We have faith in God, as we understand God, and we have faith in the grace and power of love and compassion.

We have faith in the importance of a Catholic liberal

arts education that stresses values, service, and leadership, and we have faith that we can continue educating reflective, principled, and creative learners.

And we have faith that our graduates are making and will continue to make an impact on our society.

While our faith guides and strengthens us, it is our efforts that are being so richly rewarded.

Dear Friend of Elms College, On behalf of the trustees and the entire Elms College community, I am proud to present this annual report for 20032004. Like all years, this one was full of ups and downs; but as always, we celebrated our joys, bore our sorrows, and continued with our work. In short, we kept the faith – faith in ourselves – and in something greater than ourselves, faith in each other, and faith in the future.

Perhaps the most defining event of the year was the devastating loss of our beloved president Joachim W. Froehlich, Ph.D, who passed away Nov. 21, 2003 after a valiant one-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Dr. Froehlich, who joined the college in the summer of 2001 as our eighth president, provided visionary and spirited leadership during his tenure. He guided the college through a strategic planning process, launched a facilities master plan of campus expansion and improvement, and spearheaded student-recruiting projects that resulted in a critically needed 36 percent growth in enrollment. Dr. Froehlich devoted his adult life to strengthening and advancing Catholic education, and Elms College was the last institution to benefit from his vision and gifted leadership. We will be eternally grateful to him for that, and to God for blessing us with him.

Yet even as we mourned his passing, we held strong to our faith, maintaining the momentum he helped to create, and striving to live up to his standards and commitment to our mission.

The administrative structure of the college was refined to keep pace with the increased demands we are facing, and three vice president positions were created: for academic affairs, student affairs, and finance and operations. We reached out more often – and with more appreciation - to our donors and our alumni, and held events celebrating the contributions of dozens of benefactors to the college. We crafted new and improved programs in response to the needs of our students, offering more weekend and evening programs, as well as specially designed educational packages for working adults wishing to complete a bachelor’s degree in a timely fashion.

Our faith has gone a long way to strengthen and improve Elms College.

We appreciate the faith you hold in us as well. Make no mistake, the support you provide has a tremendous impact. In this report, I’m proud to introduce you to a few of the students who have benefited from the generous donations of our many friends and alumni. They embody and exemplify the mission of Elms College, and remind us why it is so important that we continue to keep the faith. (That’s also the lesson we learned from the 2004 Red Sox!) On behalf of everyone here, let me offer our heartfelt gratitude for your support of our mission, our vision, and the individuals who with their unique gifts and diverse perspectives, have come together to make up the College of Our Lady of the Elms.

Highlights July 1, 2003-June 30, 2004

2003 The college celebrated the nursing program’s 25th anniversary, honoring the program’s success in producing more than 1,000 skilled, compassionate, and dedicated nurses. Graduating with bachelor of science degrees after a nursing education guided by an ethical value system, a spirit of ecumenism, and a shared vision of the importance of service to others, many of these nurses have given their skills to individuals and institutions in the area over the years, greatly benefiting local residents. The nursing program was established in 1978 in response to a nationwide shortage of nurses and a desire to increase the college’s offerings of career programs for women.

July 2003 The first group of 32 registered nurses began a program designed to make it more convenient for them to complete their B.S. in nursing. In recognition of the current challenges in the health care field and the college’s mission of service to the community, Elms College offered a 50 percent reduction in tuition for these students. The intensive curriculum consists of 16 classes to fulfill the bachelor’s degree requirement, and all classes are scheduled on Mondays from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Students can complete the program in two years by taking two classes in each fall, spring, and summer session, and one during each January intersession.

October 26, 2003 The second Presidential Evening of Appreciation was held, celebrating the contributions of dozens of benefactors to the college. More than 130 guests attended, many of whom received special recognition for their monetary contributions to the college.

“The Presidential Gala celebrates the beneficence and support of those people whose past, present, and future counsel and support enable us to build on the success of our work here at Elms College,” said Patricia Burden, director of development.

November 10, 2003 – April 19, 2004 Four experts in different religious traditions spoke on their religion’s perspective on peace in the 2003-2004 Mary Dooley Lecture Series called “Peace: an Interfaith Exploration.”

• Rev. J. Bryan Hehir spoke on “A Theology of Peace: A Roman Catholic Perspective;”

• Dr. Ibrahim Abu-Rabi spoke on “A Theology of Peace: An Islamic Perspective;”

• Yehezkel Landau spoke on “A Theology of Peace: A Jewish Perspective;” and

• Dr. M. David Eckel spoke on “A Buddhist Vision 4

of Peace.”

November 21, 2003 The Elms College community suffered a devastating loss with the untimely death of beloved president Joachim W. Froehlich, Ph.D, who passed away at home after a valiant one-and-a-half year battle with cancer. Dr. Froehlich, who joined the college in the summer of 2001 as the eighth president, provided visionary and spirited leadership during his tenure.

December 13, 2003 Thirty-eight recent graduates gathered at a holiday party, the first-ever event specifically geared to young alumni.

The goals of the event were to encourage young alumni to participate, update contact information, and gather suggestions for future events. “We realize that our younger alums are a valuable resource for the college, and want to continue to design events that meet their schedules and tastes,” said acting president Rev. Mark Stelzer.

January 22, 2004 Elms College received a $10,000 grant that allowed students to study entrepreneurship, develop plans for starting their own businesses, and apply for small grants to fund their start-up costs. The grant funds came from the West Springfield–based Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, which funds local education incentives designed to encourage entrepreneurial activity among participating colleges in the Pioneer Valley. Part of the grant supported a faculty member’s salary to teach a new entrepreneurship course that gave students an opportunity to develop and implement their own business plans. The remainder of the award was used for grants to five Elms College students to be used to pay start-up costs for business ideas they developed in the entrepreneurship class: • Shawn Holt ’06 from Chicopee, a turnkey vending machine company; • Charles Kiablick ’06 from Northfield, a unique motorcycle sidecar that allows the motorcycle to lean; • Monnette Martin from Holyoke, an entertainment company specializing in karaoke, disc jockey, and party planning services; • Matthew Rex from Belchertown, a contemporary sports bar that highlights local athletics and focuses on female patrons; • Carolyn Rogers from Holyoke, a clear dining tray placemat for residents of long-term care facilities called a Med-Mat, that acts as a verification tool to avoid medication errors.

I’m taking advantage of every opportunity to learn about business here at Elms College. I coordinate student activities, I’m on the board of the Student Government Association, and I’m a student ambassador. Those may seem like little things, but they are teaching me about all aspects of business.

Combine that with my classes, and I’m way ahead in terms of getting a solid background. When I graduate, I have faith that there will be nothing I can’t do.

March 23, 2004 A panel discussion of Dan Brown’s popular novel The Da Vinci Code was held on March 23, 2004 featuring faculty from the departments of art, religious studies, and English.

Faculty panelists were Fr. Mark Stelzer, S.T.D., acting president, and a lecturer in religious studies, who spoke on Gnosticism, and historical references to Mary Magdalene; Martin Pion, associate professor of religious studies, who spoke on the historical and theological accuracy of The Da Vinci Code and Nikos Kazantzakis’ The Last Temptation of Christ, as well as the history of Opus Dei; James Gallant, Ph.D., professor of English, who spoke on the Knights Templar, holy grail theories, and heresy in the middle ages; and Geri Brunell, assistant professor of art, who spoke on the artwork of Leonardo Da Vinci. The event, which was open to the public, attracted an audience of 700.

April 15, 2004 High school students from Putnam High School, Chicopee High School, and West Springfield High School presented workshops on child abuse, bullying, and drug abuse at the 15th Annual High School Conference at Elms College on April 15, 2004. The theme of the conference was “Learning From Each Other: Looking Toward The Future.”

The conference is developed for high school students by high school students, working under the supervision of social work students from Elms College.

April 12-16, 2004 Elms College held its first Festival of the Arts, April 12 to 16, 2004. Events were scheduled Monday through Friday, mornings, afternoons, and evenings. They included daily mural painting; an international film day; a storytelling performance and workshop; a poetry panel; a jazz concert; and a percussion performance and workshop. Other events included theater and music performances, art exhibits and receptions, and poetry readings.

May 23, 2004 Raymond L. Flynn, former mayor of Boston and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, was speaker at the college’s commencement. Mr. Flynn was formerly the United States ambassador to the Vatican, where he was the U.S. representative in relief efforts around the world. He assisted the Vatican in the establishment of full diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Israel, and helped win Vatican support for the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, for U.N. peace-keeping efforts in the Balkans, and for U.S.-backed efforts to restore democracy in Haiti. Mr. Flynn served three terms as mayor of Boston, where his day-to-day involvement in the life of the city and hands-on style led him to be called the “Mayor of the Neighborhoods.” When he left office, his favorability rating was nearly 80 percent. His success in Boston led him to become a national spokesman on urban issues.

I think most people, if you give them a chance, want to help other people. The service requirement here reminds us of the importance of helping others in the community, and you get a million opportunities to do it at Elms. In my three years here, I’ve done mission work in Honduras, worked at a soup kitchen, and raised money for kids in the hospital. I’ve helped people, but I’ve gained something too. I guess that’s what it means when the college says its mission is to develop students rooted in faith and compassionate in heart.

2004 reunion leadership circle 18

As an honor class, it is customary to present a class gift. This year a common class project and need is upgrading and furnishing the Alumnae Library. Most class celebrants contributed toward the project by joining the newly established 2004 Reunion Leadership Circle with a pledge or gift at their individual class level. A collective formula has been designed to appeal to each class. The formula takes into consideration the number of years since graduation and multiplies it by ten to produce the class gift for each classmate. For example, the formula for the class of 1954 is 50 (number of years out) times 10, which equals $500. ways of giving

There are a variety of ways to support Elms College, each one valuable. Donations assist the college in continuing its mission of educating students in a tradition of excellence.

■ Gifts of Cash: Gifts of cash are available for immediate use by Elms College and are tax deductible. Checks should be payable to Elms College.

■ Personal Property: A gift of capital asset (art objects, rare books, equipment, etc.) can be given to the college for its educational purposes. Responsibility for appraisal rests with the donor.

■ Annuities and Trusts: Gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts, are examples of life income contributions to Elms College.

These gifts provide an opportunity for one to make a contribution to Elms College and at the same time increase annual income, receive a tax deduction and reduce taxes on capital gain.

■ Matching Gifts: Many businesses and corporations match the donations made by employees, retirees, and family members. To obtain information about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office. It is necessary to send the company’s matching gift form to Elms College along with your contribution.

■ Real Estate: Gifts of real estate can be given to the college outright, transferred to the college in a bargain sale. You can also contribute real estate to the college and reserve the right to occupy the property in your

lifetime. Each plan has its own tax and income benefits.

■ Gifts by bequest: By naming College of Our Lady of the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, it is possible to leave a significant legacy to the college. You may select a specific dollar amount, designate a fixed percentage of your estate, identify specific property, or after relatives and friends have been provided for, leave the remainder of the estate to the college.

■ Gifts of Life Insurance: The college may be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. It is also possible to invest in the Legacy of Life program and name the college as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. Policies are affordable and allow donors to make a major contribution to the college.

■ Gifts of Securities: These gifts may include stocks, mutual funds or bonds. Donations may be deducted at a fair market value on the date of transfer to the college. A contribution of highly appreciated securities will assist the college and at the same time reduce or eliminate the taxes paid on capital gain.

The Living Legacy Society was established in 1994 to honor alumni and friends of the College of Our Lady of the Elms who have established a charitable gift annuity or trust; included the college in their bequest; established a named endowed scholarship; or named Elms College as beneficiary of an insurance policy.

The Living Legacy Tree, designed by Theresa Amiot ’47, was constructed in 1997 and hung in the Rotunda.

The name of each member of the Living Legacy Society is located on a leaf of the tree, which symbolizes the shade and security provided by alumni and friends.
