Today - as i am writing this editorial - Greece is celebrating. October 28th 2013. In previous years (and there have been many) New York was choking me. I wanted to be in Greece, display the Greek flag on my balcony, go join the parade, watch historical shows and documentaries on TV. I wanted to feel that my country remembers… Today I feel different. I am celebrating the October 28th anniversary more than I ever have. To spite all those who made it their goal to destroy our nation. And I am not referring to the foreign powers - that favorite buzzword - we do not need the foreigners - we can “poke our own eyes out”! I am speaking of the political figures of the last ten years who we allowed to criminally rape the principles and values of our country. Who took everything that make us different as nation and dumped it in the mud and garbage. Those who rape the dignity of the Hellenic - daily, demanding that the citizens bare themselves willingly in front of their rapist. Those who managed to make us forget so easily, our memory is not a characteristic element of us any more. Those who erased from our historical substance all the glory of our nation. All those who we stupidly watch on our TV screens as they are leading us into the fire and we are totally desensitized. Those who WE chose to govern us, by gambling our ballot, or because that’s how our parents did it, as if voting is hereditary diabetes! I celebrate our National anniversary today because I can see - online - the eyes of the youth parading, the children who without party affiliations and political infection only seek the obvious. Their country unwounded, without traitors and the bribed. Those children who may elect with their ballot the right Hellenes to govern. Those children I celebrate today, from here, the other end of the world, feeling bitter that I as well as all the other individuals of our generation have done nothing….

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is demanding an "immediate" Obama on a spying program. her mobile phone, her spokesman said. Merkel said this would be according to a statement issued by the German leader’s spokesman,
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama had "assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor." Â However, the strongly worded statement by Merkel's spokesman suggested that Germany was not fully satisfied. It demanded an "immediate and comprehensive" clarification of U.S. surveillance practices. Merkel "made clear that she views such practices, if proven true, as completely unacceptable and condemns them unequivocally," the statement read.
"Between close friends and partners, as Germany and the U.S. have been for decades, there should not be such monitoring of the communications of a government leader. This would be a serious breach of trust. Such practices should be immediately stopped." The news broke as Secretary of State John Kerry, on a visit to Rome, faced fresh questions about spying on European allies, based on revelations from Edward Snowden, the fugitive ex-U.S. intelligence operative granted asylum in Russia. The German government said it
cont responded after receiving "information that the chancellor's cell phone may be monitored" by U.S. intelligence. It would not elaborate, but the German news magazine Der Spiegel, which has published material from National Security Agency leaker Snowden, said its research triggered the response. Global anger over US spying In Italy, major newspapers recently reported that a parliamentary committee was told the U.S. had intercepted Italians’ phone calls, emails and text messages. Prime Minister Enrico Letta raised the topic of spying during a visit Wednesday with Kerry. A senior State Department official said Kerry made it clear that the Obama administration's goal was to strike the right balance between security needs and privacy expectations. French President Francois Hollande is pressing for the U.S. spying issue to be put on the agenda of a summit of European leaders that starts Thursday. The French newspaper Le Monde reported earlier this week that the NSA had collected tens of thousands of French phone records.
Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade called on the U.S. on Tuesday to widen an investigation into spying to include allegations that the NSA had hacked former President Felipe Calderon's public email account. Few countries have responded as angrily to U.S. spying as Brazil. President Dilma Rousseff took the extremely rare diplomatic step of canceling a visit to Washington, where she had been scheduled to receive a full state dinner this week. Just four months ago, Obama defended U.S. security tactics on a visit to Berlin, telling Germans at a news conference with Merkel that Washington was not spying on ordinary citizens. Revelations before the trip of a covert U.S. Internet surveillance program, code-named Prism, caused outrage in a country where memories of the eavesdropping Stasi secret police in the former East Germany are still fresh. In the second televised debate, the two candidates for New York City mayor again attacked each other’s ideologies and parties, including the mayor’s they had once served under.
By Mara Gay AND Erin Durkin / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota took a ride in a time machine as they tore into each other in a bitter debate Tuesday night. They repeatedly reached back decades into the city’s past as they battled over crime, campaign tactics and even the performances of former Mayors David Dinkins and Rudy Giuliani. As in their first debate, de Blasio tried to tie Lhota to national Republicans, the Tea Party and to Giuliani.
But unlike his mild performance last week, Lhota gave as good as he got The angriest exchanges occurred over Lhota’s attack ad that uses images of the crime-ridden 1970s and ’80s in arguing that de Blasio will take the city back to an era of fear and violence. He left the Republican Party in 2001 and successfully campaigned to extend the city’s term limits law so that he could run for a third term. He was re-elected as an Independent on the Republican and Independence/Jobs & Education ballot lines in 2009. The term limits law was subsequently changed by a referendum in 2010, reverting the limit to two terms.

Ramiz Jaraisi has been the mayor of this bustling Arab city in northern Israel for nearly 20 years. For 20 years before that, he served as deputy mayor. The local party slate he heads, the Nazareth Democratic Front, a coalition of the Communist Party and other groups, has been running the city since 1975.
THE WORLD
Mr. Jaraisi, 61, greets visitors to City Hall in a conference room lined with glass cases displaying glass from the Roman and Byzantine era, Umayyad period coins and Mameluke ceramic bowls. On the wall outside are framed photographs of previous mayors of Nazareth going back to 1875, all male, many of them with mustaches and wearing Turkish-style fez hats. “This is one of the most well-known cities in the world, the place where Christianity start-
with the votes of both Muslims and Christians, he is quick to point out. Now, in the municipal elections scheduled for Israel’s local authorities on Tuesday, he is facing a serious challenge. Ali Salam, Mr. Jaraisi’s former deputy, is one of four candidates running against him. Another strong contender is Haneen Zoabi, 44, a
There is a lot to be said for tradition and continuity in a city revered by Christians as the childhood home of Jesus. Though the city’s population of 80,000 is now about 70 percent Muslim, much of the economy of Nazareth, considered the capital of Israel’s Arab minority, depends on the tourism generated by its Christian past.
Israeli Parliament representing Balad, an Arab national party. Known as one of Israel’s feistiest Arab politicians, Ms. Zoabi gained widespread notoriety in Israel for being on board the Mavi Marmara, the Turkish ship that was raided by Israel as it tried to breach the naval blockade of Gaza in 2010. Nine activists were killed as Israeli commandos met with violent resistance as they landed on the deck. Israeli right-wingers have since tried to get Ms. Zoabi thrown out of Parliament.
ed,” said Mr. Jaraisi, a Christian, whose hair and mustache have turned white on the job. But others in Nazareth say it is time for change. Mr. Jaraisi has been elected mayor four times,
has helped her by showing her constituents that she acts on her beliefs and not according to political calculations.

“I would do the same with the municishe said in a recent meeting with reporters at her party headquarters here, where the wall decorations include a photocopy of the masked image that represents Anonymous, the shadowy international computer hacking network. “I represent another generation, a younger generation,” she added. “I think it is a phenomenon in the Arab world.” Municipal elections are mostly dull affairs in Israel, but this time, a few of the races are gaining national attention. In Jerusalem, the incumbent, Nir Barkat, a secular rightist who has increased cultural activities and attracted numerous international events to West Jerusalem in the past few years, is being challenged by Moshe Lion, a former civil servant who recently moved to the city from a Tel Aviv suburb. Mr. Lion was recruited to run by Avigdor Lieberman of the ultranationalist party Yisrael Beiteinu, with the backing of the ultra-Orthodox Sephardi Shas Party. That race and another, in Elad, an ultraOrthodox town in central Israel, are seen
as a test of Shas’s strength after the death of its spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, this month. In Tel Aviv, an openly gay lawmaker from the leftist Meretz Party, Nitzan Horowitz, is running against the incumbent, Ron Huldai, and in Beit Shemesh, a town troubled by social tensions and struggles over religious extremism, the ultra-Orthodox incumbent is being challenged by a moderate candidate. In Nazareth, which is dominated by the Church of the Annunciation and is rich in other Christian pilgrimage sites, the argument is about modernizing the city’s services and cultural offerings. One of the challenges that Mr. Jaraisi is facing is what Wadie Abu Nassar, an Arab Israeli political analyst, calls “the Arab Spring argument — that it is time to change.” Another is an accusation of mismanagement, Mr. Abu Nassar said. Mr. Jaraisi is hoping to draw at least 40 round. If not, Mr. Abu Nassar said, he might face an alliance of opponents in a runoff.

It usually takes a few months in office before the bloom comes off the rose but in this new sped-up world of politics, it's already happening to Bill de Blasio – even before Election Day.
is continuing today – with just a single radio interview on his public schedule. Election Day can't come soon enough for the Democrat who is consistently leading by more than 40 points in the polls.
In a must-read article by Michael Grynbaum and David Chen in today's New York Times, they report: "In the transition from his role as insurgent candidate to the posture of a likely mayor-to-be, Mr. de Blasio, a Democrat, is sounding more guarded, more careful and, at times, even a bit mushy."
It's also not heartening for good-government and transparency advocates to see de Blasio shut out the press from his million-dollar fundraiser with Hillary Clinton on Wednesday. Who are his big donors? Who wants access to the big frontrunner in the polls? It's a fair question that went unanswered.
From ducking a question about pedestrian plazas to sounding less critical of stop-and-frisk to being positively Orwellian on taxi issues, de Blasio triangulated his way through his second debate with Joe Lhota on Tuesday. While that's often how governing works, it's interesting to see someone still on the campaign trail dial things back; we didn't even hear his "Tale of Two Cities" until the debate was almost over. Meanwhile, de Blasio's Rose Garden campaign strategy
While all of this caution is tactically understandable, it's hopefully not the way de Blasio will govern if he becomes the next mayor. No one gets anywhere leading the city unless they're bold. And de Blasio's general election campaign has been anything but courageous since he won the nomination. He has a dozen days left to inspire New Yorkers before they head to the polls. "Sit on the ball" shouldn't be anyone's campaign mantra.

9/11 MEMORIAL WELCOMES MORE THAN 10 MILLION VISITORS The National September 11 Memorial & Museum announced today that more than 10 million visitors have come to the 9/11 Memorial since opening on the 10-year anniversary of the attacks. Visitors have traveled from all 50 states and countries from around the world. The nations represented range from Ireland and Japan to Nepal and Malta. The Memorial has now welcomed 10.5 million people, and visitation is expected to exceed 5 million in 2013 alone. "This is a place of historic importance. Reaching this milestone of 10 million visitors illustrates how the world embraces the Memorial," 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said. "The numbers show that people continue to want to pay their respects and honor those killed in the 9/11 attacks at the sacred site of the Memorial." The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.
ABOUT THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is the not-for-profit corporation created to oversee the design, fundraising, programming, and operations of the Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. The Memorial and Museum are located on eight of the 16 acres of the World Trade Center site. The Memorial was dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and is now open to the public. The Memorial remembers and honors the 2,983 people who were killed in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The design, created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, consists of two reflecting pools formed in the footprints of the original Twin Towers and a plaza of trees. The Museum will display monumental artifacts linked to the events of 9/11, while presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning, and recovery that are central to telling the story of the 2001 and 1993 attacks and the aftermath. It will communicate key messages that embrace both the specificity and the universal implications of the events of 9/11; document the impact of those events on individual lives, as well as on local, national, and international communities; and explore the continuing significance of these events for our global community. The Memorial’s Millions of Visitors Have Come From Around the World Since Opening in September 2011

Caution: Holidays are coming!
By Athina Krikeli Ellopia Press - Holiday season is approaching again. How do you think it’s going to affect us this year with so much instability around the world and especially in the US?

Maria Papapetros “This could be a very tricky period for many. As the long - anticipated season approaches, we get sentimental, our emotional state heightens, and the awareness of lack of so many things in our lives slowly creeps in. November first comes, and we think of turkey staffing, pumpkin pie, misled toe and jingo bells. We get in touch with all we have not dealt with all year, and have placed in the “think of it tomorrow box”. For example: Whom we would like to be with and can’t, whom we want to buy gifts for and can’t afford to do, and missing loved ones that have passed on. The sense of aloneness hits hard then.. We want to share the Holidays with someone, so we start inviting friends, that probably we have not seen in months, “I have made other plans thanks, sorry”, they say. We begin feeling our feelings and emotions; there is no more room in our mental “box” it is so full, one more entry and its going to burst Ellopia Press: Is there anything to be done to prevent this this? Yes try and make everyday a holiday! Don’t wait just for Christmas, New Years and Thanks Giving. What does holiday mean? Taking a break, decompressing, doing nothing, just being with one’s self. Can we think that this period is Holly, and I don’t mean just going to church or the Temple? There is more to it than just having fun. Make time to go to a place of Worship to pray and meditate. Most of all choose times to just seat quietly somewhere and get in touch with what is holly within you. Honor your own Temple. Take accounting of the wonderful things you do have in your lives, your willingness to give and forgive. With your hand on your heart express GRATITUDE to all and watch miracles happen!

Yes! Write your affirmations with positive expectancy, and read them to your selves weekly. Send at least ten Holiday cards to people you know, who would be completely surprised with your gesture. Sent a loving thought to the needy, feel love deep in your heart and join the stream of Holiday spirit. Feel the planet being uplifted Let’s write our goals now as we do New Years Eve. We say “my resolutions for this year” So we write the resolutions, we put them in the drawer and never read them again, and then expect them to materialize on their own. Just writing them is not going to do it. Your resolutions need nurturing, meditation, faith, visualization, and many repetitions of the above. In order to change our reality we need to change the way we think and the way we see the world. We need to let go of the past and not see ourselves as victims. Think positive and always see the glass half full, not half empty. When situations occur not to our liking, instead of crying “why me God”, face them and ask: What this is telling me? Could I have done this or that differently? What is the lesson here for me? Use positive affirmations such as: I am now attracting ideal friendships, compatible relationships, ideal mate, work, career and so forth. I am economically healthy. Money circulates in my life freely. Let’s pray during this holiday season that we are prosperous on all levels. Wealth is our birthright. There is an endless source of supply of abundance of all there is in the universe that is available to us at wish! All we need to do is use that amazing faculty that we own. Our mind.

NSA monitored calls of 35world leaders
By James Ball , Τhe Guardian t "HFODZ HJWFO NPSF UIBO OVNCFST CZ HPWFSONFOU official t /4" FODPVSBHFT EFQBSUNFOUT UP TIBSF UIFJS h3PMPEFYFTh t 4VSWFJMMBODF QSPEVDFE hMJUUMF JOUFMMJHFODFh NFNP BDknowledges The NSA memo suggests that such surveillance was not isolated as the agency routinely monitors world leaders. Photograph: Guardian The National Security Agency monitored the phone conversations of 35 world leaders after being given the numbers by an official in another US government department, according to a classified document provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The confidential memo reveals that the NSA encourages senior officials in its "customer" departments, such as the White House, State and the Pentagon, to share their "Rolodexes" so the agency can add the phone numbers of leading foreign politicians to their surveillance systems. The document notes that one unnamed US official handed over 200 numbers, including those of the 35 world leaders, none of whom is named. These were immediately "tasked" for monitoring by the NSA. The revelation is set to add to mounting diplomatic tensions between the US and its allies, after the German chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday accused the US of tapping her mobile phone. After Merkel's allegations became public, White House press secretary Jay Carney issued a statement that said
the US "is not monitoring and will not monitor" the German chancellor's communications. But that failed to quell the row, as officials in Berlin quickly pointed out that the US did not deny monitoring the phone in the past. Arriving in Brussels for an EU summit Merkel accused the US of a breach of trust. "We need to have trust in our allies and partners, and this must now be established once again. I repeat that spying among friends is not at all acceptable against anyone, and that goes for every citizen in Germany." The NSA memo obtained by the Guardian suggests that such surveillance was not isolated, as the agency routinely monitors the phone numbers of world leaders – and even asks for the assistance of other US officials to do so. The memo, dated October 2006 and which was issued to staff in the agency's Signals Intelligence Directorate (SID), was titled "Customers Can Help SID Obtain Targetable Phone Numbers". It begins by setting out an example of how US officials who mixed with world leaders and politicians could help agency surveillance. "In one recent case," the memo notes, "a US official provided NSA with 200 phone numbers to 35 world leaders … Despite the fact that the majority is probably available via open source, the PCs [intelligence production centers] have noted 43 previously unknown phone numbers. These numbers plus several others have been tasked." The document continues by saying the new phone numbers had helped the agency discover still more new con-

tact details to add to their monitoring: "These numbers have provided lead information to other numbers that have subsequently been tasked." But the memo acknowledges that eavesdropping on the numbers had produced "little reportable intelligence". In the wake of the Merkel row, the US is facing growing international criticism that any intelligence benefit from spying on friendly governments is far outweighed by the potential diplomatic damage. The memo then asks analysts to think about any customers they currently serve who might similarly be happy to turn over details of their contacts. "This success leads S2 [signals intelligence] to wonder if there are NSA liaisons whose supported customers may be willing to share their 'Rolodexes' or phone lists with NSA as potential sources of intelligence," it states. "S2 welcomes such information!" The document suggests that sometimes these offers come unsolicited, with US "customers" spontaneously offering the agency access to their overseas networks. "From time to time, SID is offered access to the personal contact databases of US officials," it states. "Such 'Rolodexes' may contain contact information for foreign political or military leaders, to include direct line, fax, residence and cellular numbers." The Guardian approached the Obama administration for comment on the latest document. Officials declined to respond directly to the new material, instead referring to comments delivered by Carney at Thursday's daily briefing. Carney told reporters: "The [NSA] revelations have clearly caused tension in our relationships with some countries, and we are dealing with that through diplomatic channels. "These are very important relations both economically and for our security, and we will work to maintain the closest possible ties." The public accusation of spying on Merkel adds to mounting political tensions in Europe about the scope of US surveillance on the governments of its allies, after a cascade of backlashes and apologetic phone calls with leaders across the continent over the course of the week. Asked on Wednesday evening if the NSA had in the past tracked the German chancellor's communications, Cait-
lin Hayden, the White House's National Security Council spokeswoman, said: "The United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of Chancellor Merkel. Beyond that, I'm not in a position to comment publicly on every specific alleged intelligence activity." At the daily briefing on Thursday, Carney again refused to answer repeated questions about whether the US had spied on Merkel's calls in the past. The NSA memo seen by the Guardian was written halfway through George W Bush's second term, when Condoleezza Rice was secretary of state and Donald Rumsfeld was in his final months as defence secretary. Merkel, who, according to Reuters, suspected the surveillance after finding her mobile phone number written on a US document, is said to have called for US surveillance to be placed on a new legal footing during a phone call to President Obama. "The [German] federal government, as a close ally and partner of the US, expects in the future a clear contractual basis for the activity of the services and their co-operation," she told the president. The leader of Germany's Green party, Katrin GoringEckhart, called the alleged spying an "unprecedented breach of trust" between the two countries. Earlier in the week, Obama called the French president Franรงois Hollande in response to reports in Le Monde that the NSA accessed more than 70m phone records of French citizens in a single 30-day period, while earlier reports in Der Spiegel uncovered NSA activity against the offices and communications of senior officials of the European Union. The European Commission, the executive body of the EU, this week backed proposals that could require US tech companies to seek permission before handing over EU citizens' data to US intelligence agencies, while the European parliament voted in favour of suspending a transatlantic bank data sharing agreement after Der Spiegel revealed the agency was monitoring the international bank transfer system Swift.

What Bragging on Facebook Says About Us
By: Danny Rubin
“I am so honored to announce…” “I am excited to tell everyone…” “Guess what happened to me?!” On a typical day, our Facebook News Feeds are full of swagger and bravado. Someone always has something to brag about. We’ve all done it, although certain people (and we know exactly who they are) boast way more than others. You might assume a big-time bragger is a classic narcissist with an ego the size of Mark Zuckerberg’s four new houses combined. Turns out, you’re flat wrong. According to research from Dr. James Pennebaker, a psychologist at the University of Texas, people who frequently use “I” and focus on themselves are less secure than those who limit their use of the word. Pennebaker’s study claims people who say “I” a lot “subconsciously believe they are subordinate to the person to whom they are talking.” That means, when a Facebook friend tells you about his recent “personal best” 10-mile race, he’s not being egotistical. He may actually be insecure and trying to please. Aside from profanity and nudity, there are few “rules” on Facebook on what we share and how we share it. We rarely feel compelled to hold back from gushing about our lives. Perhaps you’ve seen this status update once or twice? “I have the most perfect husband!” which is then followed the obligatory bouquet of red roses.
Sure, people might give the post a few “likes” and smattering of “OMG You’re so lucky!” and “What an amazing guy!” Dr. Pennebacker, however, contends it makes you look insecure. On the flipside, if we monitor our number of “I” statements on Facebook, we elevate ourselves and come across as confident. Here’s the proof based on Dr. Pennebaker’s work: “…112 psychology students were assigned to same-sex groups of two. The pairs worked to solve a series of complex problems. All interaction took place online. No one was assigned to a leadership role, but participants were asked at the end of the experiment who they thought had power and status. Researchers found that the higher the person’s perceived power, the less he or she used ‘I.’” Translation: the less we brag about ourselves, the more selfassured we appear. A quick pat-on-the-back on Facebook might seem insignificant since everyone does it. But the “I” holds subtle power and can negatively impact how people view us. Go ahead and use Facebook to share your world with family and friends. It’s still the quickest and smartest way to connect with people who matter. While you’re tapping away in the status bar, be sure to keep track of your “I” statements. If possible, use “we” instead of “I” and take the attention off yourself. Dr. Pennebaker: “Pronouns signal where someone’s internal focus is pointing.” In that way, look out at the world and not in at

"Gravity," Alfonso Cuarón's 3-D space epic starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, soared to the top of the North American box office on its opening weekend, earning $55.8 million — the biggest October opening of all time, according to the Hollywood Reporter — and raves from critics. But according to world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the film is littered with inaccuracies in its depiction of space. For example, Tyson wrote on Twitter, why was Bullock's hair, "in otherwise convincing" zero-gravity scenes, not floating "freely on her head"? Tyson, who saw the movie on Sunday, continued the rant/review in a series of tweets to his 1.4 million followers.
