According to experts, a single exposure to nature can promote feelings of wellbeing that last up to seven hours after returning indoors. Whenever I catch that first sight of the hills, dropping down from Mam Tor into the vale of Edale, my eyes come alive with views of those heather strewn moors and windswept peaks. On this particular day, I am heading off wild camping, a way for me to feel at one with nature, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A way to refresh, find peace and calm on the moors.

My journey took me from Edale, along the Pennine Way and up Jacob’s Ladder onto the plateau of Kinder Scout, where I was planning to set up camp for the night. I laced on my boots and heaved my pack over my shoulders at around lunchtime, and with just a quick stop for a pork pie and cup-a-soup with a view, I hit Jacob’s Ladder just as the masses of day ramblers were heading home to warm sofas and glasses of wine. They must have been confused seeing just me and my 55L backpack heading up into the windswept moors of the Dark Peak. I pitched my tent at around 5pm, as dusk settled on the barren hills, and by 8pm my light was out and I slept soundly until sunrise the next morning.

I awoke to a dusty pink sky and a gentle haze over the moors that surrounded my tent and I. Not a sound could be heard, nor another soul seen; I had the whole of the Kinder Skyline to myself. I scrambled up gritstone rocks and my feet pounded on the narrow trail, the biggest smile plastered to my face all morning despite the overcast skies. Whatever the weather, this is the reason I love wild camping; for those isolated, peaceful mornings on a hilltop when the rest of the world is still sleeping, or so it seems.

At Grindslow Knoll, I descended back to Edale where a bacon sarnie awaited, and I was back in Manchester by 2pm to curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea for the rest of the day. Wild camping never fails to leave me feeling calm and refreshed, with that hilltop glow on my cheeks and the wind still tangled in my hair for a few days afterwards. The perfect escape from the city, even if just for the night.

FIVE WAYS TO ‘GO WILD’ Know Your Navigation Skills: It is essential to know good navigation if you’re heading out onto the moors, so brush up on your map-reading and compass skills beforehand. Rain, fog and high winds can make navigating much more challenging. It’s not too difficult with just a bit of practise!

Check the Forecast: No matter what time of year, the weather can be unpredictable when heading into the hills. Check the forecast for signs of rain, fog or wind, even in spring and summer! Make sure you also check sunset and sunrise hours so you know when to pitch up and pack down your tent.

Pack Light: The more wild camping you decide to do, the more you’ll start investing in better quality and lighter gear. It just makes the experience more pleasurable when you’re not carrying as much weight on your back.

Some of my essentials are the MSR Pocket Rocket, and a light sleeping bag like the Mythic series from Rab. Stay Hydrated: It can be hard to know how much water to bring for a wild camp. My best advice would be to hydrate as much as you can beforehand, then I usually carry a 2L Osprey Hydration Reservoir and 1L Nalgene for an overnight adventure. Check if there is anywhere you can fill your water enroute, or bring a water purification system like tablets, a Lifestraw or filter water bottle.

Leave No Trace: One of the most important things to consider if you’re wanting to wild camp in a National Park is the principal of Leave No Trace.

This means, leaving your camping pitch exactly as you found it - don’t leave rubbish, fire-pits, or any sign of your presence on the hill. Protect your natural landscapes and respect those who are dedicated to looking after them.

“Rain pelts the flimsy tin roof above me, and I glance down at my watch for the fourth time: 6:12 am. I had promised myself to hit the trail at 5:30, but a long night of listening to howling winds and crashing thunder convinced me to stay inside as long as possible. It’s nearly daylight now, and the storm is showing no hope of abating. Tentatively, with my hood pulled snug around my face and gripping my trekking poles so tight that my knuckles turn white (or maybe it’s the freezing cold), I take my first steps in my attempt to run, solo and unsupported, across the Cordillera Oriental. The route has, to my knowledge, never been completed in a solo effort, and I’m incredibly nervous. Maps have been hard to come by in some places, and impossible in other segments.

This is true exploring. As I run out of the small village near the Peruvian border and the gravel road and tin roofs fade away behind me, my nerves turn to excitement. The faint path ahead leads me up into the clouds that envelope the high peaks, and soon I am immersed in them, completely cut off from the rest of the world.

At the top of the first big climb (4,900m elevation), rain has turned to snow, and my nerves are back again: it’s at least three days to the next village, and the poor weather could be a real problem if I don’t find a decent shelter to spend the night under. Dark arrives rapidly as I sprint down the last climb of the day, my Merrell MQM Flex footwear maintaining impressive traction on the snowy, muddy trail, while their GORE-TEX lining keeps my feet remarkably dry in the inhospitable conditions. A small pueblo in the valley kindly invite me to sleep in the school, and I watch the night’s incredible thunder and lightning display from my warm and dry bivvy under the generous school roof. It’s the kindness of strangers that has always amazed me about travelling in the mountains.

In the morning, I pack up my frosty bivvy and begin climbing again, this time to 5,100m and into the next valley. I filter water at a small stream, and move steadily for ten hours, creeping closer towards my goal. It’s a simple routine that I will follow for 17 days of running in the Bolivian Andes, facing bad weather, difficult navigation, gnarly trails, high altitude, and freezing nights. The Bolivian Andes is one of the toughest ranges I’ve met so far in the world, but also one of the most beautiful, with snowy peaks, turquoise lakes, impossible wildlife, and night skies that I’ll remember as long as I live.”

Initial discussion: We listen carefully to your needs, including your intended activities and any existing foot problems that may affect your choice.

Foot analysis: Measuring for size is only the start; we observe all parts of the foot to get a detailed understanding of their shape and volume. We also look at your biomechanics and test for any signs of instability, including over-pronation or oversupination.

Trying on: Putting together our discussion and observations, we make recommendations from our wide range of quality boots. We check the fit, making sure there are no signs of discomfort, and offer effective solutions to support and stabilise your feet.

Adjustments: Our expert staff are adept at making adjustments to the fit, using lacing techniques and alternative footbeds to fine-tune the comfort.

Breaking in: Footwear moulds and softens over time, which is the final step to getting that perfect fit. We encourage you to wear your new boots inside at home before hitting the trail, and if there are any problems we are always here to help.

Footbeds: By supporting the arch, footbeds are able to reduce over-pronation or oversupination. This can alleviate discomfort and fatigue, helping you focus on the scenery rather than your feet! For autumn/winter ’18 we were the exclusive launch partner for Lowe Alpine’s new Altus backpacks. These exciting new styles combine a carefully thought out back system with a no-nonsense feature set to deliver a series that resonates with dedicated outdoor enthusiasts.

The Altus pack comes in three different capacities to cater for an array of itineraries from Munro bagging to multi-day hikes. There are also female specific ‘ND’ versions for each capacity, with differences in the shape of the shoulder harness, shape and fit of the hipbelt and shorter back lengths.

BEHIND THE DESIGN As part of our launch of the Altus series, we visited Lowe Alpine’s head office to meet with their team and get the lowdown on the design process and who they’d made these packs for.

‘One of the best things about the Altus pack is the carry system. We call it the Air Contour+ system, it’s quite a stiff frame but still flexible, it transfers load into a very supportive hipbelt even though they are on relatively small packs. So the benefit of that is, it’s quite a small pack but you might be carrying something fairly heavy in there like bivi kit, sleeping bag, water and overnight food, but you don’t have a big volume as you’re not out for days and days. Having that really good load transfer means you have a better time moving in the mountains.’

As Tim explains ‘Providing product and packs to enable people to have more fun and be more active in the mountains, more easily’ is at the core of what Lowe Alpine does. ‘Things like our world class carrying system allow you to carry load better and have more fun and make the mountains more accessible. The Altus pack is one of the packs that is delivering that.’

FIELD TESTING ALTUS PACKS

Lowe Alpine carry out extensive testing of their products before anything gets into production, but crucial to our staff’s ability to advise and help customers is their first-hand experience of the products in action. To enable this with the Altus series, we sent our staff on a weekend training session in North Wales, where they could test the packs in the mountainous environment for which they were designed.

Rosy, Bristol Shop: ‘I used the ND30 on a soggy scramble around Snowden.

Unlike other female-specific designs, the Altus ND series had a carry system that adjusted easily to fit my back. The slightly raised lumbar pad let the hip belt rest comfortably on my hips throughout the day - I barely noticed the bag on my back as I scrambled up the hill!’

SUREfit is our in-store fitting service. Developed over many years, it is a way of fitting and a system of training. Including in-house and brand-led training sessions and product testing, the SUREfit programme ensures Ellis Brigham staff have the skills and knowledge needed to help you find the best product for your needs.

FITTING PROCESS Initial discussion: We listen carefully to your needs, including your intended activities and any kit carrying requirements that that may affect your choice.

Torso measurement: Many of the packs in our range feature different back sizes and/or adjustable lengths. By taking measurements of your torso length, we can quickly and accurately match you to packs with an appropriate back length.

Trying on: Putting together our discussion and observations, we make recommendations from our wide range of packs. We check the fit, making sure there are no signs of discomfort and offer solutions to stabilise the pack on your back.

Adjustments: Our expert staff are adept at making adjustments to the fit, fine-tuning the torso length (when applicable), checking the harness and hipbelt and adjusting the stabilising straps to ensure the pack is sitting comfortably and loading weight evenly on to your body.

Aftercare: We recommend trying the pack on again at home before heading outdoors, so you can get acquainted with both the fit and features. It is also worthwhile checking you can fit everything you intend to carry – if there are any problems we are always here to help.

BACKPACKING For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the great outdoors, multi-day backpacking trips provide the perfect opportunity to do just that.

With days spent exploring new trails and nights spent under the stars, breaking out of the 9-5 routine and discovering a simpler way to life can help restore a sense of balance; an antidote to the stresses of our modern, switched-on lives. The UK has a wealth of excellent routes to test your endurance: the West Highland Way, South Downs Way and South West Coast Path will all reward your efforts with stunning views along the way. If you’re looking for a longer adventure, the GR5 Trail offers up 660km of hiking via the spectacular French Alps.

DAY HIKING PACKS For those done-in-a-day hikes, start by choosing a pack that will sit comfortable and stable against your body, whether fully loaded or lightly packed. LUMENS EXPLAINED: In simple terms, lumens are a measure of the total amount of light emitted in every direction from a light source. The higher the lumen rating, the more light that will be emitted and the brighter the light source will appear. When it comes to head torches, the lumen ratings are an easy way to compare between the models. However, lumens aren’t everything; depending on what the head torch has been designed for, a range of lighting modes, beam patterns and additional features will also be available. These play a big part in how suitable the torch is for your chosen activity.

“Since we started Hilleberg, we have always worked hard to make the highest quality tents, and to make them so they will last a long time. It is part of who we have always been, and it is a big part of our sustainability plan. We want to make tents that the original owners can use, and then pass down to their children to use.

That said, as with all things built to last, it’s impossible to have a tent last a long time without some maintenance and repairs. Parts do “wear out,” so you might need to replace the zips at some point, or the elastic webbing that connects the inner and outer tents. After 10 years, the tent might need a new floor.”

“We know this, and we build it into our company: having full repair capability is part of our “responsibility” ethos, and we have repair personnel in both our Swedish and US offices. We also work closely with repair companies in Europe, to the point of training them, so that they can produce the quality repairs that we demand.

We can repair nearly anything, and while some things are more difficult than others, we can make the tent fully functional again. A hole in the pole sleeve is a repair you might not notice. On the other hand, repairing where a bear clawed the tent - something we have dealt with a surprising number of times - will be noticeable, but the repaired tent will be fully functional. Our repair staff are justifiably proud of their skill, and they enjoy getting a favourite, much-used tent from a customer and repairing it so the customer can keep using it for years to come.

The most common repairs we do are to floors and zips. Floors, of course, take a beating, so at some point they will likely need some attention, up to and including replacement. And while using a footprint will make the floor last longer, it doesn’t protect the inside of the floor.

All of our tents are designed so that doing a complete floor change is a straightforward operation, and it is one that we have lots of experience with. Zips, too, are something that get lots of wear. We have yet to find a zip, from any supplier, which can stand up well to sand and grit. Here especially, maintenance is crucial. Keep the zips clean, and keep them out of the dirt.

We do know customers with 20- or 30-year-old tents that work just fine, with no repairs, and taking good care of your tent is the key. Making sure your tent is dry before you store it is a simple thing that makes a big difference. Avoiding excess exposure to the UV rays is another.

Unfortunately, lightweight fabrics are more susceptible to the effects of UV. If you’re going to be pitching your tent frequently in high UV conditions - glaciers, high altitude peaks, deserts and the like - consider bringing a tarp to protect your tent.

If you do longer trips, such as months-long treks or around the world travel, be prepared. I am always surprised at those who go on long bike trips and take a repair kit for their bike, yet somehow expect that their tent will never need maintenance or repair.

Having the capability to do repairs is very important to us, and not just because we call ourselves “the tentmaker”! For us, it’s about value: we want to make sure our customers have access to the highest quality repairs if they need them. But interestingly, the number of repairs in all our repair facilities compared to all the tents we’ve sold over the years are very few.”

EN 13537 TEMPERATURE RATINGS The Standard EN 13537 ‘Requirement for Sleeping Bags’ was introduced in 2002 in an effort to standardise the temperature ratings given to sleeping bags. It has now widely been adopted by manufacturers and the results allow reliable comparison between different brands and bags.

The two ratings that you should focus on are the comfort and the limit temperatures.

Based on the assumption that women sleep colder, we would suggest that women (and anyone who feels the cold more) should focus on the comfort temperature and men should focus on the limit temperature. You want to make sure that this represents the minimum temperature that you expect to experience.
