ABOUT THE

FESTIVAL

The 54th annual Elmhurst University Jazz Festival presents a second installment this year with its High School Invitational, made possible by the generous support of the Sylvia and William W. Gretsch Memorial Foundation. The 54th edition of the Festival will be remembered not only for another great year of music, but also as a year of some changes. First, you may notice that the event is now known as the Elmhurst University Jazz Festival as a result of our institution’s name change. Another significant difference is the presentation format: the 2021 Festival is a virtual event, held entirely online. The main Festival, held in February, was a huge success, drawing viewers from around the world: across the USA, Europe, and as far as Japan and Australia. We hope you will enjoy this second installment of the Festival, with special programming just for the High School Invitational.

Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, the Joe Lovano Quartet, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The ClaytonHamilton Jazz Orchestra, The Jeff Hamilton Trio, Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project and The Dave Douglas Quintet all have graced our stage. Since 1968, there have been countless memorable moments. Many of them have been the performances by the legendary artists who make the journey to our stage each year. But the student musicians who perform on the afternoon and evening sessions have created a great number of those moments of magic. They deliver heartfelt performances and give the audiences all they have and more. Many have gone on to careers in music and have made their mark in the art form. Professionals who performed here as students include Delfayo Marsalis, Rich Perry, Cecil Bridgewater, John Harmon, John Fedchock, Peter Erskine, Tim Hagans and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

The current Elmhurst University Jazz Festival rose from the ashes of the now defunct American College Jazz Festival. The original Festival, established in 1968, was comprised of eight regional sites throughout the United States. Elmhurst College hosted the Midwest event. Each regional festival produced a winning band, combo, and vocalist, who then performed at a national festival on Memorial Day weekend. American Airlines, Budweiser, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts sponsored the annual extravaganza. The national festival expired in 1973, but Elmhurst College continued its festival with a new approach. Instead of a winner-take-all format, the emphasis was shifted from competition to education. Guest artists offer constructive critiques of each performing group, conduct clinics, and demonstrate their skill in concert. The artists also grant awards to outstanding ensembles, individual musicians, and student composers & arrangers.

The Festival is above all else a forum for jazz education. It is a gathering where some of the world’s most acclaimed artists come together with the next generation of musicians to not only perform the music, but also to study it. The Festival is a place where students have access to some of the best musicians in the business and can ask them directly about their artistry.

The Festival has hosted some of the most iconic names in jazz. Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Konitz, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, the Dave Holland Quintet, Nicholas Payton, Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Bill Holman Band, the Phil Woods Quintet, the Count Basie Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson, Patti Austin, Gordon

In 2017 the Festival celebrated its 50th Anniversary, and we are able to look back on a history that clearly marks its status as an institution. While the 54th edition is presented in a virtual format, it promises to keep that tradition alive. It is a special happening: a rare blend of educational enrichment and exciting entertainment. Welcome to our celebration of America's sublime art form.

FEATURE

PERFORMANCE

THE ELMHURST UNIVERSITY JAZZ BAND THE MUSIC OF BOB BROOKMEYER CONDUCTED BY RYAN TRUESDELL Under the direction of Doug Beach, the Elmhurst University Jazz Band has earned worldwide acclaim as an outstanding ensemble. In June of 2014, the Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards named the Elmhurst College Jazz Band the Undergraduate College winner in the large jazz ensemble category. The band has performed in Greece, Romania, England, Scotland, Ireland, Croatia, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Italy, Indonesia, Malta, Spain, Portugal, Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria, Canada and the Bahamas. It has twice toured Europe at the invitation of the U.S. State Department. It has appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Northsea Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Vienne Jazz Festival, Bohemia Jazz and others. In 1997, the band was the only college jazz ensemble invited to perform at the Jak Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. Closer to home, the Elmhurst University Jazz Band has performed at festivals across the United States, and has received outstanding ratings from jazz greats Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Rob McConnell, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker and Bob Brookmeyer among others. In 2001, the band

accompanied Dee Dee Bridgewater on the main stage at the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park. The band regularly appears with the most respected musicians in professional jazz. Recent guest artists have included Bobby Shew, the Yellowjackets, Wayne Bergeron, Patti Austin, John Pizzarelli, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Denis DiBlasio, Gary Smulyan, Tom Scott, Bill Watrous, and Patrick Williams. In October of 2017, the band was invited by the legendary Doc Severinsen to accompany him on a concert tour of Ohio. The Elmhurst University Jazz Band has had a strong connection to the music of Bob Brookmeyer for a number of years. His music is a frequent programming choice on the band’s concerts. In 2016 the band released an album of Brookmeyer’s music with Ryan Truesdell conducting. Ryan was one of Brookmeyer’s closest students and is deeply connected to his arrangements and compositions. For this concert, Ryan has selected pieces from various stages of Bob’s career.

ARTISTS/ADJUDICATORS

JAY ANDERSON

RYAN KEBERLE

Bassist/composer Jay Anderson is among the most versatile and respected jazz artists performing today. He has performed/recorded with a wide range of jazz artists including Woody Herman, Carmen McRae, Michael Brecker, Paul Bley, Bob Mintzer, John Abercrombie, Dave Liebman, Maria Schneider, John Scofield, Lee Konitz, Vic Juris, Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan, Mike Stern, Anat Cohen, Toots Thielemans, and Kenny Wheeler, and non-jazz artists like Oswaldo Golijov, Dawn Upshaw, Michael Franks, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Tom Waits, Chaka Khan, Michel Legrand, Allen Ginsberg, and Celine Dion. He has been featured on over 400 recordings, seven of which have received the Grammy Award. He has conducted clinics around the world and is a Professor of Jazz Bass Studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Jay currently co-leads the critically acclaimed group BANN featuring Seamus Blake, Oz Noy and Adam Nussbaum.

Hailed in the Downbeat International Critics Poll as #1 Rising Star trombonist, a player “of vision and composure” according to The New York Times, Ryan Keberle has developed a one-of-a-kind voice both on his instrument and as a composer, earning distinction among jazz’s most adventurous new voices. Keberle’s music integrates his wideranging experiences into a highly personal vernacular — immersed in jazz tradition, drawing on world music, rock and other influences, seeking fresh and original pathways. His flagship ensemble, Catharsis, has released five albums, three on Dave Douglas’s Greenleaf Music record label, to worldwide critical acclaim.

Mr. Anderson has performed as a sideman at the Festival too many times to count, and we are excited to welcome him for the first time as a guest adjudicator for this year’s High School Invitational.

3

Mr. Keberle has performed at our Festival numerous times with big bands including the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and we are proud to welcome him for the first time as guest adjudicator for this year’s High School Invitational.

ARTISTS/ADJUDICATORS

ALEXA TARANTINO

RYAN TRUESDELL

Alexa Tarantino is an award-winning, vibrant, young jazz saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, and educator. She performs regularly with her Alexa Tarantino Quartet and as a sidewoman with artists including Cecile McLorin Salvant, Ulysses Owens Jr., and Sherrie Maricle & the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Firefly, Alexa’s third record for Posi-Tone Records, will be released April 30, 2021. She was recently named one of the “Top 5 Alto Saxophonists of 2019” by the JazzTimes Critics’ Poll and nominated as a “Rising Star – Alto Saxophone” by the 2020 Downbeat Critics’ Poll.

Composer/producer Ryan Truesdell rose to prominence with his Gil Evans Project, born of his desire to restore and perform Gil Evans’ music directly from Gil’s original manuscripts. The magic of Gil’s writing lies in the details, and without his original scores, it is nearly impossible to accurately perform his music as originally intended. After years of painstaking research, countless hours of preparation, and with full support from the Evans family, Ryan Truesdell and the Gil Evans Project have made it possible, for the first time, to perform Gil’s music in its purest form: directly from his manuscripts.

Ms. Tarantino has previously performed at the Festival with Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and we are thrilled to welcome her for the first time as guest adjudicator for this year’s High School Invitational.

Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project performed the music of the Birth of the Cool at the main Festival in February; we welcome him to the High School Invitational as both guest adjudicator and as conductor of the feature performance.

HIGH SCHOOL

INVITATIONAL

The Elmhurst University Jazz Festival has been a model of excellence for the past 53 years. An important part of that tradition had been the High School Invitational, which began in 1980 and carried on through 1991. After a 21 year hiatus, it returned in 2012, and the Festival is proud to continue this unique educational offering as part of 2021’s events.

HIGH SCHOOL

PARTICIPANTS

Castle High School leads off the High School Invitational with their 12 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble. Hailing from Newburgh, Indiana, this is their first appearance at our Festival. The big band is part of a strong music tradition at the school and the group has won many awards through the years. They are under the direction of Mark Eifler. Another group making their first appearance at our Festival is the big band from Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A date conflict precluded their debut last year and we are happy to have them with us for 2021. They are well traveled, having appeared at the Savannah Music Festival in the past. The group is under the capable leadership of Greg Wells. Performing in the number three spot is the jazz band from Lake Central High School under the direction of Elliot Smith. The school is located in St. John, Indiana, and this is the second time that we have had the pleasure of their presence for the High School Invitational.

The 2021 Festival is pleased to welcome a second group from Castle High School. The Castle Jazz Bones and Friends is another component of the solid jazz program at the school from Newburgh. They are once again led by Mark Eifler. While the 2021 Festival is being presented in a virtual format, the long distance travel winner for this year is Westside High School from Omaha, Nebraska. This is their debut appearance at our Festival, and they are represented by a big band under the leadership of Tommy Krueger. Closing out the Festival is the big band from Dundee Crown High School in Carpentersville, Illinois. Elmhurst University has a strong connection to the school as there are currently four Dundee Crown alumni in the Elmhurst University Jazz Band. This is their second Festival appearance, and they are led by the talented Will Brocker.
