NOW BIG, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN ALSO HAS A BIG, BEAUTIFUL

heart!

In 2019, the way we see our homes will come from within: our need to reconnect, re-energize, feel safe and secure is a natural part of the design decision. Isn’t that comforting?

Bold, bright, and it really connects. Pantone Colour of the Year: Living Coral “In a time when so many of us are increasingly immersed in digital experiences that can be cold and isolating, Living Coral felt like an appealing shade of connection. There’s just something about the color that feels earthbound and welcoming, optimistic and intimate. Leatrice Eiseman, Exec. Director, Pantone Color Institute, in ELLE DECOR

Smart Home for the soul?

Between the sheets.

Yes! Smart Home thermostats, window coverings and lights make things calm and comfortable. They save energy, make homes safer, and life in general just a little bit easier. Get with the program, just ask for a little help from a pro!

Softer, sweeter, stonewashed bedding in natural linen needs no further explanation. Splurge. Then nestle in and enjoy for years to come. YOLO.

Blinds are a natural. “All kinds of blinds. There’s an abundance of great trends and many carry over into draperies as well. Nature-inspired choices and eco-friendly alternatives are very popular: bamboos, natural weaves and botanical prints.” Photo courtesy Parachute

FROM OUR EDITOR

SIMPLE pleasures I’ve always loved the changing of the seasons and the simple, familiar pleasures that come along with it. After enjoying a sun-drenched summer, relaxing poolside and tending to the vegetable garden, I relish in strolling through the leaf-strewn forest, surrounded by fiery foliage, and delighted by that oh-so-singular smell of autumn. Before long, winter will settle in, bringing with it all the splendour of the holiday season, and the perfect excuse to settle by the fire, toasty drink in hand, snuggled up in a cozy blanket. I’ve always had a soft spot for blankets. Remember Linus from The Peanuts? I also love trailing a blanket behind me wherever I go, especially in cooler weather. My family says that as a kid, I would curl up with my blankie smack-dab in the middle of our street! Now that summer has firmly drawn to a close, I can blissfully unpack my tucked-away throws and scatter them strategically throughout my home. Are you in the market for a new one? Don’t miss our handpicked selection on page 98. Another turning-of-the-seasons ritual I adore: discovering the hottest trends, colours and textures, then snatching up a few choice items to effortlessly switch up my interior. Want some pointers? Check out this season’s must-haves on p. 36.

INGREDIENTS MAKES 8 TO 10 SERVINGS

PASTRY 1⅓ cups 1 tbsp ½ tsp ¼ cup ⅓ cup 3 tbsp FILLING 1½ cups 3 1 cup ⅔ cup 2 tbsp 1 tsp ½ tsp ¼ tsp

all-purpose flour granulated sugar salt cold lard, cubed cold unsalted butter, cubed ice water (approx)

pumpkin purée eggs 35% cream granulated sugar maple syrup pumpkin pie spice cinnamon each ground ginger, nutmeg and salt TOPPING (OPTIONAL) 24 Gingersnap Leaf Cookies

DIRECTIONS PASTRY In food processor, pulse together flour, sugar and salt until combined; pulse in lard, a few cubes at a time, until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Pulse in butter, a few cubes at a time, until mixture is in coarse crumbs about the size of large peas, 6 to 8 pulses. Drizzle in ice water; pulse to form ragged dough. Wrap in plastic wrap; press into disc. Refrigerate until chilled, 1 hour. Position racks in centre and bottom of oven; preheat to 400°F. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough into 13-inch circle; fit into 9-inch pie plate. Trim, leaving ¾-inch overhang; fold overhang under and flute edge. Prick bottom all over with fork. Freeze until firm, about 10 minutes. Line crust with parchment paper; fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake

on bottom rack for 20 minutes. Remove parchment paper and pie weights; bake until golden, 10 to 13 minutes. Remove from oven; reduce temperature to 350°F. FILLING Meanwhile, line dinner plate with 2 layers of paper towels; spread pumpkin purée over top. Top with 2 more layers of paper towels; press to absorb any liquid. Scrape pumpkin purée into bowl; whisk in eggs, cream, sugar, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt. Scrape into crust. Bake on centre rack until top is no longer shiny and edge is set yet centre still jiggles slightly, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely on rack; refrigerate until chilled. TOPPING Arrange Gingersnap Leaf Cookies along crust (if using).

Buy diffrent shapes of ginger cookies to create a perfect look. Or make them if you have time.

tip

Pressing the pumpkin purée with paper towels is the quickest way to remove any liquid while preserving all of the flavour.

LEFT Carol is a proponent of utilitarian beauty. Anne’s blue plates play to the nautical palette and historic character of the home. And best of all, didn’t add any costs to the project. OPPOSITE Morning snacks and casual dinners are commonplace at this kitchen hub. Reclaimed wood was selected to top the island. The cabinets are handpainted with a low sheen. For texture and architectural interest, Nick finished the back with V-groove millwork, and added a baseboard. At the far end, a perpendicular cabinet stores cookbooks.

FOR NEARLY 235 YEARS,

food has been prepared in this maritime home. But never has it been so easy, or looked so great. Time is measured by the tides in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, the weather reflected in the ever-changing skies above the fishing vessels that bob in the harbor. For homeowner Anne Slater, this is just as it should be, which is why, in 2016, she purchased a Dutch Colonial home there. Built in 1784, it sits perched with idyllic views of the water. What wasn’t idyllic was the kitchen. Dark and cramped, it was a poor fit for an avid baker and cook like Anne. “The whole room was dominated by a huge double-wide wooden island with built-in appliances. Heavy wooden cabinets from the 1980s were hung in awkward places, and provided little storage. And the ceiling, which had been dropped— twice—was uncomfortably low.” she explains. Even the lighting was dim with only two small pot lights over the stove. And there was no exhaust hood. “So, even making tea caused a lot of condensation,” said Anne. Yearning for a function-forward kitchen that would retain the historic character of the home, Anne reached out to designer Carol Reed. This would be no small design challenge. The kitchen’s footprint, which was riddled with windows and doors, offered precious little wall space. The old floors were decidedly sloped. And a brick chimney, part of a defunct hearth, jutted awkwardly into the room. What’s more, the pantry area comprised a separate room. Carol was undeterred. She began by taking the room down to its studs (something that revealed an amusing assortment of oddities, including a clay pipe, a newspaper,

Simple task lighting illuminates the area without being obtrusive. BELOW There are no upper cabinets in the kitchen, but the spice cupboard is an exception. Its doors swing open for easy access. Carol hung it adjacent to the range for convenience. The roll-out drawers store the larger cookware and serving pieces. Durable and not as porous as marble, honed quartzite countertops feature directional veining that Carol carefully matched to a softer curbed perimeter.

With its delightful serving station, coffee, tea, drinks, and edibles are always within easy reach. The white-on-white paneling and custom cabinetry is warmed by the wood countertop.

and two old teeth hidden in the walls!) and tore out the dropped ceilings to expose the home’s original hand-hewn beams. She also designed custom cabinetry, and brought on local carpenter, Nick Bell, for the fabrication. The cabinets featured simple lines and hand-painted finishes to honor the history of the home, and each cupboard was custom-built to reflect Anne’s specific cooking needs. To maximize function, Carol created a series of thoughtful work zones, including a baking area with a lowered counter, ideal for rolling dough; a cozy cooking niche with a 36-inch commercial-style ranged nestled in a heart inset; ample storage with plenty of pull-outs; a handsome island with seating and a prep sink; and a full-room pantry with serving area. For the palette, Carol opted for nautical navy and white. These slightly modern hues served as a fresh counterpoint to the centuries-old wood floors and beams. Brass hardware provided a timeless sheen. And light-colored quartzite countertops backed by a white tiled backsplash were introduced to brighten up the space. Throughout the kitchen and pantry, Carol’s design philosophy is clear: “Even the most utilitarian items can double as decor,” she said. Anne’s rolling pins hang on the wall like art, as do some of her favorite blue china plates. Baskets and cutting boards, objects with a purpose, shine here in their dual role as home accents. Shortly after the renovation, her daughter and son-in-law visited from Toronto. The couple sat at at the island while Anne moved about in the kitchen. “What could be better than that?”

OPPOSITE Heritage windows overlooking the backyard pair beautifully with the double basin gooseneck apron sink. This fixture plays to home’s character. The same is true of the sconces, which are actually outdoor fixtures. The sink is flanked by a pull-out recycling center on one side and a paneled dishwasher on the other. Even though it would intersect the windows, Carol recommended a lower counter for baking. “I was wary,” said Anne. “But now it’s one of my favorite spots in the kitchen.” The height is ideal for rolling out dough and pastries. Pull-out drawers hold baking supplies. A “magic shelf” hides the stand mixer when not in use. Anne’s vintage rolling pins, which get regular use, look charming “stored” on the wall. LEFT The pantry is just off the kitchen and adjacent to the dining room—a perfect place for wine. Carol and Nick embraced the antique sloped floors, adapting the cabinetry to its angles. The floors were sanded to a lighter color than the original. Nick replicated the home’s millwork to frame the door. Bead-board was added for wall texture.

MAXIMALISM Leave the sleek minimalist look at the door, and opt for vibrant layers of texture, colour, and prints throughout your home, says Etsy’s resident trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson. When incorporating maximalism into your home décor, think about these factors: colour, comfort, and while layering, a cohesive theme. Maximalism encourages a more-is-more philosophy but you don’t want it feeling messy or unkempt. If you want to start small, try adding pillows with different prints, colours, and shapes to your couch or add art of various style and size to a wall. These small updates can make a major statement.

The organic look you’ll find is without a doubt the biggest autumnal trend this year. Whether your interior is comfycozy or straight-up chic. Sonia Crete suggest to convey a more organic look to your space, simply weave in a natural fibre basket, or add leaf print pillows and wall décor. And Dayna Isom Johnson agrees. Shoppers are gravitating towards items that are all-natural or sustainable, for a more holistic feel when it comes to decorating and living, they noted.

This living room highlights an important design lesson: contrast adds layers and interest to a space. hen designer Alyssa Gray of Harper Gray Design was tasked to revamp Alisha and Rob Kassam’s living room in Toronto’s midtown, she wanted to create a kid-friendly space with a clean aesthetic. Using a neutral backdrop, graphic accents and airy layout, this contemporary look doesn’t sacrifice comfort or function. Here, we’ve rounded up the four design elements that were used to achieve it.

SATURATED HUES

Gone are the days of muted, soft tones: Colour is back in a big way! A neutral space like this is an ideal opportunity to bring a few bold colours into the mix. Here, jewel-toned toss cushions and accessories add a lovely depth and richness to the bright living room.

CLEAN LINES

From the attention-grabbing light fixture to the shapely arm chairs and sleek, linear fireplace, this inviting design scheme is full of clean lines that draw the eye upwards and give the small room the visual space it needs. Choosing leggy furniture instead of upholstered pieces adds a light, airy feeling - especially important in a room like this that’s open to the kitchen.

“My plan for this space was to create a cozy and comfortable room that would complement the open kitchen,” says designer Alyssa Gray. NATURAL LIGHT

“Sunlight is something that should always be maximized when available,” says Alyssa. Here, the large window overlooks a verdant backyard, so Alyssa mirrored that lush greenery inside. Leaving the window mostly unadorned allows for lots of natural light. “The lighter room juxtaposed with the darker pieces creates a gentle chiaroscuro effect,” she adds.

On a wing and a prayer, a young couple transform a 135-year-old presbytery into a heavenly home.

Natural light pours in through a wall of windows lining a corner nook. The couple built bench seating, as deep and inviting as a large bed, and covered it in pretty pillows. “We made it with waterproof fabric and sliding drawers that will one day house toys. “As a little girl, I always imagined living in an old brick house, filled with kids,” says Josiane. To bring this 3,500-square-foot structure built in 1884 back to life, the couple had tons of ideas and lots of guts. With a vision of creating a warm and inviting space to welcome friends and family, they started by creating an airy, open floor plan, maximizing the natural lighting, and laying concrete floors throughout the entire first story. “We have a dog and we’d like to have children. We didn’t want to have to clean up all the time,” adds the young police officer. Throughout the transformation, the owners purchased products locally and reused materials when possible.

LEFT A striking moose head hangs on the feature wall, over the glowing, double-sided fireplace. “Hunting is our passion. A dramatic high-low transformation takes a family’s main floor from fussy to fabulous, and kid-friendly, too!

LEFT Wraparound cabinets were already in the house (bonus!) but Ashley devised the fantastic idea of personalizing it with family photos the couple can rotate. G

reek columns have their place in design — as part of the Athenian Parthenon. But the nine ornate pillars on the main floor of this house in Toronto just weren’t working. “It was stylistically unusual,” explained the homeowner, who bought the house in the leafy Riverdale neighbourhood with his wife when she was pregnant with their second son, about three years ago. The 2,800-square-foot detached property also had squared archways that made the ceiling feel low, as well as frosted glass blocks that didn’t let in enough light. “We just wanted a warm and welcoming home where you could feel happy lounging”, say the homeowners. Other asks: hardwearing furniture that looks swanky but can handle rough-and-tumble kids, as well as lots of storage. Drawn to the designer’s eclectic modern-meets-vintage style, the couple enlisted Ashley Montgomery, who runs an eponymous design firm, to do an epic revamp of their main floor. “We went with a modern farmhouse feel with black windows and wood elements in the furniture and floors against crisp white walls,” says Ashley of the four-month project.

OPPOSITE Simplicity reigns in the foyer, where a round mirror offsets a chic angular console with brass pulls. Curated elements, including vintage candlesticks and dried eucalyptus are welcoming in their sparseness. “It’s a catchall spot for mail, keys and hats and gloves in the woven belly baskets,” says Ashley. She freshened the vestibule with a gorgeous mosaic tile floor (that is durable, too, for slushy boots), wall paneling, hooks to peg up coats and a shoe cabinet. “The doors were original, but I wanted to keep them. I like the vintage flair they give to the place,” she says. “I brought in lots of high-low pieces. You don’t need to splurge on every item to have a beautiful space,” says Ashley. To that end, she layered in vintage brass bowls and candlesticks for a collected-over-time feel. An arty photo wall of family pictures in the breakfast nook is another wallet-friendly idea, as is an Ikea shoe cabinet in the foyer, tweaked with glammy gold knobs and a marble slab. On the flipside, there were pricier but vital elements that made the design. “We got rid of the glass blocks, replacing them with great windows that allow a ton of natural light into the back of the house,” says Ashley. (They’re vinyl, so not too pricy.) The columns and busy archways also got shown the door, which boosted the ceiling height in the process. Bringing it all together, engineered white-oak plank floors that connect the rooms for a seamless transition. Another major upgrade was the new powder room, tucked underneath the stairs. Practical and pretty, the teeny two-piece has space-saving pocket doors. But perhaps the most dramatic feature is the fireplace. The mantel-less original was wood burning with a dominant black marble wall behind it. The refaced version has sultry grey herringbone tile, a mantel for showcasing pretty things and flanking storage, while the gas insert makes it child-friendly. It’s a far cry from the house’s beginnings: “We’re very happy. Ashley’s style really aligned with ours — it’s kid-friendly and not overly formal”, say the homeowners. In fact, the couple is so thrilled by the transformation, they’re going for round two. Ashley’s next challenge? Designing a new kitchen.

A GALLERY WALL in the living area features an arresting hodgepodge of sentimental family items. 52 |

OPPOSITE, FAR LEFT This scene gets its kick from the hodgepodge of textures (and palm tree artwork by Christine Flynn). The candlesticks have an intriguing aged patina (Ashley staggered them for interest), while the rustic harvest table is an interesting contrast to the plush textiles. TABLE, CHAIRS, Restoration Hardware; CANDLESTICKS, vintage, Ashley Montgomery design; VASE, IKEA.

ABOVE “The dining area is family- friendly, so there’s a soft banquette for the kids,” says Ashley, who chose navy blue for a splash of colour. She kept the finish raw on the harvest table. “Even though it’s susceptible to stains, we liked that the table tells a story,” she says. “Red wine or coffee will remind you of a certain evening. It builds character over time.” The slipcovered chairs are on casters so they’re easy to move around; the black ones travel back and forth between here and the breakfast nook for extra seating.

This charming Victorian row house in Toronto’s historical Cabbagetown had so much architectural appeal, its current tenants snatched it up from a thousand miles away. TEXT LAURA MUIR PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN MILLER STYLING SARAH BIRNIE

D

esigner Sarah Birnie was nearing the end of an adventure of a lifetime, a yearlong road trip around the United States with her entrepreneur husband, Jeremy, and their daughter Olivia (now 5), when a friend made the fortuitous Toronto discovery. A stunning five-bedroom semi-detached home across the street from a beautiful park was for rent. Through the miracle of video calling, Sarah was instantly able to see the house’s potential. What immediately struck her was the character. All the original architectural details — substantial mouldings, soaring ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace — were still intact. But the space was tired, rickety and needed some work. And despite it being a rental, Sarah was so smitten with the house’s stunning bones, she knew she could give this 100-year-old gem the love it deserved. The first order of business was painting the orange and blue walls a crisp shade of white. Inspired by the chic look of Parisian apartments and Brooklyn brownstones, she balanced old and new and incorporated a neutral palette to keep the look fresh. “Everything was painted from top to bottom, including the mouldings, so it was a bit of an undertaking,” says Sarah.

Continuing into the master bedroom, the neutral palette lends the space a calm, soothing vibe. The bed’s headboard has a story: it’s made from the cold cellar door from the couple’s first house. “The upholstered bench is mostly there so that my daughter can climb up onto the bed,” says Sarah.

Another major job involved doing a cheap and cheerful kitchen renovation. Keeping the small room simple, Sarah incorporated flat-panel cabinetry, durable engineered quartz countertops, slate flooring and affordable stainless steel appliances. Tweaking the house also included polishing the original hardwood floors, incorporating more storage and installing new modern light fixtures. Giving their space a warm and personal touch included surrounding themselves with meaningful objects. Heirloom antiques, collectibles

WARM WELCOME

This season is about embracing our autumnal instincts and celebrating warm, cozy interiors, neutral palettes, more personalized décor, and pops of rich, statement colours. It’s about that fine balance between new and old, contemporary and vintage, light and dark, rustic and refined. Just like the fall reflects our mood, this issue is all about how your décor directly reflects your style.

Interior designer Ines Mazzotta transformed this boring Toronto bungalow into a stately stunner.

The living room drapery highlights the space’s soaring 12-1/2-foot ceilings, lending the room a sense of grandeur. “Maggie loves pink, so I said, ‘Let’s just go for it,’” recalls Ines. “But this was not supposed to be a Barbie house. It needed to be sophisticated so this is no bubblegum pink; this is a beautiful, understated blush.”

ABOVE Pretty pink stools, set under a sleek brass and smoked glass console, offer extra seating in the living room and play off the drapes. Elements like black-and-white photographs and a sculptural lamp, with its gold foil finish, suggest a bit of drama and sophisticated edge. LEFT Adorable faux fur and pale wood stools, tucked under a Nero Marquina marble console, lends a hint of whimsy in the living room and serves as extra seating (along with the ottomans and pink stools in the room) when Maggie entertains. “Ines has an incredible eye for art and is very good at finding the right pieces,” Maggie says. “Because the ceilings are so high, she opted for larger pieces instead of gallery walls.” STOOLS, Elte Mkt; CONSOLE, Wayfair; PAINTING, Jackie Von Tobel.

The size of the kitchen’s island was based on the slab of marble used for the countertop. “You can’t get a slab beyond that size, so I just put in the biggest piece of marble and the biggest island I possibly could,” Maggie says. The homeowner wanted a bright kitchen that would stand the test of time. “This is a very classic kitchen with a kind of contemporary take on it,” says Ines. Paired with chic velvet stools — upholstered in a kid-friendly wipeable fabric — the island’s dusty blue hue plays into the living room’s colour palette, which features navy blue. OPPOSITE The kitchen cabinetry features a mix of closed and open shelves flanking the sink, plus cupboards with glass-panelled doors holding a large collection of wine and champagne glasses (the couple has a wine cellar in the basement) and antique china. “Because it is a large kitchen and she needed a lot of storage, we wanted to make sure that it didn’t feel overwhelming,” says Ines. A stunning feature in the space, the cabinets are backed with the same marble subway tile used for the backsplash.

MaggieAdhami-Boynton aptly describes her home as “castle light.” The residence may be in Toronto, but it conjures the romanticism of Old World Europe, with traditional mouldings that cover every wall, wide-open spaces, high ceilings, and understated opulence. “I wanted that European castle feel without being too gaudy,” Maggie says.

In the all-white kitchen, elements like the Calacatta marble countertop, marblesubway-tiled backsplash, and hits of brass—via the hardware, faucets and stunning bistro-style pendant lights—add warmth.

“In the dining room, we blew out the windows on either side of the door (which already existed), so we get a ton of light in that space,” Maggie says. A massive clean-lined Parsons table made of reclaimed oak is juxtaposed with more ornate elements like the vintage French-style chairs, the oversized gilded mirror and ornate French-style buffet. The chandelier references old-world lanterns in a more contemporary way. Maggie created a chic home that reflects her love of fashion balanced with the needs of a young family.

Maggie’s “castle” is actually a sprawling 3,200-square-foot 1950s brick bungalow, which she and her husband, insurance executive Chris Boynton, purchased in 2016 and renovated over the span of a year. “We had one child and I was very pregnant,” Maggie says, noting that their previous house was too small for a growing family. After experiencing their share of ludicrous bidding wars, an agent called and gave them a tip on an exclusive sale. “It wasn’t listed on the market, so only a few people had gone through it,” she says. A tech and marketing professional by day, Maggie is also a style influencer. “I have a day job, but as a hobby, I run an Instagram page and blog called Over Exposed where I showcase my style,” she says. “It’s my creative outlet.” It was important for her to find a house she could renovate, injecting her own personal style. This stately bungalow on a coveted tree-lined lot fit the bill. With the help of her brother, a luxury homes builder, and interior designer Ines Mazzotta of Kelly Hopter Interiors, Maggie created a chic home that reflects her love of fashion balanced with the needs of a young family (she and Chris now have three small children, Jasper, 4, Ariella, 2, and Caspian, who just turned 1). “I would have loved to have beautiful brass and glass tables instead of the navy blue ottomans in the living room,” she says. “But we decided kids are going to use this area so glass isn’t really sensible.” A balance of functionality and style defined the renovation, which involved a major gut-job. Walls were taken down, the layout was overhauled and ceilings were opened up to the attic to add three feet of height. New architectural details like extratall doors, floor-to-ceiling mouldings, and expansive windows helped Maggie enhance the Old World vibe she was after.

One thing’s for sure: it's a home that would make anyone feel like royalty.

Within the newly planned space, Ines helped Maggie bring her vision of a chic, family-friendly space to life, solving challenges like how to furnish their generous living room for TVwatching and large family gatherings—as well as how to incorporate some pink, Maggie’s favourite colour, without offending her husband. The blush-pink drapery, which Chris loves, ended up being a showstopper. Within the airy home, pieces like gilded mirrors, vintage French-style furnishings and luxe materials such as brass, marble, shagreen and faux fur enhanced the sumptuous look. Contrasted with more contemporary items against a crisp white backdrop, one thing's for sure: it’s a home that would make any occupant feel like royalty.

Formerly an eating area off the kitchen, the master bedroom features a bow window where a vintage French-style bed was placed for a dream-like setting. “Right behind that it’s all forested and very picturesque,” Maggie says. The mix of elements in the space creates a luxurious, serene look. “The nightstands and dresser with brass details are contemporary in shape but also glamorous,” says Ines. “The lamps have marble bases, so they’re quite chic, and there is a lot of softness introduced with the velvet on the pillow and the bench.” An oversized chandelier makes a grand, sculptural statement in the room. Autumn

With dreams of designing a home that’s curent with a hint of heritage, an Ontario home builder is inspired by an iconic French stove.

OPPOSITE Classic features like tall mullioned windows, a grand red oak front door with sidelights and a herringbonepattern brick front walk are contrasted with more modern elements like simple square columns for an updated historical look. White pumpkins and big cast-iron planters bursting with white chrysanthemums feel festive but understated at Thanksgiving. DESIGN, Lidia Van Zyl Design, Ivzdesign.com; BUILDER, Meridian Design Build; DOOR, Maxwell Woodturnings; WINDOWS, DeCola Windows and doors.

RIGHT A pale unpainted wood door and antique table, plus woven accents like a jute rug, wicker basket and ropewrapped table lamp bring a timeless elegance to the front hall, while walls washed in Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White (Lynne’s go-to paint) keep the look light and contemporary. “We have a lot of antique pieces that we repurpose and marry with modern finishes,” says homeowner and builder John Raimondi. MIRROR, At home Interiors; RUG Saturday Afternoons.

L

a Cornue stoves, with their bold colours and ornate detailing, are the pinnacle of kitchen luxury. Some homeowners build a kitchen around them. But a whole home? That’s a more novel concept. Several years ago, John Raimondi, a builder of custom lakefront homes, took a shine to a La Cornue. When it came time in 2016 to build a house for his own family in Innisfil, Ont., that iconic stove figured prominently. “I thought it’d be a great jumping-off point for our kitchen—and really, for the whole house.” Indeed, the black of the Raimondis’ stove reappears regularly throughout their entire newly-built four-bedroom house. In the dining room, you can spot it in the bold, black Windsor chairs. Ditto, in the mudroom’s vintage lockers, and even the Thanksgiving pumpkins carry the signature colour. Providing contrast, the inky hue is offset by ample natural light and expanses of white walls broken up by rough-hewn barn beams and rugged rock throughout the home. It’s an aesthetic that meshes perfectly with the refined farmhouse style John and his wife Lynne wanted, set on a four-acre lakefront lot on Lake Simcoe’s Kempenfeldt Bay. Inside, the spaces—which the couple worked on with designer Lidia Van Zyl—were planned to feel cozy, but not overly historic. “We didn’t want it to be mistaken for something old,” John says. “It’s current with a hint of heritage.” STYLEATHOME.COM OCTOBER 2019

PLACEMATS, Pier1; CANDLES, CUTLERY, IKEA; PLATES, ironstone.

OPPOSITE For the great room’s sitting area, the wood-burning fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out toward the lake were “non-negotiables” for Lynne. Casual, sand-toned sofas, a pair of leather chairs and a coffee table – all with roomy proportions – are inviting and well-suited to the dimensions of the space. Underneath a mantel made of an old barn beam, a huge boulder acts as a keystone in the stacked Owen Sound ledge rock. The huge round

chandelier, mantel mirror and tall lanterns are suitably clean-lined accents that carry the black theme colour into this area. The flooring throughout the house is white oak. CHANDELIER, COFFEE TABLE, Restoration Hardware; SOFAS, Sears; MIRROR, Dwellings; CHAIRS, Elte.

Floating wood shelves beautifully show off their tasteful kitchen collection

A huge wood island and delicate glass pendant lights delineate the kitchen without hampering visual flow to the window. The island’s white Caesarstone counter also lightens the look. Double doors lead out to the screened-in porch, where a second wood-burning fireplace lets the family enjoy dining, lounging and watching TV outside even in cooler weather. The dramatic black La Cornue stove inspired the design of the custom kitchen. “That was the catalyst: we designed all the elements of the kitchen and its colours around it.” Black cabinets adorned with steel strapping and topped with a stainless steel counter run the length of the wall, broken up by two sets of oak drawers. The dark tone is balanced by abundant natural light and walls washed in warm white. STOVE, TA Appliances; COUNTERTOPS, Northern Granite Works; SCONCE, Rona; STOOLS, Restoration Hardware.

ABOVE Carrying the black, white and wood colour palette into kitchen utensils keeps the look historical and cohesive. LEFT Vintage drafting stools with a well-worn finish are dark-toned counterpoints to the spacious oak island and its crisp white Caesarstone top. “There was a lot of discussion on whether we should do a coloured painted-wood

island. Instead, we chose to do it in wood to match the beams and floor,” John says. Floating wood shelves filled with artful serving pieces build on the oldfashioned, unfitted kitchen look. “We had more than enough cabinet space elsewhere, so we opted for something more architectural and decorative for the uppers,” John says.

The living room, with a beamed and panelled ceiling and towering stone fireplace, has the most rustic look. “The beams came out of a 125-year-old barn just north of here,” John says. “We paired them with crisp ceiling boards that are actually stained white oak flooring.” The great room commands the most square-footage, with the bedrooms kept small. “We wanted this space to be as big as possible so everyone can hang out together”, explains Lynne. At Thanksgiving, when John and Lynne’s families descend and gather in the great room before the festive meal, that big black stove figures prominently, proffering the turkey, stuffing, vegetables and pies that everyone looks forward to every year. And although John might not be the cook in the family, he definitely knows this: the kitchen is the heart of a home, and the inspiration for his.

The openwork pendant light casts pretty patterns OPPOSITE It’s as functional as any modern mudroom, but this one – located between the garage, laundry room and kitchen pantry – is outfitted with decidedly old-world accoutrements like a long church pew, a vintage schoolhouse chalkboard and row of lockers painted in black. The walls are clad in cedar shakes – leftover from the exterior, and painted white. The herringbone pattern of the slate floor tiles echoes the look of the front walk. LIGHTS, Glass Lighting Gallery; PILLOWS, Lidia Van Zyl Design; FLOORING, Desert Tile.

ABOVE The mudroom lockers were salvaged from Lynne and John’s high school, where the pair first met. “They were a bright blue, so we painted them to match the slate floor,” Lynne says. “And there’s four of them, so we each have one.” Four big cast-iron hooks add aditional function. “The kids can grab their school bags, or their hockey or

soccer bags, and just head out,” she adds. “We don’t have to store those things in other rooms.” HOOKS, Muskoka Living; RUG Urban Barn.

RIGHT The bright white mainfloor guest room is dressed with classic cottagey accents like a wrought-iron bed, summery striped cotton blanket and seagrass rug. Because there’s just one guest room, Lynne outfitted it with two queen-sized beds. “It’s a perfect room for a full family,” she says. A homeowner’s love of books sparks a renovation with a very happy ending.

OPPOSITE Giving the couple a space where they could “snuggle up with a good blanket on a cozy, deep sofa” was a big priority in the renovation, says Brenda. The new 17-foot-by-17foot family room, part of the house’s back extension, met this criteria and more. The space features a wall of folding glass doors to offer indoor/outdoor living. “You can open the family room completely to the backyard,” says Brenda.

“WHAT STARTED THE RENOVATION WAS MY NEED FOR A BOOKSHELF,” says Toronto homeowner and serious bibliophile Keri West. “It evolved from there.” Having grown tired of keeping her collection of 700 books boxed up in the garage, she and her husband, actor and television host Noah Cappe, finally committed to proper shelves. “And then there was a debate about where to put them…and then we decided to renovate the entire house!” It may seem like it was a snap decision, but it had been a long time coming. Within 10 years, Keri and Noah had bought and sold five separate homes, working their way up the Toronto real estate ladder—from a small condo to a rowhouse to detached homes— until buying this gem. “This house was being flipped on the market when we saw it,” says Noah. “Everything was brand new, in the heart of the city facing a school, and it felt like you were looking out into this big open space. We just fell in love with it.” That was six years ago, and after living here for four years the couple still thought the place was perfect for them so they decided to invest in making it their forever home.

base and porcelain-tiled TV niche. The wood panelling on the wall and ceiling lends warmth and visually connects the room with the outside. “Since you could open the family room completely to the backyard, we wanted there to be a flow in terms of materials,” says Brenda. “That’s why there’s so much wood. It really feels like you’re in an indoor/outdoor space that continues into the backyard.”

With the help of Brenda Izen of Izen Architecture, they spent a year turning it into a chic 2,650-square-foot space with undeniable cool factor. “They are a very cool couple,” says Brenda. “So part of the renovation was to make this home livable for them and conducive to their lifestyle.” For this busy couple—Keri is working on her PhD in social work and Noah travels extensively as the host of the Food Network and Cooking Channel’s Carnival Eats— lounging around the house with their two beloved black cats, Mr. Gary Wu and Dr. Peter Venkman, is just as important as the industry events they attend or the legendary parties they throw. “We’re either in our sweatpants like everybody else,” says Noah. “Or dressed up as the Golden Girls with 30 of our friends!” adds Keri, finishing the sentence. The other consideration for the renovation was preparing the house for a growing family (the couple has started the process of adopting a child).

THE COUNTER-TO-CEILING MARBLE BACKSPLASH ADDS INSTANT ELEGANCE

ABOVE Letting in more natural light was a big priority in the renovation. “It’s obviously a very long and thin house,” says Noah, “so we wanted to do everything we could to try to bring in as much light as possible. We blew out the front wall and opened up the window, put in a window

ABOVE The kitchen’s counter-toceiling marble backsplash adds a wow factor in the kitchen along with the white quartz countertops. “I don’t know if it’s the Food Network part of me, or just being on set too many times, but when we were choosing countertops it was like I wanted that stark white beautiful clean countertop that just makes chopping a pepper look like a photo shoot,” says Noah. RIGHT The kitchen features ebonized oak cabinetry with brass details and marble elements. “The backsplash is marble, and there is a part over the hood that looks like a suspended piece of marble, which is stunning,” says Brenda. A sheep sculpture (along with the pig sculpture in the family room) represents the couple’s love of animals. “Apparently the City of Toronto frowns upon you keeping a real sheep so that was the next best thing,” says Keri. “The sweaters aren’t as comfortable,” adds Noah. Contemplating bookshelves turned into a massive project that included building a rear extension, which added 875 square feet to the house and allowed for a new family room (with a wall of folding glass doors) and an upstairs master bedroom (with a box bay window that cantilevers over the backyard). “Then it was like a classic domino effect,” says Noah. They were told if they dug two feet down they could turn the basement into a usable space for a home theatre. “Yup!” says Noah, referring to his affirmative response. And after finishing the design of the new rooms, it became apparent the rest of the house needed to follow suit. “It went from replacing dark floors with light oak to really having to do everything to bring it all into this current aesthetic,” says Keri.

ABOVE Collected over time, the limited edition prints of the couple’s favourite recording artists caught in candid moments serve as conversation pieces in the dining room. “Each picture is cool because there’s all these amazing backstories,” says Noah. “Whether it’s Bowie transforming into Ziggy Stardust or Neil Young having breakfast right before he finds out later on that day that his ranch is burned down, there are these quirky cool little glimpses.”

One of those massive put-in-the-middlepiece-and-extend-it-for-10 type things, and when we were changing things around we really realized we don’t need that amount of space allocated to that,” says Noah. “So we downsized and made it feel a little bit more comfortable.” DINING TABLE, Shelter Furniture; DINING CHAIRS, Shelter Furniture; CONSOLE TABLE, Elte; CANDLE HOLDER, Morba; CHANDELIER, Decorum Decorative Finds; FLOORING (throughout), Stone Tile; BAR CART, West Elm; WALL PAINT, (throughout), Benjamin Moore.

THE AIRY OFFICE WILL EASILY BE CONVERTED INTO A DREAMY NURSERY

The result is an inviting, bright and modern space that’s underscored with a zest for life. A mix of natural materials like wood, marble, and hits of brass inject luxury, depth and warmth; a neutral palette keeps things sophisticated and classic; and not only do the storied artwork, collections and curios inject colour and personality, but they also indicate the couple’s wide range of interests. The family room – where a Slim Aaron photograph called “Poolside Glamour” sets the tone – exemplifies the house’s overall swankiness. “I remember the first couple of weeks after the renovation,” says Noah. “We would be sitting in the family room and the whole vibe felt like we had Airbnb-ed some L.A. producer’s Hollywood Hills house. It was hard to believe it was ours!” As for the bookshelves? “The craziest thing is they got put into the guestroom,” he says. “They’re beautiful and it works well, but Keri’s books were the reason we started the whole thing and they were one of the last things we ended up arranging!”

LEFT Keri’s home office, which was formerly the master bedroom, will eventually be turned into the nursery. “We imagined a child growing up in this room and having lots of floor space and tons of natural light flowing in,” says Keri. “Also the room looks over the school across the street’s field. So we wanted a really special place for a little person to grow up.” Elements like the green pendant, green chair, geometrical mirror and dresser (which will be converted into a change table) were chosen to work in the space when it eventually becomes a nursery. ABOVE The beautiful antique cameras displayed in the home office are actually only a small part of an extraordinary collection that Keri inherited from her father. (The rest of the collection takes pride of place in a lighted glass display case in the basement’s home theatre.) “There are dozens and dozens of cameras. It’s a huge collection,” says Keri. “Dad was very particular about what he added to his collection and was so knowledgeable about them. They obviously have a sentimental value, but they’re also incredibly beautiful and we wanted to do the collection justice and really display them in a way that would have made him proud.”

Kosher cravings PHOTOGRAPHY RYAN SZULC | FOOD STYLING MICHELLE RABIN

This golden broth goes a long way to healing what ails you, heart and soul.

Traditionally, kosher meals were meant to sustain, not entertain, but cookbook author Amy Rosen has the chutzpah to do both. They will schmear, braise and baste their way into your home and heart.

FOOD CHICKEN SOUP (AKA JEWISH PENICILLIN) SERVES 10 TO 12

1

roasting chicken, giblet bag removed, trimmed of excess fat and rinsed 2 parsnips, peeled and ends chopped off 2 stalks celery with leaves 2 large onions, halved 6 medium carrots, peeled and ends chopped off 1 tbsp sea salt, plus more to taste pepper to taste 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley ¼ cup chopped dill, plus a few sprigs for garnish

you don’t have that much time to spare, several hours will do in a pinch. When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 325°F. Cover the brisket with foil and cook, covered, for 3 hours. Remove the foil and cook, uncovered, for an additional 30 minutes. Let cool, then refrigerate the brisket (this aids in slicing).

When the brisket is cold, skim and discard the fat with a spoon. Remove the brisket from the sauce and slice thinly against the grain. Add it back into the pan with the sauce. About 1 hour before you’re ready to serve, preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the brisket in the oven and reheat, uncovered, for 20–30 minutes, spooning the sauce overtop a few times. Serve at once.

Crowd-pleaser (and kosher!) main course

Put the chicken in a very large pot and pour in about 12–14 cups water, making sure clucky is covered. With the stockpot uncovered, bring to a boil, using a slotted spoon to skim and discard the foam that accumulates. Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the whole parsnips, celery, onions and carrots and the salt and pepper. Cook, partially covered, for at least 2 hours (3 hours is better, though). Skim occasionally as foam appears. With about 10 minutes to go, toss in the parsley and dill. For a pristine broth, remove the chicken, veggies and herbs from the pot and set aside. Strain the soup through a sieve or colander lined with cheesecloth (or a double layer of paper towel), returning the clear broth to a clean pot. Shred or slice the chicken; discard the onions, celery and parsley; and roughly chop the carrots and parsnips and add them back into the soup before serving. To serve, spoon a ladle or two of broth, then add a few pieces of carrot, parsnip, a bisl of chicken (use the rest for chicken salad sandwiches tomorrow) and a sprig of fresh dill into each bowl. This is even better bejeweled with a couple of matzo balls (p. 64), meat kreplach (p. 60) or egg noodles (p. 70). Shabbat shalom.

AMY’S PERFECT PECAN BUNS MAKES 12

for the dough 1 cup milk 5 tbsp butter 1 (¼ oz) package active dry yeast 3 tbsp sugar 1 tsp sea salt 4¾ cups flour, divided 3 eggs Drizzle of vegetable oil for the topping ¾ cup butter ¾ cup packed brown sugar 2 tsp ground cinnamon ½ cup chopped pecans Pinch of kosher salt

for the filling ¾ cup brown sugar ½ cup chopped pecans 2 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ cup butter, softened Make the dough. In a small saucepan over low heat (or carefully in the microwave), warm the milk and butter until the butter has melted and the temperature is hot but not scalding (you’re looking for 105°F on a thermometer). Pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, and sprinkle the yeast and sugar overtop. Do not stir. Let sit until it foams, about 8–10 minutes. Stir in the salt.

Light and fluffy, with a crunchy caramelly glaze

Add 2¼ cups flour and mix until just combined. Add the eggs and mix until incorporated. Knead the dough on medium-high speed until a smooth batter forms, about 2–3 minutes. Add the remaining 2½ cups flour and knead on medium until the dough comes together and forms a smooth, elastic ball, about 6–8 minutes. Add a bit more flour if needed. Add a drizzle of oil to a large bowl and turn the ball of dough around in it so it’s got a light sheen all over. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise until it doubles in size, about 1 hour. While the dough is rising, make the topping. Grease a 9 × 13-inch baking pan with a bit of butter. Melt ¾ cup butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon, whisking until smooth. Pour into the greased baking pan. Sprinkle the bottom of the pan with chopped pecans and a pinch of salt. Set aside. To make the filling, combine the brown sugar, chopped pecans and cinnamon in a bowl. Set aside. When the dough is ready, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a 12 × 18-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough with an offset spatula, leaving a ¾-inch border along the sides. Sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar, cinnamon and pecan filling mixture. Starting at one long end, roll the dough into a log and pinch to seal the seam. With the seam side down, slice the log into 12 fat rounds; each one should be just over three fingers thick. Place in the prepared pan, cut side up and slightly spaced apart. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and let rise until puffy, about 20–25 minutes. During this second rise, place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375°F. Once the buns have risen, remove the plastic wrap and bake the buns until golden brown, about 18–22 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 3 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter. Scrape any remaining filling from the pan onto the buns. Serve at once. If you don’t eat them all in one sitting, they also freeze well.
