Editor’s

Note

Have you ever wondered where you’d be in life if you had made different choices? At our editorial meeting last month I asked my team this question. I had put up this question on a big screen in the conference room, instantly lit up into a Bollywood kinda set up; the team, started sharing several stories about their life and destinations they want to be. At the end of the discussion, I realised that all of us, having a creative bend of mind, wanted to be in Paris or Milan. Inspired by their dream destinations, I decided to focus this issue on design destinations of the world. The issue is loaded with incredible brands and places that should be on top of every design aficionados must-visit list. We have considered many factors - museums, hotels, fairs, arts, legendary brands to ensure geographic diversity. I would like to share something a little personal, away from the usual design and style topics. Recently, my friend was diagnosed with depression - the news affected me greatly. Being depressed can make one feel very helpless. And this greatly affects our frame of mind. Along with therapy and medication, there’s a lot one can do to stage a comeback, including talking things out, trying to modify ones behaviour consciously - physical activity, lifestyle and even the way one thinks. Most importantly, visit a counselor. Your life is far more precious than anything else. After all, we would want you to travel to all these destinations, and share your experiences. Stay healthy and make beautiful memories!

Bedroom

The bedroom is where we unwind and relax at the end of a hard day’s work. So, we want our bedroom to be stylish and comfortable. The article ‘Decor Ideas’ was truly inspiring. I am in the middle of a makeover and was almost out of ideas on how to do up my bedroom. I chanced upon TIHG July issue at the newspaper stall. The cover fascinated me. Flipping through the pages, I chanced upon Decor Ideas. The article changed the whole meaning of transforming your bedroom into one beautiful den. The lighting, the flooring, the wallpaper talk about it and the beautiful visuals reveal everything. Rachana Samarth, Mumbai

Interestingly Important Have you ever wondered why would an entryway be so relevant? Ponder again! The entryway is as much as important as any other room in the house. Because, it defines the rest of the house. I was simply blown away when I read the feature The First Sight. The visuals were mind blowing, and the quotes by renowned architects tells us a lot about how an entryway truly defines and reveals the personality of our abode. The other interesting feature that attracted me was Art Speak. Continuously since last two issues, I am reading this section. It is slowly turning me into an avid art lover. Samadhan Prabhu, Orissa

Home Coming

A Different Take TIHG July issue’s Architect Speak was a class act. Drifting away from tradition, the article made an interesting read. What stood out was the way the layout was done. Departing from the usual format the Editor did a little experimentation. It was a hit. Also, the anecdotes from the architect’s stable about small and interesting things about their life made an interesting read. There is a suggestion that I would like to propose as a reader – the architect’s who are featured in the magazine are already established names; is there a possibility of doing Q&A with young and upcoming talents who are trying to get a sure foothold in the world of architecture. Anubha Jain, Jaipur

‘Home is where the heart resides,’ the saying is true. The Ideal Living section is unmistakably a favourite of mine. Beautiful homes from India and chic homes from European countries are a great source of information and are the best guide to home decor. On a personal level, for me, such homes are a blessings in disguise. As I am a student pursuing a course in interior designing, the stylised homes appearing in TIHG are a pure source of information, a practical source of edutainment and above all , it acts as a guide for a perfect professional future. Graphic designers use variety of elements to achieve artistic design elements or decorative effects. Sneak peek into the works of four different such talented bunch ImpressIons: Benoy seBastIan

What prompted you to become an interior illustrator/graphic designer? I love telling stories. When I was at art school it became a habit for me to record things that interested me in my sketchbook. Drawing became my medium to express myself and it evolved into creating prints and patterns inspired by my travels, which ultimately was the concept behind Safomasi. What is your specialisation? Playful, figurative, illustrated prints that have a strong narrative and a colourful, yet refined palette. Who are your icons and inspirations? I really love the work of Josef Frank, in particular his use of scale and colour. His patterns are bold and joyful, they make me happy to look at! The best thing that you have designed 60

| August 2018 The Ideal Home and Garden

and is proud about? I design pieces that have a personal story to me, but hope that others also feel a connection to them. My favourite products are those that spark a memory or emotion in other people. The Regatta Quilt with a sailing boat print is one such piece. I once had a really lovely email from a customer who had seen it in the window of a shop in New York and dropped everything - she had to buy it. She wrote how it touched her soul as it reminded her of a quilt her mother had made for her as a small child. I’m proud to make something that has that effect on someone. What advice would you give to young self-starters? Trends will come and go – so, focus on creating work that has substance beyond style. Develop a strong point of view and your own unique style.

Designer Speak

sHWeta maLHotra (Shwetamalhotra.in)

What prompted you to become an interior illustrator/ graphic designer? I was always inclined to art and design as a kid. So, when it came to picking my career after college, I decided to study Commercial Art at Sophia Polytechnic in Bombay. After which, I worked as an Art Director in a few agencies; and then finally switched to graphic design. What is your specialisation? I am an independent graphic artist, and have a keen interest in design for lifestyle, music and fashion. I mostly work on branding and identity, communication design and graphic art as personal works and collaborations with other brands. My overall design aesthetic is minimal, bold and graphic, a response to the maximalist visual language prevalent in India. Who are your icons and inspirations? Ikko Tannaka, Nathalie du Pasquier, Craig and Karl Carmen Herrera, Ellsworth Kelly and Yayoi Kusama. The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? I am proud of a lot of work actually, but, the most recent and relevant would be the brand identity, which I designed for Nicobar. What advice would you give to young self-starters? I’d say before starting out on your own to get as much work experience as possible; as I see a lot of young designers starting up their own thing right after college. I worked for eight years and then started working independently, and I personally think its important to get some work experience. Also, I think being unique, which comes from owning who are and where you come from and expressing yourself is important as well. That’s what sets you apart. The Ideal Home and Garden August 2018 |

Designer Speak

What prompted you to become an interior illustrator/graphic designer? Our design journey started very early on from our days together in school where we were constantly encouraged to explore every subject through visual arts as a medium. This exposure to various forms of design both global and Indian was further cultivated through our masters allowing us to turn our passion into a full fledged business when we returned. For us, graphic design is the perfect amalgamation between complex problem solving (science and technology) and open-ended creativity (arts), which we have since grown to relish and extend to various mediums like interiors.

What is your specialisation? While we are the proverbial dogs with many bones, our USP lies in ideating and visualising ‘branding,’ and everything to do with it. Be it a logo of a product or a service, designing it’s physical packaging or the space in which it is presented, and ensuring its presence on a digital platform is what we believe to be our greatest strength and largest area of interest. It is our job to bring a brand to life by visually translating it across the various media spectrum. Who are your icons and inspirations? We appreciate the unconventional styles

of artists like Van Gogh, Picasso and Alphonse Mucha. Apart from these fine artists, we are constantly inspired by the work of Saul Bass and his early motion art, filmmaker Wes Anderson and his stunning cinematography, and New York based masters of typography - Jessica Hische and Louise Fili. The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? Given the variety of our work, both local and global ranging from startups to organisations like the Phoenix Group, Viacom and The United Nations, each one of our projects has a story and is special and unique in its own way. Asking us to choose our best piece of work is like asking us to choose our favourite child. One that recently comes to memory is an end to end branding solution for a homegrown brand called ‘Poshtik’ that makes high quality products for expecting mothers. Another project dear to our hearts is the 360 Branding that we did for Sweetish House Mafia. What advice would you give to young self-starters? Hard work with a dash of luck can take you a long way! You should be ready to accept setbacks and criticisms in your stride and persevere. Stay inspired. Always keep your eyes open - you can find inspiration anywhere. Also, know your softwares. It is such a boon when you know the immense possibilities of your design software, as this helps enhance your thoughts into beautifully executed artworks.

LoKesH KareKar (locopopo StuDio)

What prompted you to become an interior illustrator/ graphic designer? Being from a goldsmith family, craft was in my blood. My grandfather used to create handmade gold and silver jewellery. My father was an artist and an art teacher, I grew up seeing his drawings and that inspired me to persue art as a hobby and then as a profession. What is your specialisation? I specialise in graphic design and illustration. Who are your icons and inspirations? Picasso, Van Gogh and all Indian contemporary and folk artists. The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? For me each new project is best and a new challenge. But, specifically we have a small illustrative product line called Locopopo Shop, where we created a series of ‘freedom fighter badges’ inspired from the classic portraits of freedom fighters of India. The response for the project and the product was amazing, and we are really proud of creating something, which has a real value and reminds us about Indian freedom fighter movement. What advice would you give to young self-starters? Work hard, be passionate about what you do and be original. 64

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a project based on a major sign of Arab architecture: the dome. Double dome 180 meters in diameter, flat, perfect radiant geometry, perforated in a weave more random material, creating

a shadow punctuated by bursts of sun. It is a calm and complex place. A contrast among a series of museums that cultivate their differences and their authenticity. Another opulent building by Jaen Novel is the Doha tower which is cylindrical and is approximately 45 m in diameter. It is covered by a dome and ends with a lighting conductor at 231.50 meters. The structure is made of steel and concrete on a diamond grid curving on the virtual surface of the cylinder. The facade is composed of a double cladding. The exterior (evoking the geometric complexity of oriental moucharabieh and acting

as main sun protection) is composed of four aluminum butterfly elements of different sizes. The tower is accessed by a landscaped garden gently descending to the large lobby under a glass canopy surrounding the building and suggesting that the tower is deeply rooted in the ground. The vegetation and the glass canopy overlap to erase the boundaries between nature and the man-made environment. A huge atrium rises to level 27 at 112 m high.

The CCTV headquarters aims at an alternative to the exhausted typology of the skyscraper. CCTV’s loop poses a truly three-dimensional experience, culminating in a 75 m cantilever. Two towers rise from a common production studio platform, the Plinth. Each tower has a different character: Tower 1 serves as editing area and offices, and the lower Tower 2 to news broadcasting.

The building has a direct connection with Beijing’s subway network. Talking about Shenzen Stock Exchange, the essence of the stock market is speculation: it is based on capital, not material. It is a building with a floating base, representing the stock market more than physically accommodating it. The base speculative euphoria that drives the market is a three-storey cantilevered

platform floating 36 m above the ground, one of the largest office floor plates, with an area of 15,000 m2 per floor and an accessible landscaped roof. The texture of the glass cladding reveals the construction technology behind while simultaneously rendering it mysterious and beautiful. Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, UK by OMA Image: Clement Blanchet

DUO’s two towers contain the main functional elements – one tower accommodates 660 residences and the other corporate offices and a five-star hotel operated by Andaz – the structures dematerialize as they reach the ground, opening out into a porous public landscape. Here, vibrant commercial spaces weave around the footprint of the towers through a sequence of gardens and walkways that pass in and out of the towers hovering above. Furthermore, the Serpentine Pavilion’s centrepiece of the design is a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that floats above the Serpentine’s lawn. Made from translucent material, the structure

is illuminated from within at night. The canopy can be raised into the air or lowered to cover the amphitheatre below according to the weather. The walled enclosure below the canopy functions both as a café and forum for daily televised and recorded public programmes including live talks and film screenings. When it comes to The Interlace, a 170,000 m residential complex in Singapore, conceived as a “vertical village”, features a network of living and social spaces within 31 apartment blocks stacked in a hexagonal arrangement around eight generous courtyards. Unlocking the potentials of Mosaic Artists who visioned the larger-thanlife pieces and made them quintessential for every individual

Born in 1966 in IMPreSSIonS: Jackson, Michigan, ShIvanGI aSThana Jason received his BFA from the University of California in 1990 and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in California in 1994. Today, he and his wife have created an artistic household that sits on 20 acres in upstate New York and raising their family in a very similar environment to his childhood with organic farms and folk music. When it comes to work, he prefers to use a material that could stand up to the elements and that has a long historic tradition. Jason says, “I considered myself a painter who makes sculpture and mosaics, which allow me to explore both disciplines. With every project and or sculpture, I see infinite possibilities with the material and because of this I have grown to really love working with mosaics.” Adding to it, wood, tile, bronze, steel and paint are some of the materials, which are mostly used to create

the masterpiece. On asking about his interest in mosaic, he says, “I like the combination of contemporary art and craft, I always want to push mosaics into the contemporary art side of the conversation.” He wears his ‘C’ principle close to his heart, which stands for Composition, Content and Context. “I want my art to open a conversation for the viewer. I hope when people discover my pieces they should connect to their own experiences that I had while creating the work,” shares Kevin Champeny.

Kevin was born and raised in Beloit, Wisconsin. Champeny began drawing before he could speak and says art was something he always felt compelled to create. He attended Beloit College where he studied art, history and education, graduating with a BA in Studio Art and then moved to New York City. Since graduating, every job he’s had has involved art in some form, be it design, painting, or sculpting. Kevin has sculpted professionally for the last 17 years, creating pieces for companies such as Warner Brothers and Disney, Champeny even created the master model for president Obama’s cereal bowl during his tenure in the White House. When it comes to materials, he says, “I work primarily in hand cast resin. It affords me the greatest flexibility in creating the vast amounts of pieces required for each sculpture. Since I hand cast all of the parts myself, I have control over quantity and colour, as I hand dye every single casting.”

Sandrina Van Geel

Sandrina Van Geel creates mosaic murals for interior decoration (bathrooms, kitchens, floors) or outdoor (swimming pools, gardens, walls, floors). The design is adapted to your support - the preparation, the manufacture in her workshop, community projects as well as on-site installation are part of her expertise. For more than fifteen years she has decorated surfaces in France and abroad, which represents more than a hundred mosaic projects in different formats. Her largest mural was made on a surface of more than 30 meter. In her personal creations, Sandrina likes to mix materials - beautiful stones, marbles carved with a sharp hammer and Venitian glass as well as some treasures collected in different countries. Sometimes, she turns a pebble into a character, manufactures mobile spiders to hang, or mushrooms in cement and mosaic, as she is inspired from the shapes of animals and vegetation. She concludes by saying, “I recently discovered the New York subway mosaics; there are dozens of subway stations decorated with huge magnificent mosaic pieces for millions of passengers to enjoy. It makes art available to everyone. People can touch and feel it, it is perennial, virtually indestructible. The Ideal Home and Garden August 2018 |

Rhianon Beardsall realised her love for mosaics on her visit to Cyprus where she saw the ancient Roman mosaics and her love was born. Today, she endeavours to use the ancient skill in a new way to create her vision of modern art. She describes, “With any art I produce, my aim is to elicit an emotional response from within the viewer. When inspiration comes to me I am compelled to give it a form. I create from a place of joy and wonder at the world around me. I regularly spend time with other artists, which helps develop ideas and provides opportunities to exhibit my work.” On her particularity of materials, she further adds, “I love to work with ceramic tile made by Cinca in Portugal, art glass beads, millefiori, pebbles, shells, metal cogs, glass nuggets, and mirror are also included to bring life in art. I hand cut the tiles into curvaceous, organic shapes that are part of my unique style.” She explains that with mosaic, one is bound by the limits of the material you are working with and she enjoys this challenge as it invites her to explore different ways of interpreting the vision.

A 42 years old, Sepideh Sadri is a graduate in the field of microbiology, lives in Iran and inherits her beautiful artwork from rich culture. She believes that one can create beautiful works by picking together broken hard objects and creating beautiful shapes for mosaic is a very thrilling motive. She has decorated innumerable walls and did a lot of work for the sports and recreational complex in Iran. She says, “I am inspired by nature and my surroundings to create beautiful colors in my work. In the art pieces she choses to include glass, mirror, and metal alongside the mosaic. Also, for a greater good she teach the art of mosaics on Instagram to many people who cannot learn this intriguing art form because of the great distance from the city.

e have to admit this that no matter how much we adore bolds and brights, we always have a soft spot for lighter, feminine shades. There’s something so soothing and so magical about mint, pink and light yellow that we just can’t resist. Soft, varied and versatile, they can be fairly neutral when necessary. All you need to do is make statement by placing pastel pieces throughout your living space. How did you decide to team up? Sanjay: I oversee everything from the design conceptualisation to the final outcome in the projects while Ayesha conceptualises and details the projects she designs. Ayesha: We have very different roles - I work on my own projects and only approach him when I need help. If I’ve been struggling with a layout, I’ll take it to him and within five minutes he’ll put a sheet of tracing on top and scribble over the perfect solution. What do you admire most about each other? Sanjay: The similarity is that both want to create something new to experience and the difference lies in the approach towards that goal. Ayesha: I think our design aesthetics are very different - his being more bold and unconventional. We aren’t very similar, and that’s what actually helps when I need feedback or vice versa. However, growing up with so many visits to different sites has

Architect Speak

subconsciously made me do certain things in the same way as my parents without even realising it. How is your personal and professional relationship? Sanjay: Professionally and personally it is a great relationship; with Ayesha always being enthusiastic in every endeavour. Ayesha: Both are amazing, as I get to learn a lot from my father. Your approach to a project? Sanjay: Both design approaches are very tangential and one controls the other, while one makes the other explore more. Ayesha: I think after so many years of seeing my dad design the one thing I can say for sure is that each one is different to anything he’s done before. His ability to make each project unique while remaining contextual and true to his own design instincts continues to

influence me, and I always strive to create something unique with every space, no matter how big or small the scale may be. Is there a motto that you live or work by? Sanjay: Every project should be a new discovery of interspatial relationships in addition to being contextually responsive. I think the key feature in architectural practice is the balance that one needs to strike between our design aesthetic and the needs of the client, because a project is only successful, if we manage to embody the client’s persona while adhering to our design beliefs. What core competence does each bring in? Sanjay: Ayesha is a fast learner. She always gives her best. Ayesha: His years of experience always comes handy. He is my philosopher, friend and guide.

How did you decide to team up? Bakir: Baldiwala Associates was started four decades back, and it’s been around eight years that we joined hands to indulge in some great works. It does take time to balance things and the generation gap indeed comes to terms. Ali: After my graduation from Rachana Sansad (Mumbai) followed by an internship at Neterwala & Aibara, it was with dad that I understood the practical approach to design and its outcome.

alI BaldIWala & BakIr BaldIWala (BaldIwala aSSocIaTeS) 90

| August 2018 The Ideal Home and Garden

What do you admire most about each other? Bakir: His passion to work, to be innovative, to source new materials - this reflects in the quality of his designs. Ali: Dad’s dedication and honesty to professional ethics.

How is your personal and professional relationship? Bakir: It’s only professional at work. Ali: We try and keep one away from the other. Professionally we offer space to each making sure finally we achieve what is best, and of course work in tandem towards it. Your approach to a project? Bakir: I believe that each site commands its own style. I personally don’t agree with a particular design philosophy, and one can see our works - they are varied. I believe that a house has to be a home, and a commercial place has to be very functional and conducive to growth. Ali: I like to use an eclectic palate and get exciting results. There’s a lot of drama with materials that I like

Architect Speak

to create without it looking too chaotic or cluttered. Is there a motto that you live or work by? Bakir: It is most important to understand the client’s take on the space and design - whether a residential space has to look like a museum or a home, or whether an office has to be more functional or glamorous. Ali: I agree. One thing that I learned from my experience is that the brief plays the most important role in achieving the desired results. What core competence does each bring in? Bakir: Ali is abreast of the trends and happenings in the industry. He is stylish, speedy, and loves to think out of the box. Ali: His farsightedness and capability of visualising the final product. Architect Speak

How did you decide to team up? Alfaz: I decided to team up with my daughter because of her MArch in architecture and a BFA in interior architecture, so for me it was a natural fit. Aahana: My father has a well reputed, established practice; I can’t think of a better place to start my career as an architect. What do you admire most about each other? Alfaz: I admire her design sensibility, her seriousness and her sense of responsibility. Aahana: I admire how hard he works - he started ABM at age 21; I don’t know how he did it. How is your personal and professional relationship? Alfaz: Our relationship overlaps as Aahana has just joined the firm. As time passes I am hoping our personal and professional relationship can be separate. Aahana: We try to keep them separate, but find

it almost impossible not to talk about work at the dinner table. Your approach to a project? Alfaz: I attempt to design contextually, and make the design timeless. I believe my designs need to be constructible, functional and cost-effective. Aahana: With my background in interior architecture, I always start designing inside out and then outside in. Is there a motto that you live or work by? Alfaz: Hard work and honesty, and to give my best to each project. Aahana: Architecture is a battlefield, and I think it is important to create a work-life balance and that is what I strive for. What core competence does each bring in? Alfaz: A freshness and an exposure to the latest trends and technologies. Aahana: His 47 years of experience. The Ideal Home and Garden August 2018 |

How did you decide to team up? Bharat: I have four decades of experience in the field of architecture and planning. I realised that my rich experience could be further encashed in the form of business. Aditya was doing his masters around the time I was thinking of starting, and realised, if he joins the company we can have a great combination of two generations. One sets the vision and the other supports and implements. Aditya: Well it was an easy decision for me, either work in USA for someone or work for myself back in India. The thought of opening a company in USA did cross my mind, but I always had plans to come back and hence joining with my father became a natural instinct.

What do you admire most about each other? Bharat: The way Aditya thinks

and the constant hunger to find a disruptive solution, new concepts and adapting ever evolving standards around the world. It could have been easy for him to continue what has being implemented from the past, but since the goal is different, he keeps on challenging and looks forward for innovative solutions. Aditya: Experience, experience and experience there is no substitute, there are no books, which can teach this and hence I look forward for his thoughts on subjects which I have doubts on. I have become a risk taker, because I am sure he has a backup plan for pretty much every problem. How is your personal and professional relationship? Bharat: We respect each others professional and personal space. He is a director in the company

Architect Speak

and acts independently to take his own decisions pertaining to the projects. We also respect each others views as business partners when it comes to the vision or growth of the company. Aditya: He is a mentor 24x7, so, his role does not change. In personal life he advises at a personal level. He changes his mode to discuss issues as a partner and respects my thoughts and views equally. Your approach to a project? Bharat: Value for money. How do we maximise the returns for the client, what is the most economical solution to achieve the same, and what are the new rules and regulations to achieve the same. Pretty straight forward. Aditya: I have a separate way here. I guess because of the difference in the number of years of experience. I tend to listen more to my client and discuss more options or solutions as compared to my father. He pretty much makes all

permutations and combinations in his mind and shoots not more than one option to the client, which pretty much is similar to what I finally arrive as one of the best possible solution as an architect, only difference being, me and my client take more time to reach to these answers as compared to my father. Experience matters and hence his experience and solutions acts as a guiding stick for me. Is there a motto that you live or work by? Bharat: Give the best possible solution to the client in design, time and cost. Aditya: The motto for me was to make the family proud of what we do as an

organisation through the different works we do for our clients, while maintaining balance between work and family. What core competence does each bring? Bharat: I bring a lot of network, experience of different situations, a lot of business acumen, whereas the operational activities are left to Aditya. I create the vision along with Aditya and use my network; and he puts his hard work, which has been a good combination for our business and clients. Aditya: I believe in innovation, whether it is design, economics and more.

he rains this season brought in a very special visitor to Art Centrix Space. With its vibrant oscillated trail of feathers, a crown of the same on its beautiful elegant form, the peacock, according to legend, is a harbinger of monsoon.

While we are quite used to seeing this majestic bird walk around in our sculpture garden, the one that’s visited this time is sculpted to perfection by the very talented artist Mayadhar Sahu and is as lifelike in wood and bronze. Rains have a special place

Art Speak

in Indian art. In classical Indian music, Raga Malhar is believed to be so powerful that when sung it can bring rain. Dr Geeta Banerjee, in her book ‘Raga Malhar Darshan’, elucidates on Raganga Malhar and its derivatives. She organises the development of the Malhars chronologically through three major time periods -prachina, madhyakalina and arvachina. Ragas Shuddha Malhar, Megh Malhar and Gaud Malhar belong to the prachina or ancient period before the 15th century. We seldom realise that what we find beautiful in the arts may well be intrinsic to our upbringing - our cultural roots woven into the fabric of our DNA. When Shakespeare wrote the sonnet, ‘Shall I Compare Thee to a Summers’ Day, it was an English yearning for warm, summer days. It is the monsoons after the long, harsh Indian summers that bring forth romanticism in the arts in our culture. Lord Krishna has a strong association with saavan. The pichvais devoted to him traditionally form the backdrop for his image in the Nathdwara tradition. The kamal pichvai is dedicated to Krishna in the monsoon season. With Janmashtami not far away, Bal Krishna or laddu gopal, made of panchdhatu and painted enamel are much revered. These idols are rendered in accordance with the shastras and can be enshrined as is in the temple within your house. Like the peacock feathers that

find pride of place in the deity’s crown, he plays the main protagonist in several genres of Indian miniature painting. The lore of Krishna has been very popular in Awadh. Hazrat Maulana Mohani, popularly known as the maulana who loved Krishna, wrote several love poems on him mostly

in Awadhi, though in the Urdu script. The miniature works of Mainaz Bano express Krishna as an idea through narratives with carefully delineated forms that evoke the Awadhi culture of Lucknow. A stunning work by Meenakshi Sengupta depicts Krishna Paksha in two pictorial layers. The larger space is entirely covered

with decorative foliage punctuated by night birds. Centred in this space is a smaller window, showing a solitary pregnant female strolling through a nocturnal landscape. To the artist, the title signifies both a fortnight dedicated to the dark lord (Krishna) and the new moon phase of the lunar cycle indicated by the crescent moon above. The image of the woman in the middle could be some hapless anonymous woman who bears the fruit of a sexual escapade with a philandering lover and wonders about her uncertain future; else, it could be the counter myth of the relationship of Radha-Krishna, which is more spiritual than sexual. The symbolism of monsoons with fertility emerges beautifully in this miniature work. The power of the tree goddess was frequently invoked for fertility, shown in this sculpture with the tree bursting into bloom when the goddess heel touches its trunk. The motif of the tree goddess or Salabhanjika is found in Buddhist, Jain and Hindu art, which adapted the pre-existing beliefs in female nature spirits or yakshis. Although different in context, in light of the recent outcry over tree cutting in Central Delhi, art, whether classical, ancient or contemporary, continues to address and express issues and ideas of its period. These and more works can be viewed at the ongoing monsoon exhibition at the gallery. The Ideal Home and Garden August 2018 |

his large Edwardian property has space used to the maximum effect. Designer Maurizio Pellizzoni extended the original building to add a new double-height formal room, orangery, three extra bathrooms and walk-in wardrobe. The owners were keen to keep intact existing pieces of furniture from various family trips abroad into the new design. These pieces were distributed amongst the rooms in the house, and used as the inspiration behind each room’s individual colour scheme and feel, creating an eclectic, yet personal overall design aesthetic. Maurizio completely redesigned the kitchen with help from a local kitchen maker, sourcing the perfect finishing touches like the custom-made Carrara worktop for the kitchen. Particular attention was paid to final details throughout the home in order to achieve a high level of elegance and sophistication in the design - such as the beautifully crafted door handles by Charles Edwards. Ralph Lauren, de Le Cuona and Andrew Martin furniture and fabrics are also used throughout to create an air of luxurious refinement, while complementing the owners existing pieces. The home has an upscale American look alongside the owner’s many personal antiques and objects d’art. All the artworks are reframed for consistency and the furniture, including the kitchen, the balustrade in the hallway and all the sofas, are custom-made by Maurizio Pellizzoni. Each bedroom is themed around an existing antique piece. The home has the coastal elegance feel of New England styling with a quintessentially British feel creating the perfect backdrop for a relaxed living and entertaining space for the owners. The design serves to conjure up memories of summer days spent by the beach, while retaining an element of timeless English tradition and charm.

Green House

Indoor gardening is not only limited to beautification of the place, it also helps in the upgradation of air quality, says Shabnam Singh, Founder, Project Co.

Green House

S

urrounded by nature’s gift is a bliss but living amidst it can be a fulfilling experience. Why to confine gardening at our front door when we can keep ferns in the bathroom, pots of rosemary in kitchen, dwarf citrus in the bedroom and seedlings in the basement? Indoor plants will leave the aura much more soothing and tranquil than ever before. Long life of indoor plants is a cakewalk, if few steps are tracked. n Sunny windows are like the best friend to indoor seedlings. n Watering them with room temperature water is life saver to them. n Frequently pruning your plants is another way. Guaranteed solution to long life of indoor plant is keeping the place humid. n And, don’t forget to feed your plants! Fertiliser and compost is the answer. Talks about extensive expenses of indoor plants are a myth. Plants can be rooted in a simple trouble-free manner. Few of the DIYs can be: Hydroponic gardening i.e., growing plants in water. Plants like Chinese evergreen, wax plant, English ivy, etc can be grown in water by the use of starter cubes. Soaking starter cubes in water for an hour, followed by insertion of seeds and their placement is the easiest way.

n

Container gardening, this can be done in any pretty pot at your place with the right amount of soil, compost and seedlings. Pot can be laid with a few pebbles (It won’t just only enhance the appearance, but will also keep the plant humid.)

n

Self-Watering Plants, this classy name gives itself away. With the use of old glass bottles we can keep our worries of ‘who will water our plants when we are away?’ aside. The bottle is cut into 1/4 of upper half and 3/4 of lower half. With the help of moist soil, seedlings are planted in the upper half and then, the upper half is adjusted in the lower one filled with water. Voila! It is ready.

n

Last, but not the least, we can create our own Herb Garden within our little space. Herbs like basil, parsley, mint or other things like tomato, carrot, and orange can also be grown. Herbs take a little space, and we can use ladder, hanging pots, mansion jars to name a few to create the little place for self-grown organic herbs.

n

Air purifying plants enhances the charm of indoor gardening. Bamboo palm, English ivy, dwarf date, peace lily, dumb cane and many more are the carbon sucking plants we can use at our place instead of overly charged electronic air purifiers. This is possibly the biggest attraction and a necessity today. With the right amalgamation of moisture, soil mixture, temperature and care everyone can nurture their personal indoor gardening without clutching their wallets. Indoor gardening is alluring with all the hidden and not-so-hidden benefits it possesses for oneself. Let’s breathe in freshness and breathe out the toxic air.
