I am a lefty! My automobile, too! And I will shout it out till they get me and lock me in Guantanamo! But of course I will not have the time to explain to them what I mean by that and only the following editorial note will justify my actions to my children and grandchildren – which I do not have yet! About a month or so my left hand works only partially -in the first three gears- and I was operated on my wrist for reasons that they don't concern anybody – but my good Doctor Hantes which he performed the operation at the Larissa University Hospital.) «Ah thank God it's only the left one» my friends and colleagues say in order to make me feel better – and they are looking with really sympathetic eyes and a broad smile. But when I explained to them the "curse" to be a leftist – in every possible way – the look at me with pity. "It serves you right, you dirty communist" I hear, like an echo from the entire Harlem choir Sunday morning service in Riverside church. It's like a tremendous thunder with disgust, while they are dancing with the class and preciseness of a truck driver after consuming a case of beer. At the same time my "left" side takes water, I mean my once beautiful car, which I smashed in a collision that was entire my fault, while it danced three terrible double axels, went right side (and I enjoyed that a lot dear reader) on to a cement column on the side street. My left side came out intact, while the right got all the force of the hit. The car is totaled according to the insurance and it looks like a crescent moon in which someone can enter only from the left side. It's like driving a crescent moon that was hit sideways somewhere in Iraq and ended up in the streets of Astoria. After that life goes on, order has returned in the political arena, and Easter day we will roast the traditional lamb with both hands. Unless…
Είμαι Αριστερή! Το ίδιο και το αυτοκίνητό μου! Και θα το διατυμπανίζω μέχρι να με ακούσουν οι Αρχές και να με πετάξουν στο Γκουατανάμο! Βέβαια δεν θα προλάβω να τους εξηγήσω τι εννοώ και μάλλον μόνο αυτό το editorial θα με δικαιώσει στα παιδιά και στα εγγόνια μου (που δεν έχω). Εδώ και ένα μήνα το αριστερό μου χέρι βρίσκεται σε ημιλειτουργία μια και εγχειρίσθηκε στον καρπό για λόγους που αξίζει να αγνοήσουμε ( όχι όμως και τον ταλαντούχο γιατρό Χαντέ που με εγχείρησε στο Πανεπιστημιακό της Λάρισας). «Αχ ευτυχώς είναι το αριστερό» - μου λένε παρήγορα φίλοι και γνωστοί - και η ανακούφιση ξεχείλιζε από παντού. Κι όταν τους εξηγώ το δράμα του να είσαι αριστερός -σε όλο του το εύροςμε κοιτούν περίλυπα! «καλά να πάθεις παλιοκουμμούνι» είναι σα να μου ψέλνει με ρυθμό η χορωδία του Χάρλεμ - και αυτοί λικνίζονται με χάρη νταλικέρη Την ίδια στιγμή που η "αριστερή μου μπάζει", το αυτοκίνητό μου σε μια ηρωική τράκα (που έφταιγα εγώ) αφού έκανε τρεις κακόγουστες πιρουέτες κατέληξε «με το δεξί» (και πολύ το χάρηκα) σε κολώνα (μάλλον ηλεκτρική). Η αριστερά σ αυτή την μάχη δικαιώθηκε με δύο άθικτες πόρτες, ενώ η δεξιά υπέστη τον όλεθρο! Το χειρουργημένο μου αριστερό χέρι δικαιώθηκε και το δεξί συμμαζεύτηκε γιατί παραείχε πάρει αέρα, λόγω μονοπωλίου. Στο αυτοκίνητό μου πλέον που έχει καταστραφεί ολοσχερώς -σύμφωνα με την ασφάλεια- επιτρέπεται η είσοδος μόνο στους εκ αριστερών, το αριστερό μου χέρι ακουμπά με στόμφο (και γύψο) το τιμόνι, και η τάξη έχει επανέλθει στην πολιτική αρένα της ζωής μας. Το Πάσχα όμως λέω να αφήσουμε τα… πολιτικά στην άκρη, να δώσουμε τόπο στην οργή και να γυρνάμε το αρνί και με τα δύο χέρια! Ετσι θα τα εξασκήσουμε και στο άθλημα της ανοιχτής παλάμης, ποτέ δεν ξέρεις…

Addressed to the international academic community
by Nikolaos Martis Former Minister When Slovenia declared its independence in 1991, it issued a banknote depicting an Austrian throne of the fourteenth century. Austria immediately accused Slovenia of an infringement upon its history and its symbols and demanded that the banknote be withdrawn. The Slovenians complied. Under the circumstances, how should Greece react, given the fact that FYROM - as attested by its new school textbooks for 1992-3 - appropriate the whole of Macedonian history which is a cherished element of the Greek national and cultural identity? The Hellenistic period (335-30 BC) was created by Alexander the Great and [ Image ] his Greek Macedonian diadochi, and was so named because it was, during that period, that the Hellenic culture was diffused throughout the world. It brought new scientific, philosophical, and religious ideas that dominated the world for centuries and influenced the development of all cultures. Can these achievements, by any stress of imagination, be attributed to the... ancestors of FYROM? Their ancestors came into the area centuries after that period. In June 1992, Dr. Henry Kissinger, as a self-respecting historian, made a statement in Paris in which he described the history of Macedonia as the strong weapon that justifies Greece's inalienable right to the name of "Macedonia". As I pointed out in a letter to President Clinton on November 20, 1993 the creation of the "Republic of Macedonia" is an act of hostility against Greece for the following reasons: 1. it constitutes an illicit usurpation of the name, the history and the cultural heritage of Greek Macedonia;
2. it denies the "Greek character" of Greek Macedonia and, thus, encourages the aggressive pretensions against Greek territories; 3. it interrupts the continuity of Greek history, given that, from 337 BC the Greeks at Corinth (A< HREF="doc14. html">see Document No 14) made first Philip and later his son Alexander (not, certainly, Mr. Gligorov's ancestors) their King and Commander-in-Chief in the war against the Persians. It is everybody's duty to research and confirm the truth of these assertions. Ancient Macedonia, as a constituent element of Hellenism, is the very cornerstone of modern Western civilization, an arena of desperate battles for freedom and democracy; in particular the international centers of science and learning, have an obligation towards the free people to present the truth, the fundamental prerequisite of democracy. The following Macedonian Greeks set their seal on the history of Greece, Europe, and the whole world: 1. Philip of Macedon, who established the Macedonian Kingdom as a great political power and urged on by the Athenian Isocrates, was the pioneer of the European idea. "Argos is the land of your fathers". Isocrates, To Philip XII, 32 (Loeb, G. Norlin); 2. Aristotle, the scientist and philosopher whose work will always influence research and knowledge; 3. Alexander the Great, the most stupendous historical figure ever, who influenced the course of world history tremendously. Alexander was the first ever to talk of peace and fraternity between all peoples (Plutarch's On the Fate and Virtue of Alexander and Holzner and Arrian) and the first to speak out against racial discrimination (Arrian and Martis' Logos).
ΤEΛΟΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΡΟΔΟΣΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΤΗΝ ΑΣΧΗΜΙΑ Ανοιχτή επιστολή του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη Ανεξάρτητα από τα αποτελέσματα των αμερικανικών εκλογών, δηλαδή ανεξάρτητα από το ποιος θα είναι ο μελλοντικός πρόεδρος, η κολοσσιαία πολεμική μηχανή έχει ήδη μπει μπροστά με στόχο την εξόντωση όλων όσων θεωρεί εχθρούς της. Ακόμη και αυτών όπως η Ελλάδα που δεν υπακούνε τυφλά τις εντολές της, Ιράν, Κορέα, Αραβικός κόσμος, μη υποτελείς και φυσικά άμεσα η Ρωσία και στο βάθος η Κίνα. Μετά θα έρθει η σειρά των « ατάκτων» της Νοτίου Αμερικής. Ένας άμεσος και θανάσιμος κίνδυνος, πολυπρόσωπος, πολυπλόκαμος σαν χταπόδι κάνει αργά αλλά σταθερά την εμφάνισή του στο προσκήνιο της παγκόσμιας ιστορίας. Σημερινός στοίχος είναι τα Βαλκάνια με κύριο σύμμαχο την «Μεγάλη Αλβανία», ξεκινώντας από το Κόσσοβο με συνεργάτες τους υπεύθυνους για μαζικές δολοφονίες U.C.K. Και σαν να μην έφταναν όλα αυτά, γεγονός πρωτοφανές για τη χώρα μας, μερικοί « επιστήμονες» επέλεξαν το αμφιθέατρο του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου για να αναπτύξουν δημόσια την υποστήριξή τους σε ένα βασικό αίτημα της « Μεγάλης Αλβανίας», την κατάκτηση της Ηπείρου έως την Πρέβεζα, με την δικαιολογία ότι ανήκε στην Αλβανική Τσαμουριά, από όπου τους έδιωξαν με εγκληματικές πράξεις οι έλληνες. Ασφαλώς πρόκειται για οργανωμένη προβοκάτσια των Η.Π.Α, ώστε να μελετηθούν οι δικές μας αντιδράσεις και να προπαρασκευαστεί ψυχολογικά η εδαφική επέκταση της Αλβανίας μετά το Κόσσοβο και σε ένα μεγάλο τμήμα των Αλβανοφώνων των Σκοπίων και ακολούθως και σε δικά μας εδάφη. Από την άλλη μεριά η σύμπλευση της Τουρκίας με τις Η.Π.Α στο Κόσσοβο, που έσπευσε πρώτη αυτή να το αναγνωρίσει, προετοιμάζει το έδαφος για πονηρά σχέδια σε βάρος της χώρας μας με βάση όχι μόνον το Αιγαίο και την Κύπρο, αλλά κα τη μουσουλμανική μειονότητα στη Θράκη, που ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα του Κοσσόβου μπορεί να διεκδικήσει την δική της ανεξαρτησία. Η πολιτική ηγεσία των Σκοπίων φαίνεται ότι γνωρίζει από πρώτο χέρι τα σχέδια των Η.Π.Α και για αυτό δείχνει αυτή την αλαζονική αδιαλλαξία. Και πράγματι σε αυτή τη φάση συμπορεύονται με την πολιτική που εκθέσαμε. Όμως τι θα κάνουν όταν ξεκινήσει η επόμενη φάση, αυτής της φολοαλβανικής τακτικής, οπότε το κρατίδιό τους θα κοπεί στη μέση, γιατί θα πρέπει να γνωρίζουν τόσο αυτοί, όσο και οι ΗΠΑ, ότι μπορούν να αυτοαποκαλούνται Μακεδόνες, όμως φυλετικά είναι Σλάβοι και ως εκ τούτου κατατάσσονται ουσιαστικά στη χωρία των εχθρών των ΗΠΑ μαζί με την Ρωσία, τη Σερβία αλλά κα τη Βουλγαρία που και αυτή δεν πρέπει να έχει αυταπάτες.
Έτσι γυρίζοντας σε εμάς τους Έλληνες θα πρέπει να δούμε ότι η κατάσταση όντως εξελίσσεται όπως εξελίσσεται και είναι παραπάνω από τραγική δεδομένου ότι οι Αμερικανοί δεν πείθονται, όσες υποκλίσεις και αν κάνουν απέναντί τους οι ποικιλόμορφες αμερικανόφιλες ηγεσίες, και αυτό γιατί φοβούνται, μισούν τον λαό μας, για τον οποίο είναι βέβαιοι ότι στη μεγάλη του πλειοψηφία απορρίπτει τα φιλοπόλεμα σχέδιά τους, για αυτό θέλει να μας τιμωρήσει με κάθε τρόπο εκτός και αν αποφασίσουμε όλοι μαζί να γονατίσουμε και να φιλήσουμε τα πόδια τους κάνοντας όρκους ότι από δω και στο εξής θάμασε καλά παιδιά και πειθήνια όργανα στην όποια πολιτική τους. Όμως αφού το παιχνίδι είναι για μας έτσι και αλλιώς χαμένο, τότε ας πέσουμε με το κεφάλι ψηλά. Ας μην περιμένουμε βοήθεια από πουθενά. Ούτε έχουμε συμμάχους, είμαστε εμείς και εμείς, ας φροντίσουμε λοιπόν να είμαστε τουλάχιστον ωραίοι, περήφανοι και γιατί όχι χαρούμενοι, αφού θα έχουμε πάρει τη μεγάλη απόφαση να γίνουμε όλοι μαζί μια γροθιά ενωμένοι μπροστά στην προδοσία και την ασχήμια που χτυπάει την πόρτα μας. Γιατί είναι προδοσία η αναγνώριση του Κοσσόβου χωρίς την έγκριση της διεθνούς κοινότητας του ΟΗΕ, δηλαδή μιας επαρχίας που από αιώνες αποτελεί τμήμα της Σερβίας και τι θα νοιώθαμε εμείς αν μεθαύριο έπαιρναν με το έτσι θέλω τη μισή Κύπρο , την Θράκη ή την Ήπειρο; Όπως είναι ασχήμια να ανεχόμαστε να μας περιφρονούν και να μας εξυβρίζουν οχυρωμένοι κάτω από τα σκέλια των Αμερικανών οι Σκοπιανοί και εμείς να τους παρακαλάμε και να ζητάμε μεσολάβηση των Αμερικανών, χάνοντας κάθε μέρα όλο και πιο πολύ την αξιοπρέπειά μας και την υπερηφάνειά μας. Ας κλείσουμε τα σύνορα, ας σταματήσουμε τις οικονομικές και διπλωματικές μας σχέσεις και ας τους αφήσουμε να αυτοαποκαλούνται όπως θέλουν, κοροϊδεύοντας τους εαυτούς τους. Οφείλουμε να περάσουμε και από αυτή τη νέα δοκιμασία με το κεφάλι ψηλά. Μπορεί να υποφέρουμε, όμως το ζητούμενο για μας είναι να παραμείνουμε Έλληνες και θα παραμείνουμε Έλληνες αν δεν ξεχνάμε από πόσες δοκιμασίες περάσαμε ως τώρα, όμως στο τέλος πάντα βγήκαμε νικητές. Το ίδιο θα συμβεί και στο μέλλον. Μίκης Θεοδωράκης

«Η Πενσιλβάνια θα είναι η νέα Αϊόβα» προέβλεψε ο εκπρόσωπος τύπου της Χίλαρι Κλίντον, Νταγκ Χάταγουεϊ, μετά το θρίαμβό της σε Οχάιο και Τέξας. Πριν από λίγες εβδομάδες, τα αποκαμωμένα μέλη των αντίπαλων επιτελείων Ομπάμα - Κλίντον και δημοσιογράφοι μιλούσαν χιουμοριστικά για το σενάριο της Πενσιλβάνιας. Τώρα, το σενάριο αυτό είναι εδώ! Τα δύο επιτελεία θα μεταφέρουν μέχρι τις 22 Απριλίου στην Πενσιλβάνια τις αδυναμίες και τα πλεονεκτήματά τους: Ο Ομπάμα θα έχει πιθανότατα ξανακερδίσει τη χαμένη δυναμική του από δύο φιλικές Πολιτείες (Ουαϊόμινγκ και Μισισίπι 8 και 11 Μαρτίου), όπου προηγείται στις δημοσκοπήσεις, και ένα ασφαλές προβάδισμα στους εκλέκτορες (διαθέτει μέχρι στιγμής 1.567 έναντι 1.462 της Κλίντον), που ακόμα και μια ήττα στην Πενσιλβάνια (διεκδικούνται 158 εκλέκτορες) δεν μπορεί να σβήσει. Ομως, η γερουσιαστής της Νέας Υόρκης θα μεταφέρει μαζί της την ανθεκτικότητά της, την ισχυρή υποστήριξη της τοπικής κομματικής βάσης, τη μεγάλη επιρροή της στο ισπανόφωνο εκλογικό σώμα και το μήνυμα ότι μπορεί να κερδίσει το Οχάιο - πολιτεία η οποία παρουσιάζει τα ίδια δημογραφικά χαρακτηριστικά με αυτά της Πενσιλβάνιας. Η Πενσιλβάνια διαφαίνεται ότι θα γίνει το θέατρο της πιο σκληρής αντιπαράθεσης μεταξύ Κλίντον και Ομπάμα, με λεπτομέρειες από τη συνεχιζόμενη δίκη για απάτη του Τόνι Ρέζκο, πρώην χρηματοδότη του μαύρου γερουσιαστή, και ίσως τη δημοσιοποίηση των φορολογικών δηλώσεων των Κλίντον. Ο επικεφαλής της εκστρατείας του Ομπάμα, Ντέιβιντ Αξελροουντ, προειδοποίησε ήδη για τις προσωπικές επιθέσεις και είπε ότι αν η Κλίντον θελήσει να συνεχίσει μια δημόσια συζήτηση για σκάνδαλα και θέματα διαφάνειας ή ηθικής, εκείνοι θα απαντήσουν με τον δικό τους τρόπο: «Αν το προκαλέσει, μπορούμε να μιλήσουμε και εμείς για δεοντολογία και αποκαλύψεις, για δικηγορικές εταιρείες και κτηματομεσιτικές ιστορίες. Υποθέτω πως εκεί θα καταλήξει η κούρσα». Η Χίλαρι Κλίντον, από την πλευρά της, αν και προς την αφροαμερικανική κοινότητα μιλά για «κοινό ψηφοδέλτιο συνεργασίας» με τον Ομπάμα, έχει επιλέξει ως στρατηγική της τη σύγκρουση. Αν είχε να διαλέξει ένα μονοπάτι για τη νίκη στο συνέδριο των Δημοκρατικών τον Αύγουστο στο Ντένβερ, αυτό το μονοπάτι περνάει μέσα από τον Ομπάμα.
Ακόμα και κάτω από τα πιο αισιόδοξα σενάρια, πρέπει να αποδείξει στους υπερ-εκλέκτορες ότι όχι μόνο είναι ικανή, αλλά κι ότι ο Ομπάμα είναι αδύναμος και αποτελεί ριψοκίνδυνη υποψηφιότητα. Τα μαθήματα που πήρε από το Οχάιο και το Τέξας είναι ξεκάθαρα: Η ευθεία επίθεση στον Ομπάμα λειτουργεί υπέρ της. Πέντε ημέρες πριν από τις προκριματικές εκλογές της 4ης Μαρτίου αμφισβήτησε την ικανότητά του να διαχειριστεί θέματα εθνικής ασφάλειας. Την ίδια περίοδο τον σφυροκόπησε πλήττοντας την αξιοπιστία του σχετικά με υποκριτικές δηλώσεις για τη NAFTA (Βορειοαμερικανική Συμφωνία Ελεύθερου Εμπορίου). Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν να κερδίσει (2 προς 1) τους αναποφάσιστους ψηφοφόρους που στήριξαν τον Ομπάμα στις 11 συνεχόμενες νίκες του το προηγούμενο διάστημα. Το επιτελείο της Χίλαρι διαφημίζει ότι κέρδισε τις πιο σημαντικές πολιτείες, που είναι κρίσιμες για τις εκλογές της 4ης Νοεμβρίου, και εκτιμά ότι ήρθε η ώρα να πάρουν με το μέρος τους τους βαρόνους των Δημοκρατικών, υποστηρίζοντας ότι δεν μπορούν να βασιστούν στον Ομπάμα. Επίσης, έκανε σαφές ότι θα ανεβάσει τους τόνους για ακόμη μια διαδικαστική μάχη: να μετρηθούν τελικά οι ψήφοι και οι εκλέκτορες στις πολιτείες Φλόριντα και Μίσιγκαν, που είχαν αποκλειστεί λόγω αντικομματικής συμπεριφοράς. Ο μόνος τρόπος για να ανακοπεί η φόρα της Κλίντον είναι ένα μπλοκ υπερ-εκλεκτόρων να της δείξει τον δρόμο προς την έξοδο για να διαφυλαχτεί η ενότητα του κόμματος. Ομως, το επιτελείο της έχει διαφορετικές επιδιώξεις. «Υστερα από 37 προκριματικές εκλογές και με τη συμμετοχή 22 εκατ. πολιτών, η αναμέτρηση είναι στην κόψη του ξυραφιού», δήλωσε ο υπεύθυνος επικοινωνίας της Χίλαρι, Χάουαρντ Γούλφσον. «Η καμπάνια του Ομπάμα πρέπει να σταματήσει να επιδιώκει να τελειώσει η κούρσα στη μέση». *Πάντως, ο φόβος ότι ο υποψήφιος των Ρεπουμπλικάνων, Τζον ΜακΚέιν, που αναζητά χρήματα και έναν σεβαστό αντιπρόεδρο (φαβορί είναι και ο ελληνοκύπριος κυβερνήτης της Φλόριντα, Τσαρλς Κριστ), θα έχει 8 ολόκληρους μήνες πριν από τις εκλογές να μεταφέρει στην κοινή γνώμη τα μηνύματά του είναι υπαρκτός.

'Independent' Kosovo: A threat, not a country

Abraham Lincoln was fond of asking the rhetorical question: "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Five? No, calling a tail a leg don't make it a leg." That pretty much sums up the recent unilateral declaration of independence by Albanian Muslims in the Serbian province of Kosovo. Several countries, disgracefully led by the United States, have recognized Kosovo. Major media have hailed creation of the "world's newest country." But calling Kosovo a country doesn't make it one. Serbia has denounced the move as the illegal creation of a "separatist entity" on its sovereign territory and has handed down criminal indictments against several of the top Albanian Muslim leaders. Now under way is a sharp global competition to see which governments will recognize Kosovo and which will not. Under heavy pressure from the U.S.
State Department, most European countries will meekly comply. Some, like Cyprus with its Turkish-occupied north and Spain with its Basque separatist movement, will not. In short, an action State Department bureaucrats touted as "settling Kosovo's status" has resulted in anything but. Outside of Europe, the picture is even fuzzier. Russia will reject Kosovo's independence, and expected to take the same line are China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil and many others. Russia will veto any effort to extend Kosovo membership in the United Nations. Any sovereign state with restive ethnic or religious minorities would recognize Kosovo at its own peril. What Washington seeks to inflict on Serbia today could be the fate of the American southwest tomorrow. Israel, in particular, is closely pondering its next move. Ellopia Press Page 8
While loath to anger Washington, Jerusalem must consider that a Kosovo precedent could, absent any negotiated agreement, prompt proclamation of a Palestinian state, to be recognized by Arab and Muslim regimes. The same precedent could apply to heavily Muslim areas such as Galilee and the Negev within Israel's formal borders. At a special press briefing, outgoing Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who is often mentioned as a possible secretary of state under a Democratic administration â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hailed support for Kosovo from the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Muslim governments. Happily claiming that a "vastly majority Muslim state" has been carved out of Serbia, a European Christian country, Burns said: "We think it is a very positive step that this Muslim state, Muslim majority state, has been created today."

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney: 5 YEARS OF IRAQ WAR Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Vice Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, issued a statement on the five year anniversary of the Iraq War, calling attention to the enormous economic and budgetary costs of the war. At Vice Chair Maloney’s request, the Joint Economic Committee released a report in November entitled, “War at Any Cost? The Total Economic Cost of the War Beyond the Federal Budget,” and in February, held its first hearing on the economic costs of the Iraq War: “By every measure, this war has cost Americans far too much - whether it’s lives lost, dollars spent, or our reputation tarnished around the world. There is no question - our soldiers and marines have performed magnificently under the most adverse circumstances. Unfortunately, there is also no question that the President has mortgaged the futures of our children and grandchildren to pay for this war. “Over the past five years, the President has requested some $665 billion from Congress to fund the war in Iraq. The more than $180 billion that the President wants the government to spend on Iraq just this year, including interest on the war debt,

totals almost half a billion dollars a day. “The untold story – one every American needs to hear – is that the costs of this war go well beyond these budget numbers. At my request, the Joint Economic Committee prepared a report showing that if the President's 2008 funding request is approved, the full economic cost of the war will total $1.3 trillion just by the end of the year. This figure includes the “hidden costs” of deficit financing, the future care of our wounded veterans, and disruption in oil markets. And if the war continues, these costs will only grow. “The numbers may feel abstract, but the costs are real. The burden of war debt handed down to our children is real – it’s been called the Iraq 100-year mortgage. The lost opportunities to invest here at home in jobs, green technologies, roads and bridges, health care and education are real. And, the nearly 4,000 lives lost are real. “Thanks to the President’s policies, we are now a nation of debtors, relying on the rest of the world to finance our budget deficits and the costly war in Iraq. What’s more, we have heard no plans for lessening the enormous fiscal and economic drain created by the mismanaged war in Iraq. It’s time for a new direction in Iraq.”

'Independent' Kosovo: A threat not a country Burns' remarks reflect a desperate hope by the Bush administration that displays of American proIslamic favoritism in the Balkans and support for a Palestinian state (its domination by Hamas notwithstanding) will buy the good will of hostile devotees of the "religion of peace and tolerance." Their gratitude is manifest in the jihad terror plot to attack Fort Dix, N.J., where four of the six defendants are Albanian Muslims from the Kosovo region. The offenders' presence in the United States – three of them illegal aliens and one brought to the U.S. by the Clinton administration as a refugee, another example of "gratitude" – stems from the fact that a broadly based support network for the terrorist "Kosovo Liberation Army," KLA, has been allowed to operate with impunity in the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area, raising funds and collecting weapons, not to mention peddling influence with American politicians. Meanwhile, Christian Serbs in Kosovo are bracing for the worst. "We are all expecting something difficult and horrible," said Bishop Artemije, pastor of Kosovo's Orthodox Christians. "Our message to you, all Serbs in Kosovo, is to remain in your homes and around your monasteries, regardless of what God allows or our enemies do." Over 150 churches and monasteries have been destroyed, with crosses and icons of Christ attracting particular vandalistic rage, a testament to Kosovo Albanians' supposed secularism and proWestern orientation. Hundreds of new Saudi-funded mosques fomenting the extreme Wahhabi doctrine have sprung up. Kosovo is visibly morphing from part of Europe into part of the Middle East. In contrast to Under Secretary Burns' cheerleading, former U.S. Ambassador to the
U.N. John Bolton has warned: "Kosovo will be a weak state susceptible to radical Islamist influence from outside the region, with the support from some Albanians, in other words, a potential gate for radicalism to enter Europe." If allowed to consolidate, an independent Kosovo would become a way station toward an antiAmerican, anti-Israel, anti-Christian "Eurabia." What will happen now in Kosovo? It would be up to the KLA and their supporters to decide whether to kick off a new cycle of violence by attacking Serbs who refuse to submit to their "authority." Serbia in fact has been beefing up its legitimate state institutions in areas where Serbs are concentrated, which the Albanians have threatened to shut down as – believe it or not – illegal separatist structures. We will see if the political violence unleashed by the act of recognition will be matched by physical violence on the ground. Meanwhile, Serbia will undertake undisclosed countermeasures to undermine the illegally declared KLA- and Mafia-ruled entity and force resumption of negotiations to achieve a valid settlement. Let us hope they succeed. With a stoke of his pen, President Bush, by heeding the State Department's bad advice to recognize a supposedly independent Kosovo, has triggered the perfect international storm: shattering the principle of the territorial integrity of sovereign nations, encouraging violent separatists worldwide, provoking a needless confrontation with Russia and other countries, boosting the jihad terrorist and organized crime threat to Europe and America, and creating conditions for a human rights and religious freedom nightmare. In terms of far-reaching consequences, it may the worst blunder of his presidency. Which is saying a lot.

Now he did state that Greece plays a very important role in the Balkans and that his country looks forward to a closer cooperation (?) with Athens in this region. So far as Skopje, his take on the name issue was that his country is encouraging both sides to find a mutually acceptable solution. Yeah? Also Speckhard made “a favorable reference to the presence of the Greek delegation under Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis in the recent Annapolis Conference. As for the issue of the visa required by Greek citizens on their entry to the United States, he said that considerable steps have been taken by Greece and that the visa waiver program might be implemented by the end of 2008. Shall we take him and Nimitz on face value after the Kosovo fiasco?.... Second generation Cypriot-American Floridian Charlie Crist has been the Governor of his state for no more than a year, but he’s been already dubbed the People’s Governor and he may also be on Republican front-runner McCain’s short list of Vice President. Well, it’s about time another Hellene makes it up there, for it’s been too long since Agnew’s days. The advantage
here is that Crist will also be the first Greek Orthodox to occupy this office-if he does- since Spiro Agnew was a Methodist, his father Ted having converted when he married. CNN carried on February 28th an interview John Zerellis conducted with Governor Crist in which the Governor who showed him among other things his pool which is heated by solar power… Two young Hellenes, 21-year-old Danae Tezapsidou and 32-yearold Vassilis Mesitidis, are among the 12-member team of cyclists from nations such as Poland, Lithuania, Italy and the United States - who are currently attempting a bike ride from ancient Olympia to Beijing via the so-called "silk road" highlighting the 2008 Olympic Games in China. The ride began at ancient Olympia on Wednesday 2/20 and hope to arrive in the Chinese capital by August 8, the day when the Beijing Olympics begin, after crossing over a distance of some 12,000 kilometers. The team will pass through Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and a good part of China……. Hey, have you heard of Jane? No I don’t mean Hanoi Jane. This beautiful Greek American’s last name is Mitakides and she’s running for Congress from a district which can be considered a true “swing” district from Ohio’s third District. Ιδιαιτερότητα της βραδιάς ήταν η συμμετοχή του ταλαντούχου ελληνοκύπριου τραγουδιστή απο την Ελλάδα Δώρου Δημοσθένους ο οποίος ερμήνευσε με μοναδικό τρόπο τα παραδοσιακά τραγούδια της Κύπρου, αλλά και τα τραγούδια του Πόλυ Κυριάκου, Κερύνεια και Κύπρος Νύν Και Αεί, προκαλώντας ιδιαίτερη συγκίνηση με την ερμηνεία του. Ιδιαίτερα συγκινητική και ξεχωριστή ήταν και η ερμηνεία του Γιώργου Κολλιά τόσο στα παραδοσιακά, όσο και στα έντεχνα τραγούδια του Πόλυ Κυριάκου, Απουσία, Αφροδίτη και Μανά, καθώς και στο δικό του τραγούδι Αμμοχωσμένη που είναι αφιερωμένο στην κατεχόμενη Αμμόχωστο.

Όταν άκουσα για πρώτη φορά τη λέξη Απόκριες, ως κουφάλογο, κατάλαβα Απόγριες. Σκέφτηκα λοιπόν ότι οι Απόγριες είναι ένα τάγμα, ένας λόχος, μια διμοιρία τέλος πάντων που αποτελείται από γριές, μοχθηρές και καταχθόνιες, οι οποίες χωρίς ιδιαίτερη πρόκληση και αφορμή, επιτίθενται συγκεκριμένο μήνα του χρόνου, προκαλώντας αλαλαγμούς στα πλήθη των ετεροδημοτών και όχι μόνο. Το διάστημα της επίθεσης, παρατηρούσα πως ο κόσμος μεταμφιεζόταν, για να μην τον αναγνωρίσουν οι Απόγριες και τον μεταφέρουν στο Γριαντανάμο- με Γκουαντανάμο γωνία, μαζί με τις αποσυρμένες μασέλες. Νέοι, γέροι και παιδιά, φίλοι κι αδέρφια, σύντροφοι και συντρόφισσες, εφευρίσκαν κάθε χρόνο απίστευτες μεταμφιέσεις για να ξεγελάσουν τις δαιμονισμένες Απόγριες. Και εντυπωσιαζόμουν καθώς οι μεταμφιέσεις κάναν πολύ καλή δουλειά, γιατί με την οπισθοχώρηση των Απογριών, όλοι ήταν στη θέση τους χαμογελαστοί και αφορολόγητοι. Και τα χρόνια περνούσαν και τις Απόγριες κρυβόμουν σε μια γωνιά του αχυρώνα, μαζί με τη Λώρα, στο μικρό σπίτι στο Λιβάδι. Πότε έκανα το κομοδίνο, πότε ντυνόμουν γραμματόσημο, πότε σερβιέτα με
φτερά, πότε χωρίς. Ποτέ μα ποτέ δεν με εντοπίσαν οι Απόγριες, παρότι έτρεμα από το φόβο μου σαν δονητής ιμιτασιόν, που του τελειώνουν οι μπαταρίες και χτυπιέται σαν ψάρι έξω από το νερό, βγαίνει από την εξώπορτα στο πεζοδρόμιο και σε κάνει ρεζίλι σ’ όλον τον κόσμο. «Άνοιξε το Τριώδιο» ήταν η φράση που προανήγγειλε την έλευση των Απόγριων και όλως παραδόξως αντί να σπέρνει τον τρόμο, όλοι χαμογελούσαν περίεργα- ξέραν ότι και πάλι θα ξεφύγουν; Δε ρώτησα ποτέ, αλλά φανταζόμουν πως το τριώδιο είναι μια μορφή διοδίων αυξημένη κατά 50% που πληρώνουν οι Απόγριες με την κάθοδό τους στην πολύπαθη πατρίδα μου, αν και πουθενά δεν είχα εντοπίσει κάποιο βαν της υπηρεσίας τους. Μια φoρά τόλμησα να πάω στη Μονή Λαζαριστών, όπου ήταν ακόμα κάποιες καλόγριες που ξεβουλώναν
και τα αυτιά, σκεφτόμενος πως θα ήταν το μόνο σώμα πεζικού που θα μπορούσε να αντιμετωπίσει τις Απόγριες. Έφαγα μια χριστιανική φάπα και κατάλαβα πως έπρεπε να τις αντιμετωπίσω μόνος μου. Πέρασα πολλά τριώδια, πότε στο αεροδρόμιο, πότε στα ΚΤΕΛ, πότε στο λιμάνι, περιμένοντας να τις δω να έρχονται και να οργανώσω την άμυνα του πλανήτη. Τίποτα. Τα χρόνια κύλησαν κι είχα καρτέρι στο σταθμό των τρένων. Ξαφνικά φάνηκε μια Απόγρια με μια βαλίτσα, ένα τεράστιο καπέλο και μια σκούπα. Ανατρίχιασα. Κοίταξε δεξιά κι αριστερά και έβγαλε μια τσιρίδα. Έτρεξε καταπάνω σε έναν νεαρό δύστυχο και όρμησε στα μούτρα του. Τα γόνατά μου κόπηκαν. Ώστε είναι αλήθεια. Έτρεξα καταπάνω της, με αυταπάρνηση και απαράμιλλο θάρρος, ενώ ο νεαρός, αντιστεκόμενος, τη χούφτωνε ποικιλοτρόπως. Την άρπαξα από τα μαλλιά και την πέταξα κάτω. «Ζήτω η Ελλάς» αναφώνησα και έφαγα μια γροθιά χωρίς προκαταβολή «Τι κάνεις με τη γυναίκα μου ρε μα….»Όπως μου εξήγησαν στο πλησιέστερο αστυνομικό τμήμα, τις μέρες αυτές τις λέμε Απόκριες και μεταμφιεζόμαστε για να κάνουμε πλάκα. Γέλασα- δήθεν- με τον εαυτό μου, με το ένα δόντι που μου είχε απομείνει και βγήκα έξω. Ο κόσμος γυρνούσε ακόμα μεταμφιεσμένος. Ένα καινούργιο ερώτημα άρχισε να σχηματίζεται στο κεφάλι μου. «Είναι οι Απόγριες εξωγήινοι που εποφθαλμιούν τον πλανήτη;» και άρχισα να κοιτώ ψηλά για τυχόν ετοιμοπαράδοτα διαστημόπλοια…

Cyprus reunification can bring huge economic benefits A solution to the decades-old Cyprus problem will not only reunite the divided island, but also bring at least 1.8 billion euro every year in new business with Turkey and other opportunities, according to an academic report released on Thursday. The report, entitled "The day after: Commercial opportunities following a solution to the Cyprus problem," was based on a research sponsored by the International Peace Research Institute in Norway. A group of Greek and Turkish Cypriot researchers conducted the survey. According to their calculations, the reunification of Cyprus would bring each Cypriot family a dividend of 5,500 euro per year in the first seven years. Such a solution will especially bring benefits for tourism, construction, university education sectors, finance and legal service and trade companies. Trade in goods and services with Turkey is expected to boom. "A just settlement will mean increased security for the people of Cyprus, greater stability for the region, increase in trade and provision of services, the creation of conditions that will allow culture and art to flourish, and the emergence of Cyprus as a model of peaceful coexistence in a world riven by division,"
said Michael Moller, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative to Cyprus. He added that the research "makes an extremely valuable contribution to discussion about the future of the island." Cyprus was divided in 1974 when the Turkey militarily intervened and occupied the north of Cyprus following a coup by a group of Greek officers, who pushed for a quick union with Greece. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared breakaway from Cyprus and set up "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is only recognized by Turkey. Ankara does not recognize the government of Cyprus Republic, which only controls the Greek Cypriot south. The isolated north has to trade with other parts of the world through Turkey, with the economy depending heavily on financial aids from Ankara. Expectations seem very high recently as both the newly elected Greek Cypriot president and Turkish Cypriot leader have agreed to meet very soon to revive the stalled reunification process.

NEW YORK STORIES The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey boosts the cost of crossing at bridges and tunnels starting Sunday. That includes the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, the Goethals Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing and the Bayonne Bridge. It will cost $8 for cars to pass during peak hours. The toll increase will generate $300 million a year. We Greek Americans feel being mocked and betrayed by the Greek government and indeed by the Greek Parliament as a whole, and their Party representatives in the EU. The Greek government cannot expect our help to get signatures and cosponsors for the resolution 356 in U.S. Congress, when at the same time their own EU deputies express only their regret about certain issues in the EU resolution, and then they vote for it, except for Samaras and a few others. What has especially bothered us besides the acceptance of "Macedonian" passports is the fact that they state that the name issue is irrelevant to the FYROM's membership into the EU. Foreign Minister Bakoyanni's claims success in the elimination of several articles negative to Greece's concerns. However, overall, there were tremendous gains by FYROM. We are reminded of an old socio-psychological trick that was used to deal with inflation in the '20 and '30's. Here is an example about raising the price of an egg from DM 1.00 to DM 3.00. A couple of weeks before they wanted to raise the prices, the Nazis leaked disinformation that the price of an egg will go from DM 1.00 to DM 7.00. People of course started worrying, talking to the officials and begged them
to think about it, until one day the price went up to the originally planned price of DM 3.00. Then, the people of Germany felt blessed that the government listened to them and it did not raise the price to
DM 7.00. After all, DM 3.00 was better than DM 7.00. Regarding the Name Issue, the world knows that Greece allegedly "vehemently" opposes to the name "Republic of Macedonia." Foreign Minister Bakoyanni stated again that the "Republic of Macedonia" will not enter the NATO or the EU. Everyone's attention concentrates on the name "Republic of Macedonia". However, no one has thought that the plan is that Skopje will get into the NATO and EU under the name "The FYROM" and the name issue will be history. The cost of increased security measures for all Port Authority facilities has totaled more than $3.7 billion since Sept. 11, 2001, and $650 million is spent annually on these programs. Money is also being allocated to nearly $30 billion in long-term capital investments to rehabilitate and modernize agency facilities, ease congestion and reduce overcrowding.
"Republic of Macedonia" will not enter NATO or EU, and when Skopje gets as The FYROM, the people will say "at least, it did not get as 'Macedonia'." The Greek government will claim "victory" but of course it is really a truckload of horse manure. Once Skopje is in under the name The FYROM, Skopje will NEVER change its name and Greece will be humiliated and demoralized. The Greek government MUST say CLEARLY that even the FYROM will not get into the NATO or EU? Many here feel that the Greek government and the official opposition have already given the name to Skopje and the only thing they care about is that Skopje does not show their victory so blatantly by naming airports, etc. They should wait to do it after they get it officially. If this is true, we GreekAmericans will be ashamed or our Greek origin. If this is not true, we need to see a strong indication NOW from YOU, the Greek Government, that Skopjes' accession to NATO will be obstructed even with the name of FYROM and will be allowed only with a mutually acceptable name that does not contain our name "Macedonia". Μπλόγκερς και πράσσειν άλογα Γράφει ο Στράτος Δουκάκης
Την τελευταία εβδομάδα, ένα άλλο μεγάλο και πρωτότυπο θέμα ξέσπασε ξαφνικά, ήλθε και στριμώχτηκε κι αυτό ανάμεσα στο Σκοπιανό, στο Κόσοβο, στο ασφαλιστικό και στην «ξεπλυμένη» πια υπόθεση Ζαχόπουλου. Το θέμα των blogs και των bloggers. Καθότι blogger κι εγώ μιας άλλης κατηγορίας φυσικά, παρακολούθησα με ενδιαφέρον, όπως όλοι μας φαντάζομαι, τις εξελίξεις για πολλούς λόγους. Το blogging (άλλο παράγωγο και τούτο) είναι η ιδέα που, μα την αλήθεια, αναζωογόνησε το ίντερνετ και το μετέτρεψε σε μέσο έκφρασης πολλών. Θεωρείται και είναι ένα ελεύθερο πολυσυλλεκτικό εργαλείο, που ευαισθητοποιεί, προωθεί τον διάλογο, δίνει διέξοδο στη σκέψη, διευρύνει την πληροφόρηση, είναι, με λίγα λόγια, μια ευλογία για τη δημοκρατία μας! Ένα φαινόμενο που εξελίσσεται με ιλιγγιώδη ταχύτητα και μας παρασύρει στο διάβα του. Όσοι το έχουν δοκιμάσει συνειδητοποίησαν πόσο γοητευτική και ενδιαφέρουσα διαδικασία είναι. Μεταβάλλεται όμως, λόγω έλλειψης φραγμών και συνόρων, σε άκρως επικίνδυνο όταν η ελευθερία του λόγου και της σκέψης, που, τόσο απλόχερα, προσφέρει το διαδίκτυο, γίνεται συκοφαντία, κακοήθεια και προσβολή. Κι όταν κάποιοι, μέσα στη σύγχυσή τους, έχουν μπερδέψει την ελευθερία με την αναρχία, όταν ξεχνούν τα θεμελιώδη στοιχεία της δημοκρατίας ότι τα δικαιώματα συνοδεύονται από υποχρεώσεις, τότε
είναι που αναδεικνύονται τα ρημάδια τα προβλήματα της υπερβολικής ελευθερίας. Οπωσδήποτε το διαδίκτυο, που θεωρείται ως η «μεγαλύτερη δημοκρατική κατάκτηση στην Ιστορία», έχει ανοίξει καινούριες προοπτικές και δυνατότητες, προσφέρει ταχύτητα, φτηνή πρόσβαση, άμεση ανταπόκριση και επικοινωνία, τα δε μπλογκ, δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο από μία σύγχρονη μορφή ατομικής έκφρασης στα νέα επικοινωνιακά μονοπάτια του. Παρέχουν το δικαίωμα
σε όλους, αν το θέλουν, να είναι εκδότες του εαυτού τους. Είναι, αναμφίβολα δικαίωμα του κάθε πολίτη να εκφράζει τη σκέψη του, τις απόψεις του και να συμμετέχει σε οποιασδήποτε μορφής συζήτηση. Να κρίνει, να επικρίνει, να συμφωνεί, να διαφωνεί, να πείθει και να πείθεται. Δεν είναι όμως δικαίωμα, κάνοντας χρήση αυτού του εργαλείου, να κάνει κατάχρηση των δημοκρατικών ελευθεριών του, να αυθαδιάζει και να κρύβεται πίσω από την προστατευτική ασπίδα της ανωνυμίας. Κι όταν το blogging, το πλέον σύγχρονο μέσο έκφρασης και επικοινωνίας, της ελεύθερης άποψης και της αλήθειας γίνεται ένα μ’ αυτό της συκοφαντίας, της παρακμής, ή ακόμα και της όποιας εξυπηρέτησης συμφερόντων Ellopia Press Page 21
αμαυρώνει το ρόλο και τη σημασία του διαλόγου. Υπάρχει μεγάλη διαφορά ανάμεσα στα διάφορα μπλογκ, αν κι έχουν την ίδια ελευθερία όλα κι αν κάνουν χρήση των ίδιων δικαιωμάτων, διαφέρουν στα κίνητρα. «Στα μπλογκ βρίσκεις διαμάντια και στάχτες. Βρίσκεις σοβαρούς και υπεύθυνους μπλόγκερ, ανεξαρτήτως αν είναι επώνυμοι ή ανώνυμοι· βρίσκεις και ανεύθυνους, κίτρινους και χυδαίους: καθρέφτης της κοινωνίας είναι κι αυτή η μορφή επικοινωνίας, αυτή η πλατφόρμα έκφρασης», όπως καταθέτει ο κ. Νίκος Ξυδάκης σε άρθρο του στην «Καθημερινή της Κυριακής». Οι μπλόγκερ δημοσιογράφοι, όμως, έστω και ερασιτέχνες, θα έπρεπε να διαθέτουν και να χρησιμοποιούν έναν κώδικα δεοντολογίας και ηθικής, παρόμοιο με αυτό της παραδοσιακής δημοσιογραφίας, ώστε το μέσον τους να έχει το κύρος που αρμόζει. Όταν όμως, αναρτήσεις κειμένων και σχολίων, όπως η πλειοψηφία αυτών που εμφανίζονται στο press-gr, είναι υβριστικά και συκοφαντικά και ρίχνουν ανελέητα λάσπη εναντίον συγκεκριμένων προσώπων ή επιδίδονται σε κατηγορίες που δεν στοιχειοθετούνται, δεν διασταυρώνονται, δεν υπογράφονται, τότε τα ανυπόγραφα αυτά κείμενα, κατά τη γνώμη μου, είναι αναξιόπιστα και αυτομάτως ακυρώνονται από την ίδια την ανωνυμία τους. Η ανωνυμία είναι δικαίωμα του blogger, ναι, στο βαθμό όμως που δεν παραβιάζει τους νόμους. Θεωρώ πως όποιος γράφει κάτι που έχει δημόσιο ενδιαφέρον και καταγγέλλει πρόσωπα πρέπει να το κάνει επώνυμα. Congress Honors Greek Independence Day The House and the Senate last week unanimously passed H.Res. 1024 and S.Res. 476 to honor Greek Independence Day. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) sponsored H.Res. 1024 with 35 original co-sponsors. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) sponsored the Senate version, S.Res. 476. It was cosponsored by 54 Senators, including Democratic Presidential Candidates Barack Obama (D-IL), and Hilary Clinton (D-NY). “A steadfast ally and close friend of the United States, Greece has helped usher in a new era of stability and development in the Balkans,” said Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee in introducing the Resolution. H.Res. 1024 extends warm con-
gratulations and best wishes to the people of Greece as they celebrate the 187th anniversary of the inde-
pendence of Greece. Demetris Christofias: The New President of Cyprus
text of the address before the House of Representatives
..My election to the Presidency of the Republic brings to a close the tenure of my presidency in the House of Representatives that started in May 2001. Seven years elapsed since then. Fruitful years for the House of Representatives. From the rich and multi-faceted work of the House during all these years, I would single out its contribution in the collective and gigantic effort – of the state and of the political leadership, of the organized groups and of the people – to bring about the harmonization of the Republic of Cyprus with the european acquis and to make Cyprus a member state of the European Union, on 1 May 2004. Another aspect of the activities of the Cyprus House of Representatives that I wish to mention is the strengthening of parliamentary diplomacy and the activities for the promotion of the Cyprus problem internationally. Culture, Arts and Letters were an important part of the overall work of the House during this period, a development I feel particularly proud of. From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank all the political forces that contributed to produce the rich parliamentary work during this period. I would like to thank the directors, the officers and the House personnel for their decisive contribution in the -grading of the parliamentary and legislative work. I wish them all strength and smooth continuity in their endeavors. I run for the Presidency of the Republic inspired by a life-long vision: The achievement of a just solution to the Cyprus problem and the building of a fairer society. This vision is evident throughout my government programme, which constitutes the beacon and compass of my presidency. I will do my utmost and work very hard to implement
my commitments to the people, along with the Council of Ministers that I will appoint. My government programme is a contract of honour with the people which I will fully honour. The principal concern and duty of our Presidency is the solution of the Cyprus problem. I have repeatedly stated during the pre-election period and I state it again now: The solution of the Cyprus problem is the main reason I took the decision to run for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus. The solution of the Cyprus problem will be the top priority of my government. The aim of our Presidency is to achieve a just, viable and functional solution that will terminate the occupation and colonization of our country. A solution that will restore the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity of the Republic of Cyprus and will exclude any rights for military intervention in the internal affairs of our country by foreign powers. A solution which will reunite the territory, the people, the institutions and the economy of our country in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, as provided for in the Makarios – Denktash high-level agreement of 1977 and the Kyprianou – Denktash high-level agreement of 1979. We demand that the solution will restore and safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians and Latins, including the right of return and the right to property for the refugees. We demand that the solution will provide for the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops and the demilitarization of the Republic of Cyprus. The ultimate goal remains the demilitarization of all of Cyprus. We support consistently the political equality
of the two communities in the framework of a federation, as this is defined in the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. The Cyprus problem remains unresolved for thirty four years now despite the many efforts that have been made from time to time. The problem has not been solved due to Turkey’s refusal to accept a solution that would be to the benefit of the people of Cyprus. I firmly believe that the time has come for the problem to be solved in a just, viable and functional way and for the principles of international law to be restored; principles that Turkey violates through the invasion in carried out in 1974 and through the occupation of a large part of our homeland. Cyprus can do better. That is why I will give emphasis and ensure that the island will be turned into a centre for education, health and provision of services, in line with the commitments I have undertaken in my programme. Our care and concern for all social groups should be taken for granted. However, I would like to make special reference to the youth of Cyprus. The younger generation deserves to have its own dynamic role in the civic life of our country. Through all our policies we have a duty to give opportunities to young people to show their capabilities and ensure their substantial participation in our society. Our vision for a secure Cyprus in the European family of peace and cooperation is the vision of young people. Social sensitivity, solidarity and response to human suffering will constitute the strongest characteristics of my presidency. My personal history as well as that of the political movement where I come from constitute, I believe, a guarantee for an anthropocentric policy, which will aim at the continuous improvement of quality of life of the citizen.

25η Μαρτίου και Ομογένεια Γράφει η Aldona Tront Το αίσθημα που αναβιώνει κάθε χρονιά αυτήν την εποχή του χρόνου είναι μοναδικό και έχουν την τύχη να το μοιράζονται όσοι είναι Ελληνικής καταγωγής και γνωρίζουν τη διπλή σημασία της 25ης Μαρτίου για τον Ελληνισμό, τον εορτασμό δηλαδή της έναρξης της Επανάστασης για την απελευθέρωση του Έθνους το 1821 και τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου. Η μεγάλη σημασίας αυτή γιορτή μας υπενθυμίζει ακόμη τις κοινές αξίες που μας ενώνουν, την Ελευθερία, την Πίστη και την Πατρίδα. Είναι επίσης το μήνα Μάρτιο που καλωσορίζουμε τον ερχομό της Άνοιξης και μαζί την έναρξη της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, της ενσάρκωσης της εγκράτειας και της αυτογνωσίας μέσα από τη νηστεία που προηγείται του Πάσχα και που όλοι οι πιστοί καλούνται να σ υ μ μ ε τ ά σ χ ο υ ν . Η ιδιαίτερη σημασία των ιστορικών αγώνων των προγόνων μας έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι παραμένουν διαχρονικοί και αποτελούν σημείο αναφοράς για τους όλους τους Έλληνες. Με την επέτειο αυτή μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να νιώσουμε για άλλη μια φορά τυχεροί που ζούμε ελεύθεροι και που απολαμβάνουμε τα αγαθά που οι πρόγονοί μας πολέμησαν να εξασφαλίσουν για εμάς. Διότι δεν υπάρχει κάτι πολυτιμότερο από την ελευθερία.Η ιστορία των Ελλήνων μέσα από τους αιώνες μας έχει διδάξει ότι ακόμα και στους πιο σκοτεινούς καιρούς υπήρχε πάντοτε βαθιά η πίστη και η ελπίδα προς το θαύμα. Και η ακλόνητη αυτή πίστη είναι που οδήγησε τους Έλληνες να κατορθώσουν τα ακατόρθωτα, όσα ο κοινός νους θεωρεί πραγματικά αδύνατα νασυμ βούν. Παρ’όλους τους αιώνες καταδυνάστευσης, οι Έλληνες δεν υπέκυψαν στην υποδούλωση του Εθνικού Πνεύματος και δεν έχασαν ποτέ τη συνείδηση της ιστορικής τους μνήμης και αποστολής. Αντίθετα, κατόρθωσαν κάτι μοναδικό στην παγκόσμια ιστορία με το να διατηρήσουν ανέπαφη την Ελληνικότητα αυτού του λαού. Με την ευκαιρία του Εθνικού Εορτασμού
της 25ης Μαρτίου γιορτάζουμε όχι μόνο την αντίσταση των προγόνων μας και την απελευθέρωση του Έθνους από την υποδούλωση, αλλά και το γεγονός ότι είμαστε Έλληνες. Είναι προσόν να είσαι και να λέγεσαι Έλληνας και είναι σημαντικό να διατηρείς αυτό το προσόν με το να κρατάς ζωντανό και δυνατό το δεσμό με την Πατρίδα, τις αρχές και τις αξίες που διέπουν τον Ελληνισμό. Είναι οι ίδιες αξίες που διαιωνίζονται από αιώνα σε αιώνα και μπορούν μέσα σε τρεις λέξεις να συμπεριλάβουν το νόημα της Ελληνικότητας. Έλληνας σημαίνει να έχεις φιλότιμο, αρχοντιά και λεβεντιά. Και οι τρεις αυτές λέξεις δεν μπορούν να μεταφραστούν σε άλλη γλώσσα διότι χαρακτηρίζουν μονάχα τους Έλληνες. Το φιλότιμο χαρακτηρίζει αυτόν που υπερβαίνει τον εαυτό του και στηρίζει ανιδιοτελώς τον άλλον χωρίς να το έχει ζητήσει, προσφέροντάς του βοήθεια χωρίς ανταλλάγματα. Η λεβεντιά χαρακτηρίζει όποιον έχει μέσα του την υπερηφάνεια, την ανδρεία και τη τόλμη να υπερασπίζεται αυτό που πιστεύει και να αντιστέκεται στο άδικο. Τέλος, όταν κάποιος έχει αρχοντιά σημαίνει ότι έχει τη δύναμη να υπερβαίνει τις όποιες δυσκολίες με αξιοπρέπεια, και ταυτόχρονα να μοιράζεται με τον άλλον ανεξάρτητα από την οικονομική του κατάσταση. Τα τρία αυτά χαρακτηριστικά είναι που έλαμψαν στους αγωνιστές της Επανάστασης του 1821, αλλά και που συνεχίζουν να αποτελούν τον κοινό κώδικα συμπεριφοράς και νοοτροπίας των σημερινών Ελλήνων. Το να είσαι Έλληνας δεν είναι μόνο μια ιδέα. Έλληνα σε κάνουν η ψυχή και το φρόνημα, το φιλότιμο και η τιμιότητα, το αίσθημα υπερηφάνειας και η απαράμμιλη αγάπη για τον τόπο. Σήμερα, πρέπει να παλέψουμε για να είμαστε Έλληνες, αυτή είναι η σύγχρονη δοκιμασία του λαού μας, να κρατήσουμε ζωντανή την ταυτότητά μας. Για να διατηρηθούν το πνεύμα και οι αξίες της Ελληνικής κληρονομιάς ζωντανές και να συνεχίσουν να εξαπλώνονται, χρειάζεται προσήλωση και συμμετοχή από όλους μας για να παραμείνουμε αφοσιωμένοι στις ρίζες, τις οποίες οι Έλληνες έφεραν στην Αμερική.
Παρατηρούμε στις μέρες μας ότι η δίψα για διαρκή επαφή με την Ελληνική ταυτότητα είναι πιο έντονη από ποτέ άλλοτε και στην ανάγκη αυτή, η Ελληνική ποιοτική τηλεόραση έρχεται να προσφέρει ένα εξαιρετικό μέσο σύνδεσης με την Ελληνική πραγματικότητα. Η DIRECT TV τηλεόραση προσφέρει αυτήν την ευκαιρία σε όλους τους Έλληνες της ομογένειας με μοναδικά προγράμματα, τα οποία δίνουν μια αληθινή γεύση από Ελλάδα. Η διαφορά στην ποιότητα και την ποικιλία των εκπομπών είναι που ξεχωρίζουν τα προγράμματα αυτά και τα φέρνουν στην προτίμηση των Ελλήνων της ομογενειακής κοινότητας. Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε από τις καλύτερες και πιο αγαπημένες εκπομπές, όπως ο « Όμορφος Κόσμος το Πρωί »ι Mega Cosmos που μαζί με άλλες ψυχαγωγικές σειρές έχουν κερδίσει τις προτιμήσεις των θεατών Επιπλέον, ενημερωτικές εκπομπές από το κανάλι A SAT, όπως το « Καλημέρα Σας » με παρουσιαστή το Γιώργο Αυτιά και με καθημερινή κάλυψη ειδήσεων από την Ελλάδα και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο, αποτελούν έγκυρη και αντικειμενική πηγή ενημέρωσης για σημαντικά θέματα της επικαιρότητας. . Τέλος, το κανάλι GMTV, με επίκεντρο τη μουσική σκηνή στην Ελλάδα, φιλοξενεί τις πιο πρόσφατες μουσικές επιτυχίες, καθώς και ενδιαφέρουσες συζητήσεις για νέες ταινίες, καλλιτεχνικά δρώμενα και τελευταίες τάσεις της μόδας. Τα προγράμματα αυτά, ως έκφραση του σύγχρονου Ελληνικού Πολιτισμού, αποτελούν μέσα διατύπωσης και συνέχισης των αξιών που χαρακτηρίζουν και δένουν τους Έλληνες του τότε, του τώρα και του αύριο. Είναι επομένως, ιδανική ευκαιρία με τον εορτασμό και την υπενθύμηση της σημασίας της Εθνικής μας κληρονομιάς να ανοίξουμε την ψυχή μας στα συναισθήματα υπερηφάνειας που μοιράζονται όλοι οι Έλληνες και να συνδεθούμε περισσότερο με τα ζωτικά στοιχεία της Ιστορίας, του Πολιτισμού, της Γλώσσας και της Παράδοσης που αποτελούν την καρδιά του Ελληνισμού.
