WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG? Written and photographed by Elena Yeo

The bag which we always bring to school is like our personal mobile space. It stores our possessions, our gadgets and our junk and we end up dumping most of what we do in school into these nice portable spaces of ours. Perhaps what we keep in our bags and the combinations of things become distinctive to each of us, reflecting pretty much what we do in ADM, almost to the point of defining our own character.

Astrid’s bag is

PSYCHEDELICA

We had a look into Visual Communication Assisstant Professor, Astrid Almkhlaafy’s bag to see if the things she brings coincide with her colourful personality and it turns out that the things she has in her bag contribute to a colour palette pretty much similar to her fashion colours. Funky, exciting, cheerful and psychedelic!

INSIDE Astrid’s handcarry bag that is just as colourful as her personality!

01. Daily essentials: Things that has to be brought out including wallet, coin purse, her i-Touch, phone, camera and keys. 02. Lucky charms: Here are the emulets, stones and crystals that Astrid gained from all her trips to Beijing, Japan and Korea, little things that keeps her protected and in good shape. 03. Make-up and perfume: Come on, every lady needs a set of these in her bag! 04: Kaatje’s stuff: Sometimes some of her daughter’s things end up in her bag as well, including her necklace, clips, playcards and her drawings for Astrid. 05. Paper things: Astrid keeps books in her bag for reading, some old-school photos from the past with her friends, and a nice case to hold namecards and it says, “Helvetica is... Out of Style, Used on IRS Forms, Not Embedded...” the rest you can go see for yourself.

Michelle’s Bag is

A BAG OF CHAOS! Next up, we peek into 3rd Year Digital Filmmaking student, Michelle Cheong’s bag, to see what kind of stuffs has she thrown into that big bag of hers. A small and petite girl like her having to carry such a huge load tells alot about the amount of things film students needs to have around especially when they go for their crucial production shoots. Apart from the large amount of equipment that they have to check out, there are some essentials they need to have at hand. However in her bag also sits many random, strange things that pretty much sums up a whole bag of chaos, in her own words! Stuff toys, hammer, tapes, a cracking make-up set, gloves, loose paper... let’s have a look!

Michelle’s big Addidas book is from Japan and she got it for their multiple pockets and compartments where she can separate and put her things in.

01. Daily essentials: Things that has to be brought out including cigar-box/wallet, keys and her Blackberry that has really dated stickers pasted on it. 02. Books: She carries around a notebook, a production book which she is reading for production class and a “nonsense comic with violent and cool illustrations. 03. Randoms: Eye-patch for random efforts to improve her eyebags, a toy hammer because she loves random cheap stuffs. and some danglies of a skeleton doll and other smaller toys which she used to hang on her bag because things just go missing from it.

Charcoal and pencil for her Advanced Drawing module. 05. Film things: DV tape for shooting and digitizing, A cracking make-up kit which is useful for shoots when talents need makeup, An essay written for Production class which is just chucked into her bag, Pages of the equipment list for her 16mm shoot, Gloves to handle hot lights for shoots, White cloth to get a cleaner setting and to block things out. Masking and Gaffer tape, always useful! Wax, useful for male talents sometimes.

04: Stationery: Her macbook which also has alot of dated stickers pasted on it. A really huge and smelly pencilcase, comparable to the size of her mac.

Calvin’s Bag is

ESSENTIAL As we surveyed the bag of Year 4 Digital Animation student, Calvin Chua’s bag, though it looks big at first sight, the things inside are essential and just enough to get by a day schooling as an Animator. Unlike film, most of the work is done on the computer and hence he do not need to bring alot of equipment or things. Just sketchbooks, pencil, and some important things, Simple.

01. Daily essentials: Because Calvin is diebetic, he needs his glucose injections kit which he has to bring for daily dosage and a box of candy in case he needs get some glucose into his body. Unlike the previous ladies, guys place their wallets and phones in their pockets, not bag. 02. Somwhat essential: Things he brings along includes water bottle, umbrella, camera, thumbdrive, USB cable and a Buddhist manual which his mum insist that he brings along. 03. Animation-ish: All the animator needs is notebooks, sketching pen, graphite stick, pencil. 04. Randoms: Everyone has to have random things in their bags! In Calvin’s case, it is double-sided tape and a locker lock. Double-sided tape —He has some Viscomm blood in him.

Mobile space,

I think in that small little area or volume, we carry a bit of ourselves, means that you can see a person’s character or see who that person is based on what he carries and the things he leaves in his bag, for me I like to read thats why I have a book, and I’m quite untidy that’s why you see all these loose papers, I like music that why you see all these music stuffs in my bag.”

Tim’s Bag is

TECH-Y!

Everyone must have wondered what does Interactive Media students carry to school. The answer is: A book full of cool technological gadgets and devices. As we opened up Year 2 Interactive Media student, Timothy Tan’s pixelated army bag, we realized that he carries so many interesting devices which he uses for his IM projects, and which he refers to as being very geekish. However amidst all the wires and cables are also alot of other paper materials which he happily chucks inside without a file. With a touch of music, You get a cool tech-y bag.

INSIDE

01

Timothy got his bag at Chevrons, buying army stuff and this bag was the cheapest, at the price of $23 dollars with the colour that was least army-ish. He got it also because it was big enough to carry all his thing as for him, functionality comes first.

04

05 02

01. Daily essentials: His pencil bag and scissors and Apple Macbook Pro, which is, in his own words, the stereotypical laptop that everyone carries.

03

02. Papers without a file: He carries a heap of loose paper including his Asian Art History notes (the interview day was the day of their quiz), papers from his AR, Augmented reality, (last semester whereby the paper, when placed in front of the webcam, will detect the image and fold out into something on screen according to his own program), his Japanese spelling, schoolfees, and random receipts which he just chucks into his bag, all crumpled without a file.

05. IM things: That includes an Open-source hardware for IM which he can hook up to a USB port and do programming for his projects. Also a strange musical instrument used for sound distortion. 06. Music-related: (Not displayed here) He also has his guitar picks and his iPod which he cannot leave home without.

03. Books: He brings along a couple for reading and also being a Christian, he has his Campus Crusade booklets with him, in case he needs to preach. 04: Randoms: A birthday card given to him, and a booklet from his Animation History professor.

DON’T

PARK

IN MY

LOT A space that has always been left out of sight from the main building is the carpark space in ADM; grey, rectangular yet within the flourescent yellow markings parks some of the awesome rides belonging to our own ADM students and professors.

5

I remembered back in Year 1 where my friend and I sat in front of the carpark at 3am in the morning, pulled out our sketch books and started doing our foundation drawing homework. The reason why we ended up at the carpark was because we realized that it was the only space in ADM that had no curved lines and since we had to complete our homework on perspective drawing, choosing a building with straight lines was ideal.

Writtened, illustrated and photographed by Elena Yeo

6

Carpark space to me is something like an isolated space at the corner of ADM, which its grey floors, white pillars and parking lots bordered by flourescent yellow lines, with the loud generator howling and bombarding the space. However, to the driving community, the carpark may be something entirely different, it may be important and even special to them.

7

THE

DRIVING Community The driving community comprises of a specific small family of drivers who share the same common fact of sharing the carpark space. Within the carpark, there are some unsaid rules that all the drivers adhere to– specific lots that are always parked by a particular car, an unsaid or unplanned allocation of lots. The drivers whom I interviewed has a unanimous reaction that they do have particular lots which they are habited to parking and they do notice that most cars do the same as well. Sounds friendly, courteous and orderly as it seems. I went ahead to ask four different drivers and four distinctively different vehicles about their rides and their encounter and feelings towards this familiar space they all know, though foreign as it is to their other non-driver friends.

CARPARK

+

CAR 1. When you drive your car into the carpark, is there any particular lot that you always park in or prefer to park in? Yes! it’s the inner lane, the second-last lot. And yes, I’ve noticed that everyone seem to always park their car at a particular lot. like Jon’s car will always be there, mine’s parked there and others in their lots. And when someone takes my lot I guess i’ll just park somewhere else. 2. Are there any interesting things that you can say about the carpark? Other than its grey walls and yellow lines, any interesting stories? Once, I used to park at the one isolated lot near the entrance of the carpark and then I stopped parking there cause when they used to wash the top, it will drip stuff onto my car *weird look* and so I shifted to parking inside! Interesting thing happened outside when I parked at FarEast and then while going out, this taxi just reversed and bumped the front of my car and I was shocked! But then, the taxi just zoomed off! and so I just drove to park at Heeren’s carpark to check how the front and it was perfectly fine! (IT’S MAGIC!) 3. Other than a parking space, do you think the carpark space serves any other purpose? A place for smokers to smoke? Guess for film shoots. But it’s generally for parking cars. I mean it’s a carpark space.

4. Do you think it is a space that is completely removed from the main building of ADM, that ADMers seldom go? Yes, and I think that’s what I like about the space, that very little people go to the carpark and so it feels not as congested. Like it belongs to just the drivers, it’s a nice feeling. Sometimes we even leave messages for each other on our cars. I left a note for Priscilla (Year 3 Digital Filmmaking) before.

I try to park under the shelter since my vehicle is open soft top just in case it rains. Raining is not an issue but we prefer to keep it dry. No particular preference of lots for me. 2. Are there any interesting things that you can say about the carpark? Other than its grey walls and yellow lines, any interesting stories? Interestingly, more and more people are driving. It’s harder to find sheltered lots. Once, a card with a particular line from Futurist Manifesto was left on my windscreen... guess it was by some Visual Comm students perhaps but that’s by far the most interesting thing. 3. Other than a parking space, do you think the carpark space serves any other purpose? Ya, for people to leave the left over wood from Katsumi Mukai. 4. Do you think it is a space that is completely removed from the main building of ADM, that ADMers seldom go? I’d say it is a space that has a specific purpose that people go for. Not like our labs or studios that we just chill at. We come and we go so i guess its not likely ADMers go there often but yes its still part of ADM to me.

5. Is there anything that you like about the carpark space? Yes, that my Land Rover can clear it’s height limit. This is a very big issue when it comes to sheltered carparks for us.

BIKE 1. When you drive your car into the carpark, is there any particular lot that you always park in or prefer to park on? The thing is, there are too little lots in the carpark for bikes. there’s Ahzar, there’s me, Ining, Ya Ting and so it’s whether who gets them if not we’ll just park on the sides. If there is space of course I’ll park at the bike lots and the one nearest to the lift. The upper parking space is not used unless there’s no space below. 2. Are there any interesting things that you can say about the carpark? Other than its grey walls and yellow lines, any interesting stories? One car parked on two of the bike lots once like as if there’s enough bike lots and not enough car lots already, and then I took a photo and went to show the film people and when I showed Cindy, she told me it’s her car! Also, once the film people tried to be funny and went to carry my bike and hid it in the corner and so when I came down I couldn’t find my bike! There’s a time when the Sound Design Professor Vincent moved my bike up to Level1 lobby as well! *laughs* 3. Other than a parking space, do you think the carpark space serve any other purpose? WHAT. It’s just the carpark! It’s a space to park cars and thats all there is? err… people making out?... NO LA I’m just kidding, it’s just a space that’s all. there’s no emotional value to it.

4. Do you think it is a space that is completely removed from the main building of ADM, that ADMers seldom go? I guess it’s doing what it’s supposed to do in ADM and it’s still part of ADM.

VAN 1. When you drive your car into the carpark, is there any particular lot that you always park in or perfer to park in? Yes, it’s the few lots near the entrance of the carpark so it is easier to get out. From there, there’s one that i prefer, but it is usually taken up. 2. Are there any interesting things that you can say about the carpark? Other than its grey walls and yellow lines, any interesting stories? Nothing interesting, that’s precisely why it’s awesome. because it’s so serene there. nothing ever happens. people smoke there once in awhile but who gives a shit. 3. Other than a parking space, do you think the carpark space serves any other purpose? Erm... MAKIN’ OUT YO! *LAUGHS* 4. Do you think it is a space that is completely removed from the main building of ADM, that ADMers seldom go? It is seperate from ADM, and also, seperate from the rest of NTU. 5. Any thoughts about carpark space? Or your car as a space?

16 TOYATA_HIACE VEHICLE AGE: Since November 2008 TYPE: Van OWNER: Jonathan Liang, Foundation Year 1 LOT: ADM Carpark Lot 16 USAGE: Daily drive, helping Film students with their heavy equipment.

I think when you get into your car, for me, it’s my van, it’s a place where I can chill, almost like my personal space. When I drive my friends around in my van, and when they sit inside with music jamming, even for some of my friends who used to be very quiet by nature can sometimes end up singing loudly and going insane inside. It is as if the car can be a transformative space that is different from any other outside space.

It’s just the carpark! it’s a space to park cars and thats all there is. What do you expect, PEOPLE MAKING OUT? Haha, no la, I’m kidding! —Ghazali, Digital Film-making Year 2

Synecdoche, Me ‘Synecdoche, Me’ takes a look at existence, belonging and identity by looking at how we are defined by how we define “Others” and how “Others” in turn, define us. It is a journey of self-awareness that weaves in and out of the seams which hold “Me” together and the cords that connect us to larger constructs such as society, history, ethnicity, geography and mass media. Spaces within, beyond and between captured frames of our being are explored. This installation’s final form relied on the space within which it was built. It was originally designed to fit a smaller space, but due to unforeseen last minute circumstances, the layout had to be re-thought and planned to fill a larger expanse of gallery area.

“all really inhabited space bears

the essence of the

notion of home ” The Poetics of Space, —Gaston Bachelard

Deeper Spectacle into ADM Space Written by Elena Yeo

“Here space is everything, for time ceases to quicken memory. Memory what a strange thing it is!— does not record concrete duration… We are unable to relive duration that has been destroyed, We can only think of it, in the line of an abstract time that is deprived of all thickness.”

After reading the first chapters of the book, The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, I have gained insights of certain interesting concepts and thoughts in relation to space and house. From these thoughts, we can then relate our school, ADM, its building and its identity to that of a house, since most of us have treated it like our second home. To start off the article, here is a short introduction to the book, a comment found: Philosopher Gaston Bachelard wrote, “The house helps us say: I will be an inhabitant of the world, in spite of the world.” From the cellar to the attic, the book shows how our view of the house can shape our memories, thoughts, and dreams. Through the corridors, darkened corners, garrets and wardrobes, Bachelard constructs complex analogies between house and psyche, house and family structure, house and social environment, house and text, showing how a single intimate space can embody a universe. In his chapter, he discussed about the house and various elements that it contains, including

memories, thoughts, images and dreams. “Past, present and future give the house different dynamism which often interfere, at times opposing at others, stimulating one another.” “Here space is everything, for time ceases to quicken memory. Memory—what a strange thing it is!—does not record concrete duration… We are unable to relive duration that has been destroyed, We can only think of it, in the line of an abstract time that is deprived of all thickness.” As I read this section, I realized how true his words were, how certain memories are engraved into particular spaces yet the memories that we kept remains static as once it is being remembered, it is fixed, unchanged but recorded. And space exist together with time. These two entities co-exist, inseparable, intertwined. Space change with time and time has influenced the existence of the space. When it comes to ADM, the space remains like a constant with people streaming in and out of it along with time. We interact with the space, each individual with their own unique experience and from there, knit our memories together with the space. It is evident as we see

how people from the same major share their own library of jokes in relation to their spaces. It refers to how, after a long time of working together and sleeping sleepless night in the same space, students from Visual Communication start to give their particular “stay-up” group names like “Monday Night Gang” and how they start to have the same habits of ordering McDonald’s at 4am in the morning. It also applies to how the Film majors start going out for suppers from their Film-Editing labs, and how in their own labs, they establish their own working spaces and how they too, share common experiences together. Collectively, we start to build memories together in the space. It may be invisible, continuous action taking place all the time. Bachelard writes, “Memories are motionless, and the more securely they are fixed in space, the sounder they are”

“And all the spaces of our past moments of solitude, the spaces in which we have suffered from solitude, enjoyed, desired and compromised solitude, remain indelible within us, and precisely because the human being wants them to remain so. “ It is also particularly true for the space in ADM. It is no surprise that when submissions and deadlines draw near, we start to stay in school more and more and we are always in the company of others yet ultimately, we also are very individualistic in nature. As designers and artist, we do have our own separate schedule according to our own pace of completing our projects and in many instances, too, we are in solitude, doing our work. Photo majors can meet up together at certain timings to use the darkroom but many a times, due to differentiating timetables, they end up going to wash their photos at their own time. Animation students come to school in their own time to use their light boxes for their animations and while they are at work, they remain

composed, consumed in their own art-making surrounding. Therefore, many a times, we end up in solitude as well. The spaces in ADM then holds our moments of solitude as well, times when we stare at our Macintosh screens the whole day, and in our lonely moments, still interact and communicate with the space around us.

“The lamp in the window is the house’s eye and, in the kingdom of imagination, it is never lighted out-of-doors but is enclosed light. [From the poetry] a lamp is waiting in the window, and throughout it, the house, too is waiting, The lamp is a symbol of prolonged waiting. By means of the light in that far-off house, the house sees, keeps vigil, vigilantly waits” It is intriguing how that relates to ADM, which is a building that is perpetually open and lit up all night. The quotes do hold some truth about how the lamp becomes a symbol of waiting. As we go back to our ADM building at night for another round of working on our projects, as we walk towards the building, it stands dormant, lit up and prominent in the dark night, as if waiting for our return into its domain. In this way, it seems that the building too is waiting, yet with a welcoming connotation attached. The lobby and its doors waiting to be entered by the scanning of our matriculation cards. The idea of knowing that only students from ADM can enter the building in the night through their card also highlights a certain exclusiveness that we hold as students of the school. “He (the house) leads a dogged existence, whereas I am pursuing futile dreams. Through its light alone, the house becomes human. It sees like a man. It is an eye open to night.” The part of the quote that is interest-

ing is just the idea of us sometimes seemingly thinking if we are pursuing futile dreams in our four years here. University can be a place where one works towards his dreams yet in the end realizing that it might just come out to nothing. The last quote writes, “A house constitutes a body of images that give mankind proofs or illusions of stability. We are constantly re-imagining its reality: to distinguish all these images would be to describe the soul of the house” This ties back in with the idea of memory as well, in this context, the visual memory. As we continue our study in ADM, there are certain spaces and corners of the school which we take away with us, sometimes in the form of an image and a picture stored in our minds. It is part of the human capacity to retain images of places he has gone. It can be suggested that these images can also tie in to other elements like meaning, words, people. We relate certain spaces to certain people, certain words. The next page shows some spaces and quotes that people have come up in relation with the space. I hope this article have been enlightening and has allowed you to contitnue thinking about ADM space in a deeper spectacle.
