PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends, It gives me great pleasure to close out our eighty fifth year with the completion of the most significant project of the last decade. Building the Center for Natural and Health Sciences was a tremendous effort that involved a great deal of support, planning, and commitment from the entire Elms community. The building has met our goal of elevating our standard of academic excellence while maintaining our spirit. This 24-month campaign would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of our alumni, staff, board of trustees, and friends of the college who believe in the college’s commitment to providing the best for our students. The Center for Natural and Health Sciences will provide the technology, laboratory equipment, and learning environment to deliver the highest quality of education. As we celebrate our eighty fifth year, it is important to note that the spirit of our founders is still present. When St. Joseph’s Church in Springfield was demolished several years ago, the Diocese of Springfield salvaged several of the stained glass windows and graciously offered them to our building project. Through additional generous donors the windows have undergone restoration under the skilled artistry of a local firm and will be

prominently featured in the Center for Natural and Health Sciences. Through this gift we were able to literally build a pillar of our foundation into this new building. More importantly, every facet–from the curriculum, to the faculty, to the hallways–will incorporate the mission of our founders. In addition to the completion of the Center for Natural and Health Sciences, we have continued to raise the college’s profile, receiving notable recognition from both U.S. News and World Report and BestColleges.com. I look forward to what this institution will become when the Center for Natural and Health Sciences is bubbling with students looking to find the next cure, build the next technological breakthrough, or become leaders in the healthcare profession. I am deeply appreciative of the support of all our alumni and friends. It is because of you that we can continue to grow and imbue the values of the Sisters of St. Joseph with each new student, class, and project at the College of Our Lady of the Elms.

The St. Joseph lily represents how he was chosen from among other men by the blossoming of his staff like a lily; the measuring tool represents his profession as a carpenter.

Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation Joins the St. Joseph Society During the Presidential Evening of Appreciation on October 19, 2013, the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation will be officially inducted into the St. Joseph Society–the highest level of giving at Elms College, reserved for benefactors whose lifetime giving totals $1 million. The foundation reached this important milestone in January with a five-year commitment to the Center for Natural and Health Sciences totaling $500,000. The Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation has a robust history of supporting the college. An earlier five-year commitment of $500,000 from the foundation provided funding for the initial planning of the new center, along with support for athletics programs and technological upgrades to classrooms. Additionally, the foundation has supported the Step Forward/Step Ahead (now Quest) and Peacejam programs at Elms College. The foundation is now a significant part of the largest campus project in the last 18 years. What makes the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation such a fitting benefactor for Elms College is how closely their values align with the college’s values. The foundation’s mission to “support the development of Hampden County children, youth and families by ensuring they have the opportunities and supports needed to achieve their full potential,” complements Elms College’s history of awarding approximately 90 percent of students with financial aid and becoming a home to a freshman class that is more than 50 percent firstgeneration college students.

Additionally, the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation takes a holistic approach in their investment strategy, identifying organizations that address the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of local youth. Similarly, Elms College has gone to great lengths to build a curriculum and foster a campuswide environment that educates the whole person. Elms students can be found advocating for mental health awareness through the Active Minds Club, leading community-building projects in their senior capstone class, and organizing campus activities that promote active and healthy lifestyles. “The Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation is proud to support the Center for Natural and Health Sciences at Elms College. The new building will further the foundation’s mission of supporting youth in Hampden County and providing educational opportunities that improve their quality of life,” said John H. Davis, senior trustee of the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation. Support from the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation has been instrumental in erecting the Center for Natural and Health Sciences, providing a quality education to numerous students in Hampden County and beyond.

The first cohort of students in the Elms College and Springfield Technical Community College degree completion program graduated in May.

The Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies organized The Center for Law and Justice Lecture Series, featuring nationally recognized legal professionals to speak on campus.

With 20 wins, the Elms baseball team had its highest win total ever.

Brendan Reed ’13 won two awards at the regional Enactus competition, and an award at the national competition which led to an internship at Unilever. Brendan’s project involved creating a speaker’s series on community issues at a local bakery.

As part of his capstone project for his Doctorate of Nursing Practice, Br. Michael Duffy, D.N.P., A.P.R.N.-B.C., assistant clinical professor, developed a mobile nursing unit called the CaRe VaN, to provide free basic healthcare services to the homeless and underserved in Chicopee.

The bond between the College of Our Lady of the Elms and its students is one that remains intact long after students graduate. For Clare Ryan ‘49, this strong connection inspired her to make a major gift to the Center for Natural and Health Sciences and pledge a three-year commitment to the Campus Enrichment Fund. As an undergraduate student at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Clare studied English, with a minor in history. She admired the small class sizes at Elms College and cites this as a reason for choosing the school. A native of western Massachusetts, Clare had originally pictured herself attending college to become a nurse. After she realized “math and science weren’t [her] thing,” she shifted her ambitions in another direction. Clare pursued her master’s degree in library science at the University of Pittsburgh, after which she worked in cataloging at libraries across the country: from Baltimore, to Wisconsin, to Virginia, and New Hampshire, where she eventually retired in 1989. Life carried Clare in many different directions; however, she always remained loyal to her alma mater. Clare has not only served as a class agent for many years, but she also remains a frequent guest at Elms College alumni events and special donor receptions. Clare was drawn to nursing from the beginning, which allowed her to appreciate the importance of the profession and the universal need for qualified nurses. This is the driving force for her support of the Center for Natural and Health Sciences. She notes that if the college did not continue to advance in its facility and program development, “it would get left behind.”

& Accounting students partnered with Springfield Partners for Community Action to help file approximately 2,000 tax returns to low-income workers in the community.

The Academic Resource Center held a Rubber Duck drive for Sandy Hook Elementary students in their new school. Police officers would hide the rubber ducks in the school every day and it became a game for the children to find them.

Elms College graduated 406 students in May, our largest number ever.

Elms College partnered with Greenfield Community College to offer a joint bachelor degree program with a major in social work.

Undergraduate business students won the IACBE regional conference competition against a group of MBA students.

Kyle and Sara Seyboth ’05 both have joined Clare in the three-year pledge to support operational expenses for the Center for Natural and Health Sciences. The Seyboths, who met one another at Elms College, now work as a real estate team in eastern Massachusetts. They indicate that they owe much of who they are to their alma mater. “Elms College was the foundation that helped shape who we have become,” said Kyle. As an accounting major and the men’s basketball program’s second all-time leading scorer, he says the Elms is where he learned time management skills, which is important in his career. Sara identifies her time spent at Elms College as “an awesome experience” and says, “everyone knew everyone,” which she loved. As a computer information technology major, she attributes her success to the small class sizes and supportive atmosphere that resonated throughout the school. The tight knit community within Elms College motivated Sara and Kyle to contribute to the campus enrichment fund; by doing so, they know they can make a difference in the lives of Elms students. “It’s important to give back,” Kyle said. “This is where their lives start.” He emphasizes the importance of a solid foundation and that in order to compete with other colleges, Elms must continue to move forward and maintain modern capabilities for its students. Because of the generosity of benefactors like Clare, Kyle, and Sara, Elms students will have resources and opportunities that may not have been previously available. When students reflect on their time at the college, they will recognize the true significance of the foundation where it all began.

Janet Moore, Ph.D., R.N., associate professor of nursing, and students Salvatore Dimino ’13 and David Paier ’13 developed a quality improvement project to reduce medical errors at an offsite clinic. They hope to publish the study in a nursing journal.

Br. Michael Duffy, D.N.P., A.P.R.N.-B.C., assistant clinical professor, was honored by the Rotary Club of Chicopee with the Paul Harris Award, given to individuals who live by the Rotary Club’s slogan “Service Above Self.”

Elms College partnered with Mount Wachusett Community College to offer a joint bachelor degree program with a major in psychology and an RN-BS program.

Assistant Professor of English Dan Chelotti, M.F.A., published a book of poetry and embarked on an international book tour.

Unveiling the Center for Natural and Health Sciences For the last 16 months, Elms College students, faculty, and staff have become familiar with the exterior of the 22,000 square foot Center for Natural and Health Sciences. Starting with nothing more than a hole in the ground, they’ve acclimated to the giant mounds of earth, buzzing saws, and rumbling dump trucks as the structure began to take shape. No longer is the building a skeletal frame draped with bricks and mortar–it is an extension of the campus. From the pattern of the bricks to the matching dormers on the top floor, the Center for Natural and Health Science’s place next to Berchmans Hall makes it seem like it has always been a part of the campus. In January 2014 students, faculty, and staff will become familiar with the interior of the Center for Natural and Health Sciences, the very reason for the building’s existence, when the doors open and classes begin for the Spring semester.

The Center for Natural and Health Sciences will provide the facilities and resources to best prepare students in science, technology, and mathematics fields, making students more competitive when they enter the job force. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 22 percent increase of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) occupations from 2004-2014, meaning the student inquiries in these fields are only going to increase and the college is poised to be a part of that growth. For 85 years, Elms College has provided an education that instilled the core values of faith, justice, community, and excellence. With the Center for Natural and Health Sciences, Elms College will continue to provide that education while staying a step ahead of the needs of the next generation.

A spacious portico will welcome students on the first floor through a beautiful arched entryway, leading to computer information technology laboratories on one side, and a stadium-style lecture hall on the other. Additional laboratory space will be available on the second floor, alongside a high-technology classroom outfitted for up to 40 students. Biology and chemistry laboratories, from introductory to advanced levels, will inhabit the second and third floors.The fourth floor will house the nursing skills and simulation laboratory, an innovative environment that simulates clinical and hospital settings and will rival the modernized facilities available at much larger nursing universities.

Elms College requested a design that would reflect the architecture of Berchmans Hall.

The design included a nursing skills and simulation laboratory, modern laboratories for biology, chemistry, and computer information technology, as well as additional lecture halls and a dedicated facility for studentfaculty research.

The 22,000 square foot, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building reduced its carbon footprint by using recycled steel.

The water efficient building uses low flow plumbing and landscaping that will not require irrigation. The new HVAC system will be energy efficient and reduce utility expenses and its environmental impact.

The five-story building will connect to Berchmans Hall on each floor. There will be an elevator and handicapped accessible ramps.

Letter from the Chair Dear Friend of Elms College, Over the past 85 years, Elms College has provided a quality, values-based education to more than 9,500 women and men. And as we celebrate our 85th anniversary, it is gratifying to remark on the college’s growth and consistent commitment to our mission. Most notably, we have markedly improved our financial stability, increased our academic offerings, and expanded our presence and influence in the region, all while remaining true to the vision of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. The completion of the Center for Natural and Health Sciences is testament to the college’s commitment to offer the opportunity to our students to become their absolute best in their academic fields. I am profoundly grateful for the generous support from Cynthia and William Lyons, the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation, Chicopee Savings Bank, my fellow trustees, and the hundreds of alumni and friends who helped make this significant addition to our beautiful campus a reality.

Acknowledging the growth of the Nursing program, we established the School of Nursing, the first such academic school in the college’s history. Those attending the School will benefit from the new nursing skills lab and additional dedicated learning space in the LEED-certified Science Center. And through our partnerships with several community colleges in western Massachusetts an Elms education is available to a growing and diverse population of students. As an alumna, it gives me great pleasure to see how the college has evolved to earn its highlyregarded reputation in the region. Because of the support of friends and benefactors like you, we continue to offer a memorable and valuable educational experience for our students while ever-mindful of our commitment to educate reflective, principled and creative learners. Ways of Giving An Elms College education is a steppingstone for many of its graduates—to lives full of meaningful work, success, and service to others. It is an investment that yields tremendous personal dividends. Gifts of all sizes allow us to provide the financial assistance that many of our students need to reach their academic goals, to develop innovative academic programs, to respond to the demands of today’s world, and to acquire and improve our human resources, facilities, and equipment. Many of our students have access to the Elms only because of benefactors like you who support what we do and how we do it. Your gift really does make a difference here. Gifts of Cash Gifts of cash and credit card are available for immediate use by Elms College and are tax deductible. You may choose to visit www.elms.edu/give for a direct credit card gift or call to arrange for monthly credit card deductions. Electronic fund transfer (EFT) is also possible. Gifts of Securities These gifts may include stocks, mutual funds or bonds. Donations are credited at fair market value on the date of transfer to the college. A gift of highly appreciated securities will assist the college and at the same time reduce or eliminate the taxes paid on capital gain. Matching Gifts Many businesses and corporations match the gifts made by employees, retirees, and family members. To obtain information about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office or use the Elms weblink to search for your company. Gifts through Retirement Plan You may include Elms College as a beneficiary of your plan. Gifts of Personal Property A gift of capital assets (art objects, rare books, equipment, etc.) can be given to the college for its educational purposes. Responsibility for appraisal rests with the benefactor. The Elms has discretion to sell or retain the items.

Gifts of Real Estate Gifts of real estate can be given to the college outright or transferred to the college in a bargain sale, upon discussion, review and approval of the transaction. Some benefactors may be eligible to contribute real estate to the college and reserve the right to occupy the property in their lifetime. Each plan has its own tax and income benefits. Planned Gifts Planned Gifts are a wonderful way to support the Elms. Some types of planned gifts allow benefactors to receive income tax credits or deductions while ensuring they or loved ones receive income as well. Gifts by Bequest By naming the College of Our Lady of the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, it is possible to leave a significant legacy to the college. You may select a specific dollar amount, designate a fixed percentage of your estate, identify specific property or, after relatives and friends have been provided for, leave the remainder of the estate to the college. Annuities and Trusts Gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts are examples of life income contributions to Elms College. These gifts provide an opportunity for one to make a contribution to Elms College and at the same time increase annual income, receive a tax deduction and reduce taxes on capital gain. Gifts of Life Insurance The college may be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. It is also possible to invest in the Living Legacy program and name the college as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. Policies are affordable and allow benefactors to make a major contribution to the college. Gifts of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) The college may be named as the beneficiary of an IRA. Matching Gifts Many companies have matching gift programs that can double or triple the value of your gift to the college.
