GILDED GLAMOUR If there was a decade that epitomised unadulterated decadence, it was the roaring 1920s, of which the debonair art-deco decorating style is seeing a resurgence. Transpose a touch of that ritzy fun into the 21st century with lacquered and golden accents, exuberant furnishings and curvilinear fixtures that make a big statement – but pair them against softer backdrops, think creme wall coverings or monochromatic carpeting, for a balanced, modern twist.

SOFT EDGES A masculine decorative scheme isn’t limited to sharp corners and rough textures. Add a soft, delicate touch to your environs through sculptural accents and natureinspired shades. Move away from decidedly subdued colour schemes and embrace an energetic, uplifting ambience composed of vibrant shades. From soft pastel blushes to bold striking hues, the trend of pink is continuously spreading the world over. For those who are ready to take the plunge, pair the delightful tone with white and blue to make a statement. HEART OF THE HOME A place for life’s various occasions, the living room is worth every endeavor to keep it conducive and cosy
It’s 2019, and the living room has taken an additional role – on top of sitting room, reading nook, homework den, play pen, and all-around gathering space. “As more and more people work from home, the living room has become a co-working space,” says Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui of design studio Bean Buro. That’s not to say, however, that all living room design considerations point to making it primarily workspace-conducive. On the contrary, that our homes might cater to more screen-centric activities makes it all the more important to incorporate warm and characterful touches. “Society is nostalgic for past processes and handiwork – adding crafted materials to our spaces is very important to allow us to feel grounded,” says designer Sophie Ashby of West London-based Studio Ashby. Antiques, which are making a soft comeback, and earth-inspired palettes count for such touches. As Hong Kong-based designer, Peggy Bels, points out: “This 2019, trends are still in natural and organic materials – wood, stone, and soft organic fabrics.” As the ever-multifunctional room, the living area will no doubt evolve with the times – and with technology. All the while, its core purpose of facilitating human connections remain, and we’d benefit ourselves a great deal by taking design cues accordingly.

1. INSPIRATION: DOWN TO EARTH The Instagram-approved charm of bone-white minimalism may be here to stay, but in an era of screens it pays to look up and find vignettes of warm, characterful touches. Find inspiration in the elements – water, wind and fire, even flora and fauna, gemstones and rocks – to bring a touch of the wild world indoors. Deep colours, jewel tones, and pieces with history that draw from our natural environment inject a more lived-in look.
tips 24 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS
• Invest in multi-functional furniture with nature-inspired, tactile qualities. • Consider antiques, which are often priced similarly to highstreet finds but come in better quality. Bonus: they also age better.
AU NATUREL
Bring a touch of earthiness into a space with rustic hues - think dark burgundy, taupe and mustard; floral upholstery, meanwhile, add plenty of charm.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES As the gathering place for many of life’s moments and relationships, it’s important to go with a well-balanced palette for the living room – not too neutral as to be boring, neither too busy as to be overwhelming. “I always start by using neutral base tones, then adding in bolder pops of colour from paintings, fabrics, and sculptures,” says Sophie. Peggy concurs: “I always use natural, warm colours for the walls, mostly a palette of warm greys.” From there, approach colour addition through art, designer and antique furniture, or even accent walls, which help create depth in a room. Terracotta hues, various shades of green, as well as brass and metallic elements often tie together disparate pieces and create a sense of coherence and groundedness in a room. Darker feature walls work to a similar effect, contrasting against more neutral elements and allowing brighter touches to pop.

MIX AND MATCH

Pops of colour, sprightly patterns and lush textures are the keys to spicing up neutral-toned surroundings; GAN’s Mirage rug by Patricia Urquiola.

For a more inspired way to put together a colour palette, consider your own likes and inclinations. Kenny refers to this as the creation of a ‘poetic narrative’. “Our approach to developing the materials and colour scheme for the living room is often inspired by a poetic narrative that we develop with our clients’ interests – be it ‘seaside architecture’ that interprets the French blues of Brittany, or ‘autumn leaves’ that interpret the Japanese reds in Kyoto mountains,” he says. Don’t forget patterns and textures in the creation of your motif. Surfaces in marble and wood – drawn from the natural environment – are timeless options that create interest with subtlety. “Our approach to ‘pattern’ is often as a delicate layer integrated into the architectural setting,” says Lorène Faure of Bean Buro. “We prefer to subtly express the wood grains, stone textures, tactility of fabrics, and natural reflexivity of metals.” These natural touches also complement more colourful and graphic approaches to pattern, which often require an anchoring element.

3. FIXTURES AND FURNISHINGS

A solid living room, our experts unanimously agree, is comprised of three key elements: a good sofa, a coffee table, and well-considered lighting. “The sofa is the centrepiece of any living room – it’s where you relax, entertain, connect with people,” says Timothy Oulton. “If you invest in the right sofa, then everything else in the room can be built from there.” Get a sofa that’s comfortable, advises Kenny, and that will last for years to come. Coffee tables, meanwhile, anchor a living room, apart from creating surface space for collectibles as well as holding mugs of coffee (or glasses of wine). Statement pieces in metal, brass, or marble are great contrasts against the neutral tones of the walls and flooring, says Sophie. Timothy also suggests trunks, which helpfully double as storage. Finally, thoroughly consider lighting – from the way natural light changes throughout the day, to the mood you want to evoke with artificial light. Consider a key pendant light and complement it with ambient lighting through table and floor lamps, suggests Sophie, while “for a small space, I would recommend wall lights instead of table lamps to free up room.” Peggy recommends Sonder Living for their brass and black light fixtures, while Timothy recommends their Selenite pendant made of crystals – a mood setter and showstopper in one.

What about the television? In our experts’ words: conceal them. While an entertainment essential in any family home, TVs distract from efforts to connect. Both Peggy and Sophie resort to bespoke cabinetry to hide them away, simultaneously displaying other personal belongings such as books and photo frames. Should you insist on having the TV in plain view, however, “The Frame from Samsung – which looks like a framed art piece – is a good option,” says Peggy. The ways in which hidden tech benefits today’s Hong Kong home, however, can be found in smart features. “Smart home technology has allowed us to create more minimalistic spaces by reducing physical clutter,” says Kenny, citing fewer controls for curtains and lights, for example. “Voice control allows the living room to feel more responsive to the user, while circadian lighting – changing colour temperatures according to the hours of the day – allows for our design to be more sensitive to users’ well-being.” Furnishing one’s living room need not be rocket science, although it does require you to take stock of available space. As Sophie puts it: “It’s all about being clever with the space you do have.” UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

• Trends change very quickly and you don’t want to be stuck with things that feel dated a few years later. Draw on your love for selected objects, antiques or art; only choose things that you love and inspire good memories. • It doesn’t always have to be a financial investment. Instead, think of your space as a time investment – whether that’s looking to auctions for the perfect mid-century armchair or cabinet, or commissioning a local artist to weave a basket to add character to a space.

SCENE STEALING Let your personality dictate the design of the dining room, and don’t be afraid to embrace a little drama
If there is one area in the home that invites a touch of drama, it is the dining room. The stage upon which some of our most special moments play out, it is a space in which friends and families come together to share two of life’s great luxuries: food and time. And because it performs such a prominent part in the home, its interiors should be lavished with love and attention. Flexibility is also essential in the dining room, especially In Hong Kong, where the table might moonlight as somewhere for children to complete homework assignments, or even take an after dinner role as a bar or games table. No matter, what is most important is understanding how the space reflects your needs – and your style – and decorating accordingly.

1. INSPIRATION: EXPRESS YOURSELF Don’t be afraid to apply colour or pattern in the dining room – as a well-loved and well-used space it is primed to express your personality – and statement wallcoverings or a feature wall are an excellent way of doing so. Choose a palette and let it permeate, picking up accent hues in accessories like napkins or a runner and even on upholstery. However you choose to express yourself, have fun with it, visitors will enjoy the space as much as you do – and you will never have a dull moment at a dinner party.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES “Firstly there should be a clear design for your dining room,” says Johnny Wong, co-founder of boutique Hong Kong design studio FAK3. “Selecting the right colour is part of a whole list of considerations.” Darker walls and furnishings create a moody ambience, while lighter colours are more inviting. “In general, darker coloured furniture looks great against lighter tones as they allow the furniture to really pop,” Johnny adds. YC Chen, founder and creative director of Hong Kong-based interior design brand hoo, also advises starting from a neutral base. “I usually choose neutral colours like off-white, grey and wood tones,” he says, before adding, “and maybe a feature colour in dark green and blue.” Johnny suggests choosing one colour and carrying it throughout the room, but in different shades “depending on what mood you want to create”. Deep saturated blues work especially well in dining rooms with a lot of diffused lighting, while terracottas and muted pink hues continue to dominate.

“One of the most interesting materials we have been using in our projects is customised wallpaper,” explains Johnny. “We develop a piece of art and transform it into a wallpaper to provide a highly personalised space,” he continues. Florals and Chinoiserie designs are enjoying a moment in the spotlight and make a stylish statement, often acting as an artwork in their own right. And as with other areas of the home, contrasting fabrics and textures are key to add richness and depth to the dining space. Natural fibres pair beautifully, like linen with a thick, luxurious silk in complementary tones. 3. FIXTURES AND FURNISHINGS Naturally, the dining table and chairs are the main players in this space. Both YC and Johnny advise selecting these first and then building the space around them. In smaller spaces, curves can give the impression of being inside a much larger area, drawing the eye to their sinuous silhouettes and away from the rigid lines and corners of the room. For this reason, circular dining tables work particularly well, while also being practical. “One of the key trends I have noticed in dining room design is bespoke furniture,” says Johnny. “This allows you to tailor the experience, from the table and the chairs to the lighting and the accessories.” Mismatched chairs – while maybe not to everyone’s taste – make a stylish statement, while at the same time allowing you to assert your identity in a room that welcomes it. The look is best achieved by sticking to a singular colour or selecting seats with similar silhouettes, or, for a low-impact approach, try changing up just those chairs at the head of the table. Regardless of whether the set is identical or not, YC suggests opting for cane or rattan furniture, unless opulence is your aesthetic, in which case velvet works beautifully. Illuminations are equally important, especially when it comes to creating the appropriate mood for the dining space. Ensure adequate light sources that offer

both direct and indirect diffusion. If the table performs a multipurpose role, you will need to make sure that there is enough illumination for certain tasks, such as homework, and that the light can be lowered or alternative options are available for dinner parties or romantic evenings in. Dimmer switches are a most welcome addition in this instance. And as the stage is already set for drama, why not up the production levels with a scene stealing pendant light? Whatever your interior scheme, there is one to fit, from a sculptural mid-century minimal affair to a traditional chandelier, dripping with glitz and glamour. Don’t be afraid to express yourself fully, this is the space to do it in.

It is always easier to be more flexible with the lighting. • Artwork is an important addition to the dining room. NOURISHING STYLE A space where form meets function and creativity flows, the kitchen encourages bold interior decisions and designs
A place of creativity and spirit, the kitchen is among the most important areas of the home. For too long seen as a purely functional space and sealed off from public view, delineations between cooking and dining areas are being broken down as the act of making a meal to share with friends and family is elevated. Founder of Hong Kong-based design studio Parti Limited, Kelvin Kong, explains: “The kitchen has always been an integral part of the home, especially for Chinese families.” He notes that, as the place where food is prepared, it naturally becomes an extension of social gatherings, and current trends reflect this concept. “One can get a glimpse of the intimate dynamics of a Chinese family simply by looking at the kitchen and dining area of the home,” says Kelvin, and the same is true of any family, regardless of their provenance. Ellie Bradley, owner and creative director of Hong Kong-based interior design studio Atelier Lane summarises the kitchen’s significance perfectly: “The kitchen is where meals are created – it fuels our bodies, minds and souls.”

1. INSPIRATION: BREAKING BARRIERS The kitchen should not be thought of as a separate space – neither physically nor figuratively – but rather as a place in which lives are lived, much as they are throughout the home. As open-plan becomes de rigeur, so too do design elements permeate each connected area. This means that materials more commonly associated with dining or living rooms, like wood, metal and glass, find a natural home in the kitchen, visually uniting the place where food is prepared with that in which it is enjoyed.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES Colour is an excellent ingredient in any kitchen, and because it is such a dynamic space, it allows you to be more playful with pigments than you might be elsewhere. As with cooking, it is an area that encourages, and rewards, creativity. “Don’t be afraid to work with colour, especially on your kitchen cabinets,” says Ellie. “Colours trending at the moment include mid to deep greys, blue tones such as navy and shades of green from forest through to sage and peppermint,” she says, adding, “This is a great way to inject personality into your kitchen and really create the perfect place to cook.” Hong Kong-based interior designer, stylist and curator Aviva Duncan agrees: “I love burnt orange, rust and greens in a kitchen as these have a direct reference to nature.” As with every area of the home, balance is key in the kitchen. “Dark paint colours are becoming more popular because they help hide dust and imperfections,” says Alain Wong, founder and design director of Hong Kong interior design company Comodo Interior & Furniture Design. “However, to create a spaciousness in the kitchen area, balancing the dark and light colors is very important as well,” he adds.

The materials employed in the kitchen will perhaps have to work harder than in any other area of the home, so choose them wisely. “Embrace a wide palette of materials,” says Australian interior designer Greg Natale. “Bring warmth with metals, timber and glass. The coming together of all these creates a more dynamic interior and eschews the cookie-cutter look,” he adds. Both Ellie and Alain mention engineered stone for benchtops and splashbacks, which comes in a variety of colours and finishes, is solid and durable and highly resistant to heat and scratches. Solid wood is more expensive and harder to maintain, but it does have a timeless appeal and, if properly cared for, can age beautifully.

3. FIXTURES AND FURNISHINGS “When it comes to designing and decorating kitchens, the first thing I do with my clients is really unpack how they live in their homes and what role the kitchen plays in that,” says Greg. “Some casually entertain in the kitchen, for others it is a family hub and much of the morning and evening is spent in this area – before we design we really invest in understanding how it is used and that helps us avoid applying a one-size-fits-all approach to the design solution,” he says. That said, there is a prevailing tendency towards open kitchens. “That means we are designing island benches and work areas to look more like beautiful pieces of furniture rather than large generic kitchen islands,” Greg explains. He advises spending time considering the door and drawer pulls and handles, which will help elevate these functional pieces to aesthetic new heights.

“Always go for furnishings and accessories that best fit your style of cooking and usage,” advises Kelvin. “Every inch of space counts in Hong Kong, so I would choose accessories that maximizes the usable area for food preparation and storage.” Aviva agrees that appliances are important. “Kitchen equipment is a good investment,” she says, adding, “good quality appliances last for years, so go for the big brands.” Lighting is also an important element of kitchen design. “A good kitchen should have sufficient direct lights for cooking and perhaps some indirect lighting to bring out the materials in the interior design,” says Kelvin. Ellie takes it one step further, incorporating the illuminations into the aesthetic outlook of the area. “Adding a feature pendant light in addition to task lighting adds style to your kitchen,” she explains. “It’s like adding jewellery to our outfit. It adds a bit of sparkle and interest to what is otherwise a functional area of the home.” “And buy beautiful pots and pans which become part of your look and don’t need to be hidden away,” says Aviva. “I favour Le Creuset in a contrasting colour to your decor.”

BATHROOM BRILLIANCE Sustainability and technology are the trends of today, but when it comes to the bathroom, it’s all about making it your own
Bathrooms are having a moment. Increasingly less about functionality, not only have they become places to luxuriate and to escape from the craziness of daily life, but places that offer ample opportunity to showcase your sense of style. “Every home should have areas where you can escape and retreat from the rest of the world, and an indulgent bathroom can be this calming space,” says interior designer Timothy Corrigan. “There are so many beautiful options for stone, tile and fixtures that there is no reason that the bathroom should not be just as special as the most public room in your home.” Cue statement-making tiles, textures and accessories, design-led fixtures and unexpected hues to brighten up your bathroom and make your washroom a worthy place to escape to, complete, of course, with the most modern of conveniences.

1. INSPIRATION: MAKING A STATEMENT / FUN & FUNCTIONAL ALL THAT GLITTERS
A splash of gold never fails to elevate rustic interiors. Consider the Hidden floor mirror from Porus Studio or AYTM’s Frustum marble candle holder.
Functionality lies at the heart of every bathroom, but there’s plenty of room for fun, too. Art, statement tiles or a standout mirror add personality. Even wild wallpaper works well, particularly in a powder room where steamy showers and hot baths don’t up the humidity. “Your bathroom is a functional spot in your home, but that doesn’t mean it can’t make a design statement,” says Hong Kong-based designer Anji Connell of ACID+. She’s not the only one. Bathrooms have the potential to make a big impression and increasingly we’re seeing the use of deep, dark tones, hardware to evoke an industrial, brutalist edge, and the use of asymmetry for impact.
tips 86 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS
• Functionality and safety are paramount in the bathroom, much more so than in any other space. • Lack of attention to detail is easily noticed in a bathroom so design should be immaculate.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES Colours and textures can be the best way to make an artistic statement in a bathroom, whatever its size. “Ambience can be enriched with different types of materials, such as hand-painted wallpaper for powder rooms, different textured marbles to create drama for the bath and shower areas, and tiles blended with mosaics and glass panels,” says Denise Lau, CEO of interior furnishing platform colourliving. “Innovations in tiles and composite stones are allowing for more beautiful options than ever before,” adds Timothy who highlights materials such as mother or pearl and precious stones now offering opportunities for luxurious wet-area options, more akin to a spa that a personal bathroom. Interestingly, it’s deeper shades that are in vogue. And these are increasingly matched with similarly dark fixtures or contrasting bright and shiny options, the latter the choice for Denise who says, “It’s a trend to match marbles of a dark palette with special tap finishes like dark bronze, matt copper or antique gold.” Dornbracht and Gessi both have some striking examples in their current ranges. There’s also lighting to consider. Ed Ng of AB Concept suggests having options. “A bathroom should have two colour temperatures: warm for the long, hot baths, and cold for clarity when you are cutting nails or applying make-up.”
BATHROOM | DECORATION
“It’s important to keep a similar look to all of the fittings in the bathroom, but you should be able to customise them to fit your unique style and taste,” says Timothy who has created a collection for THG Paris that can be totally customised according to personal taste. Ed agrees that keeping things consistent is key. “Bathrooms are relatively small spaces and fittings and fixtures are very prominent, so mixing different styles is hardly ever an option.” Whatever the size of the space, storage is always essential. Clutter never says comfort and calm, as a bathroom should, so see how you can cleverly incorporate additional cupboards or, as Ed suggests, make use of ceiling space. A desire to be sustainable is also having increasing influence on the choice of fixtures and furnishings. “We are seeing fewer requests for rain shower heads and multiple body sprays,” says Timothy, attributing the change to a greater consciousness of water usage. Along with this trend is an increased interest in technology with smart toilets in particular growing in popularity. “Technology must pamper and enhance both comfort and the bathroom experience,” Ed says. The smart mirror is certainly one tech addition he can get on board with. “I expect to see mirrors with features such as augmented reality and an Internet connection.” For Denise, a smart mirror is already an integral part of her bathroom setup. “I start the day with an awakening shower with waterfall and pulsating massage while catching up on global news through the media function of my illuminated mirror cabinet,” she says of her bathroom that is “a multi-purpose area of my home.” Ed adds, “I like to listen to music when I take a bath.” Couple all that with the most basic essentials, such as candles and scents, for an all-round pampering. 88 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS

BATHROOM | EXPERT ADVICE
ED NG AB CONCEPT abconcept.net
Photography by Reylia Slaby
• The bathroom should make you feel at ease with yourself, and pampered. You are naked here, vulnerable, in your natural state. Comfort is of the essence. • Sustainability isn’t so much about design as about clever use of materials. Opt for ecofriendly materials and production methods with a lower carbon footprint – timber and stone are making a comeback, but also materials made, for example, from recycled plastic. • There should be a clear demarcation between wet and dry areas, even in small bathrooms.

“SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS ART ELEVATES THE BATHROOM TO A PLACE OF BEAUTY”

• Something as simple as hanging a painting or other form of real art elevates the bathroom from the utilitarian to a place of indulgence and beauty. • If space allows, an elegant freestanding tub conveys the feeling that relaxation is taken seriously. • Beautiful plumbing fixtures can add another level of detail. • Ample lighting is an essential consideration. Direct lighting is important at face level for make-up and shaving; overhead lighting alone casts shadows on your face.

STYLISH SANCTUARY Escape the digital trappings of modern life in a beautifully conceived bedroom, where personality and peace of mind unite
In our constantly connected world, the bedroom provides a rare place of detachment from the digital world, a space in which we can unwind and escape from the stresses associated with modern life. This is reflected not only in design trends but increasingly in the way we organise our interiors, the latter largely inspired by the popularity of Marie Kondo’s KonMari method, which has encouraged us to take a more mindful approach towards the way we experience the space we inhabit and give greater consideration to the items that also occupy our homes. Ultimately, as one of the most intimate areas of the home, our bedrooms should be both pleasurable to be in and instill a peace of mind. As Frank Leung, founder and principal director of one of Hong Kong’s leading studios via. architecture, says, “A home is a sanctuary from the tense urban life – and the bedroom is the ultimate sanctum for rest and rejuvenation.”

1. INSPIRATION: STYLISH STORAGE A foundational element of any bedroom is storage; how and where we put everything from clothes to coveted curios plays an integral part in interior design, especially in a city like Hong Kong where space is in limited supply. Invisible or integrated storage is favoured for essentials like bed linen, but at the same time there is a move towards open wardrobes, which are not only practical but can act as a stylish statement in their own right, adding interest and personality to the bedroom. HEAD SPACE

tips
• Let your outfits do the talking with open wardrobes that are elegant, smart and give you plenty of room for creativity. • Opt for calming, restful and fresh shades like soft blue, lilac, dove grey, sage green, lavender and even white to create a tranquil atmosphere.
2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES
Photography by Reto Guntli | Living Inside

“A bedroom should feel sublime and relaxing,” says iconic American designer Kelly Wearstler. “Of all the rooms in a home, it needs to be calming and restorative. Neutrals from decadent creams to cool dove grays evoke a mood of sexy sophistication that is simple yet iconic.” “I always recommend taking a palette of neutrals loaded with texture, and embracing some seasonal hues in the form of cushions, throw, blankets or an accent chair that you can refresh when they feel tired,” says Amrita Khanna, founder and principal designer of boutique Hong Kong interior design company Zip Code 888. “For bedrooms which do not have a lot of natural light, chartreuse, ginger, ochre or ‘Amber Coast’ from Dulux will lend warming, inspiring and uplifting vibes,” says Frank, adding that for those wishing to add a playful tone, vibrant shades like yellow, orange and raspberry can be introduced through multicoloured wallpaper or bedlinen. Amrita agrees. “For that splash of colour I am loving terracotta or sun-kissed hues like burnt orange, even a splash of primrose yellow, to liven up a bedroom,” she says. “Mix textures rather than patterns,” advises award-winning British interior designer Katharine Pooley. “Cashmere bed throws and silk and linen cushions are wonderfully tactile and inviting textures,” she adds. “Silk comes in vibrant hues because its fibres absorb the intensity of dyes very well,” Frank says, adding that it looks particularly impressive when used in duvet covers, pillowcases or rugs. “Trims, fringes and tassels on curtains, cushions, chairs and bedding are making a comeback,” adds Amrita. “To add a spot of glamour, accessorise with matt ceramics or metals with patina in organic shapes,” she says.
REST ASSURED
Fun can be had with stronger hues such as red, yellow, and orange to add character to your space.

BEDROOM | DECORATION
The bedroom is one of the most personal places in the home and its arrangement should reflect this. Antiques, pre-loved and sustainably sourced furnishings work exceptionally well in such a space, infusing it with a depth of design and exhibiting an elevated sense of style. “There should be a balance of size, colour, pattern and texture,” says Kelly, adding, “So much time is spent in the bedroom, it is truly one of the most important spaces to design in a home.” “Following on from the boho trend of layering in fashion, I see a revival in combining antiques of different periods, which, when expertly assembled, come together to create an interesting space that feels like it has been curated over years,” says Amrita. This is excellent news, as most interiors are the collective result of lifetimes accumulated under one roof, and a less rigid approach to design rewards those with eclectic tendencies. Frank is also an advocate of adding your own character to the mix. “Personalise your bedroom!” he says. “Everything from a tray of your favourite perfumes to fresh flowers and travel mementos are all potential styling items,” Frank explains. Lily Wong, of Hong Kongbased Lusso Design Limited, agrees, adding: “Choose a beautiful piece of artwork, arrange some family photos, add flowers or candles. Give the room a feeling of comfort and intimacy.” Lighting is imperative to creating a calm atmosphere, which in turn will help you to switch off after a long day. Direct lighting should be avoided, according to Frank, who suggests diffused illuminations and dimmer functions wherever possible. Ambient reflective lighting is ideal for the bedroom as it radiates a soft, warm glow that is cosy and inviting. “At via., we always encourage clients to follow their instincts and express their unique personalities and tastes when decorating, especially to surround themselves with art and objects that they love,” says Frank. “This is especially true when decorating a bedroom.” 106 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS

The best bed linen soothes and cools, and I love to incorporate luxurious details like coloured border, piping or monogramming. • For tranquillity, be sure to layer your lighting scheme with a mixture of low-level lighting throughout the room.

• Bring in pieces that reflect your distinctive personality and lifestyle. A home should be filled with pieces that inspire. • Hierarchy and scale are so important. Too many starlets in one room creates needless drama. The goal should be to curate a cohesive dialogue while still allowing statement pieces to shine.

• Try to discipline yourself to keep your cell phone, computer, television and exercise machine out of the bedroom – you’ll love having a room dedicated to reading, sleeping and romance. • Furniture should fit the room it lives in and this is particularly true for bedroom furniture. Don’t choose a heavy, large bed and dresser for a small bedroom. If the ceiling is high, a tall headboard will help to visibly bring it down to size.

CREATIVE ZONE Regardless of the space you have to dedicate to a study, make it work hard for you through clever design
Few areas in our lives need to arouse inspiration like the study. Whether incorporated into a larger space or a room in its own right, a home office is where industry, influence and insight meet, and aesthetic purity acts as an aid to personal productivity. This can be achieved through a variety of means, from intelligent organisation, through applied colour theory and by a considered approach to furniture and accessories. Regardless of what objectives you set out to achieve in your study, you can easily make it work hard for you, improving not only the quality of your output but also your quality of life.

1. INSPIRATION: GET CREATIVE Not every home will have a dedicated study space, so flexibility and creativity are essential when employing a smaller spot. Choose furnishings that allow the light to stream through, but don’t be afraid to add flourish or flair, perhaps through a statement shade or a mix of metallics. Just because this is an area for activity doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it, in fact, the more you enjoy spending time in your home office, the more you will get from it, so prepare to be playful as well as productive.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES Our physical environment has a significant impact on our psychological well-being, and this extends to the pigment of paint on the walls that surround us. Hong Kong-based interior decorator and personal stylist Lucia Tait Tolani is well aware of this, having appointed a rich blue for her home office. “I used a shade of cobalt in my study, and I've since heard that blue is an intellectual color that stimulates the mind and boosts productivity,” says Lucia. Indeed, various studies have found that blues are optimal in work environments as the primary shade promotes communication, trust and efficiency. It also has a naturally calming tone, which can open the mind to new ideas. If your occupation requires you to be detail-oriented, consider red hues as these have been shown to increase productivity, motivation and memory. “A dark wall colour like black, navy or grey instantly makes a study feel cool and moody, and rows of books look very effective against a dark backdrop,” says renowned British furniture designer Timothy Oulton. Texture has as much of a place in a home office as it does in any other room, and can be introduced through textile wall hangings and plush rugs; anything that elevates the homely aspect of the space over its role as a workstation is ideal. Wood lends an organic flavour to proceedings, while marble adds a luxe appeal and lucite allows light in. “Custom built-in bookshelves can house your library, paperwork, and mementos – painted wood works well here,” says Lucia. “I also love a set of etageres in a gold or brass tones for open book storage.”
STUDY | DECORATION
“A study is somewhere to reflect, to contemplate and to plan,” says Timothy. “It’s an intimate space and it needs to feel truly like you. Only choose pieces that you love and feel inspired by, rather than getting swept up in the latest trends,” he adds. “I believe the study should feel like part of the home and not an office,” says Lucia, who emphasises that the same amount of attention should go into this area as, say, a living or dining room – just because it is conceived to perform a specific purpose does not mean it should be treated as purely practical. “Stay away from metal filing cabinets and traditional office chairs , and find comfortable upholstered seating,” she adds. Before even considering how you would like your home office to look, it is wise to think about how you want it to work for you. Lucia agrees: “The function of the room plays a big part in the design process.” If you have the space, a separate study can benefit from a bearing marked aesthetic departure from the rest of your home. However, if you are incorporating an office into another part of the home, you might want to make the transition less discernible so that it is not distracting. “Make sure you have ample light sources,” advises Lucia. “Weather and time affect natural light supply, you want to make sure you have options that match your tasks – dimmable overhead for daytime, and a good desk lamp for reading and writing,” she adds. A sculptural essential oil diffuser is a valuable addition to any desk, its sundry scents capable of creating different moods and, in doing so, aiding productivity. Open storage works well in a study as it means that everything is visible and to hand. However, if you know you lack the time or have no desire to tidy up your office, opt for a desk with drawers that allow you to hide a multitude of sins. Alternatively, curtainfronted shelving toes the line between having everything on display and offering a way to conceal clutter. Lucia says, “A plush rug goes a long way – after all, most of us are barefoot at home.” 122 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS

children’s room
A SAFE HAVEN Fun, flexible, and enduring, the children’s bedroom is their fort in the home The bedroom is one of the first spaces a child will get to know – it’s where they’ll learn what it means to listen to mommy and daddy, discover consequences to actions, and dream up life’s many adventures. It’s a place for rest as it is for play, for learning as it is for day dreaming. Because children grow so quickly, it’s important to create a space that will evolve with their early years. “One should plan for a longer period of time,” says Jason Yung, architect and founder of Jason Caroline Design, adding that a child’s space need not look like a kindergarten. “Avoid turning the child’s room into a bright and colourful playground with padded wall panels right after you have a newborn.” Instead, create flexibility by investing in timeless pieces, and then slowly involve the children when they’re older. Amrita Khanna, founder and principal designer at Zip Code 888, says she’s “increasingly coming across teens and tweens requesting rooms they can grow into while reflecting their youth – they don’t want rooms that seem childish.” They won’t be childlike for long, after all. Until then, however, this is the room they’ll know to be home. Design it to be a fun, safe haven, and one day they’ll look back on it with fondness as well as gratitude – hopefully – for being a key part of their childhood.

Neutral-hued accessories, wooden finishes and monochromatic surfaces form a timeless look. Spruce it up with brighter tones such as La Chance’s Cross rug from Archetypal.
1. INSPIRATION: MAGICAL WHIMSY They’re young for only so long, so don’t be afraid to opt for playful details. The trick is to be selective about which items work best with a kiddy treatment, and which are better off as timeless pieces. Parents are increasingly opting for neutral tones as base colours and then vying for colour in items that can be easily switched around, such as beddings and curtains. Consider asking yourself: what bold colours wouldn’t I mind seeing in my own bedroom? Use your own aesthetic as a kickoff point and see how this translates in the context of a child’s room.

• Consider toys you don’t have to throw out after your child outgrows them – wooden blocks, linen rugs and stylish stationery always have a place in your home. • Colour-code and label storage to help children easily find what they’re looking for.

2. COLOURS AND TEXTURES The children’s room makes for a canvas for bold colour choices; yet, you don’t want to overwhelm you child. “It’s important for a child’s bedroom to be a place of quiet relaxation that doesn’t excite their senses too much,” says Amrita. Frank Leung, founder and principal of design studio via., concurs. “Colours should inspire but not over-stimulate,” he says. “After all, it’s their bedroom and they need to sleep.” Instead, strike a balance by opting for softer, more timeless shades for walls, carpeting, and furniture. “A careful use of white, a wooden floor and finish, plus black and white help neutralise the multi-coloured items in the room, such as books and toys,” says Frank. Save bright hues for pieces you can switch around, such as bedding, cushions, and wall décor. For young children with favourite cartoons, subtlety is key, suggests Max Lam, founder and creative director of Max Lam Designs. “Children grow fast and their favourite things always change,” he says. “What we would do is take partial references of the character and make them part of the design.” Soft and padded textures are practical inclusions, too. Dutch designer Marcel Wanders cites matelassé, a material that involves weaving or stitching and appears quilted or padded. “Matelassé is a wonderful material – it’s durable, easy to clean, and feels nice to the touch,” he says. Natural materials, on the other hand, lend the room more character. “I like to keep materials natural and organic, sticking to linens, textured cottons, wool, rattan and wood,” shares Amrita. “Lighter colours with a play on texture and pattern also create an interesting space.”

3. FIXTURES AND FURNISHINGS
134 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS

A host of considerations come into play when deciding on furniture for a child’s room. “Use freestanding furniture for nurseries, as babies grow very fast, and you’ll soon need to replace old pieces with larger ones,” says Jason. Essentials include custom-made furniture, tables and chairs with adjustable heights, and transformable bunk beds and loft beds. “There’s no better solution for a child’s room than a loft – especially in Hong Kong, where space can be tight. Plus the ladder or climbing is fun for kids.” Speaking of mess: don’t forget storage, whether built into furniture or as standalone containers that will encourage kids to tidy up after themselves. “Have adequate storage – open for easy access to everyday items, and closed storage for not-so-commonly used ones,” advises Frank. Amrita adds that the room’s functions also help inform the furniture pieces worth investing in. “If a lot of time is spent studying, I would design a desk to be generously sized, ergonomic, and with functional storage.” As well, don’t forget safety. Marcel’s furniture line for children, Cybex, was designed with such considerations in mind. “Meeting safety requirements was one of our first priorities,” he says of their collection, which includes a high chair, rocker, bouncer, and accessories for young tots. “After that’s taken care of, we were free to explore all other ideas.” Where fun is concerned, there’s no going wrong with whiteboards. “They’re a practical solution for little kids as they all love to draw,” says Jason. Ultimately, with every design choice, simply keep the child’s needs, personality, and penchant for adventure in mind. “Encouraging fun and creativity is of utmost importance.”

BRING THE INSIDE OUT As an extension or addition to the home, the outdoors are a luxury – and a functional one at that
From entertaining to unwinding, gardening to – yes – even hanging laundry, the great outdoors is fit for a variety of functions. Suffice to say, this luxury is best put to work. Over the years, design innovations mean the size of a space is no longer a restricting factor in our use of it; moreover, as calls for sustainability grow more popular, homeowners are also becoming more thoughtful about how they furnish their outdoors. Weather considerations, for one, have risen in priority as of recent. “As the weather gets more severe, typhoon-safe designs are critical,” observes Rowena Gonzales, principal of eco-conscious interior design firm Liquid Interiors in Hong Kong. “Safety comes first, and clients are willing to get structural engineers to verify the safety of impermanent outdoor structures.” Ultimately, the outdoors can be as functional and practical as any other space in the home. “Outdoor spaces should be used,” says Regina Kwok, creative director of Hong Kong interior design studio Artwill. “They should be practical for the needs of the family.” All of which can be achieved – it takes only a little imagination and creativity.

1. INSPIRATION: ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND SUNNY INTO THE WILD
Raw, rustic fixtures set just the right tone for your outdoor spaces.
Amplify your outdoor space with matching wares and colours. Bust out the bright yellows and sunny oranges, the searing greens and puncturing aquas – no other space lends itself to as much fun and ease in decorating. With furnishings and tableware, accessories and planting, think free-flowing rather than rigid. It’s all about creating a space you can use with utmost comfort. Go all out. With the outdoors, you have every permission.
tips 146 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS
• Mirrors do a great deal to make any space feel larger – the outdoors included. Incorporate them in large or small sizes depending on your space and the look you want to achieve. • Go for enduring and easy-to-clean accessories; think cushions in grey and beige, or materials in canvas and vinyl.
2. MATERIALS AND TEXTURES In selecting colours, materials and textures, consider the location of your outdoor space and whether shading is available. “The darker the material, the more it will absorb heat,” says Rowena. “Keep dark colours to a minimum unless your space is mostly in the shade.” More colourful approaches, meanwhile, are best relegated to items that can be stored away – picnic and table ware, for example, and accessories like cushion coverings and throws. “Vibrant colours will get washed out by the sun easily,” says Rowena. “Colourful items should be small and easy to store, to keep its colourful vibrancy.” For everything else, there’s classic earth tones and natural textures. Richard Miers, an award-winning garden designer from the UK, points to their reliability and sustainability: “I use natural materials as much as possible, such as hard wood and natural stone. They take on a lovely aged patination when exposed to the elements.” Woods are especially favoured for outdoor spaces. Keith Williams of Nievera Williams recommends ipe or teak, while Regina recommends hardwood, which maintains its form through windy and rainy seasons. But don’t forget to factor in maintenance. “Darker shades of wood, like natural oiled teak, will require regular maintenance – oiling once a month during the sunnier months,” Rowena points out. Go beyond aesthetic considerations with plants that bear fruits and vegetables, too. “Mix edible plants, culinary herbs, and fruits with the other plants,” advises Richard. As well, incorporate pops of colour with seasonal florals – or do as both Richard and Keith do: don’t be afraid of “going green on green.” “I remind my clients that green is a colour – and the most restful one at that,” says Richard. “As long as the plants are healthy, sometimes green is all the colour you need.”
Nievera

3. FIXTURES AND FITTINGS With a space that can be as stripped down or versatile as desired, function will best dictate investments for our outdoor space. “If socialising is your main goal, a sofa set around an outdoor fire pit can enhance that experience. If individual relaxation is what you’re going for, sun chairs are more suitable,” says Rowena. Don’t scrimp on quality, and opt for pieces that don’t rust easily and weather well in the sun. Cushions and stuffing, for example, should be made for outdoor weather. “If the quality is good, it can be left outside without a cover – furniture tends to stay covered after a few minutes of rain, and easily get moldy in Hong Kong humidity.” One thing you can’t do without is seating. Consider a lounger or bar chairs, or even a daybed – “just to be able to disappear, relax, or nap – a must!” says Keith. He recommends a chaise longue for additional entertaining room, and looking to Everything Under the Sun for multifunctional outdoor pieces. And as the one most flexible area for the full spectrum of nature, the outdoors is the best place to incorporate them. Consider water features, such as small fountains or ponds. Says Richard: “I like to add water to a garden, either for the soothing sounds that mask other noises, or for the reflections of the sky.” Rowena, meanwhile, suggests multipurpose plants: “Jasmine comes with olfactory benefits, while guava climbing vines provide food and shade.” Also look out for plants that absorb heat, and go for “larger trough planters rather than individual pots for stability, and to hold enough soil so that the plants do not dry out easily on extremely sunny day,” she says. Fleurs.hk is a good place to start. What about more practical considerations, such as drying laundry? There’s a piece for that: “Use retractable laundry hangers (lifestyleclotheslines.com.au) that can come down from the ceiling so that floor space can still be used by other items,” says Rowena. 148 | HO≤E SOLUTIONS

Fleurs.hk是不錯的購物點。 Rowena說:「伸縮式晾衣架(lifestyleclotheslines.com.au)可隨時騰出空間擺放物件。」

LAST LOOK
FAIR PLAY It is a quintessentially contemporary, timelessly cool palette that’s having a moment, but all-white interiors take serious savoir-faire to dress up just right. Play to gritty textures like ceramic, clay and marble for a layered look, while cosy, natural pieces like dark woodcarved tables, handmade pottery, vintage collectibles and potted plants are great for injecting visual interest and warmth. The finishing touch? Expansive windows lending to a sun-drenched oasis.
