A City of One’s Own

Gendered, Commoning Spaces of Care and Repair in Istanbul

Project Synopsis

In Istanbul, informal or gecekondu settlements (self-built squatter houses built on urban land by rural migrants) have been targeted by governmental urban transformation. This is largely because of their de facto ownership, resulting in mass demolition of gecekondus and displacement of residents, formalisation of ownership and commodification of land. It has widely been acknowledged that Urban Transformation Projects (UTPs) reproduce social inequalities by ignoring socio-spatial needs, reinforcing economic instabilities and devaluing property ownership defined by use rather than legal relation. This project accordingly examines gendered experiences of UTPs through spatial and property analysis in Başıbüyük, a gecekondu settlement in Istanbul which has undergone urban transformation, in relation to women’s commoning practices of care and repair. The proposal develops a strategy for the community to capitalise on self-built space and collective ownership in order to empower women in particular. For example, a co-housing cooperative with communal facilities, emphasise shared caring relations, as to mitigate women’s individual responsibility for social reproduction. Furthermore, the workshop allows for incremental, autoconstructed space and encourages the creation of the commons through repair. It also provides training on self-built Turkish hımış construction with compressed earth bricks, as an earthquake resilient technique. Alternative property models have a role in design that overcomes certain gender inequalities and creates an environment which has a much-needed degree of legal and physical stability.

The project aims to provide services to promote equality for women in business. As well as being designed to represent feminist values and ideals, I based this concept on Jane Rendell’s definition of Feminist Architecture, being it must demonstrate ‘Collectivity’, ‘Alterity’ and ‘Materiality’.

For example, the project aims to use timber to represent the values ‘Collectivity’, ‘Alterity’ and ‘Materiality’ through the warm, inclusive atmosphere it gives. The offset floor plates represent collectivity by increasing visual connections between the different spaces. The are also other spaces that focus on inclusiveness such as the crèche and more private, personal office spaces.

1-5 Grosvenor’s Place

1-5 Grosvenor’s Place (GP 1-5) will be a brand-new, luxury 5* hotel as a part of The Peninsula Hotel group. Originating in Hong Kong, and spreading globally, the new London Peninsula will evoke design aspects of the original, traditional and grand hotel. It will replace an existing 1960s office block on Hyde Park Corner and have views towards Buckingham Palace, Apsley House and Wellington Arch which its design alludes to, whilst also alluding to the Italian Renaissance Palazzo.

I had a central role in the hotel ballroom team, where we produced multiple Stage D-developed design, Stage E technical design, and Stage F construction design tender documents. I had to produce multiple types of drawings for the different stage releases, including general arrangement drawings for Stage D, technical details for Stage E and construction drawings for the Stage F: Phase 1 Scoping and Phase 2 White Box submissions. . I was also leading the BIM modelling for the Hotel Ballroom package.

The design is based on the Modulor- an anthropometric scale of proportion in response to the Charring Timber is an ancient Japanese method for wood preservation known as Yakisugi/ Shou Sugi Ban. It utilises off cuts of timber which enables our kennel to be more sustainable due to being made from all recycled materials. Cedar Off Cuts We are hoping to use cedar off cuts from lo cal timber merchants to see how the colours of cedar are affected by charring. Cedar is also resistant to warp ing and cracking which will help the resilience of the kennel. Construction If we source timber off cuts then the price of the kennel will most definitely be under £250 because we will only need to buy nails, charcoal and two dog Concept Grate threshold: -Creates a welcoming outdoor to indoor transition for the dog -Can sit in the kennel and still feel outside -Not a scary dark entry point Ladder: Makes the kennel a fun climbing toy for dogs Indoor bed Sprung mattress to be used with-in. Outdoor bed For fresh air, space, environmental comfort and closeness to other dogs or humans. Process of Charring Timber Interior -Enough space for a medium- large dog to turn around for dog’s comfort Exterior -Constructed from timber offcuts (see below) Shutter/Window -Allows dog inside to have pets from humans so not to feel lonely -More natural light for dogs happiness and wellbeing. A proposed redevelopment of an abandoned site within the Green Belt through 14 high quality homes.

worked with the project architect to design a series of af fordable and market semi and detached houses for a planning application. It was a tricky site due to being within the metro politan Green Belt and an area of great landscape value. The site is located on the Church Lane Nursery, within the village of Headley, Surrey. We designed the buildings to accomodate the site and help revitalise the abandonded nursery. As well as the design, my responsibilities also included producing the drawings, SketchUp model, visuals and Design and Access Statement for the planning application.
