I love watching someone unwrapping a gift. There’s the sense of anticipation that they will love it or the mounting fear that they will have to fake a look of delight and appreciation if it’s not quite what they were hoping for (and they know you’re judging their reaction). We’ve been told since childhood that December is the season of giving. And even with all the discussion of holiday commercialism and the nagging sense that everyone is just looking to get, I still think planning what to buy, shopping for it, wrapping it beautifully, and finally giving it are some of the greatest pleasures of the holidays. But for many, holiday shopping becomes a stressful chore—another thing to check off the list at the busiest time of the year. Lately I’ve tried to get more creative and not give traditional presents, especially for people who already have a lot and don’t need another token present to regift. I like giving handmade items. (Check out our creative handmade gift-exchange party on page 46.) Not being a crafter, I usually lean toward food or gardening: dried tea herbs or tomato sauce from the summer. When I buy something, I like it to be a present people can consume and use—such as fancy jams or dried fruit—instead of knickknacks. I shop online, of course—mainly for friends and family in far-off places—but I also like to shop local and support whatever brick and mortar is trying to carve out their niche downtown. By next December we’re more likely to remember all the thought and consideration we put into what we gave rather than what we actually got. So this year while I’m creating lists, careening around town in the final days before Christmas, or doing late-night shopping on the internet, I’m going to make sure I enjoy myself. I think STEPHEN ORR, everyone on my list will be able to sense Editor in Chief that I had fun during the process. instagram @steporr Happy holidays and Merry Christmas! twitter @orrsteporr

The pros know it all comes down to measuring. Measure every straight run you plan to light— roofline, porch overhang, window trim— to figure out the total length you need. Don’t go past the manufacturer’s recommendation for how many strings you can plug together, and connect only identical strings.

H O M E G AT H E R I N G S WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

CUT THE CARBS - LOSE THE WEIGHT THE SLIMMING EFFECT OF MULBERRY LEAVES

I

f you want to lose weight you should focus on lowering insulin levels. Insulin is a fat promoting hormone, that takes sugar from the blood and stores it, mainly as fat. It even stops the body from burning its own fat. So the more insulin you produce, the fatter you will likely be.

Since carbs are comfort foods, it’s hard to eliminate them. But if you want to keep eating bread or pasta, then try the so-called carb blockers. They stop the carbs from being fully digested, which helps lower blood sugar levels and thus insulin.

TEST YOURSELF

The best natural carb blocker is called DNJ. It works in harmony with the body and is based on natural mulberry leaf extract. It can help block much of the sugar you otherwise would have digested and will help you start losing the weight and look your best. Difficulty losing weight? Gaining weight around the belly? Craving sugar? Feeling tired and irritated when lacking sugar? These are some clues that your blood sugar and insulin levels might be unstable or too high. Try Zuccarin to promote healthy blood sugar levels and weight loss.

So how do we lower insulin? Getting sufficient sleep helps. Eating less protein (especially beef and fish) also lowers insulin. But most importantly, eat less processed carbs!

A recent study was done at the University of Kuala Lumpur. They were told to take a palm fruit extract containing a special ratio of “super antioxidants called tocotrienols, known to lower oxidation in the scalp and support better – and new – hair growth.

Important Legal Notice from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida

S W E E P S TA K E R U L E S

If you are a current or former owner or lessee of certain Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, you could get cash and other benefits from a class action settlement. Si desea recibir esta notificación en español, llámenos o visite nuestra página web.

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging that consumers sustained economic losses because they purchased or leased vehicles from Ford Motor Company containing allegedly defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation and its affiliates. The Settlement includes certain vehicles made by Ford (the “Subject Vehicles”). Ford denies any and all allegations of wrongdoing and the Court has not decided who is right. If you have already received a separate recall notice for your Ford vehicle and have not yet had your Takata airbag repaired, you should do so as soon as possible. When recalled Takata airbags deploy, they may spray metal debris toward vehicle occupants and may cause serious injury. However, many Ford vehicles affected by this settlement have not been recalled. Please see www.AirBagRecall.com for further details about whether your vehicle is recalled and, if so, what you should do. Am I included in the proposed Settlement? The Settlement includes the following persons and entities: • Owners or lessees, as of September 5, 2018, of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, and • Former owners or lessees of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between June 19, 2014 and September 5, 2018, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before September 5, 2018. A full list of the Subject Vehicles can be found at www.AutoAirbagSettlement.com. The Settlement does not involve claims of personal injury. What does the Settlement provide? Ford has agreed to a Settlement with a value of approximately $299.1 million, including a 20% credit for the Enhanced Rental Car/ Loaner Program. The Settlement Funds will be used to pay for Settlement benefits and cover the costs of the Settlement over an approximately four-year period. The Settlement offers several benefits for Class Members, including (1) payments for certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred related to a Takata airbag recall of a Subject Vehicle, (2) a Rental Car/Loaner Program while certain Subject Vehicles are awaiting repair, (3) an Outreach Program to maximize completion of the recall remedy, (4) additional cash payments to Class Members from residual settlement funds, if any remain, and (5) a Customer Support Program to help with repairs associated with affected Takata airbag inflators and their replacements. The Settlement website explains each of these benefits in detail. How can I get a Payment? You must file a claim to receive a payment during the first four years of the Settlement. If you still own or lease a Subject Vehicle, you must also bring it to an authorized dealership for the recall remedy, as directed by a recall notice, if you have not already done so. Visit the website and file a claim online or download one and file by mail. The deadline to file a claim will be at least one year from the date the Settlement is finalized and will be posted on the website when it’s known. What are my other options? If you do not want to be legally bound by the Settlement, you must exclude yourself by November 26, 2018. If you do not exclude yourself, you will release any claims you may have against Ford, in exchange for certain settlement benefits. The potential available benefits are more fully described in the Settlement, available at the settlement website. You may object to the Settlement by November 26, 2018. You cannot both exclude yourself from, and object to, the Settlement. The Long Form Notice for the Settlement available on the website listed below explains how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a fairness hearing on December 11, 2018 to consider whether to finally approve the Settlement and a request for attorneys’ fees of up to 25% of the total Settlement Amount and incentive awards of $5,000 for each of the Class Representatives. You may appear at the fairness hearing, either by yourself or through an attorney hired by you, but you don’t have to. For more information, including the relief, eligibility and release of claims, in English or Spanish, call or visit the website below.

very year, Charlotte Smith gets her whole family involved in creating bright and cheerful Christmas scenes throughout their Southport, CT, home. Using pom-poms, yarn, ribbon, and felt, the author of the crafty blog At Charlotte’s House makes easy, do-ityourself holiday decorations with her kids—Eleanor, Oliver, Martha, Louisa, and Arthur. Gathering in the kitchen, where she turned a narrow pantry into an art-supply closet and coated a thrift store dining table in durable Maxx Gloss paint, they make new ornaments and garlands to add to those from previous years. “A lot of my decorations are thrifted or sale fi nds that we put our own touches on. I stock up on great deals in a broad color palette to make each year easier, and I blend the old and new decorations together,” she says. Instead of traditional holiday colors, Charlotte uses her home’s palette of pink, green, and blue. “If you look at vintage Christmas decorations, you’ll see they don’t have to be the traditional red and green. There are blues, lighter greens, and pinks, and they can work with what you already have,” she says.

TO-DO LIST SAYS OTHERWISE. ENTER PASTRY CHEF ZOË FRANÇOIS, WHO SHARES FIVE SPECTACULAR SWEETS THAT ARE EASIER THAN THEY LOOK.

H O L I D AY PAV L O VA PA R FA I T S “This dessert looks really elegant even though you just throw it together,” Zoë says. “You can’t mess it up.” Most of the components—sugared cranberries, lime curd, raspberry sauce, and meringues—can be made days ahead of time. On the night of the party, simply layer everything in your nicest stemware.

WHITE C H O C O L AT E CHEESECAKE BOMBE Zoë reinvented cheesecake, starting with the flavors: ginger and white chocolate in the cake, hazelnut in the crust. The dome shape, which was inspired by snow globes, is created by baking the cake in a bowl. A glossy ganache and white chocolate shavings hide any imperfections. “Think of them as insurance,” Zoë says.

If you’re crunched for time, buy meringues instead of making your own.

FOR ME BAKING IS ALL

but I get that a lot of people are daunted by it,” says pastry chef and cookbook author Zoë François. “I try to take the intimidation out of making dessert.” Since starting her blog in 2007, Zoë has become known not only for her spectacular creations, which tend to generate thousands of likes on Instagram (@zoebakes), but also for the way she walks readers through her recipes with easy-to-follow instructions and videos. That’s why she’s just the person to help home bakers during the holiday season. “It’s a time of year when we all want to bake something festive, but there’s not a lot of time or room for error,” says Zoë, who lives in Minneapolis with her husband and two sons. The five festive desserts she created for BH&G® don’t require any hard-to-master skills or obscure ingredients and can be made in part or entirely in advance. In other words, “even a beginner can pull them of,” Zoë says. “But they’ll look like you’ve been baking all day.”

EGGNOG BAKED ALASK A Eggnog ice cream and red velvet cake put baked Alaska into the spirit. Get ahead by freezing the cake topped with store-bought ice cream for up to a month. On the day of the party, unmold the cake and spread on Swiss meringue (the most foolproof type of meringue to make, Zoë says). A quick turn under a kitchen blowtorch results in a ta-da appearance.

If you can’t find eggnog ice cream, add bourbon and nutmeg to vanilla ice cream for the same flavor.

S I LV E R & G O L D YULE LOG Between the meringue mushrooms and the impressive swirl of buttercream inside, this bejeweled Yule log may look almost too ambitious to attempt. But in reality, “each step is super simple,” Zoë says. Most tasks can also be done in advance, which takes off the pressure on Christmas Day. The only key bit of timing: Be sure to roll the cake while it’s warm out of the oven to avoid cracks.

EVERYTHING HAS TO HAPPEN START TO FINISH ON THE DAY OF YOUR PARTY.

If you were a contestant on The Great British Baking Show, this might be your showstopper entry. Made with rum-soaked dried fruits and warm spices, this fruitcake is a world away from the one that’s been circulating since the 1960s. The cake is so straightforward to make that you’ll have ample bandwidth to create the dramatic candied hazelnut crown. (See page 118 for the technique.) Q

Finn and Gus Allen lead their parents, Jeff and Alison, on an evergreen-foraging expedition across the frozen lake behind their cabin in Hayward, WI.

The cabin’s woodsy backdrop and white, black, and Army green palette are ready-made for Alison’s Scandinavianinspired holiday touches. Embracing the existing decor curtails the amount of decking the halls required.

Alison and Jef Allen sent Santa a change-ofaddress card this year. The couple and their two kids are spending Christmas at their home away from home, an A-frame cabin in Wisconsin. There’s never an itinerary, but there’s always something going on. During the countdown to Christmas morning, they’ll cut a tree at a nearby farm, Alison’s parents and brother’s family will arrive, and they’ll spend plenty of time sledding, snowshoeing, and sitting around a fire. You might think Alison, the organizer for this holiday away, would be sweating the details. Hardly. The creator of the DIY-centric blog Deuce Cities Henhouse stays as chill as the craft cocktails she has icing in the snow. It helps that she’s a planner. Days before they depart their Minneapolis home, she gathers party gear and decorations into bins and premakes a few provisions so all that’s left is a stop at the local grocery. She keeps her focus on what’s most important to her crew: morning cofee, good music (Jef is in a band), and making Christmas memories for the kids— matching pj’s included. They all help trim the tree and wrap garland around the banister. And once the bufalo-check stockings are hung from the mantel, it’s officially Christmas. December 2018 |

WINTER WARM-UP COCKTAIL

Alison recommends premaking a batch so you don’t spend snow time playing bartender.

x 2 cups rye whiskey x 1 cup amaro bitter liqueur (such as Averna) x 1 cup amaro herbal liqueur (such as Amaro Nonino) x Orange bitters x Wide strips of orange zest x Whole cloves In a pitcher combine whiskey, both amaros, and 8 dashes orange bitters. Serve over ice. Twist orange zest over each glass to release oils, then rub zest around the rim. Prepress cloves into a few zest strips for garnish. Makes 10 cocktails.

A sparkling forest of crafted and store-bought mini trees ups the cool factor, and a handmade paper snowflake crowns the scene. For trees, wrap yarn around paper mache cones and secure with hot glue.

Take a trip to Santa’s workshop—no sleigh required—where everything is kid-approved and kid-friendly. The minimalist raw-wood dowel tree looks sophisticated enough to display anywhere, but teeny-tiny teddy bears and tactile ornaments make it feel at home in a kid’s room or play space. The toy bin (or floor) is the place to start; small misfit toys and trinkets make great tree decor. DIY trimmings like the felt stockings and yarn-wrapped ornaments will give the tree just enough uniformity. Craft them as a family—everyone knows Santa needs his elves. Wrap it up with a chunky knit scarf as the tree skirt.

CANDIED HAZELNUTS NOTE Save these until an hour or two before you’re ready to top and serve the cake: Humidity and temperature can wilt the caramel strands. 1. Set a heavy cutting board or 15×11-inch baking pan along the edge of the counter. (Skewers will wedge under the cutting board while candied hazelnuts set.) Place parchment paper on floor below to catch caramel drips. 2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place hazelnuts in a shallow baking pan. Bake 5 to 8 minutes or until toasted. Transfer to a towel; rub to remove loose skins. Gently twist a wood skewer into each hazelnut while warm; set aside. 3. In a medium saucepan stir together sugar, the water, and corn syrup. Use a pastry brush dipped in water to brush down any sugar crystals on sides of saucepan as mixture comes to boil. Bring mixture to boiling over medium-high without stirring. Reduce heat to medium. Once mixture starts to caramelize (about 15 minutes), remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Dip a skewered hazelnut into caramel and lift to see if caramel is ready. When caramel coats hazelnut and drips off in long strands, secure end of skewer under cutting board, letting caramel drip onto the parchment paper below. Repeat with remaining hazelnuts. Let stand until caramel is set, about 15 minutes. 5. Gently twist skewers to release hazelnuts; arrange on cake. Remove bowl from saucepan. 2. Beat mixture with a mixer on medium-high 8 to 12 minutes or until light, fluffy, glossy, and stiff peaks form. 3. Transfer ¹⁄2 cup meringue to a pastry bag fitted with a ¹⁄4-inch round tip (to pipe the mushrooms); set aside. 4. Let bowl with remaining meringue sit at room temperature 10 minutes. Beat in butter 2 Tbsp. at a time on medium 10 minutes or until fluffy. After all the butter has been added, beat 1 minute more or until buttercream is creamy and glossy. Beat in vanilla and a pinch of salt.

After all the butter has been added, the mixture will come back to a smooth buttercream.

ROLL ]

A hot cake is pliable enough to roll without cracking, and a towel keeps the cake from sticking.

After meringues have baked and cooled, make divots in the flat sides of caps. Insert stems.

After the cake cools, unroll it, add buttercream, and reroll using the towel to lift and guide the cake.

Dip a clean small paintbrush into edible gold luster dust and tap the brush over the mushrooms.

Use a serrated knife to cut off an end of the roll, and attach the piece to the top with buttercream. Q

EATto hit RESET Overdid it at the holiday party? Stayed up late decorating? Here’s what to eat to feel better ASAP so you won’t miss a minute of fun.

TRY PINEAPPLE & MINT Don’t be

tempted to skip breakfast. A light, hydrating meal will help last night’s food move through your gastrointestinal tract and flush out extra water. It sounds counterintuitive, but waterrich items like fruits and vegetables help your body release excess water, says Wendy Bazilian, Dr.P.H. and R.D.N., author of Eat Clean, Stay Lean. The fiber in the produce also helps move things along. And mint has been used for centuries to help soothe indigestion.

TROPICAL MINT SMOOTHIE Blend until smooth two handfuls fresh spinach, 10 mint leaves, ¾ cup fresh or frozen pineapple cubes, 1 medium banana, ½ cup each Greek yogurt and milk, 1 Tbsp. lime juice (about half a lime), and 2 tsp. honey (optional).

Eating an apple and drinking a glass of water is more effective than drinking two glasses of water, says Gina Bria, coauthor of Quench: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration. Because the water in fresh vegetables and fruit is in a gel phase (technically called H3O2) it matches the water inside our cells and so hydrates better than tap water. | December 2018

Almonds give you filling fiber and protein so you won’t feel hangry. Popcorn is a whole grain carbohydrate, which helps your brain release more of the feel-good, stressless brain chemical serotonin, says Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N.

if you … HAD A FEW TOO MANY COCKTAILS TRY EGG WITH AVOCADO & TOMATO

You can blame that pounding headache and queasy stomach on dehydration and low blood sugar. The fix: Water to rehydrate and a filling meal that will balance your blood sugar. Try our better-for-you version of a greasy breakfast. You get protein from the eggs, healthy fat from the avocado, fiber from the whole grain bread, and extra water from lettuce and tomato, Gorin says. Avocado has healthy fat plus potassium, an electrolyte that alcohol tends to deplete but helps your muscles, nerves, and brain work effectively.

The knobby, spicy root is thought to ease nausea by lowering levels of vasopressin, a hormone that causes the digestive tract to spasm, resulting in queasiness. AIR TIME Dust, dander, mold, smoke, germs, and harmful chemicals are hanging around in the air inside your house. These can be especially irritating for people with allergies, asthma, or immune system issues. Enter air purifiers. They can help eliminate gases and particles. When you buy, focus on what’s important to you: whisper-quiet operation, smart features, room size, efficiency, or the cost of replacing filters.

winter SAFE

Four smart strategies to help keep your furry family members warm, dry, and protected during chilly weather.

DEGREES FAHRENHEIT

When the temp dips to freezing or below, be aware of potential cold-weather issues like frostbite.

Many dogs benefit from a cozy coat or sweater, but short-hair and/or small dogs definitely need one; they lose heat more easily. Booties are also a good idea because cold, ice, and salt can irritate, dry out, or even injure paws, says Jennifer Maniet, D.V.M., with Petplan pet insurance in Newtown Square, PA. Get your dog used to the booties by having her briefly pad around in them indoors for a few days before going outside.

CARE FOR PAWS Wipe paws with a warm, damp washcloth after going outside. Also have the groomer trim tufts of fur between pads and nails to limit snow and ice buildup, says Shian Simms, D.V.M., chief of veterinary medicine at Bideawee in New York City.

KEEP DOGS LEASHED If your dog gets separated from you in snowy conditions, she can get lost because her usual smells are muted. Dogs can be difficult to see off-leash in the snow, especially if they’re white. Another safety move: Clear a path through the snow so your dog can easily reach a potty spot. Q

attracted to its sweet smell and taste, Simms says. Even a small amount can harm them. Clean up antifreeze spills ASAP, and if you suspect your pet has licked any (symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stumbling), immediately take her to the vet hospital. Also remember that cats have been known to crawl into car engines seeking warmth, so bang on the hood and honk the horn before starting your car. On a related note, ask your vet to recommend a pet-safe ice-melt product to use on the driveway and sidewalk. Some can be toxic.

STOCKINGS

Humble hosiery has evolved into a personal decor statement. THE ORIGINAL The ritual of hanging stockings

at Christmas began with tales of St. Nick sliding gold coins down the chimney and into the stockings of a family in need. The kids waiting fireside in our December 1930 issue hung two everyday socks for Santa to fill, but flashy, ever-larger stockings soon became the norm. THE UPDATE Mantels tend to sport one of two

looks: totally coordinated or, thanks to new additions as families grow, more of a hodgepodge. Either way, take stockings as an opportunity to show off some personality with funky stitching, whimsical motifs, and bold monograms. Our picks will hold their own in a mix or look great multiplying across the mantel.
