ENGINEERING SCHOLARS

Elon offers an innovative approach to engineering. FOUR-YEAR DEGREE B.S. IN ENGINEERING B.S IN ENGINEERING – BIOMEDICAL CONCENTRATION B.S. IN ENGINEERING – COMPUTING CONCENTRATION Explore a range of engineering topics: • Mechanics • Materials and circuits • Robotics • Bioinstrumentation • Fluid flow • Energy transformations Combined with foundational courses in the arts & sciences, Elon’s program offers the flexibility to add another major or minor to your engineering major, preparing you with the essential skills needed in today’s workplace. Elon’s program offers many advantages: • Access to state-of-the-art electronic equipment, a robotics lab and an engineering workshop • Experienced engineering faculty who lead small classes • Design coursework offered throughout the curriculum • Faculty-mentored undergraduate research experience • Exposure to a variety of engineering fields • Numerous internship opportunities • Study abroad experiences around the globe • An annual, team-based engineering design experience

Engineers need more than technical skills to solve complex problems. That is why a broad education with a strong foundation in the arts and sciences is so important. Employers are extremly interested in engineers who have strong technical and communication skills. Articulate engineers are be er prepared to tackle challenges with viable solutions.” – Gabie Smith, Dean of Elon College, the College of Arts & Sciences

Twenty high-achieving Engineering majors will be selected as Engineering Scholars annually. Each Engineering Scholar receives a $5,500 scholarship, renewable annually based on a separate application, academic performance and program participation. In addition, each student receives a one-time $1,000 global study grant for a university-approved study abroad or Study USA experience. elon.edu/engineeringscholars Engineering scholars are challenged to design, prototype and test potential solutions to the complex problems facing our world today. Starting in their first-year, scholars collaborate with peers and faculty mentors to take on “Grand Challenges” developed by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and develop skills and competencies in: • Hands-on, mentored experiences designed to address the Grand Challenges • Engineering solutions that serve the needs of others • Designing and implementing culturally-sensitive solutions • Developing multidisciplinary engineering solutions • Creating business and entrepreneurship experiences through experiential opportunities

Facilities McMICHAEL SCIENCE CENTER Elon’s engineering students have the advantage of first-rate computer and electronics labs in the Dalton L. McMichael Sr. Science Center, which houses Elon’s expanding science programs and supports significant undergraduate research. HAMPL ENGINEERING WORKSHOP The newly renovated Hampl Engineering Workshop is the home of first-year engineering students’ Grand Challenges project work. Students build prototypes and test basic engineering theories. The workshop contains basic tools for metal and wood works, such as hand drills, hacksaws and soldering equipment. ROBOTICS LABORATORY A new robotics laboratory provides engineering and computer science students with challenging and engaging opportunities to explore robotics design from start to finish. The lab houses advanced workstations that include the equipment and programs for design and construction as well as a robotics testing field. TWO MAKER HUBS Build and program a robot arm. Learn about circuits firsthand. Two maker hubs provide students space to create, explore, innovate and discover using a variety of tools, 3D printers, materials and knowledge.

DUAL-DEGREE PROGRAM Elon also offers a dual-degree engineering program. Earn a degree from Elon and one from another engineering university. Students typically complete both degrees within five years, earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an affiliated engineering school and a bachelor’s degree in one of six Elon science majors. Engineering majors attend Elon for three years to focus on a concentration chosen from the following: • Engineering Physics • Computer Science/Engineering • Chemistry/Chemical Engineering • Engineering Mathematics • Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering • Biophysics/Biomedical Engineering Students then transfer to an affiliated school in the engineering discipline of their choice. Currently, Elon has affiliations with the following schools: North Carolina State University Georgia Tech Penn State Virginia Tech University of Notre Dame Washington University in St. Louis North Carolina A&T State University University of South Carolina Clemson University

Elon is exceptional in its ability to focus on the student to develop a well-rounded individual. The atmosphere encourages exploration of diverse interests. I was able to work on a number of research projects on campus, which helped spark my passion for electronics and circuits.” – Jake Smith ’18, an Elon dual-degree student completing his electrical engineering degree at Georgia Tech
