lazily) in the magazine industry. “____ makes a perfect summer appetizer. ____ is this season’s perfect paint color.” Editors tend to use perfect as shorthand for something that’s the very best, very good, or sometimes just OK. But by overusing this perfectly acceptable word, are we in danger of eroding its meaning? We have high standards for our stories and photography in the magazine, but most of the time I am actually searching for imperfection rather than the opposite. I prefer to eat a delicious cake that looks a little wonky instead of an exquisite-looking dessert that is bland and ordinary. I like a wild and gestural flower arrangement over a tight and sterile one. I want my house to look lived-in. I love nothing more than the happy accident that ends up being completely right. I look for these unintended moments of beauty whenever I can. This summer, groups of flowering tobacco seeded themselves in the cracks along my driveway. When I come home after work, there they are, all pristine and white and smelling of jasmine. I didn’t plan it, but I’m glad I spared the seedlings the Weedwacker back in June. Why am I thinking of imperfection now? Autumn. For me, fall reveals the beauty of things that are going slightly off. Take leaves, for instance. Lengthening nights cause plant tissues to stop producing chlorophyll and begin to decay. Less green means the brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows that were always hiding in the leaf come to the fore. We love pumpkins and gourds for their genetic mutations—the weirder and wartier, the better. A rose in late November, even wind-battered, is a treasure. During this season of winding down and transition, keep an eye out for fall’s happy accidents. And more importantly, with the holidays around the corner, give yourself a break. A neutral foundation keeps the calm in a renovated Virginia home, where basketballs bounce and a DIY mom may be building furniture on the living room floor.
T
here aren’t many parents who would let their 5-year-old have a basketball hoop in her bedroom. Jenni Holmes went one step further: She built the backboard. “Lola’s my tomboy, and I wanted her room to be special,” she says. (Jenni’s husband, Jonathan, is a basketball coach, so practice is encouraged.) In the rest of the house, sports equipment gives way to farmhouse-style furnishings and a sophisticated neutral palette. Jenni’s DIY skills, though, shine on. She credits attitude more than skill. “I don’t mind failing, which is a good quality because you’re definitely going to fail a few times,” she says. “That’s how you learn.”

In the den, wood built-ins got a coat of white paint, and the walls went chocolate brown. To make dark walls work, Jenni says, create contrast with lights. Midrange tones have their place, too. Tan and gray upholstery, red brick, and some burnished-gold accents (her favorite metallic) provide color and texture in what could otherwise be a stark shell. Remodeling the kitchen on a budget meant working in phases. Jenni started by removing a bank of cabinets over the peninsula and painting dark cabinets light gray (Winter Gates in semigloss by Benjamin Moore). Those DIY projects left room in the budget for biggerticket items like sealed marble countertops and a farmhouse sink.

An area rug can transform a room in the time it takes to unroll it. Our guidelines will help you find the one that fits and avoid shopping snags. Knowing the lingo helps you shop smart. These terms refer to construction methods.
TUFTED Pieces of yarn are punched through a backing then cut to create a smooth surface (called pile). Tufted rugs shed more than others.
HOOKED Though similar to a tufted rug in that loops of yarn are pulled through a backing, the yarn isn’t cut, leaving a looped pile.
KNOTTED Pieces of yarn are tied, often by hand, to warp fibers on a loom. It’s the most labor-intensive way to make a rug.

Wool contains lanolin, a natural stain repellent that makes it one of the easiest fibers to clean.

You have this ocean of beige that’s exhausting to look at.” Opt for tufted rugs—their weighty structure keeps them in place—or rugs with patterns that break up the monotony.

“You always need a rug pad. Rugs wear from the bottom up, so the pad is essential to protecting the fibers from constant abrasion,” Roth says. They also prevent slipping, add cushion, and stop the rug from rippling. Look for one that’s ¹⁄4 inch thick and 2 inches smaller than your rug on each side (so it won’t show).

EYLEA is a prescription medicine that works by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). What is EYLEA used for? When updating the kitchen in her century-old house, this Atlanta homeowner was inspired by what she already had.

creaky old hutch. Windows caked with grime. And barely 200 square feet to work with. Now the once-rickety hutch displays vintage tableware, and Shaker-style cabinetry and narrow-plank flooring look like original features. Even a dingy exterior door was rehabbed and turned into a pocket door for the powder room. Additions, like a pale green island and blue ceramic tile backsplash, pull in colors from Ellen’s collection of ceramic bowls and vintage 1950s Fire-King glassware. “The history of something and the thinking about how many people have used it appeals to me more than the brand-new,” Ellen says. “I wanted something unique.” Stainless-steel appliances modernize the room. Blue-glazed tiles break up the stark white cabinets and metallics, plus add a little texture.

A set of cabinets in Stephanie Abbott’s Houston-area home was in the right spot for a mudroom—at the door to the garage. But with two kids under the age of 5, she needed a better setup for her family’s grab-and-go routine. “At first I was looking at ripping out the existing cabinets to build a mudroom from scratch,” Stephanie says. “Then I realized those cabinets were the perfect starting point.” She removed the doors, drawers, and countertop, then spent three days modifying the cabinet frames and building wooden bins. “I knew this update would have a big impact on our daily lives,” Stephanie says. “Having a place to sit down and to store shoes makes life easier.”

Stephanie cut the base cabinet down to a good bench height: 18 inches tall (with seat). She used a circular saw for the first cuts, a jigsaw to get close to the wall, and a handheld rotary tool for the detail work. A stained wood panel became the seat, which hides supportive bracing. Molding finishes the bench front.

coring a 45-year-old home that has never been updated may not be every homeowner’s ideal. But for interior designer Cecily Mendell, the dated house was pure potential. Plus its location was ideal: 30 miles east of San Francisco in husband Allan’s hometown of Alamo. The mom of three boys and founder of Cecy J Interiors figured she and Allan would start by “ripping up the old carpet and living with it for a bit.” But during a long closing period their longing to finally feel settled in one place grew, so they launched into a nine-month complete renovation, crafting a home where cleanup is easy and skateboarding inside is OK. Every design decision considered the kids, steering the spaces toward low-maintenance and modern. “I wanted to stay true to the country French architecture but infuse the more casual, barefoot California living I love,” Cecily says. In came hardwood floors, spillproof outdoor fabric on furniture, and floor-to-ceiling tile in the bathroom to withstand bath-time splashing. She even put kickplates on interior doors that handle little feet scuing them with a don’t-sweat-it attitude. “Every room is used and loved by the whole family,” Cecily says. “Nothing is of-limits.”

After opening the kitchen to the family room, Cecily flipped the range to the opposite wall and ditched a breakfast nook to make way for a 9-foot island covered in Calacatta marble. It looks fancy but handles even the rowdiest guests—like the dozen kids at the 10th birthday of twins Cash and Graham. Cecily updated most of the exterior with white paint, but she kept the original brick around the front door and added copper gas lamps to play up the country French style.

White furniture—like the living room’s linen couch—might seem counterintuitive in a home with young kids, but it’s actually easier to spot-treat than colors that might bleach or bleed, Cecily says. She pairs the couch with gray chairs upholstered in outdoor fabrics that quickly wipe clean.
Cecily paneled the two-story wall with flat molding for some depth.
The former entry gave the impression that the house was dark and cramped. Cecily annexed an underused sitting area in the master bedroom above so she could vault the foyer, which is now light, airy, and open.

FLOWER FORMS Hardy mums are a diverse group. These are some of the most common shapes you’ll find.

Known for dense, frilly flowers, they lack a visible center spot.

Mums are most often thought of as seasonal potted plants, something to place on the porch to celebrate fall. But once the flowers fade, the plants wind up in the compost bin. Hardy mums like the Igloo varieties and ‘Sheffield Pink’, however, are tough enough to survive winters as far north as Zone 4 and have a loose, romantic growth habit that looks right at home in a planting bed. Put the plants in the ground now, and with

the right care throughout the year, they’ll put on a colorful performance each autumn. Plant in early fall to give roots a chance to establish before the ground freezes. Loosen the soil around their roots with your fingers, and plant in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Water once a week through fall. Let the faded flowers and foliage remain on through winter. (Removing them may stimulate new

Protect plant’s roots from freezing temperatures with a thick layer of straw as mulch around the plant base. Q SPRING

Ground cherries may be the tastiest, easiest-to-grow fruit you’ve never heard of, producing a profusion of sweet yellow orbs through fall.

Pop a ground cherry into your mouth and you might struggle to describe the flavor. It tastes a little like pineapple. Or is it peach? And is that a hint of corn? In any case, this little-known member of the tomato family (husks hint at the relationship to the tomatillo) offers a taste of summer all the way through fall. To grow ground cherries—also known as husk cherries—sow seeds in a warm, sunny spot indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost. Transplant seedlings to a sunny part of the yard that has average garden soil. (Or you can sow seeds outside after the chance of frost has passed.) Mulch with straw, and water weekly if there’s no rain. Fruits ripen on the bushy plants from around August through October. You’ll know they’re ready to eat when they drop to the ground. Peel off the inedible husks, then snack on them fresh or cook them into a quick compote. You might find the fruit at your farmers market, or buy seeds at seedsavers.com.
In a heavy saucepan combine 4 cups fresh ground cherries, husked and washed; zest of half a lemon and juice from 1 lemon; ¹⁄8 tsp. nutmeg; and 1 cup sugar. Split 1 vanilla bean; scrape seeds from the pod into the mixture. Bring to boiling over mediumhigh heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat; simmer 30 minutes. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 1 week. Makes 6 servings. Q

In the meantime, prepare rice according to package instructions. Stir rice into the skillet, sprinkle with cheese and serve.

CRISPY DELICATA RINGS WITH HERBED BUTTERMILK DIP
Baked, not fried. Breaded, not battered. These better-for-you delicata rings rival our favorite onion rings. They’re loaded with vitamin A and only 50 calories per ring.
Also known as peanut squash and sweet potato squash, delicata peaks from late summer to late fall. Choose firm squash that is heavy for its size. Store them in a cool, dark place. Because delicata’s skin is thinner than other winter squash, they won’t last as long. Plan to cook the squash within three to four weeks of purchase. Prepping delicata is simple: Wash, halve or slice, scoop out the seeds, and cook.
Toast the seeds for a snack or as a crunchy topper for soups, salads, and grain bowls. Rinse seeds; pat dry. Spread seeds in a shallow baking pan, sprinkle with ¹⁄8 tsp. each salt and black pepper, and roast at 400°F for 5 to 8 minutes or until toasted, stirring once. MAKE ‘ E M S PI CY

Life’s short, eat dessert fi rst might seem to be Dorie Greenspan’s motto. After all, she has made her name in sweets, publishing many books on baking and contributing more than 100 cookie and dessert recipes to BH&G®. But in her new cookbook, Everyday Dorie: The Way I Cook, she shows off her dinner-making skills, too. While she calls herself “an exceedingly practical cook,” her cookbook is as inventive as it is useful, bringing together supermarket ingredients in unexpected ways. For example, she adds chopped walnuts to meatballs for a bit of crunch and roasts carrots in spices that make them taste as though they’ve been smoked. “I look to get the most flavor out of every ingredient.”

STOP THE WEEPING Liquid forming between the meringue and filling after chilling is one of the top stumbling blocks of making a successful meringue pie. Our Test Kitchen solved it in three steps.

Make the meringue before preparing the pie filling. Our updated meringue recipe, right, includes cornstarch for stability so it won’t lose its volume while the filling cooks.

Spread the meringue onto the HOT filling. This heats (and seals) the underside of the meringue so it cooks as thoroughly as the top, which is exposed to direct heat from the oven.

Cook the meringue to 160°F. When the meringue is fully cooked, its foam structure is set. When undercooked, the egg whites seep out of the foam structure.

At this stage, beaten egg whites curl over and will slip in the bowl when it’s tilted. Adding sugar at the soft peak stage is the key to getting a voluminous meringue. (Adding sugar too late weakens the foam.) Beat in sugar gradually so it dissolves completely.
1. Separate eggs; set aside yolks for pie filling. Place egg whites in a clean glass or copper bowl; let stand until room temperature. S E C R E T Cold eggs separate more cleanly because the yolks are firmer and less likely to break. Room-temp whites are less viscous so they beat into a foam more quickly. Separate first, then let stand to reach room temp. 2. In a 1-cup liquid measure whisk to combine the water and cornstarch. Microwave 45 to 60 seconds or until boiling, stirring once. Set aside. S E C R E T Cornstarch stabilizes the meringue, helps prevent shrinking, lowers the chance of beading—those golden liquid droplets on the surface—and makes for smoother cut edges. 3. Add vanilla and cream of tartar to egg whites. Beat with a mixer on medium 1 minute or until soft peaks form (tips curl). Add sugar 1 Tbsp. at a time, beating on high. Gradually beat in the warm cornstarch mixture until stiff, glossy peaks form (tips stand straight). S E C R E T Cream of tartar is an acid that helps egg whites expand and hold the foam structure.

3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead 10 to 12 strokes or until nearly smooth. Divide in half. Pat or lightly roll each dough half into a 6-inch circle. Cut circles into six wedges. 4. Place wedges 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheet. Brush with additional heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Most weekends, Daniel Buenos, opposite, and Mario Pollan’s restored 1940s barn is the setting for weddings, cooking classes, and other special events. But on this fall evening they’re hosting friends for a casual dinner inspired by Daniel’s native Spain.

‘‘ Paella is a party
says Mario Pollan of the dish that’s a frequent centerpiece of dinners he and his partner, Daniel Buenos, host at their home in Westerlo, NY. “It’s one of those versatile, colorful, anything-goes comfort foods that has minimal prep and no lastminute fussing. The pan goes from stove to table, and everyone helps themselves so we end up feeling like guests rather than hosts.” Actually, hosting comes naturally to these two event planners. They regularly coordinate weddings and private parties at M&D Farm, 58 acres of fields and gardens around their 1800s farmhouse and wisteria-covered barn. Paella, too, comes naturally to Daniel, who grew up in Andalusia (a region of southern Spain), where he says there are as many paellas as there are cooks and most recipes are handed down. His came from his grandmother. But he has tweaked it along the way, so his current version is by no means classic. For example, rather than use the traditional short grain bomba rice, he prefers parboiled rice because it retains its shape as it soaks up the dish’s wine and spice flavors. For an

Spanish wines and spirits are increasingly found on menus and store shelves. These are a few of Mario and Daniel’s favorites. “We love to experiment and show our guests how these beverages enhance the flavors of the foods we serve,” Mario says.
VERMOUTH You may be familiar with vermouth (a fortified wine flavored with botanicals) in cocktails. In Spain, however, vermouth is often sipped as an aperitif. Daniel prefers sweet red vermouth served on ice with soda water and a wedge of lemon as a refreshing drink any time of day. Spanish red vermouths are light, smooth, and slightly sweet. CAVA These bubbles are Spain’s match to French Champagne and Italian Prosecco. Look for brut, the driest form, which has an uncomplicated flavor. “It’s a great chameleon,” Daniel says, “because it goes as well with savory dishes as it does dessert.”
TEMPRANILLO This Spanish red is Mario and Daniel’s house wine. Its strong fruit flavors and aromas complement hearty comfort foods like Daniel’s paella. They say it takes the bite out of cool weather, too.
SHERRY A fortified wine, sherry (Jerez in Spanish) is made from white grapes grown near the city of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia. Its nutty flavors pair well with desserts. “Sip it slowly to appreciate all its subtleties,” Daniel says.

In this case it’s Brussels sprouts, but depending on the season it could be zucchini or asparagus—all of which his grandmother would no doubt find unconventional. When fall sets in and friends gather around a table in the couple’s open-sided barn, Daniel’s paella is the highlight of a relaxed evening stretching over several courses. Daniel and Mario set out a bounty of Spanish-style appetizers—including the traditional potato-omelet tapas dish tortilla Española—on a big round table to encourage mingling. Bowls of pumpkin soup topped with oversize Manchegocrusted croutons signal it’s time to make their way to the dining table. Then Daniel brings out the paella and a crisp radicchio, roasted butternut squash, and fennel salad. Guests top off their glasses with vermouth or a tempranillo and the conversation flows. “In my family, we savored our food while we savored each other’s company,” Daniel says. “We enjoy continuing that custom.” —LINDA O’KEEFFE

Daniel remembers that his mother and grandmother ended meals while he was growing up with a piece of ripe fruit, but he prefers something richer for gatherings, like this raisin bread pudding, left. rian and Kathrin Smirke visited Joshua Tree National Park six years ago on a weekend getaway from their home in Los Angeles and left with a souvenir: a $33,000 derelict cabin. “A squatter had lived there for a year, and the cabin had been foreclosed. There were pipes sticking out of the wall. Windows were broken. The drain lines had rotted out. And it wasn’t

connected to the septic system,” Brian says. The couple wanted to remake the house quickly and creatively for their own use and as a rental property. They set a budget of $45,000 to cover materials, labor, and furnishings and got to work. Brian gutted the house and, with the help of YouTube and manufacturer videos, took on every remodeling project that came up. He even saved wood from the extensive demo to make shelves, lights, the platform bed, plant stands, and anything else they dreamed up. For the decor, Kathrin mapped out a style that merged her preference for eclectic and vintage with Brian’s clean and modern taste. “We balance each other out,” she says. Luckily, their cost-saving sources of Craigslist, Etsy, eBay, thrift stores, budget retailers—even furniture put out on curbs in their Los Angeles neighborhood—suit their style. After 10 months of work the Smirkes could finally vacation at their finished property in the desert and rent it out via Airbnb while they’re away. Now they host 120 adventure-seeking visitors each year. “It makes you happy that all this work you put into saving a house can make other people happy,” Kathrin says. —KATHY BARNES

Each holds a distinct memory, but together they’re the activating force behind Vanessa Cannon and Geof Kelley’s eclectic but quietly elegant home in Athens, GA. Combining diverse collections in a way that feels cohesive is a tricky task. In Vanessa and Geof’s case, it was further complicated by the historical status of their 1930s home. Vanessa liked the small rooms and didn’t want lots of updates to the footprint, but even minor changes afecting the exterior had to go through their local preservation board. There was also the tough-to-access attic: Utilizing this wasted space would mean bigger rooms for their kids, Kai and Samantha. To help navigate the yearlong remodel, Vanessa and Geof looked to local designer Breckyn Alexander. They started by establishing a blank slate with mostly white walls and patching and staining the original hardwood floors to darken them. One of Vanessa’s key requirements was to keep their living spaces casual, so Alexander layered in upholstered furniture to keep everyone comfortable, including a 12-year-old Jack Russell terrier. was one part of Alexander’s strategy for ensuring the collections and artwork star. But by introducing fabric in a mix of solids and prints, the rooms feel warm and lively, not austere. In the living room, for instance, a barrel chair covered in a delicate floral fabric counters a pair of traditional armchairs wearing a bold triangle print. “It’s nice to mix the larger and smaller patterns, to have a combination of prints so that everything isn’t teeny-tiny,” Vanessa says. For texture in the kitchen and office, Alexander called for a limed finish on the wood built-ins and cabinets. The technique lightened and enhanced the wood grain, and introduced an aged patina that’s in keeping with the home’s blend of antiques, art, and uncommon finds from local artisans. “Blending new things with vintage makes the look more authentic,” Vanessa says. “It adds a vein of real life in every room.” —KATHY BARNES October 2018 |

Converted, or parboiled, rice has been soaked, steamed, and dried in the husk to change its starch so it stays firmer and less sticky when cooked, which is ideal for paella. HANDS-ON TIME 20 min. 1. In a 15-inch paella pan,* heat olive oil over medium. Add pork and chicken. Cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a bowl; set aside. Add sweet pepper to pan; cook and stir 2 minutes or until softened. Add garlic, thyme, bay leaf, paprika, and 1 tsp. black pepper; cook and stir 1 minute. Add wine; cook 30 seconds. Add tomato sauce and ¹⁄4 cup water; cook and stir 1 minute. Stir in rice. 2. Add pork, chicken, 4 cups water, the chicken broth, and ¹⁄2 tsp. salt. Bring to boiling. Cook, uncovered, over high 18 minutes or until most of the liquid is evaporated. Add Brussels sprouts. Reduce heat to medium; cook 2 minutes more. Turn off heat. Cover; let stand 5 minutes. Discard bay leaf. To make a crust, aka socarrat, reheat on high, without stirring, 1 to 2 minutes or until edges look dry. Makes 8 servings.

A recent study was done at the University of Kuala Lumpur. On a lightly floured surface, slightly flatten pastry. Roll pastry to form a 12-inch-diameter circle. 3. Fold pastry circle into fourths; transfer to a 9-inch pie plate. Unfold; ease pastry into plate without stretching it. 4. Trim to ½ inch beyond edge of plate. Fold under extra pastry even with the plate’s edge; crimp as desired. 5. Preheat oven to 450°F. Prick bottom and sides of pastry. Line with a double thickness of foil. Bake 8 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 6 to 8 minutes more or until golden. Let cool on a wire rack. No One looks forward to having their breasts squashed between two plates, but it’s worth the hassle. A mammogram is the most reliable test to catch cancer while it’s at a treatable stage. Consider this your guide to starting the discussion with your doctor about what screenings to get and when.
GET RISK ASSESSED AT AGE 30
What that means is talking to your doctor to figure out your risk of developing breast cancer. The goal of doing this check-in at 30 is to catch women who are high risk but don’t know it and to reassure others, says Dana Smetherman, M.D., chair of the American College of Radiology Commission on Breast Imaging. If you’re over 30 and haven’t discussed your potential breast cancer risk factors with your physician or gynecologist, bring it up at your next checkup.

MOST EXPERTS SAY GET A MAMMOGRAM AT 40
Although the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advises women who have an average breast cancer risk to wait until age 50, many groups recommend starting at 40, including the National Cancer Institute and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. (The American Cancer Society says women should definitely start at 45.) “One out of six breast cancers occurs in people in their 40s,” says Laurie Margolies, M.D., system chief of breast imaging at the Dubin Breast Center at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York. The downside is that young women are more prone to false positives, which can lead to unnecessary tests. But every expert we interviewed for this story said they felt the pros of starting at 40 outweighed the cons.

ALL MAMMOGRAMS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
There are two main types: digital (2D) and full-field tomosynthesis (3D). Both allow the radiologist to enlarge the image or change the contrast to see areas more clearly. The 3D method takes pictures in slices, so it has an edge: “It decreases the number of women getting called back [unnecessarily] and increases cancer detection rates slightly,” Margolies says. Insurance might not cover a 3D one (or the co-pay might be higher), although more states are mandating that they be covered. If your breasts are very dense, ask your doctor if 3D is a good way to go.

GETTING CALLED BACK IS NOT UNCOMMON “Please don’t panic, because it probably won’t turn out to be cancer,” Smetherman says. “For every 1,000 women, about 100 will have to come back for additional images,” Smetherman says. “You might have a new cyst—a little sac of fluid—or a dense area.” Calcifications— calcium deposits that are quite common and not necessarily a sign of cancer—might also need a closer look.
The only way to tell is via a mammogram. The letter you get after your mammogram may say, but if it doesn’t, ask your doctor or the technologist at the testing center. There are four categories of density: fatty (not at all dense), scattered fibroglandular density (not dense), heterogeneously dense (fairly dense), and extremely dense. If you do have dense breasts, it can be harder to spot abnormalities on a mammogram, and you have an increased risk of cancer, says Wendie Berg, M.D., Ph.D., professor of radiology at Magee-Womens Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and chief scientific adviser to densebreast-info.org. Having dense breasts can affect how often you get screened and whether you’ll get an ultrasound or MRI along with a mammogram. Berg also notes that density tends to decrease with age.

There’s no official recommendation to do breast self-exams on a schedule. That said, many breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump. So you do want to be aware of what your breasts look and feel like so you can alert your doctor if you notice changes.
BRCA ISN’T THE ONLY GENETIC MUTATION
Although BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most common mutations that may raise your breast cancer risk, there are nine others. “In the past, the cost of genetic testing and our knowledge of other genes’ impact on cancer risk limited our ability to test beyond BRCA1 and 2. Today most clinicians offer testing that includes BRCA1 and 2 as well as other genes,” says Peter Hulick, M.D., director of the Center for Personalized Medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Illinois. You might consider genetic testing if you have a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer. Positive results don’t mean you’ll develop cancer, but you’ll likely need additional screenings.

Scientists are working on developing a contrast-enhanced mammogram. “It’s like an easier MRI. You’re getting a mammogram, but also injecting dye to get a closer look for abnormalities,” Berg says. That makes the test more sensitive than a regular mammogram. And because the technology uses mammogram machines, it would be fairly affordable.
If you’re at a higher risk for breast cancer, you may need one of these screenings (along with a mammogram) that take more detailed images.

ULTRASOUND This uses high-frequency
sound waves to generate an image called a sonogram. Ultrasound is used in addition to mammography in women with dense breast tissue and who are at a high risk for breast cancer but are not candidates for MRI. Q
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) You’ll
be injected with a contrast dye, which highlights cells that may be cancerous, and lie in an enclosed machine for about 30 minutes while images are taken. MRIs can pick up more cancers than a sonogram but tend to be costly and pick up more benign, noncancerous findings than mammograms, which is why an MRI is usually recommended only for women who have a high breast cancer risk. MBI (molecular breast imaging)
You’re injected with a radioactive dye, and images are taken standing up. It can be an option for women who need extra screening but can’t have an MRI. Q

The elastic will loosen over time, so start on the loosest hook. As the band stretches, you can move to the progressively tighter hooks. Q FIT

The right bra has cups that accommodate the shape and orientation of your breasts (not just size), so cup size can vary by style. The cups should hold the sides of your breasts and rest comfortably on them— no digging or gaping. Q FIT

MISTAKE If you’re
tightening the straps every wear, try a smaller band size or different style. A racerback suits a small frame or narrow shoulders. Going strapless? Size down on the band and up in the cup; this helps the cups stay up while giving your bust enough room.
POST BREAST CANCER After a lumpectomy or reconstruction, wear a wireless or sports bra in soft, stretchy fabric. Avoid molded cups and underwire, which can cause irritation as you heal, says breast cancer survivor Caitlin Kiernan, author of Pretty Sick.

Play improves motor skills, stimulates cognitive growth, and is a huge part of cat and dog development, says Alex Johnson, senior designer and animal enrichment specialist with Purina. Aim for 30 minutes twice a day. The close interaction with us during play has been shown to improve overall behavior, especially in dogs. With cats, most people underestimate how playful they are. One toy Johnson loves using with cats is a feather wand. “The wand draws you close to the cat, so you bond and build trust by allowing the cat to catch the

feather.” Engaging with pets when they initiate play is also important, so try not to turn them away when they bring a toy your way.
USE FOOD PUZZLES Thanks to their natural hunting instincts, dogs and cats actually like working for their food, plus it’s mental exercise. “When offered a choice between food that’s provided or that requires effort to eat, animals prefer the latter,” says Kristen Levine, pet lifestyle expert in Tarpon Springs, FL. Try using a food puzzle or treat feeder for dry kibble (like Kong’s Wobbler and Cat Treat Cone). They’re designed so pets can only get the food
by moving objects around or using their problem-solving skills. Even a simple muffin tin can work: Put the kibble in the cups, then cover it with tennis balls so your dog has to remove the balls to eat.
ROTATE THEIR TOYS Rather than having all their toys available all the time, rotate out a few each week to increase the stimulation pets get from them. Or hide a few favorite toys in a room you can close off for a few days, then open it and let your pet rediscover them. Also squeeze in more play by stashing a few “couch potato” toys that you can use while watching TV. Q
