A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Let me share a secret with you. Every month, the day after we shoot pages to press for printing, the team unwinds by going beyond the walls of our office, to ideate and make plans for what new we could bring to you next. You will be surprised to know that the idea of this issue, in fact, was born when we did a reunion of our ex and current colleagues in a beautiful apartment that we had booked in the outskirts of Delhi one rainy July day. From evaluating the space we were partying at two spaces around us and many more... We got the idea to create this special themed issue i.e. Spaces (Homes & Offices). So we started with our favourite picks of 10 such buildings from the contemporary world that are not only unusual but also very interestingly designed.

The home from Delhi in Ideal Living is a perfect example of striking the right balance between furniture and art, while keeping fluidity in the space. With work pressure these days, all of us bring work home at some time or the other. We believe that you need a dedicated spot to do all that work and this space should inspire and motivate you. Well, we have that sorted for you! I would like to end this note with the hope that you find the inspiration for the rooms in your life - perhaps a space that is a rejuvenation-relaxatio .

INBOX LETTER OF THE MONTH `120

The Ideal Home and Garden, August 2019 Vol 13 Issue 10

STYLE STEAL WALL DECORATING IDEAS SURROUND YOURSELF WITH WILDERNESS AND LUXURY IN HOTELS AROUND THE GLOBE TAPING THE TREND: SUSTAINABILITY

Home Coming Home is where the heart resides. The saying is true. The Ideal Living section is unmistakably a favourite of mine. Beautiful homes from India and chic homes from European countries are a great source of information and are the best guide to home decor. On a personal level, for me, such homes are a blessing in disguise. As I am a student pursuing a course in interior designing, the stylised homes appearing in TIHG are a pure source of information, a practical source of edutainment and above all, it acts as a guide for a perfect professional future.

Future Spectacles I am a fan of TIHG since 2015. I don’t have any one such perfect article. For me all features are interesting and educative. However, there is a feature in the magazine, which stands out always - Designer Speak. The word ‘designer’ is very common, however what appears in the magazine is simply outstanding. TIHG explores the word designer to the hilt. Every issue there is a surprise either in the form of material designers, wood designers, wrought iron designers, artifact designers, etc. There is a saying - a magazine that explores, does wonders for its readers. Looking forward to getting exposed to more wonderful articles in the issues to come.

Naginda Kamaraj, Chennai

Future Green

The Big Bang A lifestyle magazine is known by it’s cover and it’s content. Same goes for TIHG. Issue after issue, the cover simply upstages the previous one. It is nothing short of a visual delight. Must mention that the cover selection must be a tough call. Definitely there is competition, however, I believe there is space for good content, amazing visuals, reader-friendly articles, and the zeal to give the best each month, irrespective of the magazine. For me, as a reader, TIHG is at the top of the pack. Not because, I am a fan of the magazine, but because it churns out fresh and exciting content every month, which are out-of-the-box experiences. Pritika Kinra, Kolkata

There was a time when India was a land in abundance with greenery. Every street, every corner of the road had big trees. Today, sadly times have changed. Tall skyscrapers, glass buildings and the urge to expand further to accommodate the ever growing population is taking a toll on the environment. However, all is not lost, the younger generation is slowly, but surely understanding the value of planting more trees. But, I believe that it all starts from the ground level - our home. It is important to educate our children about the importance of planting plants in our home and the surrounding environment. Kamaldeep Arora, Patiala, Punjab

MEET & GREET WhERE: BENT ChAIR, JANPATh TIHG with Bent Chair concluded the first series of Design Circle with an information packed talk show on the Ecological Environment:Rhetoric or Reality.

Ruhi Singh, Natasha Jain

Natasha Jain , Vibhuti Sood

And suddenly, we knew it’s time to start something new. After much brain storming session we zeroed down on a Talk Show with similar minds since it is our responsibility to showcase and highlight the happening of the industry globally. With a simple aim to draw attention to issues where the readers should focus. It was a cloudy July morning when prominent design and architecture names gathered at Janpath, Delhi for two reasonsTo witness the launch of Bent Chair’s second store in the capital and to be a part of TIHG’s DESIGN CIRCLE with the topic Ecological Environment:Rhetoric or Reality. Renowned architect Nilanjan Bhowal of Design Consortium moderated the show with a brief that ecology is the study of relationships between living organism with one another and with the physical environment. In fact the ecological environment we live in, determines the human behavior. It has also been widely studied that our five senses’ response to environment are most important in determining our health. Therefore designers and architects play an important role as they are the connoisseur of designing for human beings. The afternoon was open for a freeflowing discussion where Nilanjan asked each of the panelist to describe their design philosophy and how the end products designed by them affects the physical environment. The hour long discussion was quiet interactive and loaded with ideas, and ended with delicious dishes and drinks at the most Instagrammable cafe Plum by Bent Chair.

Lahofer Winery, ChyBiK+KriSTof The Lahofer Winery designed by architectural firm CHYBIK+KRISTOF, is composed into the scenic South Moravian countryside scattered with vineyards. The structural scheme is based on the width of the row of grapevines and runs through the whole house. The wine making is concentrated in two horizontal buildings - the winery thus gives the impression of being lightweight in relation to the countryside. The design comprises three interconnected structures — the wine making facility, the company’s administrative base, and a visitor center that includes a tasting room. Meanwhile, a rooftop amphitheater will be capable of hosting public concerts and cultural events.

Cover Focus BLue houSe, anTireaLiTy The Blue House Project is a conceptual design of a summer house located on a rocky cliff. The name of the building pertains not only to the colour of the facade alone, but also to a pool that is integrated with the body of the building. Owing to its location, the water reservoir influences the space of the entire house and changes its nature depending on the recipient’s location. For the observer beyond the building, the pool is interpreted as a water facade of the building; the user inside the house perceives the pool as a ‘transparent’ room serving as a panaromic window (that allows one to observe both people swimming in the pool and the landscape filtered by the water surface), from the perspective of the terrace it is an infinity pool that forms a water viewing point for watching the surrounding wildlife. This 95 square metre-large house comprises a residential storey and a terrace that covers the entire roof space. The structure of the building is based on two construction walls supporting the weight of the overhanging part of the house and the space of the pool supported by a rocky slope.

Pan TreeToP-CaBinS, eSPen SurneviK PAN Treetop Cabins, created by architect Espen Surnevik are two A-frame structures at 431sqft each, located in the Eastern part of Norway, close to the Swedish border, a two hours drive north of Oslo. Owned by Kristian Rostad and Christine Mowinckel, the cabins perch 26 feet above the ground on steel poles sunk 20 feet deep into the bedrock below, providing stability when strong winds blow. The designer took inspiration from the region, and specifically from the comic strip by Finnish artist Tove Jansson featuring fairytale characters called the Moomins. His second source of inspiration, apparent in the design of a spiral staircase that leads up to the cabin, is the fire lookout tower, which Surnevik says is a part of the landscape in the forest belt that surrounds the northern hemisphere. Architect Espen Surnevik also chose the American typology of the A-frame lodge because it is “both intimate in its width and monumental in its height, and represented something basic with its triangular shape. Each cabin has interiors that are 28 feet long, 18 feet high, and 12 feet wide, and can comfortably accommodate up to six people. It also includes a mezzanine with a double bed, additional sleeping areas that are concealed within the interior walls, a small kitchenette and fireplace, and a bathroom with a toilet and shower.

LooP, fahr 021.3 Loop, by creative studio FAHR 021.3, is a concrete sculptural structure developed for the 10 th anniversary of the creation of the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto (UPTEC). Located in front of the university’s central building, the circular piece symbolises the mark in time and is made to last in the future as a symbol of the park. It was designed to be a silhouette capable of being a center in Asprela, mainly characterised for being a pole of great concentration of health and educational facilities, that generates a daily flow of people without many reasons for permanence by the absence of points of interest in the public space. In the combination of a concrete circle bench with an organic texture, Loop assumes the idea that repetition is never equal, the same round will never be the same. With each circle that closes new textures are generated, bringing their own identity. The meeting in the garden allows the conversation, democratises the themes, leaving without limits the participation of those who pass by.

The development of these towers, reaching heights of 228 meters, will open up new streets to create a multi-use, vibrant inner-city quarter, bringing together a healthy mix of work, living, relaxation and recreation. The new highrise complex will be integrated into the expanding city structure by incorporating the heritage-listed facades of the JunghofstraĂ&#x;e into the design and by making a multi-storey base building the connecting element of the entire site. Sonora houSe, daviT JiLavyan and mary JiLavyan A team of young architects and visualisers from Moscow, created the concept of the house for one family in the Sonoran desert of Mexico. The client envisioned a one family residence expressive of minimal geometries and bold finishes, while avoiding the ‘simply coloured box with windows’ housing style. The designers didn’t want to invent something new, but wanted to harmoniously combine the colour and shape. In the project they have used pitched roof with an internal gutter system. Also, in order to get away from the standard use of windows, they have scattered them in different shapes and sizes. So the resulting proposed volume is characterised by sculpturally pitched roofs, boldly blocked hues, and irregular windows. Despite the bright vision, it is tailored to fit in with the environment. Unfortunately, at some stage the project was suspended, but the designers were passionate about the idea of this concept, so they completed it.

Curvy eCo houSe, CraiG raCe arChiTeCTure The form of the house is entirely based on context. The curved front wall mediates the street facade by responding contextually to the neighbouring houses’ setbacks. This creates drama and delight, but serves a rational purpose to create room for a basement walk-out apartment while maximising second floor space. Exceptional air-tightness and above-code insulation keeps this house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The small windows on the north facade maintain privacy and minimise heat-loss, while the south facade is almost entirely glass designed to passively heat the home in the winter. A passive ventilation strategy cools the home in the summer. Durable and recyclable exterior cladding ensures this home will last with minimal maintenance and have a small environmental impact.

Whether your personal decorative style is eclectic, modern, traditional or rustic, nature has a colour palette waiting for you, and autumn is a cherished time of the year. As the weather brings a chill to the air, everyone feels like hibernating with feel-good colours and snug comforts. We love the Spice Palette-with the primary colour being Paprika. It seems just right for this time of the year as it is inviting and energising. It is traditional without being red. Contemporary without being orange. These hues are great foils to light-coloured upholstery. They also work really well with the “it colours of the moment-plum, raisin, and persimmon for an infusion of colour that gives a luxurious and timely feeling. It has been said that, when rs it comes to the colour wheel and colour pairings, colours like their neighbours work really well. Red and orange, as colour wheel neighbours, certainly exemplify this. Theyy are both energetic and bold, yet their subtle difference in warmth lets the colours be unique in their impact. Use it with powdery gray neutrals or with blue and white. Also, the dark tone of navy contrasts like a kind older brother to the more youthful burnt orange, and the pair has the beest of both worlds.

ffice is a place where work has to be done in a perfect manner with stringent deadlines and immense pressure. In such a stressed environment, if the rs are beautiful and pleasant, attractive and comfortable then there is a possibility that you will feel recharged, energised and get back to your creative self. The interiors of an office should be designed such that it helps in increasing your efficiency and productivity, and also helps in the organisation’s growth. Besides, keeping in mind employee preference, an office interior design is important for a better reason - it directly impacts employee productivity, which directly affects the organisation’s bottom line. Ideally, the workplace should be a space that allows people to focus and concentrate whenever needed, and to collaborate and communicate whenever needed. You also want a workplace that is physically and mentally comfortable so that employees can perform and function at their best. This is what today’s modern office design trends are striving to achieve. Anuradha Aggarwal, Creative Director, Studio Olives Cre puts it this way, “Every organisation demands a specific

ambience that will complement its business culture and employees’ expectations from their work space. The look and feel of the office space fuels productivity and revitalises the work force throughout the day. This makes it extremely important to create office spaces that are not only striking, but also enhance creativity and productivity of the employees. Factors like balanced colour schemes, space availability, a touch of flaura in the work environment definitely help in reducing the stress levels and establish positivity. It’s important to create something functional and appealing.” Warmth, openness and dynamism set the mood for the office. Infusing colours into the office inspires the design concept where a plethora of colours like orange, green, yellow should be set against the neutral all over the office. Textured walls, grey-matte tiles on flooring with other fine details on the door gives a boost to the mood. A colourful sofa will make the entrance area

ARSHAD SAYYED Quite a wanderer and always looking for the new in terms of style and design and perspective, Arshad grew up fascinated by the locals and took inspiration from them – may it be the chanawalla (chick peas seller), the gubbarawalla (balloon seller), the kasai (the butcher), or the chaiwalla (tea seller). All of these characters were enhanced into pieces of art in his head and that is what made him unique or outrageous as an artist! Although he holds a certificate in specialisation photography, this young artist always wanted to be an illustrator. A Facebook upload got him a lot of appreciation from varied people and known artists from the time, which drove him back into the field of art and design. He now has his own venture named Wallcano, which as a brand is doing a lot of work across the country in terms of creating brand identity environmental graphics, space branding, graffiti and wall paintings for commercial and private spaces. Venturing into space design with Wallcano, Arshad aims to make it a one-stop shop for your space, which is what he is currently working on.

MANAsi PAriKh A childhood spent in reading storybooks and drawing in quiet nooks, made Manasi love the world inside her head more than the one around her. When her imagination married literature, the scope was endless and she grew in love with that. The same love made her pursue an education in Animation Film Design from NID, Ahmedabad. In her final year, Manasi realised that her really talented seniors ended up taking up corporate jobs in Mumbai to pay bills as independent animation wasn’t easy to fund. Determined to change that, she set up Bechain Nagri, an artist collective where the group created and sold merchandise at music, comic, art and food festivals and used the money to fund their passion projects. After four years of Bechain Nagri and a year’s stint at Chumbak as lead designer, she went on to train at the Barcelona Academy of Art in traditional drawing and painting, which not only opened up her world, but also made her realise how special India was. With this fresh perspective of her country, she decided to come back home and revive her original dream of creating indigenous animation. Today she runs Bechain Nagri with a small team of four people, working towards an animated series for adults in Hindi, which they hope will set new benchmarks for animation in storytelling in India.

D

addy at the drop of a hat is a finely done artsy cafe and bar. With a total area of over 18,000 sqft, it spans over two floors including a terrace. This ethereal restaurant imbibes an out-of-the-ordinary scheme throughout. A space inspired by pop culture instilled with astonishing pieces of artworks and geometric flooring patterns all around the expanse. With an array of circular cut-outs and quirky graphics, Daddy breaks the monotony of the usual bar space. The sumptuous domain is classified into three zones - private (PDRs), semi-private (balcony, terrace) and public (bar). The segregation between these spaces is seamless and smooth with juxtapositioned imposing circular voids in walls and grand sturdy doors made in wood and glass. The partition wall with circular voids between dining and bar area is fabricated with a dual agenda of unifying the whole floor into one. The circular cutouts are accessorised with unique lighting elements circumscribed by rings, adding to the dynamism that the space stands as a stalwart for. The exposed dark grey ceiling inside gives a raw punk air to the arena. The nuance added through spectacular incorporation of artworks on various elements of design expounds

the concept of this restaurant, where modernised and creative art adds on to the young and edgy feel of the regime. A sleek gleaming balcony in the front, with monochromatic pattern tile flooring, creates a feeling of hallucination. The lighting here replicates unusual bird configurations brightening up the space. Bestowing a lush, fresh and vibrant vibe to the ambience, is the pensively designed terrace. Its lucid and moderate persona is assimilated through serene furniture and minimalistic use of material, rooting an unconstrained and breezy spirit to the atmosphere. The juxtaposition of yellow, grey and white in the flooring formulate a distinguished spirit. Display of protruding horse sculptures in red and blue, having plates etched with colourful graphics grant the walls an unconventional demeanour. The terrace bar, serving as the focal facet boasts of colourful graphical posters below the counter, supplementing the existing essence of vitality. Plants are hung from pendant lights to infuse connectivity between the built environment and the users. Daddy with all its eccentricities, puts together a wide range of concoction of exuberant design elements.

The cafe design is in sync with Mumbai’s Colaba area fabric in its raw, archaic and rustic feel. The fresco, ceiling and flooring have been left untouched to retain the old world charm. The ambience speaks loud and clear about the cafe being a relaxing space. The cafe has an English vibe attached to it and at the same time preserves the beautiful heritage site with unique architectural elements such as the curved brick roofing and the brickwork on the floor. The design is replete with rustic, industrial and outof-the-box design elements that complement the nostalgic vibe of the whole space. Be it the hipped roof ceiling with unfinished paintings or the brick flooring. The roofing and flooring have been preserved in its purest form and walls have an unfinished fish scaled texture adorned with various wall hangings depicting inventions and discoveries made in the past. The restaurant is spread across a vast area and houses plenty of wooden tables and comfortable wooden chairs and couches, strategically placed in while ensuring enough space to move around with ease. The chairs are alternatively upholstered in different shades of brown leather and checked fabric. The furniture is detailed with copper button work to

give an edgy look. The monotonous colour palette used add to the charm of the place, the muddy brown roof and flooring add to the indigenous effect of vintage interiors. Modest shades of brown and tan have been used for the furniture while the walls are adorned with beige hues. Amber colour representing fire and the blue colour representing ice plays an important role in recreating the idea of fire and ice. Amber coloured lighting for interiors adds depth and warmth to the spaces, while a hint of blue lighting in the bar is used for emphasis to add to the requisite quirk of the space. The amber cove lighting is fitted into the sofa backs so that only the effect is seen while the light source is invisible. The alfresco painting on the ceiling is lit up using spotlights as the focal point. The bar area witnesses the use of a distressed mirror, which reflects the bottles that are highlighted by blue lighting. The Garage Inc. does not miss a single chance to enthral with its rustic and indigenous design feel and garage inspired interiors. TIHG

he most common misconception amongst people is that you have to have a green thumb or be an interior designer to bring a beautiful touch of nature indoors. Actually, all you need is a little inspiration and a quick research of the plants that are perfect for indoors. House plants make us feel comfortable and even influence us to feel positive. Imagine a room without a plant, and with a plant, you can surely compare the difference of the atmosphere and the way you feel about the space. They add a touch of liveliness and freshness to indoor living. However, selecting and arranging plants in indoor

settings can be a bit challenging. Not all indoor plants have similar requirements nor do they grow in the same pattern. Some indoor plants can survive long spells of drought and neglect, while some require continuous care. Some indoor plants will look nice in an open living room and some will look good in smaller spaces. Some indoor plants will live happily in dark corners and some will be continuously looking for bright light. If you have any areas of your home that are unfilled, then adding different layers of plants can turn it into a whimsical plant sanctuary. So, are you going to bring some plants inside now? Afterall, #plantsmakepeoplehappy!

An Art Revolution Anpu Varkey

Several iconic artists of today have started off from the corners of bylanes and small streets. They are big names in their field, however, their first love always is street art. We present three such talents

A

npu’s work ranges within a large demographic initially beginning with doing oil paintings on canvases and then transitioning to making large scale public art projects throughout India. She repeatedly tries to rearrange her ideologies of art within public spaces. Her work is steeped within the necessity of a given space, its environment, the structure of a wall, the climate, and the people who live nearby. The streets have a discordant language; for her, finding a common thread that can unite people’s subconscious and then represent some of it through various seemingly simple images, is a timely quest. Her introspection lies within who is the viewer, what does it mean to make art in these times where most works are viewed through a social media gaze and very few people actually view it in its environment. She necessitates that painting in the public realm helps her find a sense of self-awareness, which helps her further activate her reason for doing it.

arshvardhan is a multidisciplinary visual artist. His works have mythology deeply embedded with a contemporary voice, giving birth to a unique style. Inkbrushnme, his studio has handled projects varying from art direction for animations to visuals for international brands. Harshvardhan has painted over a hundred murals. He is credited with painting India’s largest mural at Pune’s Yerwada jail. His style of visual art is a rather unconventional evolution. Harshvardhan says, “There is not a lot to enjoy while making a mural. The process is exhausting and tiring, but in this whole process, I get to talk to people from the region I paint and to listen to them is what I love. Hear their stories and a bit about their life is a good window to listen to someone out even if it is not related to work. That is very beautiful. It makes me realise that so many people want to talk, but do not have ears that will listen.”

ajority of Priyanka’s work is narrative based going around identity and its fluxes. They are not simply pictures or direct representations of individuals, but icons and indexes of identity. The reckless colours in her work communicate with tremendous intensity the ambiguous phenomenon of the role, simultaneously representing the lack of any discernible expression. Being an academician in architecture, her research revolves around exploring architecture’s psyche, through the production of wall murals in places, sites and settings, which engender spatial experiences that connect the viewer psychically, as well as perceptually and conceptually, to broader social issues and cultural phenomena. She resonates with the belief that art exists primarily to be enjoyed for its own sake. Priyanka eventually aspires to work on the idea of preserving the original fabric of neighbourhoods past through public art, facilitating richer dialogues between the citizens, what remains of their collective memories and their aspirations or revitalisation of historic city districts.

Emphatically Pleasing Spread across 2,500 sqft, the home designed by Architect Harsh Vardhan Jain and Saurabh Jain proves how luxury and functionality can blend perfectly to craft a space that is both timeless and fresh

“Since this was a developer built property, we inherited a structural system and fixed locations for wet points around which we had to design the whole project. While this posed limitations, we were brought in early enough in the project to design the layouts for the apartment so that we could achieve our desirable proportions for the spaces.

The bedroom is separated from the living room with a line of wardrobes and book shelves, eliminating the customary solid walls. The room opens out into a long deck that looks onto the greens outside and is hemmed in by green walls on two sides.

C

arried out with a single brief - fluid spaces filled with ample lights, the interior spaces were planned along a simple diagram where walls in one direction were kept as masonry and the perpendicular ones took on various forms such as cabinetry, screens, partitions as well as furniture. “Our design efforts while working with standard functional requirement of each spaces were towards minimising the number of walls, increasing flows between spaces and yet give each space its distinct character, shares Harsh Vardhan Jain of Harsh Vardhan Jain Architects. The designers achieved this through the use of colours, partitioning systems and varying forms of fixed and loose furniture. The entrance foyer and the living room are actually the core of the house and also from here all other rooms are accessed directly. The home welcomes you with a large solid wood door; comfortable George Nakashima style chairs sit

stylishly with an interesting coffee table by Ayush Kasliwal. The focus of the space is the metal and cane mesh screen that separates the entry foyer from the rest of the room and acts as mirror on one side and the TV console on the other. The designer followed the rhythm on the opposite wall with a shoe cabinet designed by them with the same cane mesh shutters. An interplay of wood, black granite and neutral white describe the tone of the walls of the living room. Decorative brass wall lights are mounted on the black granite that contrasts with the light while softening its glow. Mid-century modern style furniture pieces from Iqrup+Ritz and Differniture as well as Nakashima-esque solid wood custom furniture pieces, table mounted lamps, and a large Kashmiri rug give the living room the right amount of intimacy and eclectic style. An art by Nirakar Chowdhury dominates the main wall of the living room and adds abstraction and colour.

The stair to the lounge appears to almost fold out of the walls while being lightly suspended by a steel frame. It does not rest at its base, further enhancing its light floating nature.

The dining room is directly connected to the living space. The only separation is a traditional swing that works as both partition and a seat. “We have customised and fabricated the dining table in a live-edge solid wood plank suspended on a light and airy steel frame. The idea of keeping plants was to infuse a sense of outdoors indoors and since this space has an advantage of receiving natural light from both the kitchen and the living room, it will allow the greens to grow well,” shares Harsh Vardhan. The yellow painted wall becomes a receptacle for the morning sunlight and is enhanced by signed prints of M.F. Hussain’s Ganeshas. From the dining room, a custom fabricated steel stairs take you to lounge area, which is at the stilt level. This lounge, which catered to the owner’s requirement for entertaining his private guests, exudes a warm ambience of a ‘den’ through its leather furniture, wooden paneling and an art work by Nupur Chaube. Each bedroom in the house gets its own character and identity based on its size, function and location in the house. Placed towards the front, the master bedroom gets fenestration on two walls, which gives it most amount of natural light and a view to the trees outside. In fact the green painted wall in this room is inspired by the view of the greens. The bed and other pieces of furniture are all made of wood and placed against a backdrop of wooden wall paneling, creating a landscape of levels, that gives this room its feeling of warmth and intimacy. To feel the quirkiness, enter the guest room with a small seating area besides the bed and colourful artwork by Arjun Sara representing local architecture. This whole set-up has been curated through furniture pieces by Iqrup + Ritz and a custom designed console in addition to the Arjun Sara artwork.

o create the Sun House, architect Amita was inspired by the fiery nature of the sun. The fluid form of the house is shaped to preserve all the older existing trees, with emphasis on bold sweeping strokes and large overhangs that reflect within the interior spaces. Working within a tightly constrained site, the architect focused on creating an inward looking house, that draws the elements of nature towards itself. The exposed brick wall forms the central spine of the house changing its course as it moves to the double height fluid living space creating a dynamic and sweeping effect. Amita says, “We wanted the curved living space to be a sunken one with its lines flowing to the pool outside creating a poetic visual bridge with water and the amphitheatre-like seating. The double height doors of the living slide and fold to completely open the interiors to the outside, wherein one feels that the living spaces are a part of the pool. She further states, “We used a simple, minimal and locally available material palette that

allowed them to stay true to the architectural experiences while focusing on the craftsmanship and details as well as nature and the connection to the outdoors. Exposed concrete roof and floors lend a seamlessness to the interiors while also keeping the house cool in the tropical weather of Goa. Most of the glazing faces the north to bring soft light within the interiors. The overhands and sloping roofscapes not only respond to the heavy monsoon that Goa experiences, but also its varying slopes and angles generate unique spatial moments across the entire house. The entrance of the house is designed with a brick lined wall over a linear water body with large sun screens on the south wall to create both a reflective and performative mood as soon as one enters the house. The floating teak open riser stairs with its bass rods create layers of texture and materiality that flow though the entire house. With its Goan-Portuguese inspired traditional cement tiled flooring, local granite counters, a modern kitchen, and bright fresh furniture, the open plan dining and kitchen is designed to be a fun, fresh and light space that beautifully blends the local and international feel. Shaped around an internal courtyard on both sides, the kitchen and dining areas receive a lot of light, natural ventilation and a constant connection with the outdoors. On the first level the stairs end with an open plan mezzanine space that looks onto the double height sunken living. The unique lights were designed by the architect’s firm to be specific to this space, and were inspired from the architectural lines of the house. All the bedrooms open up through fluid sweeping white corridors that provide an

element of surprise on entering. Each bedroom has its unique connection to the outdoors, while the main master room has a large private terrace that looks onto a louvered courtyard on one side and the pool on the other side. Fitted timber joinery as well as hints of bold colour in textiles and art provide a contrasting warmth and a chic feel to the minimal and meditative architectural palletes. One of the most important spaces in the house are all the bath spaces as they are designed to create a strong connection to the fiery nature of materials with raw stone tiles and

top lit skylights that contrast with the fluid spatial lines of the spaces. The bar and poker room spaces around the pool side offer a mix of chic interiors with crafted furniture along with a strong connection to the tropical plants outside, both near the pool as well as the inner courtyards they look onto. The landscape around the pool although not large, takes its cues from the dramatic lines of the house to create spaces that flow in and out seamlessly, giving a dynamic, experiential and picturesque quality to the entire house. Can you define what Within is all about ? Sonal - Within is a dream, a sentiment and a passion at the same time. Bobbi and I have begun this journey called Within with an idea of timeless design, an emotion of keeping Indian craft at the forefront and the zeal of innovating all the time. What is your role at Within ? Bobbi - Sonal heads Design and I head the Business of Design. We are a constant source of support and critique for each other and that has been working well for Within! (laughs) How has 2019 been for Within ? What kind of projects have you completed and what are you currently working on ? Bobbi - Well, its been a great year and we are sure the best of 2019 is yet to come! Being a luxury interior design firm, we have designed and delivered various luxury homes and villas, and worked on various artsy furniture collections. We are constantly developing museum quality pieces of furniture which are showcased in premium exhibitions. Team Within also developed an exhibit with a unique concept as an amalgam of poetry and design. We are working on some very exclusive residences at the moment and in the process of developing fresh furniture and lighting collections. Lots of surprises in store! What trends do you think will dominate in 2020 ? Sonal - Firstly, functional interior spaces like lounges with open kitchens and studies or home offices are coming up in a big way because of need of interaction and digitalisation of work. Also, furniture as art and handicraft is gaining significance. Thirdly, we all must work towards greener homes. That is a need of the hour. Which era of design has inspired your product range and designing and Why ? Sonal - Inspiration is never just based on a style or an era. We are open to all that existence has to offer - nature, spirituality, cityscape, stories, history, culture, poetry, the arts, colours, jewellery, any random object / pattern we come across - everything actually and most of all, silence! Green House

Plotting the Patio If you are lucky enough to have a rooftop terrace - turning it into a terrace garden acts as an extension of your home. A sign of getting close to nature says Manjari Sharma of Wagma Designs

W

ith urbanisation, there is major shift from rural to urban area and due to space scarcity, apartments are becoming popular. It is also noticed that this lifestyle has disconnected people from nature. Therefore, when we have limited space for our gardens, roof or terrace garden is a perfect solution to connect with nature. To this Manjari adds, “It is important to bring nature into our daily lives. A terrace gives an appealing look to your space. When built perfectly, it gives an aesthetic and elegant architectural feel. Moreover, the integration of a terrace greatly affects the market value of your house.” Apart from being therapeutic, terrace garden can let you cultivate ornamental trees and flowers, and even your own vegetables. Rest assured, it is not as hard as you might think!

Let’s Get started

The first step towards having a beautiful terrace garden is the layout. Make a note - keep in mind the purpose for which you are designing a terrace garden. It is needless to say that, a simple layout design works best for small areas. Adding too many features or activities within a small area will not let you enjoy the joys of terrace garden to its fullest. However Manjari shares, “For the people who live in villa, a terrace is a blessing in disguise, we understand this fact. They have the leisure to play with too many elements and plants. Also, movement wouldn’t be a major hindrance.” But this doesn’t limit you to change your decision. Take the next step by waterproofing the roof and making it water-resistant and leakage-free, so that the building doesn’t suffer any damage. It’s your garden, show your creativity and bring in variation not only in plants, but also in the pots used. Make it environment-friendly and green in the true sense by using recycled pots.

TIPS ON HOW TO dO yOUR TERRACE Gazebo – Covered by a roof giving sense comfort and safety placed on wooden platform. Pergola – Its interlocked structure gives a feel of a much modern concept as the roof is played in geometrical patterns like beams crossing each other. It can be shaped into a design creating space for seating. Outdoor furniture – Using polypropylene fibre resistant to UV rays and weathering, using vibrant colours like turquoise, acid green, etc. decorate – Giving ambient lighting to the walls of the terrace along with that hidden lights used in gazebo or pergola structure, which doesn’t disturb the eyes of the user. Waterbody – A niche water body would add tranquility to the space. Green belt installation – Roof top gardens with wooden deck, use of artificial grass on flooring or as a beautiful vertical gardening installation with indigenous plants.
