E D I T O R ' S N O T E We are biological creatures—we exist to live and perish. There is no reasonable purpose to exist stagnantly. At best we are beings of reason, and by using reason we go beyond the restraints that bound us. As our humanity is purged of both daydream and consternation, we continue to seek fearlessness in the face of vulnerability, insignificance, and ambivalence.

Beyond Limits AND OUR TRANSCENDENCE Most men and women live their lives at the lowest, so monotonous, appalling, and finite that the yearning to be freed from one’s confinement, the longingness to transcend themselves if only for a few moments, is and has always been one of the principal demands of a hungry soul.

To think, every turn that we make is based on the depth of consciousness we possess at that moment and the nature of experiences we have gone through. It is not an excuse though to stay inferior, rather, it is an avenue to rise and conquer our subservient self. Taking it into the pages, beyond an extreme line, we are constantly challenged to grow on the intricacies of our life’s voyage. Perhaps, it is already written in the stars that we are fated to sail in these indomitable seas; vanquishing the terrors of the ill-natured waves that are throwing us off balance. After all, our life is a never-ending odyssey beyond our limits, for it is our destiny to reach the heavens and ascend with the stars. Transcendence is a must: so long as we are, we will rise above—it is what makes us human after all.

ABOUT THE COVER Beyond Limits. Among the mist, you'd see a stretching path that reaches out so far, beyond what you can see. How far would you be walking till you reach the end — the end of the path, that is yet to be seen? Would keep thinking, questioning yourself, why do you have to walk this path? And seemingly can't find the real meaning to this.

Even if you recalled the meaning of this odyssey, would you think that even in odds would break the means to surpass the limits. Even if it meant covering up our visions to not dream for more. To see more in a world that is not within our restrictions. A million things are gone within the stars that are left untold. To look for more, to crave for more. It is somewhere within our reach, waiting for us to transcend.

Limitless. Freedom. Transcendence.

Even if it was our calling to go beyond limits, would you rather stay or ascend with me to the stars?

a m t i e c h i t a a ns M who paved the way for Calculus Words and Layout by Lois Danielle U. Limsiaco

In the late 17th century, Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz independently devised the theory of infinitesimal calculus. By the end of the 17th century, both Leibniz and Newton claimed that the other had stolen their work, and the Leibniz–Newton calculus debate raged on until Leibniz's death in 1716.

While studying physics and geometry, Newton found calculus. In his opinion, calculus was the scientific description of the origins of motion and magnitudes. In contrast, Leibniz focused on the tangent issue and came to believe that calculus gave a philosophical account for change.

Calculus is employed in a wide variety of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, economics, pure mathematics, and all elements of engineering. It is not an exaggeration to say that Newton's insight in the development of calculus revolutionized our ability to pursue new fields of research and engineering. It is used in problems where a quantity varies with time, which is how most real-world problems behave.

"We want to benefit from the centuries of thought that has gone into all of this."

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a prototypical polymath. He made significant contributions to philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, religion, engineering, jurisprudence, law, computer technology, and geology. Leibniz allegedly noticed that he frequently needed to devote a major chunk of his week to simply writing the thoughts of a single morning.

When we first learn Calculus, we usually absorb its principles in the opposite order of their progression. We want to reap the benefits of centuries of thought that have gone into all of this. As a result, we typically begin by learning about limitations. After that, the derivative and integral proposed by Newton and Leibniz are defined. Unlike Newton and Leibniz, however, we identify them in terms of limitations. The derivative and integral are then used to answer practically all of the questions that caused Calculus' establishment.

Words and Interview by Eloisa Victoria U. Laud

It was a different radiance; it did not come from the sun. Instead, it came from the girl brimming with a wide smile on her face along with her enthusiasm to work on challenging things—Mathematical problems. She knew that she was born to do this and she wants to challenge herself to reach the greater beyonds of her own capacity. This has been the life of Ruffa Ysabelle Arsenal, a grade 11 student for University of St. La Salle, one of the prodigies who continues to shine her way in the field of Mathematics. Looking back in her earlier years, Ruffa has been a child prodigy in her own right. “I started entering Math competitions from a very young age. If I remember correctly, I first became an MTAP competitor when I was in first grade,” she recalled despite having a blurry memory of her early elementary years. Since then, she has been a major candidate in various events in her school—a young ace in the making, they say. “I don’t remember much of it since that was around a decade ago, but I do remember that I tied with my friend in second place,” she added. Despite not bagging the acclaimed spot towards the division level, she did not feel bummed out as she was convinced to forfeit her spot because she was also a contestant in another competition. At such a young age, Ruffa’s experience is an evident example that everyone starts at the beginning; and getting good at something starts with trying despite the unexpected hurdles that may come along the way. When asked about her most memorable experience in a rigorous competition, Ruffa remembers being extremely confused and nervous as her hands were cold and trembling in a prestigious feat, while answering the questions. “My mom, my adviser, and I were just there, sitting in the multi-purpose gym expecting nothing until we heard my name reverberating throughout the hall.” Despite the defiances she faced, she managed to notch the third spot in the individual category of the Regional MTAP contest when she was in sixth grade. “I heard my name but it didn’t sink into me until I received the bronze medal. The memory of me walking onto the stage, feeling the texture of the medal against my clammy hands as I smile for the picture is still vividly instilled in my mind, ” Ruffa added.

"I must say, as much as I enjoy dealing with numbers, I cannot argue with those who say Math is difficult. That is the charm of mathematics, at least it is that way for me. "

Ruffa’s streak has been undeniably commendable throughout her elementary years. However, in the peaks of her ability, her love for Mathematics proves itself to be tedious too as she would sometimes go through tough times. “I don’t remember being frustrated with Math until my late Junior High School years.” This has led Ruffa to feel burnt out with academics despite her countless attempts of studying her practice sets. She felt trapped—hopeless and inferior, as she wasn’t able to grasp the lessons. “In retrospect, the lessons weren’t that hard. It was just that way since I was forcing myself to master the lessons at a pace that is not conducive to learning for me,” she further emphasized. In spite of this predicament, her love for Mathematics continues to unfalter. Despite the pressure she faced, she remained steadfast. “Sometimes what helps me get over the breakdowns are deep thoughts with myself. Just think of your unadulterated thoughts, influenced by no one and truly your own,” she said. Ruffa also delved on the toxicity behind the grind culture and how we must not work ourselves to death when we should get enough sleep and enjoy life. “What matters the most is thinking about how you are still you, you have worth with or without your academics. After all, what matters is not the high numbers, but how you manage to get over the lows.” And often, people would comment that Mathematics is a terrible subject to learn from. “I must say, as much as I enjoy dealing with numbers, I cannot argue with those who say Math is difficult. That is the charm of mathematics, at least it is that way for me,” Ruffa would often bounce back to those who would argue that Mathematics is a difficult subject. Ruffa’s story is among the many portraits that being a prodigy is not an easy feat. Yet, it is a gentle reminder to us that despite the cynical notions that are stemmed down on Mathematics, it will always take a lot of strength to love something that is difficult. And perhaps, by loving Mathematics, we make ourselves strong enough to face what lies beyond ahead of us.

Tips on How to Overcome Your Math Woes

Is Math Your Path? Words by Abby Gayle A. Garibay & Chris Hernan D. Mijares

Being productive leads you towards success. You undergo challenges and obstacles to reach it, that's why it requires time and patience. You cannot force yourself to learn everything in just a few minutes or an hour for it will only end with frustration and sudden loss of interest. Even the evolution of mathematics took a long part in history.

It is by no doubt that students learn through pattern search and logical thinking. These skills can be used in any job and it is one of the first sciences people have worked to develop because of its importance. Basic Calculus plays an important role in every aspect of everyday life, including time tracking, car driving, cooking, accounting, finance, banking, engineering, software, and other careers. These functions require a strong mathematical background, and scientific experiments by scientists require mathematical methods.

Today's class builds up preparation for tomorrow's lessons and activities. You can not miss one because it will leave a hole of confusion for you. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek knowledge from classes and tutorials so that it will help you expand your comprehension of Basic Calculus.

Compile mathematical questions, equations, and problems. Organize the difficulty of questions from simple, basic, to hard. This exercise will help you to enhance your skills and comprehension about mathematics.

We know that mathematics is hard as we move forward into a new lesson every quarter. Every lesson that we are now encountering is getting difficult, but embracing difficulties will help us build up our skills and knowledge as time goes by. Just prioritize positivity as you overcome struggles.

If you think something is too difficult, don't be shy to ask for help. It can be a helping hand from a classmate, acquaintance, or a teacher. Explain your problem and the part where you find it difficult to solve so that they will be able to guide you and show you what you missed.

Most of us, especially STEM students, are eager to learn and understand mathematics. Yet, we struggle to understand formulas, problems, and equations. That is why setting a goal on how to learn mathematics is important. Having a goal makes you feel productive by learning math lessons, reviewing notes, and practicing solving equations.

After all, learning can be a little less hard if we continue to strive more from what we usually do. We cannot deny the fact that Basic Calculus is a tedious and burdensome subject to work with. But, nothing could ever defeat one’s burning desire to finally conquer the shackles that bound us from solving it.

# K a e Calculus will be useful in the future, even if it is not always evident. Calculus aids with analysis and it’s used to figure out how to adjust quantities and systems. Calculus is used frequently in our daily lives, and it has applications in fields such as engineering, space research, economics and many more.

# t a s h i Yes, it is necessary because calculus is essential in other fields and sciences. As I pursue engineering in the future, these lessons we had studied and learned this school year will be handy, and engineering is the field where calculus used most often. Even if it isn't always obvious, calculus is used frequently in our daily lives.

Since we are all stem students here, understanding basic calculus is really important for us students, particularly when it comes to deciding on our dream careers. Calculus is useful in nearly every situation because it teaches students not only on how to solve numerous equations and problems, but also on how to think critically and other essential skills, such as how to carefully approach tasks, paying attention to details and to think abstractly. Not to mention, Learning calculus or having the ability to analyze problems can also help open doors to lots of career opportunities . Although we may not use our skills in solving differential or integral calculus problems on a daily basis, but being able to learn basic calculus or by having any mathematical foundation, always gives us the chance to move in all kinds of directions.

future, especially with all of our chosen profession in mind?

# J o y

j o y

Yes, I think that studying basic calculus will be important in the future, particularly in our chosen field. That's because I believe that calculus is important to our studies and it implements in our daily lives because it can be found everywhere, in our tasks, hobbies, and so on. And, when it comes to our various vocations, calculus is also extremely useful to economists in predicting maximum profit in a given situation, as well as medical professionals, engineers and many more. As a result, I must conclude that learning fundamental calculus assists us students in preparing for our future careers.

# k a i Basic Calculus can benefit us not only in terms of academic or numerical. Courses like engineering, medicine, architecture, electronics, statistics and others can benefit from basic calculus, for which these courses requires calculating, formulations, and decision making. Basic Calculus also helps and equips us as a human beings, in our daily lives requires decisions we should make, so with the help of critical thinking brought to us by calculus. Example of which is for the engineers and architects to build the best quality buildings, road and bridges.

# s u g a r Basic Calculus is one of my main interests because learning new formulas and solving new equations is fun, exciting, and challenging. Nonetheless, the significance of basic calculus still depends on the type of career the student wishes to pursue. There are many situations in which calculus is not required. For example, if you are planning to attend medical school, learning basic calculus will be useless because it is not necessary. However, there are some courses that require basic calculus because they will need it one day.

HIS EXISTENCE Words by Anne Vincent S. Abante

In these homes filled with galaxies, I am in the in-between. I am living on a small planet, commonly known as stars. I have these children observing my home from below, they often call me one, and sometimes they call me two. My abode is not a steady one, and it floats away up in the space. There are times when other houses collide, but it is always a relief that my abode is safe from others' stars. One day, as I watched the children pointing at me during nighttime, I saw another uncanny celestial body floating in space. I often see astronauts and satellites floating in the cosmos, but I never see one up close. I looked at him, but surprisingly, he looked like an astronaut, but our faces looked alike. Unfortunately, he can never land on a ball of gas, except if you are also a celestial inhabitant. He stared at me as if he saw a weird asteroid with no direction. I know that we are strange-looking in the cosmos, but I'm an exception. I was called the Beauty of the Celestia, and no one could ever take that crown from me. At some point, he always stopped by my abode, trying to get my attention. But of course, I am a celestial inhabitant with manners, and I always greeted him every time he stopped by my place. One time, when he stopped by, he had a pen and a paper in his hands and signaled me to read what he had written down. "Can you meet me outside your house?" I was shocked, but if you are wondering why I know the human language because I learned it, and I understand everything it says. I formed my arms as a circle to signal that my answer was yes. But as soon as I stepped outside my abode, its light vanished. I panicked, so I stepped back inside, restoring its power. To my surprise, the astronaut was beside me, helping me because suddenly I felt a weakness in my body, but that is not the point, and why would a mere human step into my abode? Sadly, that was the last time I could see him inside my abode. He didn’t stop by my place anymore, so I started to worry. I have thought of a million reasons why he doesn't come anymore, but there is one that stands out of them all, he caught a celestial contagion, a malady when humans step foot into an abode, and their body will weaken, and soon after they will wither. I need an answer before it's too late. The lights on my abode are gone, and I am also fading, and the beauty is about to evaporate in thin air. But I was determined to find him, even if this journey could be my last. In this dark space, I wasn't the light anymore. But I saw a candle-like light in the dark, and then I saw an astronaut rushing to go toward me and hugging me. He was carrying a celestial stone, a unique stone for the people in the cosmos who is weak from leaving their abode. He gave me these heart attacks and confusion, and whenever I limit my boundaries, he is always there to break it up, but this is all wrong. A human and a cosmic individual should never know each other's existence. "For you," he said and gave me the stone. I cried because I put him into all these troubles, but these emotions are misconceptions, and we shouldn't be together. I must fix this mistake I made, I have already spoiled the balance of existence, and I must correct this in my way. When we reached my abode, I started explaining the things he would never understand. I started crying, and he tried to wipe off my tears, but he held back his hand and set his boundaries. After all that commotion, he left without saying anything. And with that ending, my quiet life in the cosmos continues. "Hi," some man had said. I was startled by another star behind me. "I guess I finally have a neighbor," I said as I smiled at the person. I can't stop thinking about why this celestial body is smiling at me as if he knows me forever. "Don't you remember me?" He said. I was shocked, of course, given that they have no similarities, especially in their appearance, but that voice — the voice that I can barely hear is the one I remembered the most. "It's you," I said while crying for joy. All kinds of indescribable emotions rushed to me as if my two worlds collided, and it wasn't inverse — it was a match. Even though his words are said implicitly, his actions are explicit. His existence, the boundaries, all had transcended. Indeed, a match made in heavens, or above all of it, or maybe a match between the cosmos. It was beyond exceptional to meet someone like me, going through the same experiences as me, and it was beyond limits.

"We have transcended the barriers of existence, and upon the match's arrival, we belong to exceed the limits of love. "

CROSS ROADS Words by Gabrielle Adriane Decendario We are finally nearing the end of the school year after what seems like an eternity. Grade 11 was a blast; repeating the year sounds great, but if given the choice, I'd rather not. The experiences, memories, people, learning, and, of course, stress. I'm glad I went through them all because they helped me grow as a person. And being a part of the STEM community made it even more fun. Being a STEM student has taught me so much and has taught me life lessons that I will undoubtedly carry with me. Such as perseverance, solution-orientedness, and open-mindedness. Since STEM is primarily a problem-solving strand, I struggled to catch up during the first few days, if not weeks, of the school year, but I persevered and tried my hardest. And as a result of my perseverance and determination, I received the blue eagle award for the entire first semester. I felt accomplished after receiving that award, and I wanted to do more, to see how far I could push myself and test my limits. But getting there wasn't easy; there were many nights when I wanted to give up because everything seemed too difficult for me. I questioned myself, compared myself, and even cried myself to sleep; I know, I'm dramatic. But stress makes people not act like themselves. During my bad days, I frequently compare myself to my peers and wonder if they are struggling as much as I am. How do they manage to get out every week? Did they complete all of the assigned activities? , as well as much more. But as I got closer to some of my classmates, I realized they were going through the same thing I was, which gave me some comfort. Knowing that I'm not stupid and that it's normal to struggle.

Aside from academic difficulties, I also experienced mental difficulties. This put me to the test in more ways than I could have imagined. This strand, the environment, and the challenges caused me a lot of stress during the transition period, but looking back, I realize that those were the moments that really shaped my work ethics and attitude toward school.

"...but looking back, I realize that those were the moments that really shaped my work ethics and attitude toward school." I am unquestionably grateful to my parents, friends, teachers, adviser, and classmates for making my grade 11 one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I'll never forget the memories I made and the lessons I learned from you. I've learned a lot this school year, especially in math. I've improved on what I knew before, however my quizzes and activities have shown me where I need to improve the most. The most common errors are the use of incorrect signs, forgetting the proper rule to use and just winging the equation, and failing to simplify the final answer. Regardless of my mistakes, I really enjoyed learning PreCalculus and Basic Calculus, and I know that if I put in more effort and focus on the areas that need improvement, I will succeed and gain a better understanding of Mathematics.

Meet the STEM F The ones who control the flanks undiscouraged… The ones who dare face the inevitable hurdles forged before them… The ones who mightily walk their paths despite the shadows that rests upon their chest…

These bravehearts are living, breathing testament whose strength, fortitude, and passion continue to ignite to reach for the stars above. Their narratives are thousand stories long with the depth of an ocean and an entire constellation woven into their souls.

There is always consternation in discovering the limitations that embrace us.

The time you cannot do something that makes you feel alive, that time you cannot bring yourself up when your soul is weary and your bones ache for rest, and that the wrong path you have taken because you lack the strength to take the right one.

Each of these limitations are theft of our lives, each of them a blow kills a part of us, leaving us exposed—a new creature, tougher yet tempered with resentment and discontent.

But once we accept our limits, we go beyond them. And it makes us human to push away the waves rolling in everyday and it makes us more brave to keep on going.

DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' By Journey

This one is a gem of a melody that reminds you why you started your journey in the first place. Sometimes people tend to lose focus halfway down on account of minor setbacks. Let this song remind your purpose and bring back the same amount of motivation. Whether it is love or life, this song proves to be relevant to anything and everything dear to you

SKYSCRAPER By Demi Lovato

Life is as you plan to take it, and if you are strong, no obstacle can stop you from achieving what you intend to. The song’s first few lines say, “Go on and try to tear me down. I will be rising from the ground”. The song teaches you to keep the fire burning within your heart and win no matter what!

NEVER GIVING UP By GhostDragon, Exede

This song implies or suggests that we should always be optimistic in life. We already know that we had to face ups and downs, as well as several problems, but this serves as motivation and a cause to be optimistic that we would succeed. No matter how bad the situation is, always believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. I believe in the phrase "try and try again until you succeed," therefore never give up on your dreams.

HALL OF FAME By The Script

The song encourages listeners to believe in the impossible and that with hard effort and commitment, they can be and do anything they want. It inspires listeners to dream big and believe in themselves in the face of adversity. This song conveys a vital lesson that is applicable to our daily life. When we are too afraid or weak to pursue our aspirations, this song serves as a reminder that if we don't attempt, we will never succeed.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAM By Sheryn Regis

Part of life to test you along the way while achieving your dreams to come true. If there is no one believe in you, you must endure it and have courage to prove that you can do it with perseverance to fight circumstances and win the battle in your mind.

FLY AWAY By TheFatRat, Anjulie

This song teaches you to maintain a positive outlook towards life. It tells you that what others opine of you is irrelevant because you are beautiful in your way.

TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT By Eagles

The line 'take it to the limit' was to keep trying. You reach a point in your life where you feel you've done everything and seen everything it's part of getting old. And just to take it to the limit one more time, like every day just keep punching away at it. That was the line, and from there the song took a different course.

PI

By Kate Bush

It is fascinating that there are people who actually spend their lives trying to formulate pi; so the idea of this number, that, in a way is possibly something that will go on to infinity and yet people are trying to pin it down and put their mark on and make it theirs in a way.

RISE

By Jonas Blue, Jack & Jack

The meaning being very clear: no matter what people say, and how much they push us down, we will win, we will get where we want. In calculus, even if all of those numbers always is understandable like in the song, "They don't speak our language," the language of the mathematicians, we will always rise than we fall.

HIGH HOPES By Panic! At The Disco

The song is about chasing after the lofty dreams you’ve set for yourself regardless of the obstacles that stand in your way and actually grabbing these dreams. The term “high hopes” in itself refers to the situation where one hopes and expects that a good thing will eventually come to pass. Always have high hopes to pass calculus!

MEME

Using humor in the class is a great idea. Which is why memes are such a fun and engaging learning technique. Memes are entertaining and easy way to get students' attention now that they've become viral on social media. Richard Dawkins coined the term "meme" to describe an idea that can be replicated. However, most people now recognize memes as a text-to-image internet format that conveys a message through silly comedy. Creating and sharing is a fun pastime for some internet users. A way to interact with people across the web through unique images that are immediately familiar. Memes are an easy-to-understand way to express emotions, ideas, and actions.

If there are limitations if life, how did you overcome those limits?

It started with the girl who asked me to her friend.

Gail.

Alone

Spent time with her most of the time. My past memories are all shared with her.

As I looked at her. I never imagined someone's attention.

I was always at my limit.

I have overcome it all. I also have a thought that I ended it.

But, Because of her,

I don't need someone to be happy.

A tragedy happened.

But that wasn't the end in fighting my limitations.

The Fear. The Limits.

But all I could hear was

So, I kept going But this time, I fought my battles

My tears are falling Just keep going, Drew I could hardly breathe as I saw her in front of me.

Just keep going, Drew Just keep going, Drew

ALONE

Lying down I fought what I thought was my limits

I learned. I realized. A lot.

I was hiding before Until she came She held my hand

Brought me along to her colorful life.

Ms. Guia, hello! Before my senior year of high school comes to a end, I'd like to express my gratitude for your wonderful lessons that have inspired us to learn more about Basic Calculus. Also, I'd want to express my gratitude for your upbeat approach in teaching us lessons. And thank you for all of your efforts over the last few months in teaching us your subject. Miss, I hope to see you in person next school year, thank you, and God bless you. - Lois Limsiaco Dear Miss Guia, First of all I want to say thank you for everything you did to us. You made Calculus easy even though I knew it was hard. It implies that you are a good teacher, or should I say "Best Teacher". I admit that I forgotten our other lessons but I somehow understand your class. Besides being the Best Teacher, you're also a fun teacher. You will always be our "MASTER". Thank you for making my Senior High School life fun, exciting, and filled with happiness. I'm hoping that you will be my/our teacher next school year and be with you i person. We love you Master, UwU! -Mitch Lecira

Words of Appreciation Thank you very much, Ms. Guia. We are grateful for all of your sacrifices and support. You made the most difficult and challenging topics appear simple and easy to understand. You have had a significant impact on our lives, and for that we are eternally grateful to you. We hope to see you again in the coming years. And again, thank you. - Gabriella Decendario Dear Master Guia, As a new student who is exposed to a new environment and individuals, I felt welcomed by your approach. At first, you give off a strict aura since most of the teachers that handles mathematics are somehow stern. Mathematics, as subject, is challenging for most students but you made it easier for us to fathom. Even though there are times that the topics are confusing, you never fail to explain it in order for us to apprehend them fully. Also, I am glad that you are one of the teachers whom I got to meet (virtually) during my first year in CSA-B. Moreover, I always looked forward to our classes even though the materials are complicated and complex. In closing this appreciation message, I hope that you will still be one of our subject teachers as we approach our grade 12 journey. Stay safe and healthy, Master! See you soon and S4lAm@t pH03 uL1t 5a LeArn1inGzxs & sW3rtE n@mhEn 5Au ksE 3kAw n4Gin6 gUr0 n4m1n s@ pR3-cAl at b3ys1C c@lcuLu5 (pro daw indi gid ya basic ms hahaha),,,, Sincerely yours, Khloe Beck G. The best things you have taught us were not in the curriculum, but in the example you have set. Your confidence, determination and excellence are all qualities that we someday hope to have. Thank you and we're hoping to see you in personal, Miss!

Hi ms. Guia! Thank you for this great experience with you and with this subject. Even though we are only meeting online, I have learned a lot in your subject. I like how you always remind us to be responsible and just relax at the same time. I appreciate how you always cheer us up and for being funny, it was really a big help for us especially this subject is pretty hard. I can say that I haven't experienced a hard time with this subject because of you. -Patria Jongco
