ll 1.5 billion of us, inhabitants of the blue marble called Earth, are connected - in ways great and small, obvious and elusive, simple and complex - into a great and glorious human web. There is a rabbinic saying to the effect that every person walking down the street is preceded by an invisible choir of angels crying, "Make way! Make way for the image of God." It is a dramatic way of stating what we believe and know and teach as a Catholic institution: that what binds us together - all 1.5 billion of us is that each of us bears the divine imprint; each of us is loved equally by our God; and each of us is called to honor the divinity in all other human beings.

This is the very foundation on which the College of Our Lady of the Elms was built, inspired by the vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph, according to which “all people are united in one earth community of love, unity, and reconciliation.” It is this vision of unity that enriches our every action, drives our daily efforts, and inspires our passionate devotion to our mission: to help our students to become people “rooted in faith, educated in mind, compassionate in heart, responsive to civic and social obligations, capable of adjusting to change without compromising principle.” Elms College today is a strong, resilient, and beautiful fabric woven by our students, our alumni, and our

community. It is a living fabric which grows more substantial and more striking every day, as the lives and minds of our students serve as the raw warp threads that intertwine with the active weft made up of our learning community, influenced by the legacy of our founding mothers, and bearing the profound imprint of Catholic social teaching which guides us. Recognizing that our roles as educators and learners must intersect with our obligations as human beings, we have tried in the past year, and will continue to try, to more perfectly balance academics and action, scholarship and faith, inspiration and effort, financial resources and human capacity.

Our efforts are dependent on the generous hearts and open minds of our alumni, friends, and donors - to help provide the ongoing financial support that such a sweeping undertaking requires. By joining us in this collaboration of caring, you help us insure that we can continue our important work, as we have for more than 80 years educating reflective, principled, and creative learners.

Board Chair’s Message Dear friend of Elms College, On behalf of the trustees and the entire Elms community, I am proud to present this annual report for 2008-2009. More than most, it has been a year of great change and shifting circumstances: in the United States, in our community, and here at the college. We are proud to report that, by working together and remaining true to our mission, we have adjusted to the demands of these changes, and continue our important task of educating reflective, principled, and creative learners. First and foremost, the year began with record full-time enrollment of 792 and total enrollment of 1,346 and was defined by an impressive series of shifts in leadership positions, led by Dr. Walter Breau, who stepped up to serve as interim president for the year. Dr. Breau generously and seamlessly maintained the duties of leadership, and continued the work of the college’s administration while we searched for – and found – our 10th president, Sister Mary Reap. On the international and national level, the year was marked by the most severe economic downturn we have witnessed in decades. While the economy struggled, we tightened our collective belts at the Elms, and focused on continuing to provide Catholic higher education of the highest quality within the limits of our financial and human resources.

Our reward, as always, was the success of our students. From the men’s basketball team, which earned the program’s firstever ranking in a national Top 25 Poll, to the team of accounting majors who came in second in the Stock Market Challenge, beating 32 teams of local financial professionals, they have continued to make us proud. Then in May, we graduated 277 undergraduate and graduate students at our 78th commencement, and sent them into the world as educated adults with the twin graces of faith and reason, and the moral character born of the resulting wisdom. On behalf of everyone at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, let me offer our heartfelt gratitude for your support. Your continued faith and prayers are a sure sign of the rightness of our efforts.

President’s Message Together As One I am honored to introduce this 20082009 annual report of the College of Our Lady of the Elms. While I have been president of the college for only a few months, I share your great pride in the continuing good work done here through the combined efforts of a committed administration, faculty, and staff; an outstanding student body; and a loyal and devoted group of alumni.

This is the task that we have taken upon ourselves at Elms College: to be people of such widened compassion, and to help shape such people.

Indeed, it is together – united in our mission and tradition – that we continue the work begun decades ago by the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is together that we face the everyday challenges presented by our contemporary world of financial uncertainty and changing societal expectations. And it is together that we successfully meet those challenges, and continue to serve, not only our students, but also our God, our faith, and our community.

In this annual report, we invite you – our alumni, friends, faculty, and staff – to reflect upon the year just past, and the benefits our united efforts have had on the lives of our students. From their academic and athletic achievements, to their community service and devotion to values, they are a proud reflection of our work.

Albert Einstein wrote: “a human being is part of the whole universe ... (but) we experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest. … This delusion is a kind of prison for us … Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

We will continue to strive to live what we believe, embracing and communicating the values of Christ’s Gospel, and serving our neighbors both locally and globally.

We have been blessed with so much through God’s grace, and we are called to share our blessings. We will continue to do so, with His help, and with yours. Thank you for your generous gifts and your heartfelt prayers. We are humbled by your support, and we celebrate it here.

A Global Perspective Elms College is committed to educating globally competent citizens. We provide a variety of international study opportunities including trips to Japan, China, Poland, Ireland, France, England, and Greece; minors in Irish and Asian studies, and double majors in legal studies and social work with Spanish; and a 10-year-old exchange program with Japan’s Kochi Women’s University. In addition, the Elms Collegebased Irish Cultural Center and the Polish Center for Discovery and Learning bring international programming and prominent speakers to campus. Last year, Elms hosted Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Irish president Mary McAleese, and Irish general consulate David Barry. Inspired by one of the key themes of Catholic social teaching – care for God’s creation – we made protecting the environment the annual topic for first year seminar classes and the Social Justice and the Liberal Arts series in 2008-2009. From educational programs and lectures to increased recycling efforts and energy conservation projects, the college community worked together to understand environmental issues and to implement methods that will make our existence more earth-friendly.

from the small, intimate campus to the strong sense of community. Among Marie’s seminal influences through high school and college were five women

educators, all graduates of Elms, who Marie says were “inspirational and motivational teachers. anet Mardenborough ’73 was the inspiration for Jamie Forhan’s decision to bequeath a substantial portion of his estate to Elms. Janet and Jamie met when

she was a senior at Elms and he was a student at the University of Massachusetts at

Amherst. Janet, an English major, loved Elms, he says, and until her untimely death in 1973, she was poised to begin a career as a school teacher. “She could not have had a better college experience,” says Jamie. New Programs Elms College remains responsive to the educational needs demonstrated in our community. Last fall, for example, we added a master’s degree program in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in response to an unprecedented increase in the diagnosis of ASD, and a lack of professionals trained in its treatment. Ways of Giving n Elms College education is a

steppingstone for many of its graduates - to lives full of

meaningful work, success, and service to others. It is an investment that yields tremendous personal dividends. Gifts of all sizes allow us to provide the financial assistance that many of our students need to reach their academic goals, to develop innovative academic programs to respond to the demands of today’s world, and to acquire and improve our human resources, facilities, and equipment. Many of our students have access to the Elms only because of donors like you who support what we do and how we do it. Your gift really does make a difference here.

Gifts of Cash: Gifts of cash and credit card are available for immediate use by Elms College and are tax deductible. You may choose to visit www.elms.edu/give for a direct credit card gift or call to arrange for monthly credit card deductions. Electronic fund transfer (EFT) is also possible. Gifts of Securities: These gifts may include stocks, mutual funds, or bonds. Donations are credited at fair market value on the date of transfer to the college. A gift of highly appreciated securities will assist the college and at the same time reduce or eliminate the taxes paid on capital gain. Matching Gifts: Many businesses and corporations match the gifts made by employees, retirees, and family members. To obtain information about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office or use the Elms weblink to search for your company.

Gifts through Retirement Plan: You may include Elms College as a beneficiary of your IRA. Or, you may be able to take advantage of the Pension Plan Act of 2006 renewed for 2008 and 2009 which allows individuals age 70 or older to make a distribution of as much as $100,000 from their IRA directly to charitable organizations without tax penalty. Gifts of Personal Property: A gift of capital assets (art objects, rare books, equipment, etc.) can be given to the college for its educational purposes. Responsibility for appraisal rests with the donor. The Elms has discretion to sell or retain the items. Gifts of Real Estate: Gifts of real estate can be given to the college outright or transferred to the college in a bargain sale, upon discussion, review, and approval of the transaction. Some donors may be eligible to contribute real estate to the college and reserve the right to occupy the property in their lifetime. Each plan has its own tax and income benefits. Planned Gifts: Planned gifts are a wonderful way to support the Elms. Some types of planned gifts allow donors to receive income tax credits or deductions while ensuring they or loved ones receive income as well. • Gifts by Bequest By naming the College of Our Lady of the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, it is possible to leave a significant legacy to the college. You may select a specific dollar amount, designate a fixed percentage of your estate, identify specific property, or, after relatives and friends have been provided for, leave the remainder of the estate to the college. • Annuities and Trusts Gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts are examples of life income contributions to Elms College. These gifts provide an opportunity for one to make a contribution to Elms College and at the same time increase annual income, receive a tax deduction, and reduce taxes on capital gain. • Gifts of Life Insurance The college may be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. It is also possible to invest in the Living Legacy program and name the college as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. Policies are affordable and allow donors to make a major contribution to the college. • Gifts of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) The college may be named as the beneficiary of an IRA.

Service The compassionate hearts of generations of Elms College students, faculty, staff, and alumni have changed the world. Partnerships In the past year, Elms College has expanded and strengthened its partnerships within the community. Believing in the power of collaboration and sharing of resources, we teamed up with the Diocese of Springfield, community organizations such as Junior Achievement and the Interfaith Council of Western Massachusetts, and educational institutions such as Holyoke Catholic High School and Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School. Our combined efforts allow us to reach and serve hundreds of people beyond the confines of our campus.
