2014 it is! by Athina krikeli ellopia@aol.com

This is MY YEAR, I feel it in my bone, I know it, yes 2014 will be a great one for me, I carry on passionately. This sounds familiar. I've played this tune in my mind before, every year maybe, Oh well, I will benefit from anything it brings. With that said I am thinking about midnight of December thirty first, the exact moment the year changes; would I feel something this time, like a change in frequency going through me or a more vivid aura around everything? What's the big ado about that particular moment the child in me asks? I've waited for this 365 days. Did I miss it, can I go back to that moment, relive it and do it right this time, can I fix it somehow? With all my passionate attitude, I still feel the same as I did when it was 2013. How long would it take me to land with both feet in to 2014 I wonder? Thank God I bounce back quickly. Time flies and my best bet is to go along, with the flow as they say. I have learned with the years to assume

responsibility for what each year brings me. I know thoughts and words create, I will put my best effort forth to choose the good ones. I am on an ongoing quest of learning from my experiences, and the ones of those around me. My endless conversations with my friend, Personal Development Coach Maria Papapetros have paid. She reminds me often of the reward waiting for me at the end of the rainbow; Self empowerment, being in charge of my own life, dancing to my own tune sort of speak. All right I have …. bounced back all ready. The awkward moment has dissolved in love, hugs kisses, smiles and well wishing. I offer gratitude to last year and release it with love. Time for fun, joy and sharing. I am happy I still have the little girl in me, who is sentimental and full of wonder. This is OUR YEAR I tell her. Yes the “Happy New Year moment is not tangible” but still magical and powerful as the beauty of a sunset, the joy of a smile, the happiness of a kiss!

NELSON MANDELA LIFE AND TIMES

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in Mvezo, Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo.

His father died when he was 12 years old (1930) and the young Rolihlahla became a ward of Jongintaba at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni. Hearing the elder’s stories of his ancestor’s valour during the wars of resistance, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people. He attended primary school in Qunu where his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the

custom to give all school children “Christian” names. He completed his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and went on to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute, where he matriculated. Nelson Mandela began his studies for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare but did not complete the degree there as he was expelled for joining in a student protest. He completed his BA through the University of South Africa and went back to Fort Hare for his graduation in 1943. On his return to the Great Place at Mqhekezweni the King was furious and said if he didn’t return to Fort Hare he would ar-

range wives for him and his cousin Justice. They ran away to Johannesburg instead, arriving there in 1941. There he worked as a mine security officer and after meeting Walter Sisulu, an estate agent, who introduced him to Lazar Sidelsky. He then did his articles through a firm of attorneys, Witkin Eidelman and Sidelsky. Meanwhile he began studying for an LLB at the University of the Witwatersrand. By his own admission he was a poor student and left the university in 1952 without graduating. He only started studying again through the University of London after his imprisonment in 1962 but also did not complete that degree. In 1989, while in the last months of his imprisonment, he obtained an LLB through the University of South Africa. He graduated in absentia at a ceremony in Cape Town. Nelson Mandela, while increasingly politically involved from 1942, only joined the African National Congress in 1944 when he helped to form the ANC Youth League. In 1944 he married Walter Sisulu’s cousin Evelyn Mase, a nurse. They had two sons, Madiba Thembekile ‘Thembi’ and Makgatho and two daughters both called Makaziwe, the first of whom died in infancy. They effectively separated in 1955 and divorced in 1958. Nelson Mandela rose through the ranks of the ANCYL and through its work, in 1949 the ANC adopted a more radical mass-based policy, the Programme of Action. In 1952 he was chosen at the National Volunteerin-Chief of the Defiance Campaign with Maulvi Cachalia as his deputy. This campaign of civil disobedience against six unjust laws was a joint programme between the ANC and the South African Indian Congress. He and 19 others were charged under the Suppression of Communism Act for their part in the campaign and sentenced to nine

months hard labour, suspended for two years. A two-year diploma in law on top of his BA allowed Nelson Mandela to practice law, and in August 1952 he and Oliver Tambo established South Africa’s first black law firm, Mandela and Tambo. At the end of 1952 he was banned for the first time. As a restricted person he was only permitted to watch in secret as the Freedom Charter was adopted in Kliptown on 26 June 1955. Nelson Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop on 5 December 1955, which led to the 1956 Treason Trial. Men and women of all races found themselves in the dock in the marathon trial that only ended when the last 28 accused, including Mr Mandela were acquitted on 29 March 1961. On 21 March 1960 police killed 69 unarmed people in a protest against the pass laws held at Sharpeville. This led to the country’s first state of emergency and the banning of the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress on 8 April. Nelson Mandela and his colleagues in the Treason Trial were among thousands detained during the state of emergency. During the trial on 14 June 1958 Nelson Mandela married a social worker, Winnie Madikizela. They had two daughters, Zenani and Zindziswa. The couple divorced in 1996. Days before the end of the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela travelled to Pietermaritzburg to speak at the All-in Africa Conference, which resolved that he should write to Prime Minister Verwoerd requesting a non-racial national convention, and to warn that should he not agree there would be a national strike against South Africa becoming a republic. As soon as he and his colleagues were acquitted in the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela went underground and began planning a national strike for 29, 30 and 31 March.

NELSON MANDELA LIFE AND TIMES

In the face of massive mobilisation of state security the strike was called off early. In June 1961 he was asked to lead the armed struggle and helped to establish Umkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation). On 11 January 1962, using the adopted name David Motsamayi, Nelson Mandela secretly left South Africa. He travelled around Africa and visited England to gain support for the armed struggle. He received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia and returned to South Africa in July 1962. He was arrested in a police roadblock outside Howick on 5 August while returning from KwaZulu-Natal where he briefed ANC President Chief Albert Luthuli about his trip.

He was charged with leaving the country illegally and inciting workers to strike. He was convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment which he began serving in the Pretoria Local Prison. On 27 May 1963 he was transferred to Robben Island and returned to Pretoria on 12 June. Within a month police raided a secret hide-out in Rivonia used by ANC and Communist Party activists, and several of his comrades were arrested.

On 9 October 1963 Nelson Mandela joined ten others on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial. While facing the death penalty his words to the court at the end of his famous ‘Speech from the Dock’ on 20 April 1964 became immortalised: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” On 11 June 1964 Nelson Mandela and seven other accused: Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Denis Goldberg, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni were convicted and the next day were sentenced to life imprisonment. Denis Goldberg was sent to Pretoria Prison because he was white, while the others went to Robben Island. Nelson Mandela’s mother died in 1968 and his eldest son Thembi in 1969. He was not allowed to attend their funerals.

NELSON MANDELA LIFE AND TIMES On 31 March 1982 Nelson Mandela was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town with Sisulu, Mhlaba and Mlangeni. Kathrada joined them in October. When he returned to the prison in November 1985 after prostate surgery Nelson Mandela was held alone. Justice Minister Kobie Coetsee visited him in hospital. Later Nelson Mandela initiated talks about an ultimate meeting between the apartheid government and the ANC. On 12 August 1988 he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. After more than three months in two hospitals he was transferred on 7 December 1988 to a house at Victor Verster Prison near Paarl where he spent his last 14 months of imprisonment. He was released from its gates on Sunday 11 February 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC and the PAC and nearly four months after the release of his remaining Rivonia comrades. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. Nelson Mandela immersed himself in official talks to end white minority rule and in 1991 was elected ANC Presi-

dent to replace his ailing friend Oliver Tambo. In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and on 27 April 1994 he voted for the first time in his life. On 10 May 1994 he was inaugurated South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married Graça Machel, his third wife. True to his promise Nelson Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President. He continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund he set up in 1995 and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation. In April 2007 his grandson Mandla Mandela became head of the Mvezo Traditional Council at a ceremony at the Mvezo Great Place. Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism. His life has been an inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived; to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation. He died at his home in Johannesburg on 5 December 2013.

Ex-Official Says FBI Can Secretly Activate an Individual’s Webcam Without the Indicator Light Turning On by Oliver Darcy

According to The Washington Post the FBI has had the ability to secretly activate a computer’s camera without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording for years now. So for all of you who leave your laptops on and open…we hope you aren’t doing anything…embarrassing! Hell we hope you aren’t doing simple things like getting dressed or undressed!

The FBI can secretly activate a computer’s webcam to spy on an individual without turning on the indicator light, a former official revealed to the Washington Post in an article published Friday. According to the Washington Post’s account of what Marcus Thomas — former assistant director of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico — said, “The FBI has been able to covertly activate a computer’s camera — without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording — for several years, and has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigations.” “Because of encryption and because targets are increasingly using mobile

devices, law enforcement is realizing that more and more they’re going to have to be on the device — or in the cloud,” Thomas added, in reference to remote storage services. “There’s the realization out there that they’re going to have to use these types of tools more and more.” TheBlaze has previously reported on hackers using remote access tools to activate an individual’s webcam and spy on them. This post has been updated to reflect that Thomas is an ex-FBI official. Ex-Official Says FBI Can Secretly Activate an Individual’s Webcam Without the Indicator Light Turning On your laptops on and open…we hope you aren’t doing anything…embarrassing! Hell we hope you aren’t doing simple things like getting dressed or undressed! Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division, claims that this sort of creepy spy laptop recording is “mainly” used in terrorism cases or the “most serious” of criminal investigations. Hmmm well, we aren’t doing anything that should trigger those types of investigations. And yet somehow we still don’t feel comforted by that information. When we think of all of the things people do when they

think they are alone…we’re talking from the habitual nose picker to the ones who dance around and sing into hair brushes…or the ones who yell at the TV. Or on the other side of the spectrum..you know what we mean.. those who do things that we won’t mention but you can just about guess at…with all that happening we bet the FBI have been getting a real eyeful! So we guess the moral to the story is this…if your laptop is open…just.. don’t…do it! Because we’ve all had that creepy feeling as though we were being watched at one point or another…if you’re lap top is open…you may just be right!

Malware communicates at a distance of 65 feet using built-in mics and speakers. by Dan Goodin

Computer scientists have proposed a malware prototype that uses inaudible audio signals to communicate, a capability that allows the malware to covertly transmit keystrokes and other sensitive data even when infected machines have no network connection. The proof-of-concept software—or malicious trojans that adopt the same high-frequency communication methods—could prove especially adept in penetrating highly sensitive environments that routinely place an “air gap” between computers and the outside world. Using nothing more than the built-in microphones and speakers of standard computers, the researchers were

able to transmit passwords and other small amounts of data from distances of almost 65 feet. The software can transfer data at much greater distances by employing an acoustical mesh network made up of attacker-controlled devices that repeat the audio signals. The researchers, from Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing, and Ergonomics, recently disclosed their findings in a paper published in the Journal of Communications. It came a few weeks after a security researcher said his computers were infected with a mysterious piece of malware that

used high-frequency transmissions to jump air gaps. The new research neither confirms nor disproves Dragos Ruiu’s claims of the so-called badBIOS infections, but it does show that high-frequency networking is easily within the grasp of today’s malware. “In our article, we describe how the complete concept of air gaps can be considered obsolete as commonly available laptops can communicate over their internal speakers and microphones and even form a covert acoustical mesh network,” one of the authors, Michael Hanspach, wrote in an e-mail. “Over this covert network, information can travel over multiple hops of infected nodes, connecting completely isolated computing systems and networks (e.g. the internet) to each other. We also propose some countermeasures against participation in a covert network.” The researchers developed several ways to use inaudible sounds to transmit data between two Lenovo T400 laptops using only their built-in microphones and speakers. The most effective technique relied on software originally developed to acoustically transmit data under water. Created by the Research Department for Underwater Acoustics and Geophysics in Germany, the so-called adaptive communication system (ACS) modem was able to transmit data between laptops as much as 19.7 meters (64.6 feet) apart. By chaining additional

devices that pick up the signal and repeat it to other nearby devices, the mesh network can overcome much greater distances. The ACS modem provided better reliability than other techniques that were also able to use only the laptops’ speakers and microphones to communicate. Still, it came with one significant drawback—a transmission rate of about 20 bits per second, a tiny fraction of standard network connections. The paltry bandwidth forecloses the ability of transmitting video or any other kinds of data with large file sizes. The researchers said attackers could overcome that shortcoming by equipping the trojan with functions that transmit only certain types of data, such as login credentials captured from a keylogger or a memory dumper. “This small bandwidth might actually be enough to transfer critical information (such as keystrokes),” Hanspach wrote. “You don’t even have to think about all keystrokes. If you have a keylogger that is able to recognize authentication materials, it may only occasionally forward these detected passwords over the network, leading to a very stealthy state of the network. And you could forward any small-sized information such as private encryption keys or maybe malicious commands to an infected piece of construction.”

Words of Wisdom

2014 is here HALLELUJAH MARIA PAPAPETROS

Intuitive Consultant

So much to look forward to and do. I got my notebook out and went to work. First things first, I offered a prayer of GRATITUDE to God for helping me making it through 2013 in one piece, and the privilege to be an occupant of this planet. Then I took accounting of the events of the year past – especially the ones not to my liking – and worked on forgiving myself for missing the opportunity to grow from some of them. I replayed them in my mind and corrected the “what I went through, don’t ask”, to “look at what I have over come”. Next I made a list of people I had held responsible for my mistakes, and a note to apologize to them and make it up to everyone somehow. Remembering thought creates; I assumed responsibility for “past creations” and felt empowered. Forgiving all, myself included freed me to ask for miracles like to “be in the moment” for the year ahead, and make fresh decisions about my future. I wrote my desires using, I am, and I have, such as “I have peace of mind, love, great health, goodness etc.”, and “I am abundantly wealthy, fearless, and considerate.” I promised myself to ‘help’ my desires come to pass by meditating on them with expectancy, I gave thanks for answered prayer and kissed 2013 goodbye. Happy New Year, may you be a masterpiece with the colors of joy and good cheer!

Elias Plagianos Young GreekAmerican Director Taking On The Film Industry New York Daily News Photo credit

by Nick Christophers Since Nia Vardalos lit the Greek fire in Hollywood with her blockbuster “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, more talented Greek Americans have come forth with great works. Actors like Costas Mandylor, Nick Cassavetes, Louis Mandylor and Melina Kanakaredes have proven what they are made of. Yet there are those who are still breaking the “red tape” of Hollywood to make their Greek mark. Elias Plagianos has recently done that. A young Greek-American who was raised in Brooklyn has brought his background to the forefront of his work in many ways. His first production and first attempt at directing a film was in high school. The production was titled “Fried Cheese” which was really a TV show. A local cable company provided a Public Access channel that offered a half hour slot every week. All Elias had to do was provide content that fit the channel’s guidelines. “I took advantage of that and along with some friends produced a sketch comedy show. I was forced to learn how to shoot, edit, write and act in order to get this show on the air every week. It allowed me to experiment with different ways to tell stories and I quickly realized I enjoyed the challenge of being behind the camera more than telling jokes in front of it.” He admits that he learned more about his career in High School than in College. This was due mostly in part to his teacher, Elias grew up admiring such legends like Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi, Steven Soderbergh and John Cassavetes. Before Elias was able

to work fully on a feature he produced many smaller projects. He has done everything from workout videos to travel documentaries. As a young boy Elias was introduced to the invoking Greek myths by his father those stories would play a role in his future as a director. Also the heroic characters of Batman and Superman attracted his attention. This fusion of the myths and comics inspired him to produce the film “Redskins Revenge”. The film is based on the subject of zombies. The production was soon to see the light of day and won first place at the Zombiefest which was judged by the original team behind the film “Night Of The Living Dead”. Recently, Elias has completed and released a new film entitled “Crimson Mask”. The production was based on some true events in his life. From the films location in Brooklyn, New York to the inspiration to do the project which derived from his ethnic roots the film had managed to win over 35 awards at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and was showcased there as well. Elias has always had the support of his family at every turn. Whether he succeeded or failed. He admits that his parents gave him the greatest gift of all, patience. Currently, Elias is working on a new project with Jason Rlley and Lindsay MacAdam of Evos Media / Redbear Entertainment. The project which is in its infant stages appears to have more financial resources for Elias to really expand on his talents.

What to do to inherit in Greece By Christos ILIOPOULOS*

A matter of great importance is the number and type of assets of the estate, where they are located and if the heir keeps any deeds about the real estate properties, or other information about bank account numbers etc. You do not live in Greece and you learn that you are entitled to an inheritance in this country. What are the steps you need to take in order to claim your share? The first thing that must be done is to get legal advice by a lawyer in Greece, so you are informed about your rights and how to exercise them. You will find out whether you inherit the entire estate (100%) or a share of it. Also, you will learn what information and documents from your end are required, so that the part of the inheritance that you are entitled to becomes your property. The lawyer in Greece will ask you questions about the next of kin of the deceased. It is vital under Greek inheritance law to establish who are the close blood relatives, their names (first and last name, as well as their father and mother name, if you know them), and their exact relation

to the deceased. Another important matter is whether the deceased has left a will or not. If there is a will, we must know if it was drawn up in Greece, or in another country. Also, we must find out if the will is trusted with a notary or an attorney, or if it is a so called holographic will, (a piece of handwritten paper), which is kept by a relative, a friend, or it is simply found in the house where the deceased lived or elsewhere. If a will exists, normally it will have to be probated. If it was drawn up outside of Greece, it has first to be probated at the country where it was drawn up and then it will also be probated in Greece. If there is no will, the intestate succession takes place and we must work with the next of kin. Depending on wheth-

What to do to inherit in Greece cont from page 33 er the deceased had the Greek citizenship or not, we will found out who are the heirs who inherit intestate, meaning without a will. The heir must also know where the deceased passed away, so we obtain the death certificate. If he/she does not know, the lawyer will help. A matter of great importance is the number and type of assets of the estate, where they are located and if the heir keeps any deeds about the real estate properties, or other information about bank account numbers etc. If the heir does not have a lot of information about this, the lawyer will act to search for assets, but the heir must give at least some clues, especially about the specific area or areas of Greece where assets may be located. If we know the place where the properties are located, even if we do not have any deeds or other documents which describe the titles, everything can be found at the local cadaster, as long as we know the name, last name and preferably, the father name of the deceased. It must be noted that all legal and commercial deeds and acts in Greece require not only the name (first and last), but also the parents’ names of the persons involved in the transactions. Sometimes we may have to make a title search not in the name of the deceased, but in the name of his parents, or even uncles, aunts or other relatives, in case title had not officially passed to the deceased and the titles are still in the names of his parents, grandparents or other relatives. In such a case, it will be a double or even triple inheritance succession, for example from the grandmother to her son (deceased) and then to the spouse and children of the son, who are now the present heirs. Under Greek law, apart from the death certificate, which if not issued in Greece, is officially obtained from the country of issue, translated and registered in Greece, we also have to issue from a Greek Municipality the certificate of

next of kin. This is issued only in case the deceased had the Greek citizenship and we know where in Greece he/she was registered. The same applies even if the deceased had the Greek, as well as another citizenship. To issue the certificate of next of kin, two witnesses are required to sign an affidavit stating the names of the close blood relatives. One of the two witnesses can be one of the heirs. If the deceased was not a Greek citizen, a legal opinion by a lawyer or a jurist from the country of the deceased’s citizenship must be obtained, to advise on the intestate laws of that country, particularly if there is no will. Once type and number of assets, the next of kin and the inheritance shares are established, the lawyer must draft documents to file the estate to the tax office, unless the deceased has died before 1995, in which case the heirs do not pay any inheritance tax at all, irrespective of the value of the estate. Finally, the heirs, in person, or through their attorney, sign the deed of acceptance of inheritance at the notary, which subsequently is registered with the local cadaster(s), so the real estate assets become personal property of the heirs. If the heirs cannot stay in Greece during the weeks or months which are necessary to complete the paperwork, they sign a power of attorney (POA), to empower their lawyer to sign everything as if they were present in Greece. If the estate includes bank accounts, instead of the deed at the notary, the heirs may have to obtain a court ruling, called Klironomitirio, to order the bank to release to them the balance of the account(s). *Christos ILIOPOULOS, attorney at the Supreme Court of Greece , LL.M. www.greekadvocate.eu e-mail: ktimatologiolaw@yahoo.gr bm-bioxoi@otenet.gr
