Imagine it is the weekend. Two days to head out into the great outdoors and have some fun. What toys are you reaching for? What adventures are you planning? Trail running, biking, climbing, walking, kayaking. The real question for most of us revolves around ‘what does the weather allow’, ‘what do I fancy’ and ‘do I have the kit’. Sometimes though, we hold back on the true adventures. The ones that involve us stepping out of the ordinary, that probably feature on a lot our bucket lists. We hold back because we’re not confident that we have the right experience or skills. Or we worry if we can cope if the weather changes (picture a sunny hill walk right before the mist descends altering the whole experience). Don’t put off bucket list adventures. But do get skilled-up in the same way as you get tooled-up with new fun toys. Since 2012 Glenmore Lodge has been partnered with Ellis Brigham. INSPIRING YOUNG LIVES The Youth Adventure Trust know first-hand the positive impact of outdoor adventure. Harnessing its power, they use the outdoors as a platform to transform the lives of vulnerable young people. Providing the chance to get outside, be adventurous and try new activities, the impact is immense. The Youth Adventure Trust believes that every young person should have these opportunities. Their 3-year programme based on outdoor adventure helps vulnerable and disadvantaged 11-16 year olds do just that. The programme combines outdoor adventure activities with consistent mentoring, guidance and support, helping to build the resilience and develop the hope, confidence and skills they need to face the challenges in their lives.

FITTING PROCESS Initial discussion: We listen carefully to your needs, including your intended activities and any existing foot problems that may affect your choice. Foot analysis: Measuring for size is only the start; we observe all parts of the foot to get a detailed understanding of their shape and volume. We also look at your biomechanics and test for any signs of instability, including over-pronation or over-supination. Trying on: Putting together our discussion and observations, we make recommendations from our wide range of quality boots. We check the fit, making sure there are no signs of discomfort, and offer effective solutions to support and stabilise your feet. Adjustments: Our expert staff are adept at making adjustments to the fit, using lacing techniques and alternative footbeds to fine-tune the comfort. Breaking in: Footwear moulds and softens over time, which is the final step to getting that perfect fit. We encourage you to wear your new boots inside at home before hitting the trail, and if there are any problems we are always here to help.

Footbeds: By supporting the arch, footbeds are able to reduce over-pronation or oversupination. This can alleviate discomfort and fatigue, helping you focus on the scenery rather than your feet! FITTING PROCESS Initial discussion: We listen carefully to your needs, including your intended activities and any kit carrying requirements that that may affect your choice. Torso measurement: Many of the packs in our range feature different back sizes and/or adjustable lengths. By taking measurements of your torso length, we can quickly and accurately match you to packs with an appropriate back length. Trying on: Putting together our discussion and observations, we make recommendations from our wide range of packs. We check the fit, making sure there are no signs of discomfort and offer solutions to stabilise the pack on your back. Adjustments: Our expert staff are adept at making adjustments to the fit, finetuning the torso length (when applicable), checking the harness and hipbelt and adjusting the stabilising straps to ensure the pack is sitting comfortably and loading weight evenly on to your body. Aftercare: We recommend trying the pack on again at home before heading outdoors, so you can get acquainted with both the fit and features. GREEN RIBBON EXPEDITION Anna Blackwell Stepping off the small boat, I heaved my overpacked rucksack onto my back. My first step was a short 3km hike to the Treriksröset, the cairn marking where Sweden, Finland and Norway meet in the Arctic. From there, a not-so-short hike of 1,000km lay ahead.

This has led her to pursue numerous adventures, from kayaking across Europe to spending three months walking 1,000 miles alone across France and Spain. This was the starting point of my Green Ribbon expedition; a solo trek of 1,000km across Arctic and Northern Scandinavia, following the mountains on the Swedish-Norwegian border. I’d spent the previous few months getting kit together, mapping a route and working out the logistics of posting ahead food packages to collect along the way, and now it was go-time. Over the next eight and a half weeks, I made my way south, wild camping almost every night and carrying everything I needed. My legs and body quickly adjusted to the 25-28kg I had on my back, while mentally, I got used to going up to five days at a time without seeing another person. As with any big solo adventure, there were plenty of highs and lows. During the first week or so I experienced more mosquitos than I had in the rest of my life – and that’s saying something as growing up I spent most of my summers in Sweden! Even worse, these mosquitos were so vicious and determined that they would bite through multiple layers of clothing and insect repellent. Shortly after escaping from the worst of the mozzies, the weather changed, and for what felt like an eternity, I was trekking through either torrential

rain or thick cloud. These conditions proved to be one of the biggest challenges I faced, as staying motivated and positive can be difficult when you’re alone, tired and sodden, with no views or company to distract you. On top of that, my boots and socks were almost constantly wet as there were very limited opportunities to dry things out. That said, it was undoubtedly worth it for all of the sensational, amazing moments: the views of mountains that stretched across the horizon and which I could gaze at from the comfort of my tent each morning, fresh cup of coffee in hand; the peace and serenity of being somewhere unspoilt by civilisation; the satisfaction of reaching the top of a long, steep climb and casting my eyes across a new panorama of mountains and forested valleys; and getting to the end of the day and feeling like I had really achieved something. Reaching the end of my trek was devastating. I had grown so accustomed to trekking every day, wild camping, and living out of a rucksack, and I wasn’t ready to leave it all behind. Sadly, I had to, but I have memories from that adventure that will stay with me for a lifetime.
