The four-year Elon Core Curriculum is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, and focuses on inquiry, knowledge and communication. You’ll learn to see the world through many different perspectives and understand the complex relationships among people, cultures, beliefs and environments. An Elon education emphasizes experiential learning through the university’s signature program,
The Elon Experiences. Each of the five experiences connects your education to the real world by putting knowledge into action on campus, in the community and around the world.
Study Abroad :: Research :: Service :: Internships :: Leadership Elon supports learning wherever it occurs and provides opportunities for you to become a lifelong learner. By the time you graduate, you’ll have a wealth of real world experiences that will support your transition to life after college and ensure that you stand out when applying for your first job or graduate school.

Alison Deatsch ’13 worked with Dr. Ben Evans, associate professor of physics and A. L. Hook Professor in Science and Mathematics, throughout her four years at Elon. She presented her research at international biophysics conferences, published multiple articles in academic journals and is now a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Notre Dame. Alison credits Evans not just with academic guidance, but with helping her learn the value of collaboration. “He taught me the power of a good network and I hope that I can turn around and pass that on to others in the future,” she says.

Colby Halligan ’15 Majors: Environmental Studies and Public Health Studies Colby wanted to study abroad. It’s the reason she came to Elon. But after her first Winter Term course in Vietnam, she was hooked in a way she didn’t expect. “I was immersed in Vietnamese culture, and after I left, kept thinking about how to take the values I learned and incorporate them into my own life,” she says. Colby’s love for travel is matched with her passion for the environment and creating sustainable food systems. Subsequent travels have taken her to Kenya, Tanzania and Italy. As her passport accumulates stamps, she’s become resolute in her advocacy for nutritious food that reflects local traditions. It’s not about telling people what to grow, it’s about listening to their needs and partnering to make improvements. Colby spent last summer interning in Europe as one of the youngest students selected for an organic
farming program that also provides foreign language instruction. Closer to home, she volunteers at Elon’s Loy Farm and has interned with a group that supplies Third World communities with sustainable agricultural systems. “Good food is the foundation for so much of our well-being — our health, relationships, cultural exchange,” she says. “You learn so much about people when you take the time to share a meal.”
“My time abroad clarified the core values that define me,” Colby says. “I’ve learned so much not just about who I want to be, but how I can be an advocate for others.”

Omolayo Ojo ’15 Major: International Studies Omolayo moved to the United States from Nigeria when she was a child, but her interest in West Africa guides her academic journey. As a recipient of the Lumen Prize, Elon’s top undergraduate research award, she is focused on West Africa and its diaspora communities. Omolayo traveled to Ghana with her Winter Term class, then returned to Africa to immerse herself in the language and culture of Senegal. Omolayo spent part of the preceding summer in the African Language Initiative at the University of Florida studying the Wolof language, which is spoken in Senegal. At Elon, Omolayo is a member of the Periclean Scholars Class of 2015. Students apply for the program during their first year, and if selected, work together on a multi-year project of global social change. Omolayo’s class is dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against human trafficking.

“She’s doing many of the things a master’s or Ph.D. student would be doing for research—learning the local languages, immersing herself in the local culture, making personal connections with the major scholars in the field—but she’s doing it as an undergraduate,” says Tom Mould, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, and Omolayo’s faculty mentor.
Elon supports a variety of initiatives that fully engage students in work that supports the public good.

What really matters is that an Elon education is affordable for you.
The Elon approach to affordability For decades our first financial aid policy has been to keep the cost reasonable – often as much as $10,000 below other private colleges and universities our applicants consider. That makes a big difference in how much you will invest. Our goal is to help you understand all the financial resources that make an Elon education affordable for you.
Fellows Scholarships
Top student – top recognition: that’s the philosophy of the $6,000 Presidential Scholarship award. You have made academics a priority, and we want to recognize your commitment and hard work by investing in your potential to be a top student at Elon. Presidential Scholarships are awarded to the top 15 percent of the incoming first-year class and are based on the high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores.
Distinguish yourself as an Elon University Fellow. These premier academic and leadership programs are based on your academic interests and talent and require a separate application. Performing Arts Elon’s programs in the performing arts bring New York agents directly to our stage. Scholarships are awarded by the individual departments based on a separate performing arts application and an audition. Award amounts vary. So, if this is your forte, contact the Department of Performing Arts for complete information or visit elon.edu/auditions.
ROTC The U.S. Army and Air Force offer three- and four-year scholarships based on merit, not financial need. In addition, Elon provides all ROTC scholarship recipients with a room and board scholarship during the time the ROTC scholarship pays tuition. For more information, contact your high school guidance counselor or local recruiter directly.
Exceptional need-based scholarship programs The Watson and Odyssey Scholars Program Academically talented students with significant documented financial need are eligible for scholarships in the Watson and Odyssey Scholars Program. The program was created for students poised to take advantage of an Elon education but for whom this possibility might not be an option due to financial reasons. The four-year program empowers students through peer and administrative support so they can excel and have an impact at Elon and in the broader community. A total of 25 awards are available through the program ranging from $5,000 to $22,500. All students also receive a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to be used for an approved study abroad or Study USA program. The Watson and Odyssey Scholars Program Application is required and must be submitted by Jan. 10. Do not wait to be admitted before submitting the Watson and Odyssey Scholars Program Application. Complete the required financial aid forms as soon after Jan. 1 as possible, but make sure you have submitted the Watson and Odyssey Scholars Program Application by Jan. 10 even if your financial aid forms have not been submitted. Complete information about all required financial aid forms is listed on the next page.
Additional need-based assistance For students who qualify for need-based assistance, Elon offers a full range of federal, state and institutional grants, loans and scholarships. The amount of federal and state aid you may receive will be determined from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Institutional financial aid eligibility is based upon additional information collected on the CSS PROFILE. We recommend starting early so that your aid file is submitted and complete by mid-March. That way you will receive notification of your aid eligibility well before the national reply date of May 1.
Non-need-based loans There are financial resources for students and families who do not qualify for need-based assistance. Elon participates in several loan programs. Check with the Office of Financial Planning to get the most up-to-date information or look online at elon.edu/finaid.
Payment plan You don’t have to pay for college in two large payments – fall and spring semesters. Elon offers a 10-month payment plan. Charges for the academic year may be met in monthly payments beginning in June. Check with the Office of the Bursar for the most up-to-date information or visit elon.edu/bursar.
