This year spring seemed to take forever to get here. (Remember when it was 30 degrees below zero a couple months ago? Hard to forget!) One good thing about enduring frigid temps: These warmer, more light-filled days feel even sweeter. As much as I like to hibernate in winter, lighting a fire and plowing through my DVR queue under thick, woolly throws, I’ve had my fill. Now the sun’s brighter, the long underwear is packed away in plastic bins, and it’s time to shake off the chills and do something. I’m what my friends call “a project person,” and that’s especially true in spring. If I’m not painting something, I’m rearranging, restyling, and occasionally tearing things up. Some of you planted tulip and daffodil bulbs back in fall to behold right about now. Me? I ripped up a bathroom, and now that the reno is almost done, I’ll be choosing the finishing touches this month. (Hello, pretty bath mats on page 33!) Whatever project mode you’re in, I hope the pages ahead inspire you. Ready to totally upgrade your kitchen? Check out page 99. Rather try a 10-minute DIY idea? Flip to page 39. After I decide on a bath mat and new towels, I think I’ll pick out one of the baskets on page 54 and fill it with flip-flops to get a jump-start on summer—it’ll be here before we know it.

“I had these cabinets put into the den of a house that’s over 100 years old and has a lot of original molding, so we didn’t need more wood tones. The homeowner had chosen navy but at the last minute worried it would be too dark. And that’s how we landed on this amazing sapphire blue.” —Robin Titus, R Titus Designs, Chicago, IL

“This space had a clean, timeless look, but it needed a fresh, young vibe, too,” says Denise Davies, a designer in Westport, CT. To jazz up the classic white subway and penny tiles, she went with a dotty green-and-white fabric by Studio Bon for the Roman shade. Also unexpected: a mat with giant palm leaves from Urban Outfitters and dip-dyed Serena & Lily stools that can double as plant stands.

This paint makes a Silly String pattern to create a marbled effect. Practice on poster board first.
glossy side table 1. Remove the drawer from a side table (ours is a vintage find). Remove the drawer pull and set aside. Sand the table and the drawer front, then tape off the sides and the interior of the drawer. Spray the table and the drawer front with primer. Let dry.
A couple coats of this stuff rivals a pro finish.
3. Spray-paint the drawer pull a different color. Let dry. Replace the drawer pull. SPRAY PAINT Gloss Spring Green and Gloss White, both by Rust-Oleum
STUART TYSON/STUDIO D
2. Spray-paint the table and the drawer front with two coats, checking the instructions on the can for how long to wait in between. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry.
This highpressure spray paint goes on fast, so it’s less likely to drip.
A super-glossy furniture lacquer makes the handles look enameled.
copper pendant 1. This fixture comes unassembled. (If you’re using one that’s already put together, tape off the cord.) Spray-paint the inside of the shade. Let dry. Turn the shade over and spray the outside. Let dry. Assemble the light.

1. Wash utensils (ours are vintage finds) with soap and water. Wipe dry. 2. Tape off the top of each utensil with electrical tape—it’s more pliable than painter’s tape and will better cover any designs. 3. Spray-paint each utensil a different color, starting with one side. Let dry. Turn utensils over and spray the other side. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry. SPRAY PAINT Easton Green, Seaside, and Eggplant, all by Amy Howard at Home

colorblocked chair 1. This project is easiest when the chair legs can be removed (our chair came unassembled). Spray-paint the legs with two coats, checking the instructions on the can for how long to wait in between. Let dry. 2. Cover the seat and half of the seat’s back with a trash bag and secure with painter’s tape, following the V-shape lines of the chair. Spray-paint the top with two coats. splattered pillow 1. Iron a pillow cover to remove any wrinkles. Place a piece of cardboard inside to create an even work surface. 2. To achieve this pattern, wear latex gloves and hold the spray paint in your dominant hand. To apply it, partially cover the nozzle with the index finger of your other hand so paint comes out drippy, and spray back and forth across the pillow. Start with the lightest shade at the top and spray slightly more than a third of the way down. Repeat for the next third with a darker color, overlapping the sections to create an ombré look.
A matte finish looks great on fabric.
3. Repeat with the darkest color at the bottom. Let dry. PILLOW COVER 20" x 20" cotton pillow cover in white, $45, Thalassa Blue RV-157, mypillowstudio.etsy.com SPRAY PAINT Argo Blue RV-150, and Dark Blue RV-5005, all by MTN 94

Paint the tabletop the color you want the design to be (red for the left one, yellow for the right). Let dry. 2. Use 1-inch-wide delicate-surface painter’s tape to create the stripe pattern or the starburst one, as shown. Spray-paint the top and sides of the tabletop with a contrasting color. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet, using tweezers so your fingers don’t touch the wet paint. Let dry. Assemble the table. good question
Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions. NOT BAD AT ALL!
PLATE: GETTY IMAGES; FORKS, CAKE: JEFFREY WESTBROOK/STUDIO D
how bad is it to share dessert with friends? Fun? Yes. A little risky? Yep. (Sorry!) “While most people wouldn’t split dessert with someone who’s coughing or sneezing, there’s no way to know if a person is about to come down with a cold or a stomach bug, which their fork or spoon could spread,” says Donald W. Schaffner, Ph.D., a food microbiologist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. If you want cake or pie on girls’ night out, hold the germs by asking the kitchen to divvy up a portion. Schaffner’s a fan of the no-man’s-land move— each diner takes bites from their side and leaves the middle alone. But sometimes even he can’t resist: “I’ve ventured into no-man’s-land,” he says, “when the dessert is that good.”
KINDA BAD! WRITTEN BY JULIANNE PEPITONE
good question
Hey, when does the buffet open, anyway?
how bad is it to forget to feed your fish for a couple days? Your little swimmers should be fine. “Goldfish are pretty adaptable and can tolerate three to four days without food,” says Jessie Sanders, D.V.M., a fish veterinarian based in Santa Cruz, CA. Tropical varieties like angelfish and neon tetras can survive only up to two days sans eating, however, because the warmer water in their heated tanks increases their metabolism and their need for nourishment. To avoid missed feedings, sprinkle in fish food around the same time daily. “An easy way to remember is to link it to your own mealtimes,” says Sanders. “Head to the tank before or after breakfast or dinner.”
NOT SO BAD!
Try to resist, as tempting as it may be. When you pick off polish, you’re also removing the top layer of the nail. Keep up the habit and yours could become brittle and prone to breakage, says Jenna Hipp, a Los Angeles– based celeb nail stylist. “Gel manicures are especially bad to pick—that can create air pockets, which could hold water and bacteria and lead to an infection.” If you’re looking to neaten up before, say, a work meeting, lightly slough off any remaining color with an emery board (then rub in a bit of hand lotion for sheen). If you’re at home and out of polish remover, apply a clear topcoat—it helps soften the existing layers of polish so they can rub off—and immediately wipe clean with a dry paper towel.

Skip it to spare your vacuum the trauma. The jagged edges could wreck the rolling brush, or clog or slice up the hose. “You definitely want to sweep away or pick up chunks that are larger than a dime or thicker than a pencil,” says Weston Adams, general manager at Leonard Brush & Chemical, a repair company in Louisville, KY. For any remaining smaller pieces, grab them with a wet paper towel. “Then vacuum up the glass dust that’s left behind, because it won’t hurt anything,” says Adams. Afterward, wipe down the vacuum head with a damp cloth to remove tiny shards that could scratch up hardwood floors.
REALLY BAD!
how bad is it to let your passport expire? It’s not a disaster, as long as you don’t have aging parents or adult children overseas whom you might need to get to in an emergency. Just avoid letting it lapse for too long. “If you don’t renew your passport within five years of its expiration date, you have to start the whole process again with all the documentation,” says Julie Lichtblau, a director at rushmypassport.com. Planning a trip to another country? Keep in mind that some require passports to have three to six months of validity to visit. If you do get crunched, your least expensive option is paying the $60 government fee for expedited service, on top of the usual $110 processing fee. Companies like Lichtblau’s and passportcenter.com will hand-deliver your application and update you on your status—but you’ll pay $90 and up for processing within a few weeks, and as much as $500 extra for a 24-hour turnaround.

You won’t find anything cookie-cutter in this Nashville, TN, home.
ENTRYWAY Although the house was built in 2016, shiplap-style walls throughout the first floor give it aged farmhouse cred. The decor is traditional with a twist, hinting at the rest of the home: a Louis XV chair re-covered in a poppy coral fabric from Brentwood Interiors, a modern raffia console from Serena & Lily, and a graphic flat-weave rug from overstock.com.

Cullen and Kerry with Flynn, 4, and twins Millie and Caroline, 2
here are plenty of perks to buying a brand-new house—you’re the first to make memories in it, use the appliances, and enjoy the flawless walls (well, until they get scuffed up). The one pitfall: New-construction houses can sometimes lack character. That’s why Kerry and Cullen Roberts felt like they lucked out when they found a 3,800-square-foot spec home in Nashville, TN, with plenty to love right from the getgo. It had built-ins in the living room, big windows, shiplap-inspired walls, pretty fixtures, and a dramatic tray ceiling in the master bedroom. Still, everything was seriously neutral. To take it from spec to spectacular, the couple hired designer Gen Sohr, who’s known for mixing patterns and bright hues. Starting with coral and navy, Kerry’s favorites, they played up the house’s unique features to make it extra eye-catching. “It’s bold and pretty—but most of all, it’s fun,” says Kerry. With every room personalized for their family, it’s as if the house were built just for them.
The couple didn’t touch the exterior—they were drawn to its large windows and charming shutters and dormers.
house tours LIVING ROOM A plain area morphed into one chock-full of floral, geometric, and striped patterns—and it works because they’re all in coordinating colors. The sofa from Serena & Lily and the rug from rugsusa.com have blue and white, the pillows and the side chair add coral, and the fabric on the window shade from Schumacher includes all those hues and more. It’s an inviting spot for Kerry and Cullen to wind down at the end of the day, and for the kids to watch old episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

LIVING ROOM To make a style statement that complemented the walls, the couple hung art (by Gen’s company, Pencil & Paper Co., sold on onekingslane.com) with rectangles that play off the horizontal paneling. It’s one of Kerry’s favorite parts of the house. And the colors pick up the ones in the sofa fabric and pillows. Brilliant! The coffee table, from Nadeau, has raised detailing that looks great with the rug.
DINING ROOM Nicknamed the Blue Room by Flynn, this space off the kitchen saw one of the biggest transformations. To make it welcoming and energetic—a spot where the kids would really want to eat dinner—designer Gen created a built-in banquette, added wallpaper by Baker Lifestyle, and painted the trim navy (Commodore by SherwinWilliams). The glam pendant is by Serena & Lily. “I like how its large size grounds the room,” says Kerry.
HGTV Magazine 69
KITCHEN The space was dreamy from the start with Shakerstyle cabinets, wood floors, and pendants that have brass-toned cages. To bring it up to the Roberts’ colorloving speed, in came red-and-white stools by Serena & Lily and window shades that match the ones in the living room. Says Kerry, “We were surprised at how different it looked with just a few additions!”

MASTER BEDROOM This room is all about the woodtrimmed tray ceiling, which is accentuated by a cool Circa Lighting pendant. Although Kerry and designer Gen infused color everywhere else in the house, Kerry wanted the bedroom to be a soothing, neutral retreat. Shades of blue and white did the trick, but it’s not a yawn thanks to brushstroke lamps by Bunny Williams Home and a cushy daybed from onekingslane.com.

BATHROOM Guests are always wowed when they walk in— that coral trellis wallpaper by Quadrille does not hold back. The vanity is painted to match (try Emotional by Sherwin-Williams), and the mirror from Ballard Designs, with its ruffled frame, is inspired by sea coral—a quirky play off the room’s main hue.

FLYNN’S ROOM
CAROLINE + MILLIE’S BEDROOM It’s both sweet and spunky, not unlike the girls. Floral fabric from Quadrille on the shade inspired the pink-andorange color scheme, rounded out by a herringbone rug from rugsusa.com and a chaise from onekingslane.com. The twins’ idea of a good time: exploring the dollhouse and cruising on the wheeled giraffes, both from Pottery Barn Kids.

Funky slanted ceilings give the room a playhouse effect, and they get even more amped up with stripes (try Rhythmic Blue by Sherwin-Williams) and a geometric rug from rugsusa .com. Flynn can often be found at the round table from overstock.com, where trains, dinosaurs, and a barn are in constant rotation. The desk is from onekingslane.com, and the chair is from Serena & Lily. “We picked furniture that will grow with him,” says Kerry. “Someday he’ll do his homework at that desk.”

living room Originally the living space in the Fisher family’s house was only 8 feet tall—not so impressive. Vaulting it to 12 feet and hanging long striped curtains created tons more presence. Large lantern-style pendants from circalighting .com emphasize the height. For coziness, double sofas flush with bright pillows and a pattern-happy armchair surround a wood coffee table by Sarreid Ltd. The fringe-wrapped table lamps are by Arteriors Home.

A graphite gray exterior (Mt. Rushmore) and a blue door (Lily Pond Blue, both by Kelly-Moore): nice combo!
or years Mandy and Andrew Fisher lived in a traditional two-story house in Portland, OR, with plenty of room for them and their three kids. But when they relocated to Lafayette, CA, they discovered that twofloor homes in the Bay Area were few and far between. No problem: “We liked the idea of everyone being together on one level,” says Mandy. “We just didn’t want to be crashing into one another!” They settled on a barely updated 1965 ranch house, with big visions for it. First up: blowing out its 2,100 square feet to 3,100. They also created an open common area and raised the low ceilings in the living room, dining room, and master bedroom. Designer Jeffrey Neve made sure the home’s style was as impressive as the expanded floor plan he helped with. He kept the walls neutral, then brought in sophisticated-yetsimple furniture, revved up accessories, and distinctive lighting. Now their place feels like it’s just the right size, with all the right stuff—even with the addition of two dogs. Says Mandy, “It’s gorgeous and spacious, and we’ve never once missed having a second floor.” 80 HGTV Magazine
kitchen Shaker-style cabinets painted white (Swiss Coffee by Kelly-Moore) and gray-veined Silestone quartz countertops are timeless, while the graphic terra-cotta tile backsplash by Tabarka Studio is a standout. “The black-andwhite palette makes the pattern not so busy,” says Mandy. Turned legs and an espresso stain give the island—home to 7-year-old Vivian’s Play-Doh marathons—the look of freestanding furniture. The stools are from Arteriors Home.

dining room
A grand ceiling calls for a glorious fireplace. The Fishers had the original brick one re-covered in stone veneer; the mantel is made from an old fence that was on the property. “It’s important to us to keep the spirit of the home alive,” says Mandy. She loves how the clear chairs by Zuo that surround the table play off the glass chandelier by Robert Abbey. A lively teal rug from Uttermost (almost) steals the show. 82 HGTV Magazine
bar area
Tucked between the kitchen and the dining room lies this posh bar setup, an Andrew request. “I told him, ‘This is your 5 feet, but that’s all you get!’” Mandy jokes. He does share a little—the fridge holds seltzers and other kid-friendly pours. The cabinets, in the same finish as the island, have brass hardware by Manzoni. For vintage flair, designer Jeffrey added a mottled mirror backsplash and a display of old liquor bottles.
wall color Fine Grain by Dunn-Edwards
master bedroom Curvy blue lamps, a linen-upholstered bed frame from Stanley Furniture, and a teal leatherupholstered bench from overstock.com glam it up—yet Mandy also wanted a laidback vibe that said, “Let’s all get in bed and watch a movie.” (It’s a Sunday-night family tradition.) That’s why she went with mismatched but compatible nightstands; the 100-year-old table on the right belonged to Andrew’s grandma. The cozy bedding is from Pottery Barn.
bathroom
“There’s no window in here, so we added a large mirror, though this space still needed excitement,” says Mandy. That explains the bold geometric wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries and a light fixture from Crystorama that brings the ooh la la overhead. A dark wood vanity with a traditional-style bronze faucet balances them out.

The way to win a lavender-loving 7-year-old’s heart: with a sweet shade on the walls and lilac dotted curtains from PBteen. The trundle bed from Stanley Furniture is practically made for sleepovers…or reading The Baby-sitters Club books at bedtime. For even more pretty power, Mandy chose a delicate floral-inspired capiz shell light from Pottery Barn.

for a stylish drop spot that didn’t seem the least bit like a dumping ground, Mandy painted the door black (Black Bay by Dunn-Edwards) and the built-ins white. Wire baskets hold sports equipment and doggy gear. The bar-height desk is equally comfy for sitting or standing, though, says Mandy, “with three kids, I’m never there long enough to sit down!”

front yard “From the start we knew we’d want to spend a lot of time on the front patio,” says Mandy. Most weekends she and Andrew chill around the firepit and watch the kids bike and ride scooters on their street. The wood trellis they added offers shade on sunny days; a bench from Design Within Reach makes room for visitors.
Our patio is super social. When we’re here, someone always stops by to say hi. —Mandy

rin and Creighton Barrett are one of the hipper couples on the planet—she’s a textile designer, and he’s the drummer for Band of Horses. (Also: They named their kids Bowie, as in David, and Sunny.) So the dated kitchen in the 1979 ranch they bought in Charleston, SC, wasn’t exactly a match. “The finishes made it look like the set of an old sitcom,” says Erin. It also felt dark and cramped, thanks to a layout that closed it off from the living area. When the two finally worked up the energy and the budget for a redo, they decided to go Scandinavian— an airy white style Erin had admired on Pinterest—with a family-friendly edge. They broke down a wall and put in a breakfast bar, traded the washed-out salmon shade of the cabinets for contemporary maple, and created a space all their own. “Before, whenever visitors came into the kitchen while I was cooking, it was like, Aah, why are you in here?! ” says Erin. “Now we love showing it off.”
floors While the rest of the house has light engineered wood, Erin went with distinctive porcelain flooring here. She chose 12-inch-by-24-inch tiles from Melcer Tile in North Charleston in a pretty matte gray. The rug is from Rejuvenation.

lighting
A pair of pleated ceramic pendants from Cedar & Moss are retro fab, a nod to the house’s ’70s roots. “The texture makes them special,” says Erin, “but they’re not overpowering anything else.”
counters “When we had that greenand-pink granite, it always seemed dingy and dirty,” says Erin. She chose white Silestone quartz that’s super sleek and crazy clean. “Now the counters sparkle, even when the kids make a mess!” she says.
in the kitchen
open shelves Two-inch-thick Iroko wood shelves hold adult dishes; the kids’ stuff is in the cabinets, at kid-friendly height. Erin wanted a modern backsplash to offset any farmhouse vibes. She had large subway tiles (4 inches by 12 inches) stacked instead of doing a brick-lay pattern.
island color Ebony Field by Valspar
peninsula Shiplap painted nearly black on a breakfast bar is both practical (it hides shoe scuffs) and striking (oh, the drama). Maple-toned swivel stools from allmodern.com stand out against the paneling, and they match the island and the lower cabinets.
pantry wall
Erin sometimes grows herbs here.
The sliding glass doors that used to be here led to an office space, added by the previous homeowner. The couple turned the wall into a giant open pantry. “The knotty pine plywood was a last-minute decision, to give a little warmth and keep things interesting,” says Erin.
before breakfast nook A great recipe for a fave family spot: Take one light-filled area and add a mod table (from IKEA), earthy rattan chairs (from World Market), and a fun rug (from Gus Modern). Sunny and Bowie enjoy drawing portraits of the family’s cat and two dogs on the wall-mounted roll of butcher paper. All those open shelves make meal planning easy. “I can sit at the table and see exactly what we have in our pantry,” Erin says.
before
in the kitchen cooktop Before, the stove had barely any prep space nearby. Installing a cooktop in the island left plenty of room for making the vegan donuts the kids are obsessed with. For a bit of quirk, a pro sprayed the range hood with a high-heat enamel paint in soft mint green.
cabinets The quote the Barretts got for new cabinets was more than half of their reno budget. No thanks! New flat-front maple doors for the existing cabinet boxes worked just as well. “I like how the shine in the brass pulls bounces off the dazzling white tile and ovens,” Erin says. ®
If you are wanting a new look in your kitchen, but money and down-time are a concern, N-Hance may be just what you need. N-Hance can change the look of your kitchen by refinishing your cabinets to any color you desire...perhaps a classic espresso, a fresh white or a trendy gray. You can choose any color! N-Hance’s process and products provide a high quality, durable finish that is cured instantly using ultraviolet light. You get fresh, updated cabinets in a matter of days...not weeks! *Financing may be available.
Key Benefits 1. N-Hance products are designed specifically for cabinets, not walls. 2. Your cabinets will be given a finish that is much higher quality and durability than just painting your cabinets. 3. Color options are endless! Pick any color, we will match it.
