Retrofit AssessorWork and Opportunities

The UK’s push towards net-zero targets and rising energy costs, are driving demand for skilled professionals who can carry out energy efficiency/retrofit work for homes.

Moreover, the adoption of the PAS 2035 standard by multiple energy efficiency programmes is driving demand for Retrofit Assessors.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) energy efficiency scheme, which helps reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty, mandates compliance with PAS 2035. This means that a TrustMark approved Retrofit Coordinator will be required for all retrofit projects funded by the ECO scheme.

Retrofit Assessors can enhance their prospects by collaborating with Retrofit Coordinators, Local Authorities, Housing Associations, Utility Companies, and Installers. They can choose to either be selfemployed or can seek employment with one of these entities.

The earning potential for a Retrofit Assessor can vary depending on a variety of factors such as location, experience and project involvement. Self-employed Retrofit Assessors are likely to earn more than a Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) as the market is significantly newer, and they can potentially charge more per assessment due to the increased work involved.

Retrofit Assessors can also seek training to expand into other roles within the PAS 2035 retrofit process.

Social Housing

Social Housing providers continue to receive government funding to improve the energy efficiency of their worst performing homes. The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) and The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) has awarded millions to Local Authorities, and each one requires retrofit projects to be delivered in accordance with PAS 2035.

Available for DEAs

Qualified DEAs, with their extensive experience in conducting on-site property assessments, are well-suited to become approved Retrofit Assessors. The skills and knowledge they have gained from their domestic energy assessments are similar to those required for a full retrofit assessment.

Not a DEA?

Elmhurst provides industry recognised DEA qualification courses which can be enjoyed online or in the classroom.
