Brett “Coop” Cooper ’05
Senior Campaign & Elections Specialist for the National Education Association Brett has been politically active since his days as an Elon student. A political science major, he spent two summers interning in the N.C. House of Representatives. The Leadership Fellows alumnus also worked with Harvard University to create the National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C., to work as a field organizer for the Foundation for Virginia and a staff assistant for the National Committee for an Effective Congress. After working for several political campaigns in New Hampshire, Colorado and Washington, Brett’s work at the National Education Association focuses on advancing the cause of public education.
Austin Rhoads ’14
Co-founder of Lynkforce and Venture for America participant When Austin came to Elon he imagined he would graduate and pursue a career with a Fortune 500 company. He’d work hard and climb his way up the corporate ladder. Things worked out a little differently. And the Business Fellows alumnus says that’s for the best. Five years later, Austin has started his own company, Lynkforce, and developed a passion for entrepreneurship. He studied abroad in Mexico, India and Dubai, and spent nearly a year in Spain, where he researched entrepreneurial ecosystems of southern Europe. He also learned the value of calculated risk-taking, which inspired him to forge his own professional path. Lynkforce matches the social media requests of small North Carolina businesses with college students who provide online marketing and public relations functions. The concept helped Austin successfully apply to Venture for America, a national program inspired by Teach for America that infuses transitioning cities with energetic young college graduates determined to make a name for themselves as entrepreneurs.

Katherine Wise ’13
Multimedia Coordinator for the Council on Foreign Relations Katherine used her time at Elon to construct an experience that mirrored her life goals. As a journalism and international studies double major, the Communications Fellows alumna approaches media from a humanitarian perspective in order to break down cultural barriers. She studied abroad in South Africa and Senegal, engaging in service learning on both occasions, and was active in Elon’s student newscast, newspaper and documentary film organization so she could pull from multiple skillsets as a graduate. In addition to her work at the Council on Foreign Relations, Katherine actively pursues ongoing educational opportunities, most recently at a humanitarian photojournalism workshop in Haiti.
Kelsey Van Dalfsen ’13
Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley
Kelsey is a Goldwater Scholar and conducts research on high glucose levels and increased heart cell death in diabetics. “At Elon, I was in a research role that allowed me to be a decision maker – that doesn’t happen for most students until graduate school. Being an Elon College Fellow not only gave me financial support, it allowed me to develop relationships with mentors across several departments. That helped me direct my focus in a way that wouldn’t otherwise have happened.”

Fellows Programs Apply for admission to Elon Complete and submit an Elon University First-Year Admission application, along with the U.S. $50 application fee, official high school transcript(s), official SAT or ACT (with Writing) scores and the completed Secondary School Report Form no later than the following dates: EARLY DECISION/GAP SEMESTER EARLY DECISION: November 1 EARLY ACTION: November 10 REGULAR DEADLINE/GAP SEMESTER REGULAR DEADLINE: January 10 You can apply online at elon.edu/apply. Note: Students who apply for and are accepted to a Fellows Program and the Gap Semester Program must choose to participate in only one program. Each program has a specific schedule and curriculum that precludes participation in both.
Complete and submit a Fellows application no later than Jan. 10 The Fellows application is available online at elon.edu/apply. The Fellows application must be submitted online or postmarked no later than Jan. 10. An application for any Fellows Program must include: ›› Fellows application with all information completed on the form ›› Essays responding to the question for each Fellows Program to which you are applying Engineering Scholarships: A separate application is necessary. The Engineering application is available at elon.edu/apply. The application must be submitted online or postmarked no later than Jan. 10.
For which program should I apply? Fellows Programs are primarily school-based, so you should be planning to major in a field within the school sponsoring the Fellows Program. The exceptions are Honors Fellows and Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows, which are for students in any major except engineering. Students who are undecided about a major typically apply to Honors Fellows if they wish to pursue the thesis option or to Elon College Fellows due to the breadth of majors offered in the arts and sciences. It is important to note that students who plan to major in engineering have a very specific three-year curriculum, which precludes participation in any of the Fellows Programs. Engineering candidates should apply for the scholarships associated only with that major.
For how many programs may I apply? Students may apply for one school-based (Business, Elon College, Communications, or Teaching Fellows) and one non-school-based (Honors or Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows) program. However, you may participate in only one Fellows Program. You may not apply to two school-based programs. Because the Honors and Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows Programs are not schoolbased, you may apply to both of these or to one of them in combination with a school-based program. If you apply to two programs, be sure to indicate your first and second choice. Candidates selected to compete for Honors and Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows will be required to have a recommendation submitted on their behalf prior to the competition weekend. Further information regarding the format of these recommendations is provided on the application.
What happens after I apply? All Fellows applications are reviewed after Jan. 10. Finalists for each program are selected by faculty committees. If you are a finalist, you will be invited one month in advance to attend Fellows & Scholarship Weekend, March 4–5, 2016. If you applied under the regular deadline decision period, you will receive a decision about your first-year admission status at the time of invitation to Fellows & Scholarship Weekend. The Fellows competition includes attending a seminar and writing a response, an interview with faculty and information sessions about the Fellows Programs. From this competition, Fellows are selected and notified by April 1.
Mark your calendar! Fellows & Scholarship Weekend Friday–Saturday, March 4–5, 2016 If you are invited to Fellows & Scholarship Weekend, you do not need to attend Rising Phoenix Weekend, Elon’s spring orientation. Please wait until you receive notification about your Fellows application to make reservations for an orientation program. Fellows & Scholarship Weekend includes many of the same activities as Rising Phoenix Weekend, such as campus and residence hall tours. Also, you will want to find out if you have been selected as a Fellow before you choose your first-year courses. Of course, you may attend both Fellows and Rising Phoenix weekends if that is your preference.
