Vision, imaginat Vision, imagination, and faith: These qualities can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Just as a rock pile contains within it the potential of a cathedral, Elms College, which was born of a vision, inspired by imagination, and built on faith, holds within it infinite possibilities to be extraordinary. It was the Sisters of St. Joseph who in 1899 envisioned a school in Chicopee, Massachusetts dedicated to educating the daughters of poor “A pile of rocks ceases to be immigrants. They built the foundations of such an institution – the physical foundations of wood and brick and mortar – and the figurative ones of programs, goals, and values. On those foundations, a rock pile when somebody the sisters and those who followed have built the structures, academic achievements, and purposeful lives that define Elms College and her students today. mundane – parts of the educational process with the insight of vision and the transcendent power of faith — Antoine de Saint-Exupery in our God. On The Cover:

Rocher Saint-Michel (Saint Michael’s Rock), topped with its 1,000year-old Romanesque chapel, seems to erupt out of the small town of Le Puy-en-Velay, France – the birthplace of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
The interior of the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière in Lyon, France – a spectacular testament to faith.
The original mission of the SSJ congregation, which was founded in Le Puy in 1650, is reflected today in the mission of Elms College: to focus on educating our students with “value systems which are characterized by a commitment to the service of others, a service that seeks just solutions to the many problems of today’s world.”
The photos of cathedrals in this annual report were taken by John M. Guimond, director of institutional marketing, during the October 2006 pilgrimage of 12 members of the Elms College community to Le Puy-en-Velay, France.

tion, and faith We strive to give our students – women and men of all backgrounds – the best teachers, the best exemplars, the best opportunities. In so doing, we dare to imagine that we can change their lives, helping them realize the fullness of their potential as people of principle, reflection, and creativity. And we dare to imagine that through them we can change, for the better, a world created and sustained by the Almighty, but entrusted to our stewardship. This is our overarching purpose, and our most profound goal. This moment in Elms College’s history is filled with infinite possibilities. We will embrace those possibilities and take on our future with deep faith and great confidence. We will continue to think big and dream big, believing that if we are true to our mission and traditions, and at the same time bold and creative in moving forward, we can transform what others see as rock piles into something of higher purpose, greater meaning, and worthy of the extraordinary vision that inspires us.

Letter from the chair Dear Friend of Elms College, On behalf of the trustees and the entire Elms College community, I am proud to present this annual report for 2005-2006. In many ways, this was a defining year for us: a year of new leadership, increased enrollment, and renewed commitment to the social justice principles of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. In short, it was a year of rediscovering, embracing, and celebrating the infinite possibilities before us. First and foremost, the year was defined by the arrival of James H. Mullen Jr., Ed.D. as our ninth president. Dr. Mullen took the helm on July 1, 2005, moving back home to his native western Massachusetts from his post as chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Dr. Mullen is committed to the Catholic intellectual tradition that frames Elms College, and we are confident that he will continue the Elms College legacy of inspired -- and inspiring -- leadership. This year we also continued the trend of increased enrollment of full-time undergraduate students, with an astounding increase of 22.2 percent over the year before.
2
This also was a year in which Elms College recommitted itself to the social justice charism embodied by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. The fall semester brought curriculum changes, course offerings, and a variety of presentations designed to promote thought and discussion throughout the college community on the topics of tolerance and diversity.

On behalf of everyone at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, let me offer heartfelt gratitude for your support. Working with you in the days and years to come, we can expect to transform many of our infinite possibilities into exciting and meaningful realities.

July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006
September 16, 2005 Elms College held its first all-college “Spirit Service Day,” when all students, staff, and faculty volunteered to perform acts of service to the community or to the college. The event was designed to promote and celebrate the college’s mission of service, to strengthen connections with surrounding towns and agencies, and to build community within the Elms College family.
Highlights
September 27, 2005 Elms College and Greenfield Community College signed an agreement allowing GCC graduates with associate’s degrees in human services to easily transfer into Elms’ social work bachelor’s degree program as juniors. The agreement is designed to make the transfer process more efficient for students, to promote academic coordination and cooperation between the two schools, and to encourage GCC’s graduates to continue on to earn a bachelor’s degree. October 3, 2005 Rev. Warren Savage from the Diocese of Springfield and the Elms College Religious Studies Department delivered the first presentation in the four-session Mary Dooley Lecture Series called Accomplishment, Challenge, and Relevance: Assessing the Second Vatican Council at 40. Rev. Savage’s talk examined the goals and evaluated the important teachings of this historical event. The lecture series went back to its roots, so to speak, since it was introduced in 1986 to further local awareness of the theology and vision of Vatican II. October 6-7, 2005 Two days of special events marked the college-wide celebration of the inauguration of James H. Mullen Jr., Ed.D., as the ninth president of Elms College. Highlights included a drama performance by students, faculty, staff, and alumni; an art display; a Mass; and an academic and interfaith procession to the installation ceremony at Holy Name of Jesus Church. Dr. Mullen was elected president of the college on December 6, 2004 by the board of trustees, and took office on July 1, 2005. October 2005 President James H. Mullen Jr. convened a task force to consider those elements of a liberal arts education we value for every student regardless of major, and to make recommendations to the board of trustees. The committee’s work culminated in six recommendations that reflect and strengthen the Catholic identity and liberal arts tradition of Elms College. October 13, 2005 An opening reception was held for a photo exhibit in Veritas Hall called Madonny Europy / Madonnas of Europe, which included 81 dramatic and beautiful photographs of Madonnas taken by internationally recognized photographer Janusz Rosikon. The images were made at some of the thousands of shrines in Europe dedicated to Mary, the Christian Mother of Jesus – arguably one of the most sacred icons of Christian culture. The exhibition was designed to examine why the image of the Mother of God has captured the religious and artistic imaginations of believers and nonbelievers for ages.

October 31, 2005 The Elms College Academic Resource Center (ARC) received tutor-training certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). This allows the program to set a standard of skills and training for tutors, and to issue CRLA certificates to individual tutors to recognize their successful work. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) was established in 1988, with one faculty member who provided tutorial assistance in writing two days a week. At present, it provides tutorial services for all Elms College students provided by 25 peer tutors, one graduate teaching assistant, three volunteer professional tutors, one faculty member tutoring part-time, and one full-time director. November 7, 2005 The relationship between Catholics and members of other religions as defined at Vatican II was the focus of the second Mary Dooley lecture at Elms College. The lecture was given by internationally known author and interfaith expert Rev. John T. Pawlikowski, professor of social ethics and director of CatholicJewish studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. The lecture was co-sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Western Massachusetts, the Council of Churches of Greater Springfield, the Jewish Federation of Greater Springfield, and the Hatikvah Holocaust Education and Resource Center. November 10, 2005 Ray Krone, the 100th death row inmate to be proven innocent and released, gave a presentation called "Witness to Innocence" as part of Elms College’s semester-long examination of the death penalty. Krone spent more than a decade in prison, some of it on death row, before DNA testing cleared his name. His presentation was part of Elms College’s Social Justice and the Liberal Arts series, which is designed to raise questions and promote discourse on social justice and community service issues among our students and the public. November 17, 2005 Sister Helen Prejean SSJ, who wrote the book Dead Man Walking, lectured on campus as part of the college’s semester-long focus on capital punishment. Sister Prejean, a nun with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille, is known internationally as a tireless crusader against the death penalty and wrote the book Dead Man Walking about her experiences visiting death row inmates in Louisiana. She was instrumental in shaping the Catholic Church’s vigorous opposition to all state executions as reflected in the new catechism of the Church. November 29 Students and staff at Elms College have erected 999 wooden crosses on the campus lawn, each bearing the name of one of the people executed in the United States since capital punishment was reinstated in 1977. They held a vigil hoping they will not have to erect the 1,000th cross, for a convicted murderer who was scheduled to be executed in North Carolina later that night. The vigil preceded a performance at the college of the play Dead Man Walking, which coincidentally had been scheduled for the same evening as the planned execution. The events were designed to encourage Elms College students and the public to examine and discuss capital punishment, which has been called “one of the key moral issues of our day.”

November 30 - December 3 The play Dead Man Walking was performed by the Elms College Theatre for Social Justice. The play, written by Tim Robbins and based on Sister Helen Prejean’s book, was presented in conjunction with the Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project. January 2006 Thirteen health sciences students from Elms College spent two weeks in January in Quito, Ecuador, visiting health care and social service agencies and getting intensive Spanish language tutoring. The group toured hospitals and clinics, an orphanage, and a home for the elderly to view health care delivery there first hand. The trip reflected the Elms College mission to prepare nursing, social work, and communication science and disorders students to serve the surrounding communities and beyond. Jan. 26, 2006 Elms College and the University of Massachusetts secured a project grant from the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education called Increasing the Pipeline to Ph.D. Education. The project is designed to encourage top honors students early in their nursing education to pursue an academic career, thus insuring the future availability of nursing professors. This will cut in half the average time it takes for Ph.D. nurse educators to complete their doctorate program. The students will be eligible for direct admission into the UMass-Amherst doctoral program upon completion of their baccalaureate degrees at Elms College. March 7, 2006 As part of their clinical training, Elms College communication sciences and disorders students began screening pre-kindergarten through first graders for speech, language, and hearing difficulties at Holy Name of Jesus School. During their junior year, Elms College students are required to observe screening, evaluation, and treatment, and in their senior year perform the process themselves under the supervision of a speech language pathologist. Elms College adjunct professor Angela Maniselleo performed the supervision. March 7-April 15, 2006 Twelve Elms College accounting students volunteered to help local low-income residents prepare their tax returns, and helped many claim tax credits to which they were entitled. In conjunction with the Holyoke Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition, the students identified taxpayers who were eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which often goes unclaimed. For many low-income individuals and families, the EITC often exceeds the amount of taxes owed, and results in a tax refund. March 13, 2006 Dr. Francine Cardman from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, delivered the third presentation in the Mary Dooley Lecture Series, called “Developing a Theology of Freedom in Dignitatis Humanae.” The lecture focused on the one of the 16 documents of Vatican II that affirms each person’s right to believe in God and worship Him according to one’s conscience.

March 23, 2006 Elms College hosted a program with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts called “Regional Town Hall Meeting to Restore the Rule of Law,” with three prominent politicians on the panel. Richard E. Neal, democratic Congressman from Massachusetts, Bob Barr, retired republican Congressman from Georgia, and Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, debated issues such as domestic spying and surveillance, torture, rendition (outsourcing torture to foreign countries), and secret prisons with “ghost detainees.” April 11, 2006 Bill Cosby spoke to high school students at Elms College in a program called “Pathways To Success: Dream of Your Possibilities, Believe in Yourself, Achieve a Bright Future.” The area high school students who attended had been working with Elms College nursing and social work students. April 24, 2006 Fr. Edward Vacek from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts delivered a talk entitled “Evaluating the Energy of Gaudium et Spes” as the final lecture in the Mary Dooley Lecture Series. Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World), identifies atheism as one of the most serious problems of our times, gives the most extensive treatment of marriage and the family in conciliar history, and declares the Church’s strong position on war and peace in the nuclear age. May 26 - June 4, 2006 The Elms College Social Work Department led a continuing education symposium in Greece for social work students, practitioners, and scholars. Called “Contemporary Trends in Clinical Social Work,” it focused on helping social workers creatively respond to the special cultural needs of diverse clients. Faculty from Elms College, Smith College, New York University, and the Technological Educational Institute in Patra, Greece delivered presentations on topics including end-of-life care, cultural competence, and advanced clinical practice. June 5, 2006 Elms College and Springfield Technical Community College signed a joint admissions agreement to provide barrier-free movement for STCC students from associate degree to baccalaureate and graduate degree programs at Elms College. The agreement will allow STCC graduates with associate’s degrees in accounting, biology, computer information technology, business, general studies, law enforcement, liberal arts, management, and marketing to easily transfer into Elms College baccalaureate programs as juniors. The agreement is designed to make the transfer process more efficient for students, to promote academic and student support partnerships between the two schools, and to encourage STCC’s graduates to continue on to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Barbara C. Bernard
Holyoke, Massachusetts Barbara C. Bernard is a retired newspaper columnist and local media celebrity. She was the winner of the Elms College Via Veritatis award in 1999. I know what it is like to need a college scholarship. My father died when I was young, and I knew that if I were going to go to college, I’d need some financial help. I received a full tuition scholarship that made it possible for me to attend Mt. Holyoke, so I can relate to the students who depend on this financial aid in paying for college. I am quite fortunate at this point in my life to be able to support institutions that I believe in, and I have established an endowed scholarship at Elms College for students who are studying the field of communications. I decided to do this at Elms because I had many friends – wonderful women – who were alums of the college, and through them, I realized it was quite an exceptional institution. Every single year, the student who receives my scholarship writes to thank me, and tells me how they are doing in school. Those letters absolutely melt my heart! I know the support is needed, and it is so nice to know that it is so appreciated. I feel very honored to be involved with such a remarkable place. I just love Elms College.

It is customary for reunion honor classes to present a class gift or to contribute toward a common
2006 reunion circle of honor
class project, such as upgrading and furnishing the Alumnae Library. This year, many class celebrants contributed toward that project at their individual class level to become members of the 2006 Reunion Circle of Honor. Giving levels for the Reunion Circle of Honor are determined by a formula that is specific to each class. The formula takes the number of years since graduation and multiplies it by 10 to create the giving level for each class. For instance, the formula for the class of 1956 is 50 (number of years out) times 10, which equals $500. We thank those who joined the Reunion Circle of Honor by contributing at their individual class level, and those who chose to double or even triple their gift.

ways of giving
There are many ways to give to Elms College, and each has its distinctive benefits. Most contributions qualify as charitable deductions through federal and state income taxes. The Development Office is always delighted to discuss ways of giving in more detail. As with all financial considerations, we encourage you to discuss potential tax advantages and other aspects of charitable giving with your attorney, tax advisor, or financial consultant. Whether you give an unrestricted gift that will go to the area of greatest need or a specific gift to a program or scholarship, your gift will make a difference to the future of Elms College and its students. We appreciate your generosity. ■ Gifts of Cash: Gifts of cash are available for immediate use by Elms College and are tax deductible. Checks should be payable to Elms College. ■ Personal Property: A gift of capital asset (art objects, rare books, equipment, etc.) can be given to the college for its educational purposes. Responsibility for appraisal rests with the donor. ■ Annuities and Trusts: Gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts are examples of life income contributions to Elms College. These gifts provide an opportunity for one to make a contribution to Elms College and at the same time increase annual income, receive a tax deduction, and reduce taxes on capital gain. ■ Matching Gifts: Many businesses and corporations match the donations made by employees, retirees, and family members. To obtain information about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office. It is necessary to send the company’s matching gift form to Elms College along with your contribution. ■ Real Estate: Gifts of real estate can be given to the college outright or transferred to the college in a bargain sale. You can also contribute real estate to the college and reserve the right to occupy the property in your lifetime. Each plan has its own tax and income benefits.
■ Gifts by bequest: By naming College of Our Lady of the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, it is possible to leave a significant legacy to the college. You may select a specific dollar amount, designate a fixed percentage of your estate, identify specific property, or after relatives and friends have been provided for, leave the remainder of the estate to the college. ■ Gifts of Life Insurance: The college may be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. It is also possible to invest in the Legacy of Life program, and name the college as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. Policies are affordable and allow donors to make a major contribution to the college. ■ Gifts of Securities: These gifts may include stocks, mutual funds, or bonds. Donations may be deducted at a fair market value on the date of transfer to the college. A contribution of highly appreciated securities will assist the college and at the same time reduce or eliminate the taxes paid on capital gain. For further information regarding donations to Elms College, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (413) 594-6123.

members of the living legacy society
The Living Legacy Society was established in 1994 to honor alumni and friends of the College of Our Lady of the Elms who have established a charitable gift annuity or trust; included the college in their bequest; established a named endowed scholarship; or named Elms College as beneficiary of an insurance policy. The Living Legacy Tree, designed by Theresa Amiot ’47, was constructed in 1997 and hung in the Berchmans Hall Rotunda. The name of each member of the Living Legacy Society is engraved on a leaf of the tree, which symbolizes the shade and security provided to us by alumni and friends. * * * * *

The accompanying notes are an integral part of these financial statements.
This report has been prepared by the Offices of Institutional Advancement and Institutional Marketing. The list of donors reflects gifts to the college during the fiscal year 2005-2006. Donations made since July 1, 2006 will appear in the next annual report. We have taken great care to ensure that complete and accurate listings appear. However, due to the large number of donors, to whom we are most grateful, a mistake may have gone unnoticed. Should you find an error or omission, please bring it to the attention of the Alumni Office or the Institutional Advancement Office. Please note that an individual’s name may appear on several lists, and also that some donors have requested that their gifts be anonymous. Š2006, Elms College
