Belonging to a samurai of the powerful Maeda clan, this helmet sports an unusaully large pair of stylized dear horms and three clan badges. With associated battle mask. Edo period, c. 1820 AD

ACC0612 Kote A samurai’s armored sleeves composed of iron plate and chain mail mounted on silk and hemp. Signed by the armorer Myochin Muneyoshi, a Jo Jo 1 ranked smith. A similar pair of armored sleeves and a cuirasse by Muneyoshi are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Holland. Edo Period, c. 1800 AD. Iron, leather, silk, hemp. 28 x 9 x 2 inches each


K1107 Kabuto and Menpo A heavy eight plate sujibachi kabuto (ridged battle helmet) with gilt fukurin, adorned with gold lacquered leather and emblazoned with shakudo alloy kiri mon (pawlonia leaves, inset) a symbol of nobility often conferred on samurai for acts of valor, with original matching menpo (battle mask). Made to order for a high ranking samurai from Kaga province. Edo Period, c. 1650 AD Iron, lacquer, silk, shakudo alloy, gilded leather 18 x 14 x 14 inches

A samurai battle helmet composed of 62 vertical iron plates riveted into a graceful head like form. Adorned with shinodare and the ume (plum blossom) mon associated with the Matsudaira clan. Atop the helmet a curling dragon emerges from a crescent moon. Edo Period, c. 1650 AD

D1104 Uchidashi Sendai Dou A spectacular embossed cuirasse sporting a frolicking shi-shi (budhist lion) and rickly adorned with gilded leather and floreate fittings. Published in Japanese Armor: The Galleno Collection, and possibly from the atelier of Myochin Muneakira Edo period, c. 1725 AD Iron, lacquer, silk, leather, copper, gilt 30 x 16 x 14 inches


G0811B Momonari Kabuto Tosei Gusoku A full, matching battle armor composed featuring a momonari (peach shaped) helmet with a deer antler crest, and textiles stencilled with a motif of crashing waves in indigo Edo period, c. 1850

G0406 Hotoke Dou Tosei Gusoku A complete Myochin school samurai armor, entirely of iron, featuring a very heavy hoshikabuto (helmet) with large standing rivets. The front and rear plates of the helmet are adorned with shinodare over copper plates incised with swirling clouds. The kuwagata (stylized dear horns) are pierced with kanji invoking the war god Bishamon. The hotoke (pidgeon breasted) cuirasse is studded with chrisanthumum headed rivets, and the fabric portions of the armor are of silk with dragons amidst swirling clouds. The kikyou (chinese bellflower) mon is associated with the powerful Hosokawa clan, lords of Kyoto. Displayed with an associated jinbaori (war coat) and goyoyo (epaulets) Edo period, c. 1780 AD Iron, lacquer, silk, copper, animal hair, stencilled doe skin 54 x 22 x 24 inches



G0511 Kaga School Tosei Gusoku Sumptuous battle armor of a samurai from wealthy Kaga province. The heavy twelve plate helmet and beautifully forged mask are in russet iron. Textured gold lacquer adorns many surfaces, while the yoke and breast plate are covered in gold lacquered elephant skin, most likely imported from South East Asia. An unusual

ikat dyed textile is used

throughout, and the helmet is adorned with Portugese trade leather lacquered gold. With original deer horn maedate and associated suneate.

G0505 Zaboshi kabuto tosei gusoku

A classic Haruta school armor with a spactacular 32 lame helmet studded with over four hundred zaboshi (decorative rivets). Finely carved and gilded wakidate (side crests) in the form of deer antlers invoke sacred shinto spirits. The interior of the armor is lacquered gold, and the kusazuri (tassets) are trimmed with bear fur. A classic armor of the Sengoku (warring states) period in an excellent state of preservation. G1013 Yoroi style Tosei Gusoku

An impressive samurai armor in the classic style of the Tale of Genji, composed of over 2,500 individual honkozone (true scales), bound together by hundreds of yards of orange silk and richly adorned with soft metal chrysanthemum decorations. The hoshi kabuto (standing rivet helmet) is surmounted by a dragon and large kuwagata (stylized deer horns, not pictured). Iron suneate (greaves), bear fur boots, and abumi (stirrups) complete this sumptuous armor belonging to an important samurai Edo - Meiji Period, c. 1890 AD

Featuring a heavy 56 plate helmet and ryubu men (mask in the style of a young man), the very heavy kote and suneate are inscribed with kata kiri (cat scratch pattern). Mostly composed of honkozone (true scales)

Samurai armor dating largely from the Muromachi period


this armor bears the triple tomoe mon associated with the Arima clan. Muromachi period, c. 1500 Iron, leather, lacquer, silk, animal hair, stencilled doe skin 52 x 24 x 24 inches


G0213 Imperial tosei

gusoku

A sumptuous armor bearing the chrysanthemum crest associated with Japanese nobility, this armor is composed of thousands of honkozane (true scales). The ferocious aspect of the ressei men is enhanced by cinabar red lacquer, while a sundisk is woven

into the lacing of the haidate (armor skirt). This armor is complete with its three original storage boxes with red leather covers emblazoned with gold chrysanthemums.

G0113 Uchidashi Tosei Gusoku A spectacular armor embossed throughout with reliefe images of dragons, butterflies, oni (demons), bonji (sanskrit characters), gourds, and buddhist wheels. The butterfly mon is associated with the powerful Ikeda clan. Edo period, c. 1750 AD Iron, leather, lacquer, silk, stencilled doeskin, bone, copper, gilt 56 x 22 x 22 inches
