1Measure and cut out a 20x48cm length of paper from a sheet of patterned gift wrap. Score the oblong piece of paper at 2cm intervals along the length, then fold in a concertina style to form pleats.

2Bind the middle of the folded paper with a small piece of thin wire. Snip the ends of the paper into triangles or scallop shapes using scissors.

3Allow the fan to open out, then add a piece of double-sided tape to each ‘end’. Stick a large craft stick to each of the ends to create handles, then tie these together with a piece of string.

1Blow up a balloon and place on a jug. Mix one part flour to two parts water; dip strips of newspaper in this paste. Stick to the balloon to make papier mâché, leaving an opening at the top. Leave to dry overnight, then repeat with two more layers.

2Pop the balloon and remove it. Paint the papier mâché white and let dry. Cut an 8cm circle from the bottom of the owl, then stick three 10cm crepe paper circles to cover the hole. Cut 6cm circles from bright crepe paper and glue to the chest, overlapping like feathers. Glue white crepe paper over the rest of the owl.

3For the eyes, cut two of each diameter: 7cm blue, 5cm white and 2.5cm pink paper circles. Stick on top of each other and top with googly eyes. Add a yellow triangle for the beak and two white paper tufts for ears. Punch holes each side of the head and thread string for hanging. Fill with sweets or little toys.
