dr. Holland recommends focusing on diet, nutrition, and 15 minutes of weekly body work or massage. “Many people don’t know that horses can get ulcers so quickly. If owners can maintain their horses’ nutrition and do a little bit of body work weekly, then [it’s easy for me] to keep an athlete sound.”

In addition to a routine physical examination of a horse, Dr. Holland evaluates for acupuncture sensi tivity. Acupoints can be used to diagnose and prevent lameness, relieve pain, heal gastrointestinal issues, and more. “It’s very beneficial because a lot of the time I can find the problem through acupuncture diagnosis before the horse becomes lame,” she said. Dr. Holland often combines acupuncture and medical manipulation treatments at the same time for added effectiveness. “A lot of times the horses’ backs are so sore that they don’t want chiropractic, but if you do acupuncture [first], it relaxes the muscles and allows the chiropractic to stay in place,” Holland explained. “For me, to have the two modalities in my practice works better.”

"I can find the problem through acupuncture diagnosis before the horse becomes lame." Holistic and integrative medicine use ancient Chinese methods in combination with traditional Western medicine to treat the whole horse using minimally invasive protocols. Dr. Carole Holland, a veterinarian for more than 35 years, began studying acupuncture and chiro practic—officially called medical manipulation—in 1996. Since then, she has integrated acupuncture, chiropractic, food therapy, and herbal medicine into her diagnosis and treatment of most equine ailments, from heart and kidney disease to back pain.

Equine athletes, like human athletes, need continuous training and physical therapy to maintain peak perfor mance in competition. Dressage and jumping put a lot of pressure on the horses to stay sound. Horses can get acupuncture while in competition, so Dr. Holland often travels with her clients to provide regular or preven tative care. “In the past twenty years, the popularity and need for [acupuncture and chiropractic] is huge because the horses respond to it so well—they love it—and I love making them feel better.”
