EDITOR’SNOTE
Value-added kitchen I often fall prey to nice packaging and cleverly marketed products. In this day and age where everything has to be photo-ready (I’m referring to all those Insta-worthy product packaging, restaurant interiors and even food plating), it’s hard not to be taken in by aesthetically pleasing products. However, my inner voice still reminds me to question the value of prettily packaged products once in a while. Sure, there is a value in wellthought-out marketing concepts but at the end of the day, the products should carry out their function well. One such area in the home where the function should trump form is the kitchen. Sure, goodlooking kitchens are wonderful. But if they are not
equipped to take on the demands of cooking, then there is not much value in them. In this issue of SquareRooms, we have included a guide to help you figure out where to spend and where to save on your kitchen renovation (page 46). The cooking zone is where you’ll spend most of your renovation budget so we hope to help you decide what is essential and what can be scrimped on. Also in this issue are the latest kitchen trends (page 36), products (page 42) and surface ideas (page 52) so that you can create a cooking zone of your dreams!

RUG-GED TEXTURES Tiffany’s latest collection of rugs is a celebration of weave structures and yarn material combinations in woven form.
EXPERIMENTAL HANDS With a focus on materials, fabrication, and the experience of the
physical object, Tiffany believes in creating relevant discourse on new technologies for the future.
TIFFANY LOY, textile designer We speak to the industrialturned-textile designer on why she decided to go into the world of textiles, and find out more about the unique works that were a result of the switch INTERVIEW Germaine Cheah PHOTOS Tiffany Loy
HOW AND WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN DESIGN BEGIN? I studied Industrial Design at
WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS? I am a very visual person
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FROM YOUR COLLECTIONS? The project “Expanding
so I tend to have more visual modes of input and research.
Rectangles” has a special place in my mind, because it’s an ongoing pursuit to explore how the limitations of the weaving loom can be transformed into the starting point for unlimited expansions.
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT TEXTILES THAT DREW YOU TO WORKING WITH IT? My industrial
design training had given me a certain intuition in predicting how materials like timber, plastics and other fixed-form medium would behave. But textiles are different, they are fluid, but have structure – which is really intriguing and refreshing for me. It still is.
WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS GOOD DESIGN?
It doesn’t matter what “good” design is. It’s more important for design to be relevant, to offer something new. A piece of work may not be very polished, or functional, or “good”, but if it can change or broaden your perspective, or be the starting point to greater inventions or applications, then that’s relevant. WHAT’S NEXT IN THE PIPELINE FOR YOU? I’m currently pursuing a masters
NUS, and that was my first contact with design. Prior to that, I’ve always been interested in fine art and took it as a subject throughout my secondary and tertiary years of education.
degree in Textiles at the Royal College of Art. I’d also like to take some of my projects further, but I’m keeping an open mind for the next two years to explore both new textile and non-textile media.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY? It’s not quite a philosophy, maybe
more like an approach or attitude, but I believe that the designer plays an important role in pushing the boundaries of material applications, and in creating relevant discourse on new technologies for the future.

ocated on the ground floor of a shophouse in Telok Ayer sits a new multiconcept venue by the Supermarket Company that bring the arts and dining together. reminiscent of the iconic brickfaced buildings of Singapore’s past. Together with a wooden door that is constructed with 100-year-old teak reclaimed from old Chiang Mai villages, the design elements create a space that is tactile and sculptural yet avant-garde and trendy. Ensuring that the food is as good as the ambience, the culinary team at the Arts Club is led by head chef Bertram Leong, whose career includes serving at Raffles
Hotel Singapore and Ritz-Carlton Millennia. With his rendition of French Mediterranean cuisine, diners can expect a scrumptious meal flecked with rustic, comforting and occasionally Asian flavours from an all-day dining menu. You can opt to start with the delightful Tomatoes & Tofu ($14), which is dressed in a sweet and savory medley of white miso, shiitake, red wine vinegar; or dive straight into the Seafood Fettuccine ($25) tossed with Manila clams, crab meat and mussels. If you are craving something heartier, try the Locally-Bred Spatchcock ($28), a tender oven-roasted French coquelet served with bacon matchsticks and a creamy garlic mash. What’s good food without good drinks? Beverage manager Din Hassan leads the bar programme, where he takes the best of Southeast Asian flavours and distill it into a concise menu of cleverly reinvented classics. Time-honoured favourite Burma’s Pegu Club ($20) offers a tart, refreshing gin-based cocktail that is bestowed with the complexity
of bitters, while Kuala Lumpur’s Jungle Bird ($20) is a bracing blend of rum and Campari. The culinary and beverage team also develops special menus comprising dishes and drinks inspired the works of each artist that is featured at Telok Ayer Arts Club. Guests will be able to enjoy these limited-time offerings throughout the duration of each artist’s showcase; giving them a chance to experience the creative process through food and drink.

SAVVY ISLANDS The island table is emerging as more than just a breakfast nook; there’s actually immense potential for other uses. “The spaces in the home are becoming more fluid and having an open kitchen island could also double up as a dining or social gathering area for friends and family,” says April Kwan, Activity Leader (Communication & Interior Design team) at IKEA Southeast Asia. “You can even incorporate smart features like our TRÅDFRI remote control lighting to save energy or build in a RÄLLEN integrated wireless charger on your island.”

You could even go beyond the kitchen and install these on the TV console or wardrobe doors for a uniformed style take.

ORGANISED STYLE Elevating the aesthetics of basic storage to new levels of refinement, the SieMatic Kitchen features generously sized, tinted glass surfaces for the cabinet doors. Viewed as a polished jewellery showcase rather than mere storage for kitchenware, it hosts individually controlled LED lighting which has been discreetly integrated within the cabinetry. When lit, it shows off the high-quality wood veneer backing of a finely-worked herringbone structure.
Upcoming kitchen trends for 2019 are rough touches, unpolished matte colours, textures and patinas found in industrial architecture.
METAL WORKTOPS Metals are definitely having their moment and it’s shining the spotlight on EDL’s Fenix NTA (Nanotech Alloy) selection. This super-matte worktop comprises a sheet of metal and a surface treatment of next-generation acrylic resins. Soft to the touch unlike the starkness and harshness of metal, the anti-fingerprint Fenix NTA boasts other revolutionary features like low light reflection and the thermal healing of superficial micro-scratches within its hardwearing metallic surface.

HOME ECONOMICS WHEN IT COMES TO KITCHEN RENOVATIONS, IT’S NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL. MANAGE THE COST OF CRAFTING YOUR DREAM COOKING SPACE BY FIRST UNDERSTANDING WHAT TO INVEST IN AND WHAT YOU CAN SCRIMP ON TEXT Fidz Azmin

SPEND C O U N T E RTO P The workhorses of the kitchen, counters take a beating on a daily basis especially if you’re a home chef. Besides their role as a worktop, they’re also key to broadcasting your space’s aesthetic to onlookers. Splurge on a quality surface – like engineered quartz. Not only is this man-made material hardwearing and scratch -and stain-resistant, it doesn’t demand any special treatment, just a good old fashioned wipe-down with gentle detergent and warm water.
SAVE FLOORING Floors are subject to the stress of everyday shuffling, spills and splashes. Don’t blow your budget on soft stones like marble which is unable to take the high traffic action, or laminates that will warp with water exposure. Durability is a priority, which is why old school tiles are the go-to material for most homeowners. The best part is, tiles come in an array of patterns, shapes and finishes – making it easy to match your floors with the kitchen decor.

Ceramic tiles are the most affordable of the lot, but is more porous and less tough than its porcelain counterparts. Consider stones such as marble and granite that exude an upscale vibe, or glass and stainless steel that boast a contemporary edge and are a cinch to clean.

SINK Although the sink sees a lot of action, you don’t really have to opt for anything overly fancy because it is fundamentally just a vessel for washing your dirty dishes. No matter if you need a single or double-basin sink type, a simple design in stainless steel should suffice. Stainless steel is a popular material that is hardwearing, effortless to clean, and inexpensive to boot. Plus, we love how it adds an industrious edge to this part of home.
C A B I N E T H A R D WA R E Details matter. When it comes to knobs, pulls and handles, anything that’s outdated or flimsy may affect the overall appearance of your cabinets. Procure quality fittings that complement the design of your space, or go for hidden pulls to create an illusion of seamlessness.
LIGHTING Visibility should never be obscured or compromised in the cooking space for the sake for safety. As function is priority, focus on equipping the kitchen with task lighting first. These types of light fixtures are generally less costly as opposed to their decorative counterparts – so pull back on expenses here. You can always adorn this room with fancy lighting when you have a more comfortable budget to work with.

C A B I N E T O R G A N I S I N G S YS T E M What lurks behind the cabinet door is just as or perhaps more important than the facade. Interior fittings vary from owner to owner depending on your needs and creature habits. A cabinet organising system built to suit your personal style doesn’t only keep items in check and within reach, it transforms the kitchen into a functional space that allows you to perform and complete tasks efficiently and safely.
FAU C E T One of the most frequently used tools in the kitchen, the faucet is an equipment worth spending on particularly for serious cooks. There are numerous features to consider before making your purchase. Take into account details like the spout height and reach – which is basically how curved the spout is – and the material finish where chrome is most durable and your best bet if you’re a heavy user. A pull-down or pull-out hand spray is handy too to keep your faucet flexible.

SPEND C O O K TO P Don’t scrimp when it comes to procuring a cooktop. The quality of your hob shouldn’t be compromised because of the very fact that you rely on this appliance every single day. Fortunately, there’s no need to outfit your cooking space with the latest top-of-the-line appliance. A modestly priced model packed with the necessary features is what you should be seeking.
50 NOV
SAVE OV E N Whether built-in or freestanding, ovens are essentially built for the purpose of baking. The price difference between a mid-range and high-end lies in features like touchscreen control panels, additional grilling accompaniments, the option to steam cook or self-cleaning functions. If you’re one who occasionally bakes when the mood strikes or during occasions, choose solely the essentials.
ISLAND The spatial design of a kitchen shapes the way it functions. If space and budget permits, put your money into building an island. The payoffs include additional storage and prepping area. But that’s not all, the island can play role as a social hub as well. Pull up several chairs to transform it into a table for mealtimes. This thus saves you the trouble (and precious square footage) of having to carve a niche for an entire dining area.
SAVE GALLEY Formed when two rows of cabinets are seated parallel of each other, the galley is ideal for pint-sized rooms. This layout makes the most of a constrained floor area to offer adequate space for prepping and storing stuff. As everything is almost within reach, chores can be completed in a jiffy. Just one thing to note: be prepared for traffic jams if there are more than one chef using the room at the same time.

COUNTER PARTS WHAT'S THE RIGHT COUNTERTOP MATERIAL FOR YOUR KITCHEN? HERE’S THE LOW-DOWN ON POPULAR SURFACES
TEXT Rossara Jamil
SOLID SURFACE A composite material, solid surface offers various benefits that have made it a popular material among homeowners.
52 NOV
Pros:\
Cons:
This man-made material comes in a host of colours, so you can find something that suits your tastes easily. It is durable and easy to maintain. One of its perks is its absence of joint lines, so it is sought after for L-shaped kitchens. You can even join it seamlessly with a sink in the same material. If there are scratches and stains, buffing the surface will freshen it up.
While it is fairly durable, direct heat and sharp objects can damage the surface. Small cuts and scratches are more visible on dark surfaces. Note that not all solid surface materials are made equal. Look for blends with more acrylic content for greater durability.
ENGINEERED QUARTZ Predominantly made of quartz – more than 90 per cent – and mixed with polymers, resins and pigments, this is a premium surface that is also hardwearing. Pros:\
Cons:
Heat-, stain- and scratch-resistant, quartz offers fuss-free use even in kitchens that are used daily. The smooth surfaces are easy to clean. Quartz also comes in a variety of colours and patterns, so it offers a good range of options for your desired kitchen style.
While it is resistant to heat, like all stones, it can be damaged by sudden and extreme temperature changes. In L-shaped or large kitchens, there may be joint lines, depending on the size of the slabs. This would require extra care and cleaning. Price wise, quartz can be a hefty investment for the kitchen.
Pros:\
Cons:
A less expensive option, tiles are durable and offer a host of design flexibility. Glazed, porcelain and granite tiles are recommended for countertops due to their non-porous nature.
With tiles, there are grouts to note. Cement grouts stain easily, so will require sealing to support heavy cooking. Uneven surfaces can occur too during installation and with inappropriate tiles. So, opt for flat tiles instead.
TILES Due to the arrival of new materials, tiles are less commonly used for the kitchen countertop these days. Tiles have a certain charm, for example, in creating the retro vibe of yesteryear. These days, tiles are available in many sizes and looks, making them creative choices.

GRANITE Think of granite and durability comes to mind. The patterns on granite make it a much-loved option too.
Pros:\
Cons:
Beautiful and striking, marble elevates the look of the home by virtue of its distinct grains. Therefore, the standout material is perfect for openconcept or dry kitchens.
Marble countertops are high maintenance. It stains and scratches easily, so it’s not ideal for curry and wine lovers. To minimise such issues, coat the marble with a sealant once a year or twice if you do heavy cooking. One of the more expensive countertop materials, it can be a significant investment.
54 NOV

MARBLE This natural stone, with its veins and swirls, offers beauty loved by many. It is also a premium material that, however, requires tender loving care.
Pros:\
Cons:
Granite comes in light and dark colours, offering design flexibility. Heatand scratchresistant, granite is a hardy option for the kitchen.
That said, it is a material that can chip or crack from impact. A porous material, granite requires yearly sealing to resist liquids and stains. Aside from its premium price, also note that it will have joint lines in L- or U-shaped kitchens.
IMAGE COURTESY OF THE MONOCOT STUDIO
STAINLESS STEEL Look inside commercial kitchens such as those in hotels and restaurants, and you will see stainless steel countertops. Stainless steel is ubiquitous in industrial kitchens for many reasons, and many homeowners are taking ideas from them. Pros:\
Cons:
Aside from being nonporous, stainless steel is resistant to water, heat and stains. It is also hygienic, fighting bacteria, mould and germs. Stainless steel counters look elegant too, and the shiny surfaces help to reflect light to make the kitchen look larger.
It scratches easily and can be prone to dents if it is not installed properly and be met with knocks and pointed objects. Some stainless steel surfaces show more smudges and fingerprints than others. It can be noisy too.
Pros:\
Cons:
This resilient material requires simple maintenance for everyday cooking. It comes in a selection of woodgrain patterns. So, you can enjoy the warm look of wood without the fussy maintenance. Non-porous and resistant to microorganisms.
Joint lines are a concern. With panel sizes measuring 305cm by 130cm, it may not be suitable for some kitchens. You should also avoid direct heat on the surface.

here’s a certain amount of freedom that comes with having your own place, with the tip of the iceberg being the ability to design and curate it to exactly how you want it to look and feel. Things were no different for this family of four. After scoring themselves a fourbedroom unit in the Goldenhill Park development, they roped in Risan Sun from local interior design firm Richfield Integrated to transform their dream home into a reality. The design brief was fairly simple, albeit with a slight twist: a modern-Scandinavian concept. This gave rise to a striking combination of bold black-and-white tones and soothing wood shades that would culminate in a sleek yet cosy home.

The amount of thought put into creating the home’s new look is evident right from the get-go. Even before entering the home, visitors are greeted by marble-effect hexagonalshaped tiles on the floor. “The owners wanted a totally different feel on the exterior compared to the interior flooring, as well as to create a demarcation between the two spaces. We decided to use hexagon tiles because they are gorgeous, versatile, and they have the ability to make any space more visually interesting,” Risan explains. Upon stepping past the front door, a towering
wooden structure captures one’s attention. As the owners had specifically requested for their new home to encompass smart storage solutions, the unique structure was designed and constructed with that purpose in mind. Complete with storage units and a settee that allows the owners to comfortably put on shoes, the home’s DB box was also hidden within the structure, creating a neat and streamlined look. A coherent image can be found throughout the 1,300-square foot home in the form of a cosy interior, defined by glossy surfaces, polished

Backed by a sectioned wall clad in woodgrained laminates, the feature wall also incorporates a plethora of storage units fronted by tinted mirror panels. Sharing the same area, the dining zone was given a similarly modest look, albeit one that is subtle yet full of detail. Simple furnishings, such as a lightweight dining set and geometric pendant lamps give the space an uncluttered look, while the brown accents from the dining set are the perfect complement to the wood laminates of the

In the kitchen, quartz countertops and an aluminium backsplash fulfil the homeowners’ need for a sturdy and durable space that could keep up with their regular cooking sessions. Meanwhile, keeping the space free from visual clutter is a series of cabinets that were spray-painted in grey, serving as a refreshing alternative to conventional white and wood finishes.
Despite adopting a predominantly monochromatic colour palette, the master bedroom gives off a sense of cosiness with its collection of comfy furniture. Against the vinyl flooring, a welcoming King-sized bed and customised side tables contribute to a homely appeal. othing is left to chance in this previously dated-looking apartment which is almost two decades old. “We reworked and refreshed almost everything from the floor plan to the electrical works,” says the design team from Versaform who took charge of this overhaul. With their expertise and divine intervention, every detail of this home now works beautifully with a laidback industrial-style backdrop setting the stage for the homeowners’ existing furnishings. “The homeowners wanted a mix of industrial and resort styles,” reveal the designers of the occupants’ preferences. “They also brought over a fair bit of their living and dining furniture which we needed to
incorporate into the industrial-resort setting.” To make room for these pieces, the designers decided to keep the look of the communal zones as streamlined as possible. Walls in a warm and classic tint of white paint allow the homeowners’ Balinese-style decor accents and brand new Suar wood dining set to take precedence in the dining zone. grey laminated doors. Look closer and one will find a striking outline which frames each of the cabinet doors in streamlined finesse. “We left a recess for each outline to function as handles,” explain the designers of their understated and clever modification. To enhance the appearance of space, they laid the homogeneous floor tiles in a staggered pattern. “This stretches the floor area and makes the kitchen appear larger,” they add. Another staggered tile arrangement but in a diagonal format flanks the feature wall of the living space. While it is true to a certain extent that dark, grainy colours tend to close the space in, the designers were not concerned about this aspect as this living room has the luxury of space. They reveal, “The ceiling height is around 3.2m and the wall length is substantial to accommodate this outstanding feature wall.” If anything, these woodgrained accents usher in an organic and laidback feel to downplay the tough and rugged qualities of the industrial style.

This bedroom belongs to the married couple’s only son. The 18-year-old requested for a masculine colour palette and the room is therefore swathed in dark woodgrained accents paired with deep tones of grey.

For the master bedroom, a uniformed flow of laminates sporting subtle geometric patterns defines the space. It is applied to most of the carpentry works and forms part of the headboard feature wall. “We decided to go with black for the remaining feature wall to draw out a bold contrast,” explain the designers. The common bedroom, which belongs to the homeowners’ son, is decked out in masculine tones of black and woodgrained textures. After adding a super single bed and the wardrobe, there is little room left for a proper study. The designers tackled this tight space issue with a custombuilt study desk at a compact size of 1.8m in length and 45cm in depth. Wall-mounted storage with open niches is then worked in to maximise the wall space. “Having these open shelves lightens the visual bulk of the storage fixture,” say the designers. This offers more breathing room and a sense of spaciousness in this previously compact room.

e live surrounded by colours, shades and light, all of which have a profound influence on a space and the people within it. And when the homeowners saw this threebedroom apartment in Faber Walk, they immediately knew that they wanted to incorporate their love for the water into their home, in colour form. With the help of designer Christin Apriyanti from interior design firm Distinct Identity, the homeowners spent two months reconfiguring and modernising the 1,066-square foot apartment, and ended up with a charming abode that oozes tonnes of personality.
84 NOV
To create the home’s bold and striking look, an abundance of blue and black tones were chosen as the main colour palette. In addition to that, the homeowners also wanted their communal living spaces to encompass an open plan layout. “The owners like to host a lot, so they wanted one big communal space that would be able to accommodate their frequent gatherings, Christin explains. This led to the hacking of the full-height partition wall in the kitchen, allowing the cooking zone to open into the dining and living room. The resulting space offers an open perspective, which maximises the flow from one end of the apartment to the other.

Along the home’s entryway, a gold-plated logo in the shape of a house is embedded into the metal grille structure. Upon closer inspection, one can discern that the logo depicts the letters “W” and “E”, which depicts the homeowners’ initials. Created by Christin, the unique design transforms an ordinary apartment into a dedicated one-of-a-kind space for the couple.
On the opposite end of the communal zone, the living room abounds in monochromatic hues, with a bulk of it chalking up to the woodgrained laminates used on the television feature wall. “We chose to use wood laminates as the warm shade would be able to balance out the strong dark colours in the kitchen,” explains Christin. Instead of having all the laminates in a vertical layout – which would have been too monotonous and boring – some of the laminate strips were arranged in a slanted orientation that gives the overall structure a more interesting and playful quality. Further back in the couple’s private chambers, there is an air of calm and serenity, which is a result of the navy blue
hues that cover almost all of the room’s vertical surfaces. Then, to balance out of the cool tones, Christin introduced warmer shades through a customised headboard, bed frame and side tables that were all constructed out of dark wood laminates. On one of the bedroom walls where the television set is mounted, it’s hard not to be taken by the pair of embedded cove light features that flank either side of the wall. “As the bedroom is quite small, having this cove light feature extend from the floor all the way up to the ceiling helps to draw the eye upwards, which in turn makes the space feel longer and bigger,” says Christin.

Prized possessions take up residence in cabinets behind fully see-through glass doors, allowing the owners to know which items are there without having to open the door. Meanwhile, open shelving units offer easy access to shoes and other accessories.

A section of partition wall swapped out in favour of a glass sliding door to promote seamless movement between master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe.
As there was a smaller bedroom right next to the master boudoir, it was decided to convert the room into a walk-in wardrobe, which now houses the homeowners’ extensive collection of clothes, shoes and bags. To help the new space better serve its purpose, the original swing door entrance was sealed off, while a section of the partition wall between the two rooms was demolished in favour of a glass sliding door. By doing so, the couple is offered a seamless transition between the sleeping chamber and the walk-in wardrobe. There’s no denying that colours play an important role in interior design, and through the clever design sensibilities of both Christin as well as the homeowners, the result is a home that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. And at the end of the day, it proves that there is nothing arbitrary in this world. Instead, it’s all about harmony.

aking the decision to purchase a home after renting is a big step. For these owners – an expatriate and his Singaporean wife – their hearts were set on this resale four-bedroom condominium apartment. Not only is it located in the convenient location in Robertson Quay, but it also provides the space they need for their lifestyle. Life for the couple involves frequent travels, plenty of entertaining at home and collecting treasured objects of art and antiques that they love to mix up with contemporary pieces. “The new apartment must provide a setting for the existing furniture. They consist of pieces
from different eras and genre of styles – antique, midcentury, such as Eames and String, and contemporary ones such as IKEA and HAY,” shares Wiliam Ng, the principal architect of Studio Wills + Architects.

Given that it’s a home for two, William and fellow architect Kho Keguang looked into transforming the interior layout to provide more living room space. One of the things they did was to open up the original master bedroom, located next to the
living area. Following that, two common bedrooms away from the living area, one with an attached bathroom, were combined to become the master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe. This reconfiguration has made it possible to

connect a lounge area to the living area and a guest bedroom with attached bathroom as well. “The open plan facilitates home entertaining of between eight to 10 persons each time, explains William. That said, opening up the original master bedroom resulted in a structural wall left standing in the centre of the open-plan living area. The team decided to transform it into a
feature. Awash in black, it serves to anchor the living area. As a result, too, the dining area, on the other side of the wall, enjoys an intimate setting. The team also optimised recessed areas by incorporating builtin storage units and bookshelves. Accommodating the couple’s possessions from their 2,400-square foot rented apartment to the 1,733-square foot one was another challenge. William and Keguang also strove to strike a balance

between doing too little and too much. The latter would give the owners little room to restyle the home in the future. William adds, “The challenge we set for the project was to create a duality; an expansive, open-plan apartment to facilitate home entertaining and yet intimate at times when it is just the couple alone. The result is a spacious home, with pockets of space to relax, made dynamic with visual displays and a sense of liberty to change things up as and when the owners wish.

H
ome is where we relax and unwind; a sanctuary where we can escape to from the bustle of urban life. And one way to achieve this sense of peace and tranquillity is by eschewing loud colours and garish elements in the interior design, and keeping to a minimalist yet impactful palette. In this 4-room resale flat, design firm Minimo & Minimology wanted to create a home that is beautiful to live in, easy to maintain and yet tasteful in its use of colours and materials. They catered the flat’s design to its owners’ refined
taste – two sisters staying together – and took inspiration from the minimalist movement and Japanese Zen philosophy. As such, everything in this newly renovated resale flat is well proportioned and streamlined, with no overbearing design element in sight. As in any Japanese-inspired modern home, its materiality comes to the forefront of the interior design. In this particular home, wood veneer and natural marble are the two mainstays, and are used liberally throughout the 1,130-square foot home. These organic materials, especially when coupled with the home’s use of neutral colours,

result in truly relaxing interiors that evoke a sense of peace and tranquillity. One of the main challenges in this home was to come up with a way to incorporate storage without weighing down the space. Since this is an old HDB flat, the designers were not allowed to hack down any walls to make more room. Instead, the design team incorporated storage into the interior design through carefully considered carpentry. This is best seen in the living room. The designers clad the entire stretch of wall with panels of wood veneer to form a clean and

unfettered expanse. A closer look reveals that each panel is actually a casement door, and when swung open, reveals plenty of storage space and even hides the entrance into the bedrooms. Two of these veneer panels open up and slide into hidden pockets to reveal the television console. This architectural design is a clever way of keeping the home in its clean and minimalist state. When all the panel doors are closed, the living room becomes a self-contained space that’s separate from the private quarters. The designers also came up with a clever way to elevate the living experience by carving out a round cove light immediately behind the sofa. Subtle yet striking, this design element is a quiet focal point that doesn’t distract from the home’s minimalist ideals. In line with the living room design, the kitchen is similarly sleek and refined. Because of its long
and narrow layout, the designers went with a single galley configuration that maximises the square footage. All the cabinetry is clad in the same wood veneer as the one seen in the living room, continuing the design language throughout the home. The designers even managed to fit in a marble island counter in the middle of the kitchen, providing a flexible work surface for food preparation. Because of the clever manipulation of floor plan, the bedrooms in this flat feel as if they are tucked away from the rest of the home. Transitioning into the private space immediately puts you at ease as you step through the threshold of louvred wood panels. The designers continued the pairing of wood and marble to great effect, and concealed all storage for a sleek and seamless visage.

MASTER BEDROOM Taking full advantage of the high ceiling in the master bedroom, the room’s original windows were enlarged in order to introduce more natural light into the space. Meanwhile, after relocating the bed to the opposite end of the room, a towering headboard was installed. By employing an unstructured manner in which the individual synthetic leather pieces were arranged, the result is a visually interesting design feature that has a playful quality about it. MASTER BATHROOM With the old tiles on the floor and walls hacked away and new marble-lookalike homogeneous tiles taking its place, the master bathroom is an elegant and stylish private sanctuary. An expanded vanity with storage cabinets that were clad in a combination of bronze and grey mirrors provide a luxurious station for the occupant’s dressing and makeup needs.
LIVING With the homeowners wanting a brand new look for their home, designer Emily Tan from Weiken.com@Midview was brought in for this home renovation. design with PURPOSE The Via Solferino collection of faucets and mixers is the perfect finishing touch to any contemporary bathroom
122 NOV
T
hese days, the bathroom is more than just a utilitarian space. After the bedroom, it is seen as space to recharge and rejuvenate. It is no wonder that design-savvy homeowners are looking at spas and hotels for inspiration when designing their bathrooms. As with all beautifully designed spaces, it is the details that matter. And Italian brand Gessi is able to meet homeowners’ demands for functional yet beautiful bathroom fixtures. With over 20 years of experience under their belt, the makers of Gessi’s luxurious bathroom fittings and furnishings possess a keen eye for detail when it comes to designing products that are good looking yet easy to use. One such collection from the brand is the Via Solferino range that is inspired by Italian fashion that perfectly balances beauty with functionality. Addressing homeowners’ needs for efficient bathroom fittings, the faucets and mixers from this collection are designed with eco-conscious technology.
When the mixer lever is in the central position, the tap distributes cold water only, eliminating the need for activation of the boiler, which reduces energy consumption. On top of its eco-conscious engineering, the Via Solferino collection also combines meticulous quality with environmental awareness. Produced within the zero environmental impact Gessi Park, the brand combines formal research and optimisation of production processes with a high emphasis on protecting the environment. The result? A remarkable range of groundbreaking bathroom products that uses significantly less amount of water than its counterparts, making the bathroom fittings both beautiful to look at, and a pleasure to use. With its elegant forms, functionality and usability, the Via Solferino series from Gessi is the perfect finishing touch to a luxurious bathing space. the perfect SLEEP Akin to sleeping in your favourite tee, Eurotex’s new Jersey Cotton collection is the perfect new accessory for your mattress
B
efore you go to sleep tonight, take a look at your bed. Besides your mattress, we’d be willing to bet that there are other accessories like bed linen or pillows placed on top. After all, to have a quality sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed and re-energised every morning, you’ll need much more than just a bare mattress. But with so many manufacturers and suppliers of bedding products in the market, it can be difficult to make a choice. Setting itself apart from the pack is Eurotex. The local brand already has a comprehensive range of high-quality
bed linen, curtains, cushions and bath accessories readily available for consumers, but their latest Jersey Cotton collection is one to be truly impressed by. Whether young or old, male or female, we all have that one favourite tee. It’s the one where once we put it on, we immediately feel warm, cosy and safe. And this same feeling is something Eurotex is trying to recreate with their latest collection. Fully crafted with 100 per cent natural cotton jersey fabric and with a thread count of 700, each product is unbelievably smooth and soft, giving you the same feeling as if you were sleeping in that favourite tee of yours. What’s more, the collection is available in 10 contemporary colours and in either a fitted
sheet set or a quilt cover set, catering to all your specific needs. Since its inception in 2003, Eurotex has cemented itself as Singapore’s leading bath, bedding and ready-made designer curtain brand. In addition to its physical stores located at Compass One, Century Square, Bedok Mall, Tiong Bahru Plaza, Northpoint City and White Sands, Eurotex is also available online through their newly launched commerce site. Put it simply, luxury living is now only a few clicks away. EUROTEX 3 Ubi Crescent, Yong Lee Building tel: 6846 9222 www.eurotex.com.sg
