Highlights of 2009-2010 Elms College is rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition.

It is defined by values, standards, and traditions we have upheld throughout our 82-year history. The activities and achievements of the entire college community demonstrate our commitment to educating reflective, principled, and creative learners in the tradition of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Leadership in Action Sister Mary Reap became our 10th president, and immediately began the work of moving the college forward. October 2009 brought a week of celebration and programs as Sister Mary, who served as president of Marywood University in Pennsylvania for 19 years, was installed in office.

We welcomed 10 new trustees. The full board of 25 members brings a wealth of experience to the leadership of Elms College.

The new leadership team infused the college with renewed energy. Projects included examining the core values by which we operate; determining where to expand programs in response to community needs; and strengthening our commitment to our Catholic identity.

Reaffirming Our Catholic Identity Students often incorporate service projects that deepen their learning. For the fifth year in a row, business students helped people prepare their income taxes as part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Sister Jane Morrissey with Dorothy Day Program participants.

Our Catholic identity is embedded throughout everything we do. Empowered by love and faith, Elms College seeks to promote the traditions of our founders, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, through programs that challenge all members of our college community spiritually and ethically.

Our students perform community service in many different ways. Twenty-four incoming first year students participated in the 2009 Dorothy Day Program, designed to instill the value of service in them from their first day at the Elms. Participants arrive on campus a week early and work on community service projects, learning in the process that they can change the world for the better.

Many of our students went on lifechanging mission trips. In 2009-2010, 42 students traveled to Jamaica, Honduras, West Virginia, and New Orleans to help strangers in need. By reaching out to other cultures, they embrace the possibilities of changes that can be made through their efforts.

The Mary Dooley Lecture Series completed its 24th year. It brought prominent speakers with diverse religious backgrounds to campus to discuss themes of religious studies and spirituality.

Commitment to Our Community We continue to extend our hand in a spirit of hospitality. As always, we are guided by the charism of our founders, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, to “unite neighbor with neighbor, and neighbor with God.”

& We partnered with public and Catholic schools. Our Education Division offered programs to teachers in Chicopee, Springfield, and the Springfield Diocese to help them increase their knowledge and improve their skills.

We offered classes onsite at Westover Air Reserve Base. The first graduating class from our RN-to-B.S. completion program at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

We reached out geographically to nurses in the Berkshires. The first 14 students graduated from our RN-to-B.S. completion program at Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) in Pittsfield. Elms faculty taught classes at BMC, making it more accessible to nurses there.

We believe in the value and power of collaboration. We formed partnerships with the International Language Institute in Northampton to encourage international students to pursue degrees here; and with Holyoke Community College enabling associate’s degree graduates to complete their bachelor’s degrees from Elms by taking courses on the HCC campus.

We offered Lifelong Learning workshops to our neighbors. Members of the community were invited to take part in non-credit courses ranging from ballroom dancing to Palestinian culture.

Our faculty taught classes at Westover to accommodate students there from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). We were named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. We participated in the national Yellow Ribbon Program to help students pay for education not covered by the G.I. Bill; and were honored to work with students such as Jerod A. Brammer ’10, a decorated veteran who served more than eight years in the Army, including 25 months of combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jerry completed a bachelor’s degree in biology here after his return from active duty.

We cosponsored a benefit at the Basketball Hall of Fame with the Flutie Foundation for Autism. Using funds raised from benefits like this one, the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism awarded the college a grant to pay for scholarships to our graduate programs in autism spectrum disorders.

Excellence in Academics We are proud of the excellence of our faculty. In the English Department, professors Tom Cerasulo, Ph.D., and Robert King, Ph.D., published books, and their colleague Dan Chelotti, M.F.A., had six poems published.

David Peters ’11, winner of a Grinspoon Entrepreneurial Spirit Award

The Humanities Division focused on writers.

We are proud of the excellence of our students.

As the college’s Shaughness Family Chair for the Study of the Humanities, Dr. Cerasulo created a visiting writers series, bringing local and national writers to campus to read and discuss their work.

Linnea Guidi, Gianna Gula, and David Peters were named recipients of Grinspoon Entrepreneurial Spirit Awards. They received monetary awards, and displayed and marketed their businesses to more than 300 guests, including local bankers.

Three members of our faculty earned their doctorates this year.

Our accounting students excelled in the Stock Market Challenge. For the fourth year in a row, the Elms team competed against more than 160 finance and accounting professionals, including seasoned bankers, investment managers, and accountants, and placed in the top five finishers.

Nursing professors Cheryl Sheils, Ed.D., RN, and Janet Moore, Ph.D., as well as Joyce Hampton, Ed.D., professor of English as a second language, all earned their doctorates.

One music professor issued three new recordings. Christopher Bakriges, Ph.D., also had his research in musical transculturation acknowledged in American and British music journals.

When Colette Green graduated in 2010 with a degree in nursing, it was the culmination of her 10-year relationship with Elms College, and the accomplishment of a goal that seemed all but impossible for her and her family.

Colette Green ’10: An Impossible Dream Realized, Thanks to One Donor’s Scholarship Bequest

Colette became familiar with the Elms as a sixth grader, when she enrolled in Step Forward, an enrichment program for youth with high academic potential from underserved populations. After six years of academic enrichment and cultural activities on the Elms campus, Colette was sure this was the college for her. “I was the first person in my family to go to college, so it was a big deal,” Colette said. “My parents and I didn’t know how we were going to pay for it; it seemed almost impossible. Then I found out I was getting the Victoria C. Riel Nurses Scholarship. If it hadn’t been for that, I don’t think I would have been able to come to the Elms.” The scholarship that made Colette’s dream possible was endowed by Roland H. Riel in memory of his wife, who died in 1989. Mr. Riel, who died in 2005 at the age of 90, had stipulated in his will that his bequest go towards an endowed scholarship for nursing students at the Elms. Collette, who was a dean’s list student and received the 2010 Sisters of St. Joseph Service Award, now works as a registered nurse at Baystate Medical Center. “I’m so grateful to the Elms, and to Mr. and Mrs. Riel for helping me achieve my goals,” she said.

For more than 30 years, the nursing program at Elms College has been a gateway to dynamic healthcare careers for our graduates, who are widely sought-after as nurses who assume the roles of caregiver, team member, teacher, advocate, and leader.

Endowing A Scholarship to Honor Sister Jane Morrissey: Anne Marie Corrieri ’80 Says Thank You to “This Woman of Faith” Coinciding with her 30th reunion from the Elms, Anne Marie Corrieri ’80 and her husband John W. Perrin III of Wilbraham donated $20,000 to endow a scholarship in honor of Jane Morrissey, s.s.j., former Elms faculty member. It is the second scholarship endowed by this teacher of 30 years and her retired police officer husband: the first was in memory of Sister Mary Lou McKinstrie after her death in 2007. “I had set up a scholarship in memory of Sister Mary Lou when she passed away because she was so special to me. But I felt sad knowing that since she was gone, she wouldn’t know how much I appreciated her. It made me start thinking that people should be honored while they are still alive. In that way, Sister Mary Lou guided me to do this for Sister Jane, who means the world to me, and always has.

Establishing this scholarship is my way of saying thank you, and to honor Sister Jane for being a woman of faith and showing so many of us how one can dwell in possibilities, follow your heart, and make a positive difference in the lives of others. At least six or seven people have told me how much it meant to them that Sister Jane was being honored in this way. I’m hoping it inspires them to make additional donations to this scholarship, or to start another to honor someone special.”

When I was a student at the Elms, Sister Jane started the Gray House. We walked down there from campus one day, and she said, ’Someday, this is going to be a community house.’ It was hard to believe, looking at this burned out wreck. But she made it happen. I was blown away. I recently went to see her Homework House, and it was the same feeling. You can’t believe one little lady did all this.

Andrew Melendez ’10 was a volunteer at Homework House for all four of his years at the Elms. He now works as outreach director and site supervisor there.

The Jane Morrissey Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to Elms students who volunteer service to the Gray House or Homework House, both founded by Sister Jane. This volunteer service teaches our students that they can positively impact vulnerable populations in our communities, bringing to life the charism of our founders, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, through work that unites “neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God.”

Honorary and Memorial Gifts

Many Elms benefactors choose to make gifts throughout the year in memory of loved family members and friends. Others choose to honor people meaningful in their lives such as former teachers, parents, classmates, children, friends, or family. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of those benefactors in choosing to recognize their loved ones in this way.

For many donors, the thought of providing assistance to an Elms College student is reward enough. But a gift from one anonymous donor had double impact: not only did it help our students gain valuable real-life experience; at the same time it has provided life-changing help to dozens of low-income children who have reading difficulties.

Summer Reading Program: Valuable Experience for Our Students, and Life-changing Help for Low-income Children

The donor made grants to both the Elms, to pay for teachers, and to our partner in the summer reading program, Holy Name School, to provide scholarships for needy students. According to the anonymous donor, she “is grateful to God for the chance to have an immediate and direct impact on the lives of a significant number of our young people.” The summer reading program, which just completed its 20th year, allows students in our master’s of teaching program who are seeking licensure as reading specialists to work directly with local children aged six through 15. It provides a wonderful opportunity to supplement their solid classroom learning with valuable hands-on experience, while at the same time giving invaluable help to children who really need it. “In the summer reading program, I was able to work closely with three children, diagnose and assess them, and work one-on-one with each of them to turn their reading weaknesses into strengths,” said Peg Sullivan ’10, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln School in Springfield, who completed her M.A.T. in May. “You just cannot get that experience in a regular classroom.” This is the second year the donor provided these two $20,000 grants for the summer reading program. In the summer of 2010, 60 children participated in the program, and two-thirds of them received financial aid to attend. “The children I worked with showed significant improvement in reading skills by the end of the program,” said Peg, who is now working as a reading specialist. “This will help them throughout their entire lives.” “Thanks to that anonymous donor, we have been able to give assistance to many, many children – some of whom received full scholarships,” said Beth Young, Ed.D., education professor and director of the summer reading program. “Those funds have greatly expanded our ability to offer this program to children who desperately need the help, but might not otherwise be able to afford it. We’re proud of the fact that we don’t exclude any child who needs help.” The Division of Education prepares teachers for licensure at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels, and in the areas of English as a second language and students with moderate disabilities.

Supporting Athletics: Gifts From Former Trustee Jim Sullivan and His Wife, Sally, Make a Difference to Student Athletes Tiffany Williams ’10, who was a star catcher on the softball team for all four of her years here, was one of 225 student athletes whose college careers were enhanced by their participation in intercollegiate sports at Elms College in 2009-2010. The state-of-the-art fields on which they compete were completed in 2008 as part of a $1.71 million renovation project made possible by gifts to the athletic program from many donors, including on-going support from Jim Sullivan and his wife, Sally. An avid sports fan, Jim served on the Elms College board of trustees from 1999 to 2009; and his sister, Maureen Sullivan ’60, just celebrated her 50th reunion from the Elms. The Sullivans’ support of athletics was recognized through the naming of the softball dugouts in memory of his late son: The Kevin R. Sullivan Memorial Dugouts. During the dedication in April 2010, the Sullivans were delighted to meet student athletes like Tiffany Williams, and to hear about their successes on the field and in the classroom. Ten years ago, the Sullivans’ contribution to the Direction 2000 campaign supported the building of an office in the Maguire Center, which was also dedicated in Kevin’s memory, and in memory of Jim and Maureen’s parents, Julia and Raymond Sullivan.

“Being on the softball team was a very valuable part of my Elms College experience; it taught me about sportsmanship, and service, and community,” Tiffany said. “I’m so grateful to people like the Sullivans who contributed to building the fields, which give us a competitive advantage over other teams in our conference and make it possible for us to participate.”
