A classic gray stone look with signature white veining, this island base in Pietra Grafite adds subdued, sophisticated style to the space while providing a balance for the jet-black shades and sleek furniture found in the living area.
The Brite White countertops in Formica® Solid Surfacing are a fresh and contemporary addition to the kitchen area and are a clean contrast against the gray stone and woodgrain designs.
Cabinetry made with White Knotty Maple, a raw, rustic woodgrain design, adds a natural element to the room’s aesthetic and creates an organic separation between the living and kitchen areas.
The elevated, strong black design of the Nero Marquina pattern creates a coffee table that inspires conversation. This refined centerpiece of the room acts as a base for the palette of complementary neutral colors featured throughout the space.
A shelving unit crafted with White Painted Wood shelves and a black metal base encourages styling that allows personality to shine.

Readers can figure out pretty quickly that we love bright colors at HGTV Magazine. Lime green sofas, purple pillows, orange console tables—we go gaga for all these, all the time. So why would we dedicate so many pages in this issue to decorating with black and white? Because no matter which hues you already have going on in a room, you can add black-and-white accessories, art, and accent pieces. They look great with literally anything. The other day I was feeling bored with my bookshelves, so I put a black-and-white striped box at the end of a row of books and, presto! Instant uplift. I could go on and on about decorating with black and white, or I could steer you to our tour of HGTV’s Christina Anstead’s new house in California, on page 92. She’s been a fan of black-and-white style for years, and her place proves how casual-chic the pair can be. Of course, there are still plenty of colorful ideas in this issue, including a roundup of seasonal finds that make fall decorating even more fun. Orange you glad you picked up this magazine?

caned armoire It’s two trends in one: Both caning and armoires are having a moment. The combo is so stylish, you’ll want it even if you have good closet space. The airiness of the caned doors keeps the piece from seeming bulky.
This early 20th-century staple was the designated spot for a rotary phone and a chat (which explains its nickname, “gossip bench”). It’s back, sans the landline but still with that cool retro look. Top the table with a pretty lamp or a tray for keys.

I
f you’re buying a 95-year-old house, there are certain issues you’d expect: creaky floors, drafty windows, faulty light switches—but probably not a mirrored wall over the fireplace. That was one of several things that perplexed Nydia Parries and her husband, Jordan Heller, about their 1924 Colonial in Cleveland Heights, OH. Also not upping the charm: hazy gray paint on the walls and a looooong layout that made it tough to arrange the furniture from their previous place— plus, where to put the TV? Time for an HGTV Magazine takeover! Vivid blues and greens and punchy patterns made it modern. So did dividing the space into two sections: one for hanging out in front of the fireplace and one for watching TV. “Our 3-yearold asks to eat breakfast in here every morning,” says Nydia. “We all love it so much, we can’t get enough.”
stone dragged down the cute fireplace (that arch!); bright white paint (Polar Bear by Behr) perked it right up. And how’s this for a magic trick: Cladding just the mantel in woodlook Formica makes it appear brand-new.
wall color Crashing Waves by Behr
shelves Supersmart: a short bookcase behind the sofa to stow bins, display mementos, and corral books. Superchic: the X detail on the sides and back.
fun decorating art Unlike the old mirror, a trio of abstract prints— these are from Etsy shop Oh Finale—that play off the new ocean wall color make a style statement.
seating
Modular seating from World Market—there are three pieces here—arranged in an L shape fits just right in the corner. A round ottoman from Blu Dot does triple duty as a footrest, a coffee table, and a toddler play spot.
rugs Rugs in coordinating blues are way hipper than the former fussy one. The mottled chevron rug is by West Elm, and the round raised-texture one is by Surya.
HGTV Magazine 63
before sofa and chair “The sectional we had was too big for the room, so we used only part of it,” says Nydia. “It looked pathetic!” She and Jordan were thrilled to trade it in for a 78-inch-wide apple green sofa from Apt2B. “Every time I walk in, it feels so good to see this happy couch,” says Nydia. The double-decker coffee table is from Target, and the dotted chair is from One Kings Lane.
Shades with watercolor-y gray stripes from The Shade Store work well with the room’s other patterns.

tv stand The old bookcase had survived several moves, but its open shelves were terminally cluttered. A low TV stand and a wall-mounted cabinet, both from IKEA, hold almost as much—but are way sleeker. “And the doors hide everything,” says Nydia.

is it?
Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions. NOT BAD AT ALL!
NOT SO BAD!
KINDA BAD!
YARD: GETTY IMAGES
how bad is it to not do fall yard cleanup? Your lawn’s future is brighter if you pick up those leaves, especially if you have northern grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. “Because these varieties don’t go dormant until temperatures drop to about 35˚F, they use that time to absorb sunlight and store energy for spring growth,” says John N. Rogers III, Ph.D., a professor at Michigan State University’s Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences. “If there’s a layer of leaves blocking patches of grass, those areas may grow more slowly in spring than the rest of your yard, making it look uneven and unhealthy.” So rake, blow, or mow fallen leaves. Letting shredded leaves sit on your lawn after mowing is A-OK—the debris will turn into fertilizer and block weed growth. One part of cleanup you can skip: cutting back dead flowers on perennials, since they’ll return regardless.

good question
how bad is it to video chat in public? Yes, you can FaceTime anywhere you’d make a phone call—just be aware of your surroundings. “Sometimes standing in line at the grocery store is the only moment we have to catch up with someone, or we want a friend to tell us an outfit looks great while we’re in the dressing room. As long as you employ common courtesy, that’s fine,” says Jules Hirst, a Los Angeles–based etiquette expert and a coauthor of The Power of Civility. What good FaceTime manners mean: Pop in earbuds and keep the camera focused on you in public (bystanders don’t want a starring role in your convo). Try to avoid getting so wrapped up in your chat that you inconvenience others. “I’ve seen cashiers ask ‘Cash or credit?’ three times when people get lost in conversation,” Hirst says. “That’s where you’re verging on rudeness.”
NOT SO BAD!
how bad is it to have a drink when you’re on antibiotics? Steer clear or happy hour could turn out to be just the opposite. “When you’re sick you’re already not at your best, and with some antibiotics, alcohol can counteract the healing effects,” says Zachary Merten, M.D., a physician at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, WI. Drinking may speed up the metabolism of medications, which means your body processes them more rapidly—and you don’t get the full healing dose. Boozy beverages could be particularly dangerous in combo with metronidazole and tinidazole, used to treat bacterial infections, and linezolid, for staph and strep (think heart palpitations or scary-high blood pressure). Even one drink can increase nausea, dizziness, and other common side effects of antibiotics. Mind the alcohol warnings that come with meds, then feel free to toast to your good health once you’ve finished your Rx.

hen Brittany Hayes first saw this 1905 Craftsman in Monroe, GA, it had no walls, no fixtures, no lighting, and almost no floors—the previous owner had gutted it. Even so, she was smitten. “I could see character here and there, like some of the original pine floors and the super-tall ceilings,” she says. A blogger and designer, Brittany had been waiting for the opportunity to take on a big project, and to create a home that she and her girls, Addison, 11, and Winter, 7, could call their own. And here it was, charm in the rough. First came the heavy lifting: Drywall was installed, plumbing was added, the old floors were refinished. Then Brittany cracked open her Pinterest board to inspire a whimsical-meetselegant blend of dramatic paints, fancy wallpapers, and look-at-me furniture— plus touches that all have a little something special. “We call this house our historic wonderland,” says Brittany. “Every room is a place where you can kick your shoes off and get lost.”

Long flowy white curtains: always dreamy.
living room The heart of this space: the swoon-worthy brick fireplace. “I treasured the few things that were still there after the gut job,” Brittany says. She put in rustic beams stained dark walnut and a roll arm sofa from RH to play up the vintage look. But it wouldn’t be a room in her house if it weren’t a little playful; enter a bubble gum pink velvet ottoman and a pair of bird-adorned upholstered armchairs, all from Anthropologie.
kitchen “I wanted a kitchen that felt sophisticated, to fit with the original look of the house,” says Brittany. A majestic powder-coatedwood range hood in black and gold by APF, Inc. became the centerpiece, contrasted with customcolor gray blue cabinets and luxe marble countertops. Gold-toned shelves echo the hood. “Even cooking spaghetti feels fancy in this kitchen,” says Brittany.

playroom This room was already magical, with its 12-foottall ceilings and large windows. To make it all the more so for Addison and Winter, Brittany put in a pink velvet sectional from Jonathan Louis, pinkand-red-striped chairs, and a candlestick-inspired chandelier. Uno is even more fun played on one of the gold poufs, which are from HomeGoods. “They like to crank up Taylor Swift when their friends are over and have dance parties in here, says Brittany.
A mix of photos, travel finds, and art makes a gallery wall unique (this one has Addison and Winter originals).
crafts room The girls’ shared creative space is fairy-tale-like thanks to the ethereal mural wallpaper from Anthropologie. “They paint and color in here, but someday they’ll use it for homework,” says Brittany. “Either way, I wanted it to feel inspiring.” Punched brass pendants (also from Anthropologie) hang like flowers over pretty matching desks and chairs from Nadeau. A cart from World Market holds crayons, paper, and other imagination enablers.

hristina Anstead is a whiz at finding great houses. The star of Christina on the Coast and Flip or Flop knew exactly what she and her husband, Ant, wanted when they were looking for a place in Newport Beach, CA, last year. “Single level, preferably farmhouse style, and I’ve always loved a black-and-white home,” she says. And that’s exactly what they got. It didn’t need a ton of work—just enough for them to put their stamp on the place, blending their different styles. “I’m bohemian, he’s more industrial,” says Christina. The result: a winning marriage of black and white and natural wood tones. Take a look!

living room “I had this sectional made for my last house, so I was excited when it fit well in this space,” says Christina. She worked with local designer Raili Clasen to drop in unique pieces like the coffee table from HD Buttercup and the lowslung armchairs. All the blond wood balances out the charcoal gray fabric.
Ant built this metal and glass wine cabinet, which can hold about 180 bottles.

Q
Why does my dog bark at the vacuum?
GETTY IMAGES
A. He probably sees it as a threat, and is barking to scare it off, says Margaret E. Gruen, D.V.M., assistant professor of behavioral medicine at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Help your pup get more comfortable through counterconditioning—as in, give him a treat whenever he sees the machine so he learns to associate it with something good. Gradually get your dog closer to the vacuum by rewarding him with goodies when he approaches, working in short sessions and paying attention to his response. “If you’re right near the vacuum and your dog’s too scared to take the treat, go back to the distance he was able to handle so you can end on a positive note, then try again another time,” says Dr. Gruen.

Q
Why does my parrot
between my couch cushions?
A. It could be a nesting urge. Although cozying up to a couch is usually harmless, some birds bite the fabric in an effort to acquire nesting material, says Patrick T. Redig, D.V.M., professor emeritus of avian medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota. To limit the instinct, avoid hand-feeding your parrot, as well as too much petting—both mimic interactions between coupled birds and can further stir up hormones.
Q
Why does my cat knead her paws on my lap?
A. This is often a sign of affection and contentment. “Kittens knead to stimulate milk ejection from their mother, and the action can call to mind the positive experience of being fed,” says Dr. Carlo Siracusa, D.V.M., director of the small animal behavior service at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. As adults, cats typically revert to these mini massages when they feel comfortable with someone. Keep it a happy experience for both of you by regularly trimming your cat’s claws—but in a pinch (er, scratch), slip a blanket beneath for extra padding.
“My Wesley loves sunbathing so much that I have to put SPF on his belly so he doesn’t get burned. Any patch of sun is fair game.”
Rabbits rub their chins on their food bowls, their beds, and furniture to mark their territory with their scent.
Why does my dog tilt his head when I talk to him?
A. It could be to get a better listen by preventing floppy ears from blocking ear canals, says Dr. Gruen. Or it may be for a better look—if a pup has a larger muzzle, it can obscure his vision. Just as likely: “Your dog has picked up on the fact that you think this trick is pretty darn cute,” says Dr. Gruen. “For some dogs, it becomes a learned behavior.” When it’s rewarded by people with engagement and feedback (“awwww!”), a pup might keep right on doing it to get that response. (Awwww!)

A. It’s a thing—check out #catsonlaptops on Instagram. The truth is, this habit is all about you. “Cats are more social than people give them credit for, and they want to be right where you are for attention or company,” says Dr. Gruen. Bonus for a cat looking for a comfy place to catch a nap: A laptop keyboard can be nice and toasty. If you’re desperate to get your kitty off yours while you work, transfer her to something near you that’s equally warm and even more cozy, such as a heated cat pad (Chewy has one for $30).

Guinea pigs rarely close their eyes— even while sleeping—because they’re prey animals who instinctively remain alert for predators.
Jasmine Roth, Rock the Block, and English bulldog Nala
Q
Why do dogs walk in circles before lying down?
A. It’s a primitive instinct that makes them feel comforted and secure. “In the wild, dogs would walk around on the grass, snow, or underbrush to pat it down and create a smooth area to lie on,” says Judy Morgan, D.V.M., an integrative veterinarian based in Clayton, NJ. “Walking in circles would have also scared off any smaller animals, like snakes, that might have been in the area.” At home, pups don’t have to worry about predators, but circling still helps give them a sweet spot to crash. You may even see them scratch at a rug or bedding before circling, to fluff it up and make it even softer for sleeping.

“My husband and I made a little dog cave under the stairs for Nala and added a couple of mirrors just to make it cute. But Nala actually uses them! We keep catching her sitting there, checking herself out.”
Q
Why is my fish hiding in the tank? A. Test the water. “Changes in pH, ammonia, nitrates, and even temperature can cause enough stress to make fish hide,” says Ashley Emanuele, D.V.M., a certified fish veterinarian in Raleigh, NC. If the water is OK, he might be sick (especially if he is leaving food uneaten and has discoloration on his body), and is hiding to avoid being preyed upon by his tankmates. Contact your vet or check fishvets.org to find one who treats fish.

BACKSPLASHES we could stare at all day
A striking design has the power to revive a kitchen— and can make even scrubbing pots kind of pleasant.
KYLE BORN
FISH SCALE TILE Rows of scallop tiles in watery hues create a fresh look in designer Michelle Gage’s Villanova, PA, kitchen. “It was inspired by a trip to Hawaii, where my husband and I fell in love with the bright blue water,” says Michelle. Arranging the tiles (from Mercury Mosaics) with darker shades mainly on the bottom and lighter ones on top is reminiscent of receding ocean waves. HGTV Magazine 119

Zigzags of glossy pink tiles are made even more spectacular by yellow grout in this London kitchen. (Fireclay Tile makes a similar version; the grout is by Mapei.) “The contrast accentuates the herringbone pattern and picks up the room’s yellow touches,” says architect Catrina Stewart. Tinted grout comes in a range of colors. “White tile and blue grout is also a great combo,” she says.
PAINTED GLASS Glass as a backsplash is pretty genius—it’s sleek, chic, and (bonus!) there’s no grout to deal with. This sheet of tempered glass was painted a custom teal on the back for designer Hannah Hacker’s Beaverton, OR, home. “It gives the space a clean, current feel and dazzles when light bounces off it,” says Hannah. You can get a big piece of glass from a local glass fabricator.
