ELON UNIVERSITY
Arts & Sciences
Every year, the faculty in the Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences accomplishes great things. From implementing new technologies in the classroom to engaging in creative work, to sharing their expertise with media outlets and presenting at local and national conferences, they give the College of Arts and Sciences many reasons to celebrate. Working closely with faculty, students engage in outstanding work and scholarship — from presenting alongside their mentors at local and national conferences, to conducting research abroad and being successful members of their communities. The following pages contain some of the accomplishments faculty and students in the Arts & Sciences have achieved during the past year.
ELON UNIVERSITY
Art & Art History Diverse Curricula Elon’s innovative Art History program has earned a national reputation for its focus on a three-part thematic foundation series that introduces students to visual culture from pre-history to the present, as well as the history of Art History. This broad foundation is developed through rigorous upper-level courses that encourage student research projects and standards for professional research presentations.
Studio art students get hands-on experience
Two degrees in studio art offer different experience for Art students. The B.A. in Art features studio instruction across media or focused in an area of concentration. A studio-intensive B.F.A. in Art offers a focused program of study with an emphasis on studio practice and contemporary art designed for students who want to pursue advanced studies in art. The newly introduced minor in digital art will provide a media-focused course of creative study to complement several majors at Elon.
Engaged Faculty Art & Art History faculty are active scholars. Recently Art History faculty have: published a book on Gender and American Impressionism;
Art history students travel to Tivoli, Italy
penned peer-reviewed articles on Eleventh-century Art in Northern Italy, the patronage of medieval bishops at the Eufrasian Basilica in Croatia; given papers and organized sessions at national and international conferences on manga, anime and contemporary Japanese art, bronze-age architecture in Turkey, and the reception of images of the medieval bishop. Art Faculty have: participated in national exhibitions in ceramics, installation art, painting, photography, digital art and new media; participated in Art Prize, a dynamic and democratic public art project in Michigan; presented at national conferences on
collaborative work in art & poetry, art practice, theory and pedagogy.
Amazing Opportunities Last year, 100% of the graduating Art History majors participated in shortterm study abroad or semester abroad programs. Also, more than half of the Art and Art History faculty have led a short-term or semester-abroad program. All Art & Art History students participate in public presentations or exhibitions of their research and/or artwork. Art and Art History students regularly present at national exhibitions and in national academic conferences. The department sponsors an Exhibition Series that includes visiting artists, juried shows and student exhibitions, and an Art History Speaker Series that brings engaging scholars with international reputations to our campus.
Mentoring Art & Art History faculty and students regularly participate in Elon’s undergraduate research initiatives. In 2011, an Art History major was selected for the prestigious Lumen Prize.
Well Prepared for Further Academic Challenges Art & Art History students are accepted to the top programs in their fields of study. In the last year students have been accepted to, or are concluding degrees from, American University, University of Colorado, The Corcoran College of Art & Design, Drexel University, The Florida State University, Sotheby’s Institute of Art and SUNY-Stonybrook. 100% of our Art History students have been accepted to at least one program, and often the top program, to which they have applied. What’s Oew in Professional Writing Studies (PWS)? What are PWS Hraduates Taying about the Ninor? “My PWS minor has already placed me ahead of many of my classmates because I have been put in so many situa ons where I had to label my audience, understand what they were looking for and then finally express that to them in a format that they would best receive it in. The minor not only helped me write be er, but also gave me the tools to improve even more once I graduated.” Tommy Brown ͛11 L͛14 “The PWS minor was a great addi on to my Communica ons coursework because it dealt a lot with thinking about your audience not only from a rhetorical standpoint but also from a visual point of view. The internship requirement also pushed me to think about what areas of Communica ons or Professional Wri ng that I hadn't yet received hands‐on experience with but that I should explore. “Tiana Tucker ’11 “My supervisor as well as my colleagues know that I have a background in business, but my minor in PWS lets them know that I can write, and I can write well. Whatever job I have in the future, I will need to have strong communica on skills.
