Adventures In Leadership Adventures in Leadership is an outdoor experience of camping, hiking, climbing, rappelling, and white-water rafting. The program aids in the development of leadership skills, understanding of community, and ability to work in teams. Past participants say the most valuable outcome is the lasting friendships they built from the program. The experience begins with group initiatives at the Elon Challenge ropes course and travels to the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia where the rest of the adventure takes place.

Pre-SERVE

(Students may only attend one FSE trip)

Pre-SERVE is offered by the Kernodle Center for Service Learning. Participants learn about important social issues and how service can be used as a tool for personal growth and community building. While spending a week living on-campus, students volunteer within the Burlington community, familiarize themselves with the Elon campus, and become acquainted with students, faculty, and staff they will see again in the fall. A significant portion of the service will be home construction with Habitat for Humanity; other service projects have included work at a day camp, food pantry, and assisted-living center.

Quest

Discovery is a week-long adventure in the outdoors that will enable participants to discover new friendships while building teamwork and leadership skills through service and fun. Designed for students with little to nocamping experience, Discovery is also for expert campers. The program begins by familiarizing you with campus and then moves to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where new friendships begin and outdoor skills are developed. You will hike the Appalachian Trail, spend two days serving the community of Luray, VA, canoe the whitewater of the Shenandoah River and tour local attractions.

Quest is designed for interfaith understanding and exploration. The group will travel to Atlanta, GA, and visit places of worship from several major world religions, spending time with leaders of those traditions, learning of their history, practices, and beliefs. Where appropriate, students will participate in worship as well as community service opportunities alongside members of the various faith communities encountered. Participants will meet on Elon’s campus for a day and night of orientation and community building before heading to Atlanta. By the end of the experience, participants will have a better understanding of not only the world’s major religious traditions, but also the people and cultures to which they belong. Quest is offered by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.
